3. Key Points ofThe Cognitive Theory Branches from psychological idea of thinking, deciding, remembering, etc. Uses behavior analysis to measure effect on learning, cognitivists believe thinking and recollecting is behavior. Thinking plays a role. Unlike Behaviorism, this theory focuses on humans needing to process information and participate in order to learn. Compares people to computers, absorb information and process that information, then results in some sort of outcome.
4. What Teachers Do UnderThe Cognitive Theory Get the attention of students Inform students of the material Stimulate the recollection of what was taught Present (teach) the lesson Provide guidance and instruction (technology could be incorporated) Give feedback Assess performance through grading
5. What Students Do UnderThe Cognitive Theory Knowledge- Recall, Define, List Comprehension- Explain, Summarize Application- Apply, Demonstrate, Discover (perhaps using computers) Analysis- Analyze, Experiment, Conclude Synthesis- Collect, Design, Create Evaluation- Compare, Contrast, Predict
6. The Cognitive Theoryand My Own Teaching Students must participate to gain knowledge Important to stimulate and recall what was taught Incorporate technology to present lessons, helps with comprehension for students Provide feedback for benefit of the students
