8. John William Waterhouse
(1849-1917)
An English painter known for depictions
of women from both ancient Greek
mythology and Arthurian legend.
He was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite
movement whose aim was to reform art
by rejecting what it considered to be the
mechanistic approach first adopted by
Mannerist artists who succeeded Raphael
and Michelangelo.
In contrast, they wanted a return to the
abundant detail, intense color and
complex composition of Renaissance
Italian art as typified by Botticelli.
