Armed Resistance
Armed resistance is apt to be a tragic last resort in the life of the disinherited. Armed resistance has
an appeal because it provides a form of expression, of activity, that releases tension and frees the
oppressed from a disintegrating sense of complete impotency and helplessness. "Why can't we do
something? Something must be done!" is the recurring cry. By "something" is meant action, direct
action, as over against words, subtleties, threats, and innuendoes. It is better to die fighting for
freedom than to rot away in one's chains, the argument runs. (Before I'd be a slave I'd be buried in
my grave, and go home to my God and be free!) My mind goes back to the four lepers men sitting
and debating amongst themselves whether to go into the

Women 's Roles During The American Armed Forces
Combat roles are grueling and nerve breaking, with a lot of commitment and endurance required.
Masculinity is the most suited trait for anyone to fit adequately and perform effectively. Mostly, men
fit well in these roles due to their masculinity. However, women too, can perform as equally as
effective as men. The effectiveness and suitability of inclusion of women in major combat roles in
the American Armed forces has faced heated debates, between people who believe that the combat
roles are most suited for men, and those that term these people as sexists and argue that women
aren't as qualified and capable of fighting in war. In essence, women can be as effective as their
male colleagues in these combat roles.
Combat roles in the military and armed forces entail soldiers fighting at the battleground, under the
most adverse conditions, with heavy artillery and other supplies. Combat roles involve endurance
and physical strength, which most women might lack, whereas the opportunity to represent the
county at war needs to be open to all who are willing to sign up as a show of fairness in creation of
opportunity. Feminist proponents want more women included in combat positions and serving at the
war front, whereas opponents of the move, in public discourses, view this as unnecessary since
women are weaker. Personally, I think women should sign up and be allowed to fight just like their
male counterparts. The United States Armed Forces comprises of the Army, the Marine Corps,

Modern And Capable Armed Forces
Maintaining modern and capable armed forces is not an easy task. One of the most important tasks
for a country, state and society is to defend itself against attackers and other threats. Military force,
as Clausewitz made explicit, is not an end in itself and it only has meaning in relation to the future
desired political landscape. When internal political institutions function normally, the wielders of
sovereign power are the natural arbiters of last resort among competing interests and values in the
policy, including the subordination of the military to the highest political authorities.
Armed Forces of a country should be designed to fulfil all tasks given to them from political
authorities. Each country develops its armed forces based on specific conditions and requirements
drawn from national security policy and as stated in national security and national defense
strategies. National security strategy is aimed to enhance the safety of the nation's economic, social
and political institutions against different threats. Strategies also deal with complex and diverse
security challenges, like proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, climate change and
migrations. To accomplish and safeguard their own security, states are trying to depend on national
resources and also through the various international organizations and alliances.
Defense policy covers the military domain and involves quantitative issues of the size, recruitment
and supply of the military forces,

Singapore Armed Force And Manpower Using The Defense...
Introduction:
Singapore Armed force is the military arm of the Total defense of the republic of Singapore and acts
as the military component of the Ministry of defense. It comprises of three services like Republic of
Singapore navy, the Singapore army and the Republic of Singapore Airforce. Recently, the
technology advancement in Singapore armed force plays a significant role in all the services. There
may have some challenges and opportunities of using technology for the Singapore Armed forces.
Singapore armed force reduces manpower:
Certainly, there are several ways to cancel the thirty percent of the drop out in the manpower. By
leveraging on defense technology as the force multiplier, this makes to offset the manpower (Loo,
2013). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cutting edge:
SAF will have to move closer to the cutting edge and effective technologies which optimize the
global arms market. The transforming phase of technological innovation makes cutting edge
ineffective. Although there are some indications of countermeasures to optimize technology. It even
moves more to the global cutting edge of military technology requires spending more amount of
money. The SAF use the technology as force multipliers and particularly in the place of C4I
integration which makes to operate its different units in an incorporated manner. The Navy, Air
Force, and Army are interrelated through the advanced data links and networks to make coordinated
attacks and support for several forces. Technology is the essential factor in the SAF transformation
into 3rd generation fighting force.
The SAF recognize that technology is significant for reducing the limitations of a small population
of Singapore. It has one of the largest defense budgets on the Asia Pacific regions where Singapore
emphasized to maintain the spending on superior and sophisticated weaponry. The experimentation
and research help to create technological edge where the SAF had rudimentary capabilities. It is one
of the largest employers of scientist and engineers in Singapore. SAF tends to make considerable
resources to defense research and development and the experimentation. The education system of
Singapore has created national servicemen who tend to manage SAF consistent

Recent Work On Follow The Perturbed Leader ( Ftpl )...
Recent work on follow the perturbed leader (FTPL) algorithms for adversarial multi–armed bandit
problem has highlighted the role of the hazard rate of the distribution generating the perturbations.
Assuming that the hazard rate is bounded allows one to provide regret analyses for a variety of
FTPL algorithms for the multi–armed bandit problem. This paper pushes the inquiry into regret
bounds for FTPL algorithms beyond the bounded hazard rate condition. There are good reasons to
do so: natural distributions such as the uniform and Gaussian violate the condition. We give regret
bounds for both bounded support and unbounded support distributions without assuming the hazard
rate condition. We also disprove a conjecture that the Gaussian ... Show more content on

The former corresponds to infimal convolution smoothing and the latter corresponds to stochastic
(or integral convolution) smoothing (Abernethy et al., 2014). Having a generic framework for
understanding perturbations allows one to study a wide variety of online linear optimization games
and a number of interesting perturbations.
There has also been some work on understanding perturbation approaches in bandit problems.
Kujala and Elomaa (2005) and Poland (2005) both showed that using the exponential (actually
double exponential/Laplace) distribution in an FTPL algorithm coupled with standard unbiased
estimation techniques yields near–optimal O(NT logN) regret in T rounds with N arms. Unbiased
estimation needs access to arm probabilities that are not explicitly available when using an FTPL
algorithm. Neu and Bart´ok (2013) introduced the geometric resampling scheme to approximate
these probabilities while still guaranteeing low regret. Recently, Abernethy et al. (2015) analyzed
FTPL for adversarial multi–armed bandits and provided regret bounds under the condition that the
hazard rate of the perturbation distribution is bounded. This condition allowed them to consider a
variety of perturbation distributions beyond the exponential, such as gamma, Gumbel, Frechet,
Pareto, and Weibull.
Unfortunately, the bounded hazard rate condition is violated by two of the most widely known
distributions: namely the uniform1 and the Gaussian distributions. As a result, the

Colombia And The Colombian Armed Conflict
Introduction
Colombia is facing an internal armed conflict for more than six decades. The causes for the
Colombian armed conflict can be more than one which include the conflict over land ownership, the
existence of marked economic differences, the pursuit of civilians because of their political
orientation. It also highlights the persistence of guerrillas with communist orientation and the
existence of drug traffickers that have involved their corruption to all levels of the Colombian
sociaty. The narco guerrillas and drug traffickers have given the idea to make a lot of money easy
and fast. So culturally in Colombia many people believe in this concept for that reason there is a lot
of corruption in Colombia, people porsuit this idea. The corruption in Colombia is much seen in the
misuse or abuse of public power for private or personal gains, meaning that this phenomenon is not
limited to civil servants, it is also defined as the set of attitudes and activities through which a
person violates commitments made himself, using the privileges granted, those agreements made
with the aim of obtaining a extra benefits. Usually there are bandits looking for weak people, who
are easy to persuade to with the idea to make extra money, or they infiltrate state institutions military
units focusing on public contracting where subornment and corruption transcends from national
entities to military units, consolidating often interpreted in a weak, inefficient legal system

Children in Armed Conflict/Child Soldiers in the Realm of Human Security
Introduction
A widely misunderstood concept of human security is the existence of child soldiers. Child soldiers
are what the United Nations and other international organizations refer to as any person below 18
years of age who is "associated with an armed force or armed group." They have been recruited or
used by an armed force or group in any capacity, including but not limited to being employed as
fighters, cooks, porters, messengers, spies or for sexual purposes. It does not only refer to a child
who is taking or has taken a direct part in hostilities."

