Media Studies - How Cover Design and Layout Attracted Audience
1. Media Studies - Evaluation
Question 5 – How did you attract
your audience?
2. Front cover
I have attracted the target audience in my front cover since my main image is
giving direct emotive address – this attracts the reader since they are giving
direct eye contact which may catch the audience attention to the magazine.
The positioning/alignment of my image is unique so it may attract my
audience since it is different. I have tilted the image slightly to the right to
give a dynamic and unusual look to the audience. This may interest the
audience since other magazines usually have the main image as it is.
The colour scheme of the image is quite dark – black and red. Which the
audience will associate with rock – I had ask a question in my questionnaire
about what colour people like, I didn’t use the results since the most voted
colour wasn’t stereotypically associated with rock compared to the colours
used in the front cover.
The front cover main image attracts audience since the clothes he are
wearing relate to the rock genre. So if the audience is a fan of the rock genre
they can easily identify that this a rock magazine – therefore bringing
interest to the audience who would want to know more about it. The clothes
can also relate to the audience clothes that they might wear as well – since
the audience may relate to what the artist in the image is wearing.
The main image can also attract the audience with the guitar the artist is
holding in the image. Since the guitar – relates to rock. The audience who
may like rock will gain interest since they may be trying to look at rock
magazines.
3. Front cover
The cover lines may attract the audience since most of my cover lines are
rock bands – this will attract the rock audience since they will know of
these rock bands. My cover lines on the front cover has linked into the
main images colour scheme since it has used the red for the colour of the
text. This may attract audiences since red is a bright colour which stands
out from the black background image. The cover lines are all in capitals to
make it stand out more than the sub lines underneath. So the cover line
will capture the audience attention to what is inside the magazine. Whilst
the sub line gives more information, that could potentially make them
look furthermore what contents the magazine holds.
The main cover line is the biggest with the artist name given a after effect
to attract the audience more to the main article. This attracts the audience
more than just having a normal sized cover line, which won’t stand out to
the audience. ‘Artist of the month’ gives a unique cover line and tells the
audience what artist was the best for that month – which will make them
curious to why they were awarded that.
The positioning of the cover lines are at the sides of the page so it doesn’t
cover the main image. This may attract the audience since some of the
audience may like to read the cover lines whilst another part of the
audience prefer looking at the image.
4. Front cover
The skyline positioned right at the top of the front cover will attract the
audience, if they may not be interested in the cover lines mentioned below.
The skyline gives extra information to what is inside the magazine. The
audience may find another rock band/artist they might be interested in
looking at rather than the other cover lines on the front cover.
The front cover may also attract my target audience since the colour scheme
can easily be identified - which also makes the cover lines and sublines easier
to read. It will attract my audience since it the colour red stands out from the
dark lit background of the image.
The language I have used for my cover lines and sublines could have been
addressed a little bit more informal to attract/interest my target audience
more. However I do think my cover lines will attract my target audience if
they do like the rock genre.
My front cover also attracts my target audience since it has some
connotations and iconography of the rock genre. My main image shows a
artist holding a electric guitar, usually pictured in the rock genre magazines.
Also the dark costume and background can symbolise the some rock songs
that are dark and sad.
5. Contents page My contents page was another way to attract the target audience
furthermore since they are now interested in the magazine. The
contents page gives more information about the contents of
each article in the magazine.
One of the ways it attracts the audience is the four images at the
right hand side. These attract my target audience since the
images show what it is about without giving too much. For
example the top right image shows a person playing the guitar -
say if the reader is a keen guitarist or is interested they will look
at the page number to read more about it.
Another way the contents page can attract my audience is the
clear layout of this page. It makes it very easy to read one
section. So my audience isn’t overwhelmed by all the
information since it is easily set out. I know it will attract the
audience since in my questionnaire my target audience replied
that they rather see magazines with three columns.
The titles of ‘featured’ and ‘regulars’ categories the magazine for
the audience who are attracted to one thing in the magazine.
They can specifically identify it and know the page number
straight away. Instead of having to read through each individual
article.
6. I have attracted the audience by having interesting cover
lines for the audience to read. This is shown in my evaluation
shown in the image.
The contents page has attracted to the cover lines e.g. How
to… is one of the cover lines for an article that shows the
audience how to do something that is music orientated – so it
interacts with the reader. Not just for the reader to consume
the information.
The cover lines also attract the reader since the coverlines
and sublines are straight to the point. So my target audience
of younger ages will not be put off by either too much text or
get bored of the magazine.
Contents page
7. In my DPS I have attracted the audience by first having a balanced text to image ratio in my DPS so it
looks aesthetically pleasing for the reader/audience which interest them. Having a balanced ratio
will not scare the audience since they may feel overhauled by too much text on each page. So using
three pages makes the DPS easier to read. I have also made it feel less of a overhaul for the
audience by creating short paragraphs and using pull quotes on both pages of text.
Double Page Spread
8. Double Page Spread
I have also attracted the audience by using some slang
in the text to keep the text informal making it easier
for the audience to read. However I haven’t really
engaged the audience with direct address with words
like ‘you’ which would have made it better. Although I
know I have interested the audience since my
questionnaire results show this.
Another way I have attracted the audience is the layout
of all three pages of the DPS. The first two pages of my
DPS is a simple and similar to professional magazines
with one side of text and another for the image.
However the third page is slightly different which may
intrigue the reader/audience to read on. This is shown
in my questionnaire I have done. Most if not all have
liked the layout in my answers.
My images in the DPS will also attract people since
they are different and will interest the reader if they
are skimming through each page of the magazine,
since I have used a whole page for one of the image of
the band. Most if not all the pictures in my DPS are
giving direct address to the audience which may
trigger their curiosity and learn/read more about the
band.
