2. INTRODUCTION
The digipak I have decided to look at is the Mumford and Sons ‘sigh no
more’ which originates form the Indie folk genre. Windows and
buildings are a common theme that run throughout the digipak as well
as the band themselves. In addition, there is a simplistic element in the
house style implied through the neutral, light and airy colour scheme.
3. ANALYSIS
FRONT COVER
▸ From the front cover we can clearly see the
band dressed in garments commonly
associated with the indie folk genre, stood in
the window of an old style house implied
through the old fashioned sash windows
once again complimenting the indie folk
genre. The bands name has been cleverly
placed to highlight the band are in the
window however, does not overpower to
artistic scene indie scene. The lightly
coloured pavement provides an apt
backdrop for the title written in black. The
building is white with has connotations of
purity and simplicity which is common
theme.
4. ANALYSIS
INSIDE
▸ There is not much that catches the eye
on the inside except the words ‘For
Francois’ which could indicate who the
album is based on or could also imply
that the album is a memorable for an
associate of the band. The typewriter
style font fits perfectly with the indie
genre. furthermore the small print
below could suggest the words above
are impotent to the band or message
of the album. The plain aesthetic adds
to the theme of simplicity and purity.
5. ANALYSIS
INLAY
▸ The inlay features all for members of the band and
the style is in line with that of the front and back
cover, maintaining the house style. The use of
props (their instruments) signifies the roles each
of the band members play within the band and
additionally is very typical as indie artists are
generally seen with their instruments as they form
part of their image and represent their role. The
fact that the band are hanging out of the window
and appear not to be posing conveys the idea that
they are good friends and don't really care much
for formality and precise detail which is typical of
the indie genre as it represents a more rebellious
and rugged lifestyle. The light colours and facial
expressions imply themes of happiness and
relaxation feature in the album.
6. ANALYSIS
CD
▸ Th same font has been used
throughout to create a sense of
continuity and simplicity. It stands
out against the black background
which contrast with the imagery we
see on the front cover and inside.
The indie folk genre is evoked using
natural colours, traditional fonts and
the simplistic style.
7. ANALYSIS
BACK COVER
▸ Once again a window features on the back
cover continuing the house style of the
digipak. The window is shown to be
slightly open suggesting that the music on
the album may be refreshing. The track list
appears below the window in the same
traditional font style. The track titles are
separated by small vertical lines hinting at
the different messages the album may be
trying to promote through visual
separation. The back cover also features
the barcode and information about the
producer and links to people associated
with he album.