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is one of the most widely researched
aptitude tests available in this country. It is used extensively in the military, but also has been made
available to students in secondary and post–secondary education (Whiston, 2013, p. 176). It is a
group–administered, multiple–aptitude battery that has been used since 1976. The ASVAB is
required upon being admitted into any of the Armed Services, and was created as an instrument
specifically for those who choose to join the Armed Forces. Additionally, the ASVAB is frequently
used in schools where career counseling is available. The ASVAB has application outside of the

However, in 1950, the Services returned to using a single test, the Armed Forces Qualification Test
(AFQT). This test was developed and modeled after the AGCT, and was the first test used in the
military as a screening instrument. It measured the individual's general ability to grasp military
training within in the necessary allotted time, and it also offered a uniform measure of the
individual's potential performance in the military. Also, tests like The Army Classification Battery
and the Navy Basic Test Battery were used to classify recruits into service specific jobs. In 1968, the
ASVAB was introduced as a part of the Student Testing Program. The Air Force was the first to use
the ASVAB in 1973, followed by the Marine Corps in 1974. However, the Army and Navy did not
adopt the ASVAB until 1976, after the Department of Defense decided that all Services should use it
for the purpose of screening enlistees and placing them in military jobs. The AFQT has been mostly
retained and is now a subtest of the ASVAB. Since the introduction and adoption of the ASVAB, it
has undergone many changes as far as content and scoring.
Scoring for the ASVAB uses the IRT model. The model underlying the ASVAB scoring is a three–

Women 's Armed Services Integration Act
Women now make up 14 percent of the active–duty military in the United States, which is up from
1.6 percent, 25 years prior. (Christian Science Monitor, 1). In 1948, President Truman signed the
Women 's Armed Services Integration Act which created the role of women in the military. This law
meant that each branch of the service was allowed to have one female Colonel (Byfield, 12). As of
2015, there are many women who serve as Generals and Admirals. All of these roles are non–
combative. Even though some women can do anything a man can do, the vast majority can not,
therefore making it an unsafe idea to place these women into combat positions.
Women hold many diverse positions in the armed forces. The vast majority of women work in areas

In terms of modern–day combat, women do not have an equal opportunity to survive."(Messay, 3)
Some argue that it is a women 's right to be in combat, but anyone will agree that equal opportunity
does not play part in combat. "Feminists and their supporters want to gender–neutralize the military
be incrementally ditching common sense policies. This latest study, which claims that women can be
trained to be like men, contributes to this misguided ideology, weakens the force structure at its
core, and puts America 's military personnel in peril." continues Lt. Col. Maginnis. (Messay, 3)
When we try to force and shove women into dangerous situations, we are ignoring their rights
instead of protecting them. The dropout rate for women is higher than for men. Leading the dropout
rates are white women with an average rate of 43%, followed by black women at 33% and Hispanic
women with 31% (Park). This can be directly pointed to the physical demands that a women faced
in basic training.
The possibility of women becoming prisoners of war is more likely to happen. One case in which
this happened is of Melissa Rathbun–Nealy, a military trained truck driver. During the Gulf War, she
was stationed in Dhahran. The Iraqis captured her and held her for 33 days before she

Armed Conflict
Several similarities exist between the conflict incurred by European settlers with Native Americans
in the depictions of Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega's La Florida del Inca, and Gaspar Perez de Villagra's
Historia de la Nueva Mexico. Excerpts from both works can be found in the compendium edited by
Harold Augnebraum and Magartie Fernandez Olmos entitled The Latino Reader: Five Centuries of
an American Literary Tradition from Cabeza de Vaca to Oscar Hijuelos. In both narratives, the
authors chronicle Spaniards unlawful dispossession of territory that was previously inhabited by
Native Americans. Quite naturally, these natives resisted this early form of larceny, which
oftentimes resulted in an armed conflict between the two disparate groups. However, it is fairly
apparent that both authors viewed this conflict and the appropriation of the Native Americans' land
as largely religious matter, which was justified by the sake of Christianity. The narratives are at
variance predominantly in their depiction of the natives during this conflict, however. Whereas de
Villagra's depiction is decidedly less concerned with these natives and their point of view, Vega
frequently takes pains to portray the humanity and dignity of the Native Americans encountered by
the Spanish in Florida. The author's proclivity to do so is exemplified by his description of the fate
of Juan Ortiz, a Spaniard who was captured by Native Americans in Florida. To illustrate the

United States Armed Forces Are Only For The Rough And Tough
The United States Armed Forces are only for the rough and tough. I learned about the military
through commercials on television, my family members who veterans, and recruiters walking are
thought my neighborhood and at school when I was a child. "Join the most powerful military in the
world," said a military poster I had seen walking home from work one day and the "Be All That You
Can Be" Army commercials played while I was watching television. I believed that if I was rough
and tough enough to join the military then I could do anything I put my mind to. It became a
challenge and I decided to take on the challenge.
I recall the very day I decided to join the military. As I sat in keyboard class, the teacher turn on the
television. The news was on with a live broadcast of the Twin towers located in New York. Smoke
was coming from one of the towers. Seeing this major event happen caused everyone in my class to
talk. Some of my classmates started screaming and crying when the plane hit the other tower. School
was released early because of the amount of students who had relatives that worked in the twin
towers. Seeing all of my classmates and the other kids at my school crying caused something inside
me to want to make a difference and fight for my country. Without doing any research of my own
about the different branches of the military, I chose to join the Army. On the way home, I went to the
nearest recruiting office and that became the beginning of my military career.

The issue of women involved in armed conflict has been a reoccurring problem in countries that are
plagued by war for decades. Due to this problem women are taken in by soldiers and are sexually
violated, and sold as sex slaves. Also they are faced with economic, abduction's, and healthcare
problems. They have a lack nutrition, physiological problems such as depression, and sexual
transmitted diseases. After being sexually violated they have become outsider and are later rejected
by their families and society. In many countries that in present day are in war face many of these
issues and they are reoccurring events that happen every day in these peoples lives. The most well

The Armed Forces
I am against the inclusion of women in the armed forces based on the utilitarian concepts of the
happiness of society as a whole, and the effectiveness of the armed services. I also draw conclusions
from the Aristotelian principles of justice and women's ability to be worthy of being soldiers
Since the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2011, there has been a quiet uproar over the idea of
female combat forces in our military. There are strong arguments from either side of the aisle; The
maintaining of historical values in the military, or the modernization of our armed forces. Most are
political or social arguments, pathos rhetoric in a logos dispute.
Taking a philosophical perspective on the case of women in the military would entail looking at the
problem from two sides: the effect it would have on society and the effect it has on the Armed
Forces. To argue it from either side will require the ascertaining of concepts based on great thinkers
such Bentham, Nozick, and Aristotle.
The defense of women in the military comes from the libertarian perspective that people have a
natural right to take part in any activity that they want to and have the ability to. Arguments for
being able to enlist in the active combat services of the military could be drawn parallel to the
arguments against the draft and forced enlistment.

in. This was a breach of the American people's rights to

Armed In Schools
Since 2010, there have been 109 school shootings in the United States. This is not new, with the first
recorded school shooting dating back to 1764. Ever since the Columbine shooting on April 20th,
1999, there has been a debate across the country on gun use and restrictions in the United States.
Teachers need to be armed in schools. The current system of prevention has only shown to be
ineffective and unnecessarily expensive. Firstly, police officers cannot always get to the crime scene
in time to prevent deaths. According to Steve Siebold, a self–proclaimed expert and author of the
article "Every Teacher in America Should Have a Gun," found in The Huffington Post, he quotes
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr., "simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best

