2. The masthead, on a double page spread is
usually positioned at the top of the page – it
can sometimes be on one side of the page or
be in the middle of the two pages
The font is unique for the masthead so the
reader knows what the double page spread is
To make the masthead stand out from the
main image and all the text the masthead
might have colour behind the text to make it
stand out more – which can also create a
colour scheme for the double page e.g. the
radar magazine has a blue colour scheme
MASTHEAD
The masthead is usually includes the title of
the band, so the double page spread stands out
to readers if they recognise the band name
Depending on the magazine they sometimes
play with the bands/artist name like the
magazine in the next page
3. IMAGES
Images in a double page spread are usually have one main
image that might take up one or more page to make it
stand out to the reader. The magazine on the right has also
made the image of the artist a poster that can be cut out,
that may appeal to readers
The images may not always have direct address since they
may contain a action shot of the artist/band
The sub images are usually smaller and next to the
text/information that might relate to one of the things the
artist/band has said
Some images usually have a some sort of text around or
on top of the image – so the reader will know what page
that image relates to
4. The background of a double page spread can be used
to know what genre of music it is from e.g. the
Kerrang magazine shows/indicates that it is rock
since the background has a dark background like the
music
The backgrounds of magazines are usually very
simplistic like the one above – so the text and
masthead is the main focus of the double page
spread
BACKGROUND
5. Pull quotes are used to tell readers what the
artist/band has said in a interview. Pull quotes
are usually located near the text/information –
it can sometimes me on the image as well
Some quotes may express there thoughts or
feelings in the interview. This make readers
want to read the reason why they have said
that
To make the pull quote stand out from the
rest of the text the font and size of the quote
is usually bigger and larger than the rest of the
text. If the double page spread has a colour
scheme it will also fit it as well
QUOTES
Pull quotes aren’t always used but can be
effective sometimes to convince or make
readers curious of wanting to know more about
the person being interviewed
6. Music magazines can usually be identified
since the mise-en-scene can tell the reader
what genre that magazine is. It can be
applied to other types of media e.g. Film
The magazine on the left you can easily tell
that it is a music magazine since the artist is
in a music store looking at albums
The mise en scene of the magazine can
easily be found by the reader by looking at
the costume, lighting, setting and props in
the music magazine
MISE-EN-SCENE
7. Drop cap lettering is used at the start of the
text, so the reader knows where to start
reading from . It also gives a aesthetically
pleasing look to the format of the text
The drop caps is usually a different font from
the other text and is a lot larger in size to
stand out to readers. Sometimes the drop
caps use a colour background to make it
stand out from the normal/image
background it is behind
DROP CAPS
8. The way the double page is laid out in the magazine
is a different compared to the front cover or the
contents page, since it only focuses on one subject
The masthead is usually the band/artist name that
they are talking about on the double page spread
The typography is very small and squashed together
so there is lots of space for the main image and sub
images
There is usually a colour scheme but not always, in
this case it is black and yellow in the music magazine.
The colour scheme makes it easier to read and
identify parts of the typography
LAYOUT
The layout structure is very simple to
read and looks aesthetically pleasing to
the reader with lots of images to look at
while reading the article/interview of
the band/artist
Sometimes the double page spread has
a small box for extra information e.g.
The new album they are releasing
