The 1975 self-titled album packaging has a monochromatic black and white color scheme throughout that represents the band's indie rock genre. Music videos for songs from the album like "Chocolate" and "Sex" also use only black and white. This gives the band a retro, mysterious feel. While simple in layout, the packaging effectively promotes the band, their music, and their record label within the conventions of the indie genre.
2. The front cover of the self titled album 'the 1975' is
simplistic. The dark colours represent their indie rock
genre as music videos within this genre are often edited to
be in black and white.
Tracks off this album which have been made into music
videos are 'chocolate', 'sex', 'the city' and all of these are in
black and white which shows a recurrent theme.
This has become part of their recognizable image and
gives the band a retro feel. The lights and the lit up sign
'the 1975' make it seem mysterious and like something
dark is happening which we know is a theme throughout
the album as there are some 'deep' themes throughout
the songs.
3. The back cover of this album is similar to the front in
terms of its monochromatic colour scheme and
layout.
There is a black square in the middle of the picture
which is lit up with white light. The songs are written
in white sans serif writing which makes them easy to
read and fits with the simple theme and layout.
The fact that the artist isn't on the front cover is
typical of the indie genre as they represent
themselves purely through their music rather than
through plastering their face on the front cover to let
people know who they are.
The reflection on the floor of the album could
represent them reflecting on themselves or that their
music is reflective of something else.
Their record company's label is on the back cover
which promotes the record label through the band
and could increase sales.
4. The CD in the digipak is all black and the band name
'THE1975' is written in a darker shade. This allows the CD
to stick to the gray scale colour scheme but allows the
name to still stand out.
The black CD with the white inner part also makes it look
like a record from when people used to listen to things on
vinyls and record players. This again its in with the retro
theme which they use to represent themselves. It shows
that their style is classic and not like a conventional pop
song which would be found in the charts with people
dancing in high fashion clothes but instead offers a
different approach to music.
5. The inside cover is a very conventional inside cover as it
contains a lot of text and logos of companies involved in
the production of the album and this makes it seem
professional and legitimate.
Its important to achieve this image as it promotes it as
good quality and an album which isn't certified may look
shabby and not good. It gives information about the album
as well as people involved with making it.
It also fits with the theme and style of the whole digipak,
black and white in colour with a sans serif font, easy to
read although its small but it needs to be this size in order
to fit all of the necessary information on.