Women Of The United States Armed Forces
Women are vital to the stability and efficiency of all branches of the United States armed forces.
Although women's presence may be necessary to the operation of the military, their placement in
combat positions would prove to be a devastating mistake. The body of a woman is not made to
brave combat positions, and placing women into positions dominated by men could create a hostile
working environment. The atmosphere of battle is already heated, and placing more problems into
the equation could lead to the unraveling of military effectiveness as the country knows it.
Consequently, women should continued to be excluded from combat oriented positions in order to
preserve the superb work of the United States armed forces. Placing a woman into a field comprised
mostly of men would upset a balance of unit cohesion and morale among their male counterparts.
Unit cohesion "result[s] from proximity of group members over time; social similarities or
commonalities; success at joint tasks; and concerned, competent, honest leaders" (Simons). This
means that the individuals that comprise a combat unit must be able to relate to each other, and work
together in positive and constructive ways in order to carry out dangerous, high–risk missions.
During combat operations, soldiers and their units are confined to small spaces for extended periods
of time. The addition of women into this close quartered group would add "romantic and sexual

service is predicated by a lottery system, which determines whether they are to be on stand–by,

the age of 16. According to reports, there are no child soldiers serving in the armed forces of
Mexico. Where child soldiers are found in Mexico are with the opposition forces in the Chiapas
region and with the paramilitary forces maintained by the drug cartels. It has been noted that
children, especially boys, get recruited by the cartels as young as 11. These children live primarily in
the poorest regions of Mexico. Their families depend on the income these children generate for their

Who can understand modern warfare?
War has without a doubt changed extremely from what the term originally meant. War is already
hard to define, according to Clausewitz, war is "an act of force intended to compel our opponents to
fulfil our will... a continuation of political intercourse with a mixture of other means"(Michael
Sheehan, 2014, 217). More specifically, war was between countries/states and it involved open
armed conflict. But war cannot be defined like this anymore in our modern times.
With open conflict between nations and non–nation organizations, for example the War on
Terrorism, the definition above is no longer fully true. A better definition would be Hedley Bull's,
"organised violence carried on by political units against each other" (Michael Sheehan, 2014, 218).
Thus if the definition of war and how it's waged in the 21st century changed, theoretical approaches
best suited conceptually and analytically that can explain and understand modern war has also
changed.
Ironically, the theoretical approaches that seem to be best suited to understand and explain modern
war are two of the oldest theoretical theories; Realism and Liberalism. But which of these two is
more applicable; both have their strengths in relation to understanding and explaining modern
conflict, but Liberalism is bar

Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility Of The Armed...
Executive Summary:
In response to the earlier task where all Senior Stakeholder Relationship Representatives were
required to settle on a strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partner for BusComm
Enterprises, Armed Services YMCA of San Diego is hereby presented as the final choice. The
charitable organization offers numerous support services such as assistance to rehabilitate wounded
soldiers, free medical and psychological counseling, and programs to aid soldiers and their families.
This choice is also based on the known deficit of support to military men and women who
frequently suffer from life altering physical and emotional injuries. The Armed Services YMCA is a
well–organized and highly rated association, with a rich history of serving since the civil war. It is
thus a suitable strategic partner that fits our organizational goals and desire to integrate precedent

Community HousingWorks appeared capable of self–funding and represented a fairly common CSR
partner who wouldn't present BusComm Enterprises as any different among peers. It was also my

Armed Team Case Study
As armed citizens, we face unique challenges. We must use a series of skills in tandem, creating the
challenge of managing diverse strategies, tactics, techniques and tools, while most of our training is
separated. Mixed Martial Arts once faced this challenge, each art specializing in a subset of
technical skills that lead to a reduced ability to deal with different styles of attack, eventually the
essential fundamentals were fused in cohesive core. The same conundrum faces the armed citizen.
Developing the fundamental skills of communicating, moving, hands in a defensive position, and
presenting the firearm, need to be trained together. A synergistic approach to training yields valuable
insight into the difficulties the of prioritizing and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Compression is the length of the arms of both the attacker and defender, or a distance that allows the
gun to be grabbed. The compressed position allows us greater control over the firearm. Extension is
the end of the draw, arms extended in our final firing position. This the best position to use our
sights and control the firearm, if there is adequate space. Beyond contact range we find several
positions that occur needing practice to solve the timing issue of maintaining trigger finger and
muzzle discipline. One of these is the hand on the gun and the support hand extended to the threat,
possibly emphasizing the command of stay back, or handing valuables to the attacker. Practice
bringing the support hand back rapidly to the chest , moving to the side, thus ensuring we don't
shoot ourselves when we draw. The concealed, or surreptitious draw using our body to conceal our
draw with a distracted adversary, is an area of concern. Muzzle and trigger discipline needs to be
strictly followed. There is a tendency to sweep the firearm to the target, muzzling ourselves and
others, conversely slowing the presentation of the

America 's Armed Forces : Behind The Scenes
America's Armed Forces: Behind the Scenes Millions of Americans support the Armed Forces,
however, they do not know about the struggles that service members and their families must
undergo. PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), deployment, sexual preference, and a fragmented
education are some of the innumerable problems that they must take up. However, there are several
organizations that subsidize service members, their families, and veterans. These organizations are
the light in the dark; they can offer anything from health care to a college education. PTSD, or post–
traumatic–stress–disorder, is a psychological condition that several military veterans receive over
the course of their military career (opposing viewpoints in context: PTSD). PTSD occurs when a
human mind encounters numerous near–death or high–tension situations. An example of a near–
death experience could be an explosion in a person's proximity or a fatal injury. An example of a
high–tension situation could be defusing a bomb or being in a delicate procedure where a mistake
could mean death. PTSD has varying degrees of effect. A patient with mild PTSD may have minor
vexations, while a patient with severe PTSD may have serious mental disorders ("PTSD"). The
effects of PTSD include severe flashbacks, extreme depression, high irritability, and erratic sleep
schedules ("PTSD"). Studies show that twenty percent of soldiers will develop a variation of PTSD
in their lifespan ("PTSD"). PTSD evolved from the

Child Soldiers: Converting Innocent Children into Armed...
"I would like to give you a message, please do your best to tell the world what is happening to us,
the children. So that other children do not have to pass through this violence."
These are the words of a 15–year–old girl in Uganda. Like her, there are an estimated 300,000
children under the age of eighteen who are serving as child soldiers in about thirty–six conflict
zones (Shaikh). Life on the front lines often brings children face to face with the horrors of war. Too
many children have personally experienced or witnessed physical violence, including executions,
death squad killings, disappearances, torture, arrest, sexual abuse, bombings, forced displacement,
destruction of home, and massacres. Over the past ten years, ... Show more content on

This is the same situation that Juliet faced: "Young girls were forced into sexual relationships with
men who were above our age. I was forced to become a rebel's wife. They said "no issues" either
you go with this man or we kill you. I got pregnant at a very early age with that man" ("Juliet's
Journey"). There are no excuses that can justify the treatment of child soldiers. Children are among
the saddest victims of conflict: they rarely emerge from military service with a sense of their own
worth and identity. Worse, they often experience violence that leaves them physically or
psychologically scarred. Facing a difficult adolescence, many turn to drugs, alcohol, and anti–social
behavior. No child should ever have to face the horrors and lasting effects of war.
While child soldiers exist in many countries all over the world, there is a dire need in Chad to find a
solution to this problem. Chad, located in north– central Africa, has seen a growing number of child
soldiers over the past few years. It is estimated that there exists approximately 7,000 to 10,000 child
soldiers in armed forces across Chad. This epidemic in Chad is mainly caused by the recurring civil
war (Child Soldiers International, "Better Than Cure"). Rebel forces have made numerous attempts
to overthrow Idriss Deby, who rose to power in 1989 and remains the current president. In 2005, and
early 2006, rebel forces located in Sudan's Darfur region gained strength as well as sponsorship

