2. The front cover of the album has the dropout bear
in the centre which is a mascot that has become
accustomed to KanyeWest has it almost made a
appearance of the front cover of his other albums
College Dropout (2004) and Graduation (2007).
The recurring theme that KanyeWest has including
in his first three albums allows the audience to
create a connection with each and every one of his
albums as it creates a sense of a journey. For
example, the title of the albums create a link with
school students as he goes from being a college
dropout to eventually graduating.
The dropout bear is wearing school attire as he is
dressed in school uniform. He goes to a very
prestigious as the wooden doors and dark colours
give it a vintage feel to it as it looks as if he is going
to a mansion like house. The big doors give it a
daunting feeling to it as they are towering over him
due to there big size.
The typography is very visible KanyeWest’s
name is put in a colour that stands out but
doesn’t effect the styling conventions of the
front cover as it still adds to the rich looks to it.
It also has a noticeable feature to the text as
the “Y” is in upper case.
Below the name of the artists there is the title
of the album with a little emblem next to it
which looks like it could be the emblem of the
college that the dropout bear is attending.
Front Cover
3. CD Cover
The dropout bear is shown sitting down at
a desk while being surrounded by books.
This links back to the theme of the
Digipak as it implies that he is in college.
The styling of the CB Cover looks very old-
fashioned as they use books that look very
dated as they are very thick which also
links back to the style of the college.
The typography that is used for the CD cover is
very effective as it stands out which makes it easy
for the audience to acknowledge the name of the
CD.The white text is in a clear font that stands
out from the black background as the colours
contrast very well. The college emblem is
included on the CD cover.
4. Dropout Bear
The dropout bear is a key stylistic convention throughout the Digipak as it stars in several
parts of the Digipak as we see him in the front cover all the way to the back cover.
In the Digipak there is a website to go buy merchandise that relates to the dropout which
shows that Kanye West is using the dropout bear for a form of business and money
making as it has become really popular with his fans.
We see the dropout bear in several different surroundings and scenarios which makes the
narrative of the Digipak stronger as it represents his journey throughout a day of college.
There is a close up of a wooden box near a door that reads ‘Tardus Subscriptio’ that is
Latin for late registration that links back to the title of the album itself.
5. Back cover
The colour motif has been continued on the back
of the album as they have kept the design
consistent throughout the styling of the Digipak.
The back cover is very simplistic as there are no
bold production logos or track lists as the dropout
bear was the main focus throughout the album
cover.
The dropout bear is shown leaving
through the doors that he was
seen walking through on the front
cover of the album. This kept a
consistent theme throughout the
Digipak as it represented a whole
day of college for the bear as we
saw him in several different
scenarios. We see his shadow
behind him due to the good
lighting as we know he is walking
to wards the light as he leaves
through the doors.
The track list is printed
side ways as this allowed
them to include the tracks
without them obstructing
the image of the dropout
bear.
