15. Draw thumbnail sketch on paper first
Block-in light & shadow

Then start painting on canvas or a fresh piece of
paper
The painting doesn’t have to follow the sketch
What’s the procedure?

16. Paint from thin to thick, allow each layer to dry, block in the whole composition

17. 4 colors mixed to make a variety of colorful grays:
Black, white, (any) brown + (any) blue
Mixed together

21. 1. Underpainting:
Use black, white, brown and blue
to do a “limited palette” panting.
2. Then use full-color on top of the first layer.

22. The photo is only a reference – here the photo is combined with color from Masaccio’s “Adam and Eve.”