The Servant Style Of Leadership In The Armed Forces
"Technology doesn't improve your leadership ability. You have got to lead those Soldiers, train those
Soldiers and maintain the standards even in wartime – spend time with the individual Soldier."–
SMA Julius W. Gates. Technology has directly influenced the style of prevalent leadership styles
used by Non Commissioned Officers (NCOs) over the decades. Individually Leaders choose to
illustrate one of the five modern leadership styles: Charismatic, Transformational, Visionary,
Transactional, or Servant. Since the early 1990's the Armed Forces have experienced force reduction
and the introduction of a new generation "The Millennium". The majority of the new generation has
adopted a Servant Style of Leadership. Technology has guided modern day Soldiers to become
lackadaisical and complacent and with the increase of technology has challenged the traditional
styles of leadership within the Non Commissioned Officer Corps by degraded the readiness of the
force. The working environment within the armed Forces is changing at a rapid pace, greatly
influenced by the growing workforce challenges of attracting and retaining a quality workforce,
shifting changes in social value systems and technological advancements. Their interdependent
effects will continue to exert powerful influences on the armed forces, its culture, and the view of
leadership. It is important to re–appreciate traditional motivation tools and philosophies in the light
of modern social changes. By adapting emerging

"War". As a kid growing up in America, it is a word that you become very accustom to hearing
whether it is from your television, parents, or teachers. In America's history, Americans have always
been adamant about upholding the strength of their Armed Forces and making sure no other country
becomes a threat of any sort. In the late 1800s, the United States Armed Forces created the military
which consist of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. All these forces are
obviously there for some reason which are reported on television becoming the talk of the American
adults and onto their children. Also, as children get higher in their grade level they begin learning
for themselves about the military. I couldn't tell you about how other children took in the
information of these Armed Forces, but I will tell you about mine. I would say that the thought of
the military did not come to me until high school, when I not only started to learn more about the
actions of the military and their actions but I actually begin to understand and take it in. As a child
you think of all these authorities, from the government to the military, as being our protectors when
in dangerous situations, yet looking into our history that is not always how the system has worked.
In some cases in our nation's history we have not picked the best fights but have done things that
have resulted in America being, in my opinion, a country that cannot stay out of situations which do

Diverse Personal Encounters With Non State Armed Actors
Diverse personal encounters with non–state armed actors animate my research agenda, and I seek to
discern the meaning of a picture formed by pieces of a puzzle collected during my years of military
service. As a peacekeeper in Kosovo, I witnessed how a random rifle shot could spark a series of
reprisals across invisible lines that separated villages. My soldiers and I were almost powerless to
stop them. On one hand, our legal mandate prevented our ability to take direct action. One the other,
we understood so little about our adversaries we did not fully know which action to take.
Subsequent experiences leading soldiers during counterinsurgency efforts in both Iraq and
Afghanistan immersed me again in the turmoil created by overlapping networks of non–state armed
groups competing for economic, social, and political power. Each incident revealed another piece of
the puzzle, but the picture it formed remained unclear. I started to wonder if the pieces actually fit,
or if I was putting them together incorrectly. I intuitively sensed the ascendant role of non–state–
armed actors in Kosovo. However, my experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan crystalized in me the
desire to explore the broader political and social ramifications of the rising influence of non–state
armed groups. I began to ponder the strategic impact of their decisions and actions on the long–term
evolution of political institutions. What are the consequences when local political elites try to

Armed Police Uniforms
Armed police officers create discrimination?
Do you think police officers should be armed if their job is to protect schools? Many will argue yes
because of safety reasons, but what if that leads to bigger problems? This has been a debate for years
and has caused to create many rules that have or have not worked. For example the Gun–Free
schools Act or the zero–tolerance policies. Although it protects students and can create a safe and
secure environment, police officers in schools should not be armed because it can create
discrimination, officers will feel with more power and authority, and take away student's education.
However, many might think police officers should be armed in case of an emergency. There has
been many incidents where shootings occurs at schools and the police officer's job is to protect
themselves and the lives of students and staff at any cost. You can argue this to be a good reason to
allow police officers to carry weapons. They feel they should be armed for protection, but many
police officers take advantage of that and feel they have the power to do anything, even to break a
law. It is not right for police officers to think they can break laws because everyone is equal and
having armed police officers will damage students in other ways.
Police officers do contribute to an environment of discrimination. Immigration has been a big
problem in our society because people like Donald Trump, for example, think immigrants got here
to destroy the country.

The Benefits Of Transgender In The Armed Forces
Transgender in the Armed Forces
Many go to risk their lives to serve our country and unfortunately many don't come home in the end.
Entering our armed forces brings great opportunities, but a lot of stress as well. Being given the
freedom and the chance to serve is phenomenal. Every race, gender, or sexual orientation should
have a right to join, or so we thought. Why shouldn't certain minority groups not be allowed to
serve?
Upon joining the armed forces many benefits step forward, but do some of these benefits go too far?
Many army recruiters come to schools and always mention the benefits. Transgender veterans or
personnel need medications and maybe some surgery which cost quite a sum of money that gets
passed to the government to pay (West). The government should not be paying for transition surgery
or medications, due to it being the taxpayers money(West). People that are transgender should be
able to pay for their own hormones and surgeries because other transgender people not in the
military do so(West). In many ways too they could be disqualified for the medications and the
surgery before entering the armed forces (Allen). Why should they be given special treatment for
being transgender, when someone else is just as qualified and willing is dismissed for depression or
some other medical need. Even with these exceptions the medications or surgery might even work in
the end. Transgenders have been known to be mentally unstable before joining the military because

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia Essay
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia
The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia, or FARC, have been waging a guerilla war against
the Columbian government for thirty–eight years. The organization has a Marxist–Socialist
ideological base and has been terrorizing Columbia for some time now. The most recent
development is Senator Martha Catalina Daniels was shot twice in the head and killed on March 3.
Her body and two others were found at the bottom of a ravine about twenty–five miles west of the
Columbia's capital, Bogotá. They had also been tortured.
This is not unusual for the FARC. It is not commonplace, but the FARC uses kidnapping to get what

It only leads to the belief that they do not wish to patch things up and stop the violence. They want a
socialist government and the Columbian people want the democratic system that is in place now. I
believe that until the FARC gets what they want, they will not stop their terrorist ways. So how does
the Columbian government accomplish this?
One way to do this is to stop their flow of money. The FARC has admitted to making their money
from the illegal drug industry. If the Columbian government can somehow intercept the drugs before
it leaves the country or intercept the millions of dollars flowing into Columbia from the drug sales,
then the FARC would have a difficult time getting the weapons they need to commit these terrorist
acts. The Columbian government is in the middle of trying to solve these problems and has been
since the Medellín and Cali "cartels" have been around. Obviously this has not been an easy task.
Since the late 1990's the United States and the Columbian government have been trying to work out
a plan to help the Columbian government fight the drug trade. It is called Plan Columbia and has
been in effect since late 1999 and early 2000. The objective of Plan Columbia is for the U.S. to shift
massive aid to the Columbian government. The amount of the aid is around $1.5 billion. This is to
help train the Columbian military on the war against drugs. The U.S. will

The Traditional Functions Of Police And Armed Forces
2 The traditional functions of the police and armed forces
The main aim of security activities is to preserve the values of society against external and internal
threats, preserve the peace and freedom of the people and to ensure the existence and smooth
development of society (Bebler et al., 1999). Perception of threats is crucial since threats generate
the functions of the two most important actors of the security system – the police and the armed
forces. Traditionally, the police are expected to play the central role in policing that has a narrow
law enforcement and crime control or crime repression focus (Greene, 2000). Police are therefore
traditionally responsible for public order and safety maintenance, for law enforcement, for

