Learning
Outcomes
At the end of this lecture, you
should be able to:
◦Describe type of critical thinking
tools and methods
◦Apply critical thinking tools to solve
problems
Observation
Active acquisition of
information from a primary
source (Wikipedia)
The action or process of
observing something or
someone carefully or in order
to gain information (Google)
Type of observation
Quantitative
Observations are
numerical
measurement
Eg. The mass of a
ball is 600g
Qualitative
Observations are
descriptions based
on senses
(feelings/emotion)
Eg. The ball is round
and red
Can you describe this picture based on
quantitative and
qualitative observations?
Quantitative Qualitative
(colour)
(shape)
Can you describe this picture based on quantitative and qualitative observations?
Observation Methods
Controlled
• Structured
• Lab
• Tools: checklist,
survey, coding
sheet
Naturalistic
• Unstructured
• Natural
environment
• Tools: video,
camera
Participant
• Unstructured
• Natural
environment
• Involvement
with
participants
Tool for
structured
observation
Exercise 1 –
Track your habits
To find out how frequent you:
• Use social media
• Walk 6000 steps
• Read quran
• Come to class on time
Track your habits in a week.
What do you learn from your
tracking? Are you happy with
the outcomes?
How to observe in a natural environment?
Exercise 2
Use AEIOU framework to observe people’s behaviour.
Please choose one.
• Bus stop
• Restaurant
• Park
Spend at least 30 minutes at your chosen venue. Present your
findings using AEIOU framework. What did you learn?
Evaluation
(Poth et al., 2015)
The systematic assessment of
the design, implementation or
results of an initiative for the
purposes of learning or
decision-making.
Evaluation
Methods
Usability Test
(usabilitytest.gov)
Usability testing refers to evaluating a product or service
by testing it with representative users.
Typically, during a test, participants will try to complete
typical tasks while observers watch, listen and takes
notes. The goal is to identify any usability problems,
collect qualitative and quantitative data and determine
the participant's satisfaction with the product.
To run an effective usability test, you need to develop a
solid test plan, recruit participants , and then analyze and
report your findings.
Questionnaires
PERCEIVED USABILITY
PERCEIVED USER SATISFACTION
Questionnaire to measure
perceived usability
Questionnaire to
measure perceived user
satisfaction
Perceived Player Satisfaction
Postgame Questions (short-answer
questions)
Q1 To what extent did the game hold your attention?
Q2 How much effort did you put into playing the game?
Q3 Did you feel you were trying your best?
Q4 To what extent did you lose track of time?
Q5 Did you feel the urge to see what was happening around you?
Q6 To what extent you enjoyed playing the game, rather than
something you were just doing?
Q7 To what extent did you find the game challenging?
Q8 How well do you think you performed in the game?
Q9 To what extent did you feel emotionally attached to the game?
Q10 To what extent did you enjoy the graphics and the imagery?
Q11 How much would you say you enjoyed playing the game?
Q12 Would you like to play the game again?
How About This Netflix Remote Control?
Does the remote look crowded?
Is the remote easy to use?
Is easy to learn new buttons on the remote?
Results
PERCEIVED USABILITY: PERCEIVED USER
SATISFACTION:
WHAT DO THEY
MEAN?
