The focus group provided feedback on what they expect and find appealing in pop music videos. They expect the artists to be adolescents and the videos to include high key lighting, fun settings, and fashionable clothing. Props like glow sticks and makeup should connote happiness. The narrative should introduce the artist, have an intense middle, and a happy ending. Female artists should wear party makeup and fashionable/party dresses. The feedback will help the creator choose conventional elements to appeal to the target audience.
2. What age of people do you expect
to see in pop music videos?
100% of the people who answered this
question said adolescence.
This helped me establish I would need to
cast individuals who were in this age
category.
By achieving this i would be able to
appeal to the target audience and
conform to conventions of the genre.
3. What would you find most
appealing in a Pop music video?
90% responded with the answer high key lighting, settings
which connote fun, fashionable clothing, and 10% said high
key lighting, country settings such as fields, plain clothing.
Therefore I realised to appeal to my target audience I
would have to ensure mise-en-scene was focused on and
conformed to conventions.
I would have to make sure high key lighting is in most
scenes, I will achieve this by using lights facing them
toward the setting of where I am filming.
Secondly I will have to spend a significant amount of time
to ensure all setting being used connote fun.
Finally I will have to spend time choosing conventional
fashionable costumes.
If I achieve all of these my production will be conventional
and appealing to the target audience and therefore
successful.
4. What props do you feel will be
most conventional for a pop music
video?
This was another question where one answer got 100% of
the responses this was, ‘glow sticks, flowers, make-up, hair
products and UV face paint.
I realised all of these props connote happiness and fun, the
majority of the target audience may be able to relate these
props back to good memories they have. For example UV
face paint may remind some of the focus group of a festival
they went to.
I understand that I do not need to use these exact props in
my production, I just need to ensure I am using props
which signify fun and enjoyment so they are conventional
and appealing for the target audience.
I also feel it would be helpful if I did use props which the
target audience could relate to memories of events that
they have previously enjoyed.
5. What would appeal to you most
where the narrative is concerned?
The answer that got the highest response rate is
‘introduction to the artist, intense middle and
happy ending’
This helped me understand that I will need to
spend a significant amount of time planning my
narrative and ensuring it is conventional.
I will aim to introduce the artists, maybe through
close-ups signifying their importance, then
having some problem in the middle which will
keep the audience intrigued, and then finally at
the end the problem will be solved creating the
happy ending.
6. What make-up would you expect
female artist to wear in the video?
75% responded saying party wear make-up.
I assume this is because they will idolise the artists for the
looks and fashionable make-up so they would like to see it,
it could also be because the target audience would expect
to see a party in a pop music video.
25% however said they would just like to see foundation
and nothing else, this could be because they can idolise the
artists look with out make up.
Therefore I will aim to have a party scene where my artists
wear for example bright lipstick so the mise-en-scene
makeup can connote happiness, but I will also have lip
syncing scenes where the females will wear little makeup.
This will ensue that I am conforming to conventions and
appealing to my audience through an aesthetically pleasing
production piece.
7. What type of clothing would you
expect females to wear in the
video?
Fashionable clothing and party dresses is
what got the majority vote.
This means when I am focusing on mise-
en-scene I will make sure that the
costumes I am choosing for the artist to
wear are conventional and signify fun and
enjoyment all the way through the video.