Armed forces exist to defend the state against real or potential external threats and as a coercive tool
to promote and protect national interests abroad (Edmonds, 2006). The core organizing principle for
regular armed forces in a traditional way is the defence of the national territory (Dandeker, 1994;
Grizold, 1999). Therefore, their traditional function is also deterrence and military attack.
Having in mind Bittner's (1970) definition of the police, which defines the police in terms of their
capacity to use non–negotiable coercive force in any situation that appears to require the prompt and
decisive response, the policing is carried out by several other organisations (constabulary forces),
including military (Whetstone, Walsh, Kelling, Parker Banton, & Brodeur, 2016).
Enloe (1990) dealt with the differences between the traditional characteristics of the police and the
armed forces. She described the main traditional characteristics of the police as follows:
the police usually do not perform their duties in other countries; they have personnel located
throughout the national territory;
the police operate in relatively small units;
the police are under the authority of civilian officials (local governments or ministries of

is the responsibility they hold, which is to train the enlisted force by "developing, preparing, [and]

Literary estimates show that FARC was responsible for the trade of nearly $2 million per day in
drug trafficking. Money and political strength were near the heart of the groups' daily functions. The
finance of terrorism is also where the vulnerability in their maintenance lives. As described by
Roberge (2013), "Financing terrorism's main conclusion, which is more implicit than explicit, is that
while combating terrorism financing is important to diminishing a terrorist group's capacity to inflict
harm, it is only one instrument among many with which to target organizations" (p.407). Through
land rights, political participation, or economic reform, Columbia would work diligently to bring an
end to a battle in 2014. Negotiations for peace began in 2012. It was believed that FARC was
responsible for the kidnapping of a Columbian senator from his aircraft followed by a mortar attack
on the Presidential Palace 6 months later. FARC had been labeled as the oldest, largest, most capable
and best equipped insurgency group. Fears mounted that, without peace negotiations, civilian
casualties would outweigh any attempts at casual negotiation. Unilateral cease fires were
unsuccessful. The only means of Columbian efforts was to being attacks that would challenge and
eliminate monetary power and members within authoritarian roles. Efforts were quickly noted. As

The United States Armed Forces Essay
There are currently 2,204,836 people serving in the United States Armed Forces. Females currently
make up 16.2% of those currently serving equating to 358,156 this number includes both enlisted,
reserve, and the officer corps. While the Armed Forces has downsized, the percentage of females
serving has increased with females now making up 17.8% of all active duty personnel and roughly
thirty–nine thousand serving as active duty officers. With the increasing diversity of the military,
Secretary of Defense Ash Carter officially opened all positions to females on 03–JAN–2016, in a
move to better strengthen the Armed Forces. (Demographics, 2013)
In 1981, the Supreme Court of the United States(SCOTUS) ruled on Rostker v. Goldberg that stated,
women would not be required to register for the Selective Service System(SSS) because they are not
able to serve in direct combat roles in any branch of the Armed Forces.(Rostker v. Goldberg) While
females have gone to war and been on the front lines, they have always been there indirectly. Until
the announcement by Secretary Carter on 03–DEC–2015 females were not allowed to directly serve
in combat units, or special operations. This change in policy by the United States Armed Forces
means there is precedence set by Rostker v. Goldberg in the case of females having to register for
the SSS. The SSS currently registers all males between the ages of eighteen to twenty–five, in the

Lifestyle Declaration in the Armed Services
In 1993 President Bill Clinton signed a law that set the policy of "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue,
and don't harass" when dealing with homosexuals serving in the Armed Services. The policy was a
compromise to allow homosexuals to legally serve in the military as long as they did not declare
their lifestyle or engage in conduct that was in violation of military good order and discipline.
Supporters viewed the law as a step forward in achieving equal rights for homosexuals. Opponents
remained concerned that the policy could jeopardize morale and unit effectiveness. "The Joint
Chiefs, including the chairman, had all came out against the president on gays serving in the
military" (Gates 440). Over time the military was able to adapt to the new policy and restore force
readiness. In 2010 the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was repealed and homosexuals were given the
opportunity to openly serve in the military. The Joint Chiefs once again objected and questioned the
timing of the change. Many believe the repeal was politically motivated and a bad idea that would
add additional disruption to an already strained fighting force. Every new service member must go
through Basic Training for up to 12 weeks depending on the branch of service. The purpose of Basic
Training is to indoctrinate the new service member into the ways of military life. New service

