2. Use Case Type of Adaptive Release
A student needs to retake an Assignment or
Test that is passed the due date and no longer
available.
Membership rule
3. Use Case Type of Adaptive Release
A student must “Mark as Reviewed” the course
syllabus before course material is made
available.
Review Status rule
4. Use Case Type of Adaptive Release
Students are broken up into project groups
based on their choice of topic and you want
them to have access to a private discussion
board to brainstorm.
Membership rule
5. Use Case Type of Adaptive Release
You provide a proctored on-line test and it
should only be available during certain times
and/or to certain groups.
Date/Time and Group rules
6. Use Case Type of Adaptive Release
A student must score greater than 90% on an
assignment in order to gain access to the next
lesson or lecture notes.

Editor's Notes
Welcome:
Adaptive Release feature controls the students’ access to course content, assessments, or tools/activities based on a set of rules or criteria.
Rules can be placed on anything from an Item or File, a Content Folder, Learning Module, Assignments and tests, and even things like links to Discussions or Blogs.
What to expect: The session will be broken up into 3 parts
Intro about me and what I do
Intro presentation to adaptive release,
What it is and how it promotes GTP & different learning styles.
Hands on portion where we work together on how to implement each type of adaptive release criterion.
Then I’ll introduce Advanced Adaptive Release
work independently or in small groups

There are 4 different types of rules represented in this table on the right
Look at the handout or up at the board and think about what use cases type rules or criteria
Leave the podium and talk briefly about each criteria.
What would you or you clients need, what would your students need?
GTP: promote faculty/student interaction asynchronously.
release a video lecture or sound recording to communicate directly with students when they normally wouldn’t be available.
to communicate due dates for recurring assignments
Pedagogically reinforce instructor expectations and where/when something is due.
to introduce a new topic on a recurring bases, perhaps on the days of the week when the class doesn’t meet.
Any questions or ideas here?
*My favorite* Strong tool from a technical/administrative standpoint, as well as promotes GTP
Technical/Administrative -
provide accommodations for individual students with special needs, for example if someone needs additional time to complete an assessment.
Separate content based on undergrad or graduate status.
GTP - Membership criteria can be used to target groups of students which promotes group-based learning and collaboration.
Provides students with a sign up sheet for topics of similar interests.
Reinforce GTP: develops reciprocity and cooperation among students.
Can you think of any ways that you’d use it?
Any questions so far?
Not the most dynamic tool. But…
When a student Marks something as reviewed certain course material or activities become available.
Emphasizes Active learning because it allows for instantaneous feedback to students.
This is a great tool for online only courses, it allows for interactivity, and simulates a sort of synchronous experience in an asynchronous environment.
GTP: a great way to emphasize high standards by showing they reviewed expectations such as the institution’s policy on academic integrity.
Any questions here?
The strongest in online pedagogy, but potentially the most time consuming adaptive release criterion.
GTP respects diverse talents and ways of learning by allowing instructors to release subsequent learning activities based on the performance for a certain graded assignment or activity.
This is sometimes referred to as individual learning paths.
If a student scores within a certain range you can release supplemental content, good or bad.
When they have achieved mastery they can move on to the next concept, learning activity, or assessment.
Keep in mind that the content you release can be in whatever format you choose (Course Item/Folder/Learning Module, PDF, Powerpoint, Multimedia, etcetera).
Any questions about this or any other criteria?
Use on any Item in a content area.
How to identify a content area?
they cannot be used on items in the Course Menu.
Instructors will have to prepare well in advance.
The tool emphasizes good teaching practices, but you must be willing to invest time in order to use this tool most effectively.
Example: set robust criteria on an entire course, or complete redesign to create individual learning paths.
Dummy accounts. Are highly recommended.
There is a Date Management under development
easier to copy Date/time restricted content in cases of re-teaching the course for subsequent semesters.
(SP12&13).
Search Date Management Quick Hit Video on Youtube to learn more.
Take a second to write that down
You’ll still need to utilize other tools to make optimal use of Adaptive Release.
Use of Rubrics for your gradeable work so that you can reinforce high expectation.
If you have a lot of multiple choice tests then you’ll have to make sure that the feedback is set up so can be provided with instantaneous feedback.
Any questions before we move into the hands on portion?
We’re starting with group/membership criteria. Let’s all get logged in.
Is everyone able to get in?
