3. Morphological Process and Word Formation
Morphological processes serve different functions. Some
occur to alter meaning and/or part of speech (derivational), others
show grammatical relationships between words.
Word formation is the creation of a new word. It’s a process
of forming words by combining root and affixal morphemes.

Is the process of putting words together to build a new one that ''does not denote two
things, but one'' and that is ''pronounced as one unit”.
What are the properties of compounds?
Compounds consist of:
– a head
– a modifier
e.g:
handbag=hand + bag;
wallpaper=wall + paper;
tear up= tear= up
take away= take= away
7. Open Compounds: Compounds written as separate words.
e.g : end zone, high school, wear away
Closed Compounds: Compounds written as single words.
e.g : newspaper, goldfish, highway.
Hyphenated Compounds: Compounds that are
hyphenated.
e.g : mother-in-law, second-rate, water-proof

A blending is a combination of two or more words to create a
new one, usually by taking the beginning of the other word and the
end of the other one
Ex:
transistor = transfer + resistor
emoticon = emotion + icon
webinar = web+ seminar
netizen = internet+ citizen
11. Back Formation
A complex word exists first, the non-affixed form is derived later, a
process in which a word changes its forms and function
Typically, a word of one type, which is usually a noun, is reduced to form a
word of another type,usually a verb. --nouns > verbs: reduction of nouns
to form verb