Armed Resistance

  • 1. Armed Resistance Armed resistance is apt to be a tragic last resort in the life of the disinherited. Armed resistance has an appeal because it provides a form of expression, of activity, that releases tension and frees the oppressed from a disintegrating sense of complete impotency and helplessness. "Why can't we do something? Something must be done!" is the recurring cry. By "something" is meant action, direct action, as over against words, subtleties, threats, and innuendoes. It is better to die fighting for freedom than to rot away in one's chains, the argument runs. (Before I'd be a slave I'd be buried in my grave, and go home to my God and be free!) My mind goes back to the four lepers men sitting and debating amongst themselves whether to go into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Women 's Roles During The American Armed Forces Combat roles are grueling and nerve breaking, with a lot of commitment and endurance required. Masculinity is the most suited trait for anyone to fit adequately and perform effectively. Mostly, men fit well in these roles due to their masculinity. However, women too, can perform as equally as effective as men. The effectiveness and suitability of inclusion of women in major combat roles in the American Armed forces has faced heated debates, between people who believe that the combat roles are most suited for men, and those that term these people as sexists and argue that women aren't as qualified and capable of fighting in war. In essence, women can be as effective as their male colleagues in these combat roles. Combat roles in the military and armed forces entail soldiers fighting at the battleground, under the most adverse conditions, with heavy artillery and other supplies. Combat roles involve endurance and physical strength, which most women might lack, whereas the opportunity to represent the county at war needs to be open to all who are willing to sign up as a show of fairness in creation of opportunity. Feminist proponents want more women included in combat positions and serving at the war front, whereas opponents of the move, in public discourses, view this as unnecessary since women are weaker. Personally, I think women should sign up and be allowed to fight just like their male counterparts. The United States Armed Forces comprises of the Army, the Marine Corps, ... • 5. Modern And Capable Armed Forces Maintaining modern and capable armed forces is not an easy task. One of the most important tasks for a country, state and society is to defend itself against attackers and other threats. Military force, as Clausewitz made explicit, is not an end in itself and it only has meaning in relation to the future desired political landscape. When internal political institutions function normally, the wielders of sovereign power are the natural arbiters of last resort among competing interests and values in the policy, including the subordination of the military to the highest political authorities. Armed Forces of a country should be designed to fulfil all tasks given to them from political authorities. Each country develops its armed forces based on specific conditions and requirements drawn from national security policy and as stated in national security and national defense strategies. National security strategy is aimed to enhance the safety of the nation's economic, social and political institutions against different threats. Strategies also deal with complex and diverse security challenges, like proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, climate change and migrations. To accomplish and safeguard their own security, states are trying to depend on national resources and also through the various international organizations and alliances. Defense policy covers the military domain and involves quantitative issues of the size, recruitment and supply of the military forces, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Singapore Armed Force And Manpower Using The Defense... Introduction: Singapore Armed force is the military arm of the Total defense of the republic of Singapore and acts as the military component of the Ministry of defense. It comprises of three services like Republic of Singapore navy, the Singapore army and the Republic of Singapore Airforce. Recently, the technology advancement in Singapore armed force plays a significant role in all the services. There may have some challenges and opportunities of using technology for the Singapore Armed forces. Singapore armed force reduces manpower: Certainly, there are several ways to cancel the thirty percent of the drop out in the manpower. By leveraging on defense technology as the force multiplier, this makes to offset the manpower (Loo, 2013). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cutting edge: SAF will have to move closer to the cutting edge and effective technologies which optimize the global arms market. The transforming phase of technological innovation makes cutting edge ineffective. Although there are some indications of countermeasures to optimize technology. It even moves more to the global cutting edge of military technology requires spending more amount of money. The SAF use the technology as force multipliers and particularly in the place of C4I integration which makes to operate its different units in an incorporated manner. The Navy, Air Force, and Army are interrelated through the advanced data links and networks to make coordinated attacks and support for several forces. Technology is the essential factor in the SAF transformation into 3rd generation fighting force. The SAF recognize that technology is significant for reducing the limitations of a small population of Singapore. It has one of the largest defense budgets on the Asia Pacific regions where Singapore emphasized to maintain the spending on superior and sophisticated weaponry. The experimentation and research help to create technological edge where the SAF had rudimentary capabilities. It is one of the largest employers of scientist and engineers in Singapore. SAF tends to make considerable resources to defense research and development and the experimentation. The education system of Singapore has created national servicemen who tend to manage SAF consistent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Recent Work On Follow The Perturbed Leader ( Ftpl )... Recent work on follow the perturbed leader (FTPL) algorithms for adversarial multi–armed bandit problem has highlighted the role of the hazard rate of the distribution generating the perturbations. Assuming that the hazard rate is bounded allows one to provide regret analyses for a variety of FTPL algorithms for the multi–armed bandit problem. This paper pushes the inquiry into regret bounds for FTPL algorithms beyond the bounded hazard rate condition. There are good reasons to do so: natural distributions such as the uniform and Gaussian violate the condition. We give regret bounds for both bounded support and unbounded support distributions without assuming the hazard rate condition. We also disprove a conjecture that the Gaussian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The former corresponds to infimal convolution smoothing and the latter corresponds to stochastic (or integral convolution) smoothing (Abernethy et al., 2014). Having a generic framework for understanding perturbations allows one to study a wide variety of online linear optimization games and a number of interesting perturbations. There has also been some work on understanding perturbation approaches in bandit problems. Kujala and Elomaa (2005) and Poland (2005) both showed that using the exponential (actually double exponential/Laplace) distribution in an FTPL algorithm coupled with standard unbiased estimation techniques yields near–optimal O(NT logN) regret in T rounds with N arms. Unbiased estimation needs access to arm probabilities that are not explicitly available when using an FTPL algorithm. Neu and Bart´ok (2013) introduced the geometric resampling scheme to approximate these probabilities while still guaranteeing low regret. Recently, Abernethy et al. (2015) analyzed FTPL for adversarial multi–armed bandits and provided regret bounds under the condition that the hazard rate of the perturbation distribution is bounded. This condition allowed them to consider a variety of perturbation distributions beyond the exponential, such as gamma, Gumbel, Frechet, Pareto, and Weibull. Unfortunately, the bounded hazard rate condition is violated by two of the most widely known distributions: namely the uniform1 and the Gaussian distributions. As a result, the ... • 11. Colombia And The Colombian Armed Conflict Introduction Colombia is facing an internal armed conflict for more than six decades. The causes for the Colombian armed conflict can be more than one which include the conflict over land ownership, the existence of marked economic differences, the pursuit of civilians because of their political orientation. It also highlights the persistence of guerrillas with communist orientation and the existence of drug traffickers that have involved their corruption to all levels of the Colombian sociaty. The narco guerrillas and drug traffickers have given the idea to make a lot of money easy and fast. So culturally in Colombia many people believe in this concept for that reason there is a lot of corruption in Colombia, people porsuit this idea. The corruption in Colombia is much seen in the misuse or abuse of public power for private or personal gains, meaning that this phenomenon is not limited to civil servants, it is also defined as the set of attitudes and activities through which a person violates commitments made himself, using the privileges granted, those agreements made with the aim of obtaining a extra benefits. Usually there are bandits looking for weak people, who are easy to persuade to with the idea to make extra money, or they infiltrate state institutions military units focusing on public contracting where subornment and corruption transcends from national entities to military units, consolidating often interpreted in a weak, inefficient legal system according to ... They have been recruited or used by an armed force or group in any capacity, including but not limited to being employed as fighters, cooks, porters, messengers, spies or for sexual purposes. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is one of the most widely researched aptitude tests available in this country. It is used extensively in the military, but also has been made available to students in secondary and post–secondary education (Whiston, 2013, p. 176). It is a group–administered, multiple–aptitude battery that has been used since 1976. The ASVAB is required upon being admitted into any of the Armed Services, and was created as an instrument specifically for those who choose to join the Armed Forces. However, in 1950, the Services returned to using a single test, the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). This test was developed and modeled after the AGCT, and was the first test used in the military as a screening instrument. It measured the individual's general ability to grasp military training within in the necessary allotted time, and it also offered a uniform measure of the individual's potential performance in the military. Also, tests like The Army Classification Battery and the Navy Basic Test Battery were used to classify recruits into service specific jobs. In 1968, the ASVAB was introduced as a part of the Student Testing Program. The Air Force was the first to use the ASVAB in 1973, followed by the Marine Corps in 1974. However, the Army and Navy did not adopt the ASVAB until 1976, after the Department of Defense decided that all Services should use it for the purpose of screening enlistees and placing them in military jobs. The AFQT has been mostly retained and is now a subtest of the ASVAB. Since the introduction and adoption of the ASVAB, it has undergone many changes as far as content and scoring. Scoring for the ASVAB uses the IRT model. The model underlying the ASVAB scoring is a three– parameter logistic (3PL) ("ASVAB Scoring", n.d.). • 17. Women 's Armed Services Integration Act Women now make up 14 percent of the active–duty military in the United States, which is up from 1.6 percent, 25 years prior. (Christian Science Monitor, 1). In 1948, President Truman signed the Women 's Armed Services Integration Act which created the role of women in the military. This law meant that each branch of the service was allowed to have one female Colonel (Byfield, 12). As of 2015, there are many women who serve as Generals and Admirals. All of these roles are non– combative. Even though some women can do anything a man can do, the vast majority can not, therefore making it an unsafe idea to place these women into combat positions. In terms of modern–day combat, women do not have an equal opportunity to survive."(Messay, 3) Some argue that it is a women 's right to be in combat, but anyone will agree that equal opportunity does not play part in combat. "Feminists and their supporters want to gender–neutralize the military be incrementally ditching common sense policies. This latest study, which claims that women can be trained to be like men, contributes to this misguided ideology, weakens the force structure at its core, and puts America 's military personnel in peril." continues Lt. Col. Maginnis. (Messay, 3) When we try to force and shove women into dangerous situations, we are ignoring their rights instead of protecting them. The dropout rate for women is higher than for men. Leading the dropout rates are white women with an average rate of 43%, followed by black women at 33% and Hispanic women with 31% (Park). This can be directly pointed to the physical demands that a women faced in basic training. The possibility of women becoming prisoners of war is more likely to happen. • 19. Armed Conflict Armed Conflict Several similarities exist between the conflict incurred by European settlers with Native Americans in the depictions of Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega's La Florida del Inca, and Gaspar Perez de Villagra's Historia de la Nueva Mexico. Excerpts from both works can be found in the compendium edited by Harold Augnebraum and Magartie Fernandez Olmos entitled The Latino Reader: Five Centuries of an American Literary Tradition from Cabeza de Vaca to Oscar Hijuelos. In both narratives, the authors chronicle Spaniards unlawful dispossession of territory that was previously inhabited by Native Americans. Quite naturally, these natives resisted this early form of larceny, which oftentimes resulted in an armed conflict between the two disparate groups. However, it is fairly apparent that both authors viewed this conflict and the appropriation of the Native Americans' land as largely religious matter, which was justified by the sake of Christianity. The narratives are at variance predominantly in their depiction of the natives during this conflict, however. Whereas de Villagra's depiction is decidedly less concerned with these natives and their point of view, Vega frequently takes pains to portray the humanity and dignity of the Native Americans encountered by the Spanish in Florida. The author's proclivity to do so is exemplified by his description of the fate of Juan Ortiz, a Spaniard who was captured by Native Americans in Florida. To illustrate the aggressive, hostile ... • 21. United States Armed Forces Are Only For The Rough And Tough The United States Armed Forces are only for the rough and tough. I learned about the military through commercials on television, my family members who veterans, and recruiters walking are thought my neighborhood and at school when I was a child. "Join the most powerful military in the world," said a military poster I had seen walking home from work one day and the "Be All That You Can Be" Army commercials played while I was watching television. I believed that if I was rough and tough enough to join the military then I could do anything I put my mind to. It became a challenge and I decided to take on the challenge. I recall the very day I decided to join the military. As I sat in keyboard class, the teacher turn on the television. The news was on with a live broadcast of the Twin towers located in New York. Smoke was coming from one of the towers. Seeing this major event happen caused everyone in my class to talk. Some of my classmates started screaming and crying when the plane hit the other tower. School was released early because of the amount of students who had relatives that worked in the twin towers. Seeing all of my classmates and the other kids at my school crying caused something inside me to want to make a difference and fight for my country. Without doing any research of my own about the different branches of the military, I chose to join the Army. Women In Armed Conflict Essay Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee Women in armed conflict Japan Staten Island Academy Alex Pillarella The issue of women involved in armed conflict has been a reoccurring problem in countries that are plagued by war for decades. • 29. The Armed Forces I am against the inclusion of women in the armed forces based on the utilitarian concepts of the happiness of society as a whole, and the effectiveness of the armed services. I also draw conclusions from the Aristotelian principles of justice and women's ability to be worthy of being soldiers Since the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2011, there has been a quiet uproar over the idea of female combat forces in our military. There are strong arguments from either side of the aisle; The maintaining of historical values in the military, or the modernization of our armed forces. Most are political or social arguments, pathos rhetoric in a logos dispute. Taking a philosophical perspective on the case of women in the military would entail looking at the problem from two sides: the effect it would have on society and the effect it has on the Armed Forces. To argue it from either side will require the ascertaining of concepts based on great thinkers such Bentham, Nozick, and Aristotle. The defense of women in the military comes from the libertarian perspective that people have a natural right to take part in any activity that they want to and have the ability to. Arguments for being able to enlist in the active combat services of the military could be drawn parallel to the arguments against the draft and forced enlistment. The draft forced members of the American public to participate in a war they often did not believe in. This was a breach of the American people's rights to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ever since the Columbine shooting on April 20th, 1999, there has been a debate across the country on gun use and restrictions in the United States. Teachers need to be armed in schools. The current system of prevention has only shown to be ineffective and unnecessarily expensive. Firstly, police officers cannot always get to the crime scene in time to prevent deaths. According to Steve Siebold, a self–proclaimed expert and author of the article "Every Teacher in America Should Have a Gun," found in The Huffington Post, he quotes Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr., "simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option." Officer John Diamond also states that these volunteer staff members would be thoroughly investigated. The country's current most common prevention tactic is to hire on–site police officers. • 35. Women Of The United States Armed Forces Women are vital to the stability and efficiency of all branches of the United States armed forces. Although women's presence may be necessary to the operation of the military, their placement in combat positions would prove to be a devastating mistake. The body of a woman is not made to brave combat positions, and placing women into positions dominated by men could create a hostile working environment. The atmosphere of battle is already heated, and placing more problems into the equation could lead to the unraveling of military effectiveness as the country knows it. Consequently, women should continued to be excluded from combat oriented positions in order to preserve the superb work of the United States armed forces. Placing a woman into a field comprised mostly of men would upset a balance of unit cohesion and morale among their male counterparts. Unit cohesion "result[s] from proximity of group members over time; social similarities or commonalities; success at joint tasks; and concerned, competent, honest leaders" (Simons). This means that the individuals that comprise a combat unit must be able to relate to each other, and work together in positive and constructive ways in order to carry out dangerous, high–risk missions. During combat operations, soldiers and their units are confined to small spaces for extended periods of time. Where child soldiers are found in Mexico are with the opposition forces in the Chiapas region and with the paramilitary forces maintained by the drug cartels. It has been noted that children, especially boys, get recruited by the cartels as young as 11. These children live primarily in the poorest regions of Mexico. • 39. The Nature Of Armed Conflict The nature of armed conflict in the 21st century Josh Camara 1227345 Pol 2I03 Dr. Mark Busser Friday November 7, 2014 Pol 2I03 Josh camara 1227345 2014–11–05 Who can understand modern warfare? War has without a doubt changed extremely from what the term originally meant. War is already hard to define, according to Clausewitz, war is "an act of force intended to compel our opponents to fulfil our will... a continuation of political intercourse with a mixture of other means"(Michael Sheehan, 2014, 217). More specifically, war was between countries/states and it involved open armed conflict. But war cannot be defined like this anymore in our modern times. With open conflict between nations and non–nation organizations, for example the War on Terrorism, the definition above is no longer fully true. A better definition would be Hedley Bull's, "organised violence carried on by political units against each other" (Michael Sheehan, 2014, 218). Thus if the definition of war and how it's waged in the 21st century changed, theoretical approaches best suited conceptually and analytically that can explain and understand modern war has also changed. Ironically, the theoretical approaches that seem to be best suited to understand and explain modern war are two of the oldest theoretical theories; Realism and Liberalism. But which of these two is more applicable; both have their strengths in relation to understanding and explaining modern conflict, but Liberalism is bar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Executive Summary: In response to the earlier task where all Senior Stakeholder Relationship Representatives were required to settle on a strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partner for BusComm Enterprises, Armed Services YMCA of San Diego is hereby presented as the final choice. The charitable organization offers numerous support services such as assistance to rehabilitate wounded soldiers, free medical and psychological counseling, and programs to aid soldiers and their families. This choice is also based on the known deficit of support to military men and women who frequently suffer from life altering physical and emotional injuries. The Armed Services YMCA is a well–organized and highly rated association, with a rich history of serving since the civil war. It is thus a suitable strategic partner that fits our organizational goals and desire to integrate precedent setting CSR practices. This charity also fits our budget and presents a unique opportunity to serve in a barely exploited area, which will appeal to our shareholders. Conversely, my analysis indicated that Invisible Children would require higher scaling of resources and commitment in order to make an impact while their thematic area may be hard to resonate with our audience. Elsewhere, Community HousingWorks appeared capable of self–funding and represented a fairly common CSR partner who wouldn't present BusComm Enterprises as any different among peers. We must use a series of skills in tandem, creating the challenge of managing diverse strategies, tactics, techniques and tools, while most of our training is separated. Mixed Martial Arts once faced this challenge, each art specializing in a subset of technical skills that lead to a reduced ability to deal with different styles of attack, eventually the essential fundamentals were fused in cohesive core. Beyond contact range we find several positions that occur needing practice to solve the timing issue of maintaining trigger finger and muzzle discipline. One of these is the hand on the gun and the support hand extended to the threat, possibly emphasizing the command of stay back, or handing valuables to the attacker. Practice bringing the support hand back rapidly to the chest , moving to the side, thus ensuring we don't shoot ourselves when we draw. America 's Armed Forces : Behind The Scenes America's Armed Forces: Behind the Scenes Millions of Americans support the Armed Forces, however, they do not know about the struggles that service members and their families must undergo. PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), deployment, sexual preference, and a fragmented education are some of the innumerable problems that they must take up. However, there are several organizations that subsidize service members, their families, and veterans. These organizations are the light in the dark; they can offer anything from health care to a college education. PTSD, or post– traumatic–stress–disorder, is a psychological condition that several military veterans receive over the course of their military career (opposing viewpoints in context: PTSD). PTSD occurs when a human mind encounters numerous near–death or high–tension situations. An example of a near– death experience could be an explosion in a person's proximity or a fatal injury. An example of a high–tension situation could be defusing a bomb or being in a delicate procedure where a mistake could mean death. PTSD has varying degrees of effect. A patient with mild PTSD may have minor vexations, while a patient with severe PTSD may have serious mental disorders ("PTSD"). The effects of PTSD include severe flashbacks, extreme depression, high irritability, and erratic sleep schedules ("PTSD"). Like her, there are an estimated 300,000 children under the age of eighteen who are serving as child soldiers in about thirty–six conflict zones (Shaikh). Life on the front lines often brings children face to face with the horrors of war. There are no excuses that can justify the treatment of child soldiers. Children are among the saddest victims of conflict: they rarely emerge from military service with a sense of their own worth and identity. Worse, they often experience violence that leaves them physically or psychologically scarred. Facing a difficult adolescence, many turn to drugs, alcohol, and anti–social behavior. No child should ever have to face the horrors and lasting effects of war. • 51. The United States Armed Forces "War". As a kid growing up in America, it is a word that you become very accustom to hearing whether it is from your television, parents, or teachers. In America's history, Americans have always been adamant about upholding the strength of their Armed Forces and making sure no other country becomes a threat of any sort. In the late 1800s, the United States Armed Forces created the military which consist of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. All these forces are obviously there for some reason which are reported on television becoming the talk of the American adults and onto their children. Also, as children get higher in their grade level they begin learning for themselves about the military. I couldn't tell you about how other children took in the information of these Armed Forces, but I will tell you about mine. I would say that the thought of the military did not come to me until high school, when I not only started to learn more about the actions of the military and their actions but I actually begin to understand and take it in. • 53. Diverse Personal Encounters With Non State Armed Actors Diverse personal encounters with non–state armed actors animate my research agenda, and I seek to discern the meaning of a picture formed by pieces of a puzzle collected during my years of military service. As a peacekeeper in Kosovo, I witnessed how a random rifle shot could spark a series of reprisals across invisible lines that separated villages. My soldiers and I were almost powerless to stop them. On one hand, our legal mandate prevented our ability to take direct action. One the other, we understood so little about our adversaries we did not fully know which action to take. Subsequent experiences leading soldiers during counterinsurgency efforts in both Iraq and Afghanistan immersed me again in the turmoil created by overlapping networks of non–state armed groups competing for economic, social, and political power. Each incident revealed another piece of the puzzle, but the picture it formed remained unclear. I started to wonder if the pieces actually fit, or if I was putting them together incorrectly. I intuitively sensed the ascendant role of non–state– armed actors in Kosovo. However, my experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan crystalized in me the desire to explore the broader political and social ramifications of the rising influence of non–state armed groups. I began to ponder the strategic impact of their decisions and actions on the long–term evolution of political institutions. Many will argue yes because of safety reasons, but what if that leads to bigger problems? This has been a debate for years and has caused to create many rules that have or have not worked. For example the Gun–Free schools Act or the zero–tolerance policies. Although it protects students and can create a safe and secure environment, police officers in schools should not be armed because it can create discrimination, officers will feel with more power and authority, and take away student's education. However, many might think police officers should be armed in case of an emergency. There has been many incidents where shootings occurs at schools and the police officer's job is to protect themselves and the lives of students and staff at any cost. You can argue this to be a good reason to allow police officers to carry weapons. They feel they should be armed for protection, but many police officers take advantage of that and feel they have the power to do anything, even to break a law. It is not right for police officers to think they can break laws because everyone is equal and having armed police officers will damage students in other ways. Police officers do contribute to an environment of discrimination. Entering our armed forces brings great opportunities, but a lot of stress as well. Being given the freedom and the chance to serve is phenomenal. Every race, gender, or sexual orientation should have a right to join, or so we thought. Why shouldn't certain minority groups not be allowed to serve? Upon joining the armed forces many benefits step forward, but do some of these benefits go too far? Many army recruiters come to schools and always mention the benefits. Transgender veterans or personnel need medications and maybe some surgery which cost quite a sum of money that gets passed to the government to pay (West). The government should not be paying for transition surgery or medications, due to it being the taxpayers money(West). People that are transgender should be able to pay for their own hormones and surgeries because other transgender people not in the military do so(West). In many ways too they could be disqualified for the medications and the surgery before entering the armed forces (Allen). Why should they be given special treatment for being transgender, when someone else is just as qualified and willing is dismissed for depression or some other medical need. The FARC has admitted to making their money from the illegal drug industry. If the Columbian government can somehow intercept the drugs before it leaves the country or intercept the millions of dollars flowing into Columbia from the drug sales, then the FARC would have a difficult time getting the weapons they need to commit these terrorist acts. Armed forces exist to defend the state against real or potential external threats and as a coercive tool to promote and protect national interests abroad (Edmonds, 2006). The core organizing principle for regular armed forces in a traditional way is the defence of the national territory (Dandeker, 1994; Grizold, 1999). Therefore, their traditional function is also deterrence and military attack. Having in mind Bittner's (1970) definition of the police, which defines the police in terms of their capacity to use non–negotiable coercive force in any situation that appears to require the prompt and decisive response, the policing is carried out by several other organisations (constabulary forces), including military (Whetstone, Walsh, Kelling, Parker Banton, & Brodeur, 2016). Enloe (1990) dealt with the differences between the traditional characteristics of the police and the armed forces. She described the main traditional characteristics of the police as follows: the police usually do not perform their duties in other countries; they have personnel located throughout the national territory; the police operate in relatively small units; the police are under the authority of civilian officials (local governments or ministries of ... • 75. The United States Armed Forces Essay There are currently 2,204,836 people serving in the United States Armed Forces. Females currently make up 16.2% of those currently serving equating to 358,156 this number includes both enlisted, reserve, and the officer corps. While the Armed Forces has downsized, the percentage of females serving has increased with females now making up 17.8% of all active duty personnel and roughly thirty–nine thousand serving as active duty officers. With the increasing diversity of the military, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter officially opened all positions to females on 03–JAN–2016, in a move to better strengthen the Armed Forces. (Demographics, 2013) In 1981, the Supreme Court of the United States(SCOTUS) ruled on Rostker v. Goldberg that stated, women would not be required to register for the Selective Service System(SSS) because they are not able to serve in direct combat roles in any branch of the Armed Forces.(Rostker v. Goldberg) While females have gone to war and been on the front lines, they have always been there indirectly. Until the announcement by Secretary Carter on 03–DEC–2015 females were not allowed to directly serve in combat units, or special operations. This change in policy by the United States Armed Forces means there is precedence set by Rostker v. Goldberg in the case of females having to register for the SSS. The SSS currently registers all males between the ages of eighteen to twenty–five, in the occurrence that the draft is reenacted. Females, now have the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Lifestyle Declaration in the Armed Services In 1993 President Bill Clinton signed a law that set the policy of "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue, and don't harass" when dealing with homosexuals serving in the Armed Services. The policy was a compromise to allow homosexuals to legally serve in the military as long as they did not declare their lifestyle or engage in conduct that was in violation of military good order and discipline. Supporters viewed the law as a step forward in achieving equal rights for homosexuals. Opponents remained concerned that the policy could jeopardize morale and unit effectiveness. "The Joint Chiefs, including the chairman, had all came out against the president on gays serving in the military" (Gates 440). Over time the military was able to adapt to the new policy and restore force readiness. In 2010 the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was repealed and homosexuals were given the opportunity to openly serve in the military. The Joint Chiefs once again objected and questioned the timing of the change. Many believe the repeal was politically motivated and a bad idea that would add additional disruption to an already strained fighting force. Every new service member must go through Basic Training for up to 12 weeks depending on the branch of service. The purpose of Basic Training is to indoctrinate the new service member into the ways of military life. New service members are taught to work as a group and set aside their individual thoughts and ideas. Strict obedience to military standards ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
