Many parents monitor what their child is reading. When something is brought home that they don't

done most of the research however there's one book that has specific information that you need, and
you can only find it in that particular book. You've looked on the online database and find out that
the book is in your universities library. You go to the library and ask for some help finding the book

The freedom to read and write freely is fundamentally American. It allows citizens to express
themselves without fearing repercussions from the government, or fellow citizens. It allows readers
to read freely and make their own decisions. Book banning would create a narrow minded
population, who don't know how to reason for themselves.
Thinking again of the argument of preserving family values, it must be taken into consideration the
kind of television that is currently airing. In many ways TV is more graphic, and explicit. Yet it is
tolerated, whereas even just crude language is apparently cause enough to ban a book.
Parents are also worried about when their children who are reading above grade level are assigned
books intended for students three to four grades above them. This can expose younger readers to

There could be multiple reasons why certain books are banned.Some of the reasons may include
profanity, racism, sexual content, etc. It is obvious that a book like Fifty Shades of Grey is not
allowed in school, but there are parents out there who will ban books such as The Great Gatsby,

Chris, which is Corrine's half uncle. The sexual intercourse contents between the daughter, Cathy,

From 2000–2009 Harry Potter was the most challenged book. For children's books, Captain
Underpants was the most challenged title. An Oklahoma teacher in 1960 was fired for using the
book Catcher in the Rye. Challenges within school libraries and libraries are the majority of book
banning (Reasons 1). Walter Dean Myers was born on August 12, 1973 in Martinsburg West
Virginia (Myers 1). Myers was two when his mother died and was given to Florence and Herbert
Dean. Myers was raised in Harlem by Herbert who was an African–America who loved him like his
own. Florence was a German and Native American who raised Myers like her own. Myers
childhood consisted on his neighborhood and church. (Myers 1). Myers had a speech impediment
and did not take lightly to kids teasing him (Myers 1). Myers real name was Walter Milton Myers,
but due to his mother's death, it was changed. Myers was smart like most kids but didn't do well in
school due to his speech impediment. Myers found comfort in books, and Florence would read to
him at a very young age and Myers enjoy it. Myers would watch her fingers move across the pages,

Many famous works by many famous artists have been repeatedly challenged. The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most frequently challenged books of all time. Many
schools and towns have banned this book from their libraries, saying it "perpetuates racism." Call of
the Wild by Jack London has been repeatedly fought against because it is thought of as inappropriate

Parents don't like their kids reading anything "inappropriate" or "too old for them" so they take their
problems to the school board or the city to get the books banned. Religious groups don't want people
in their religion reading books that go against them. In Board of Education, Island Trees School
District V. Pico in 1982, the U.S. Supreme Court stated "Local school boards may not remove books
from school library shelves simply because they dislike the ideas contained in those books...".
Schools cannot just remove their books from their libraries. First, and inquiry must be made about
the motivation and intent of whoever is pushing for a removal. The intention of keeping students
from certain ideas in a particular work is against the first amendment. Although, if complaints are
made about a book, the school might choose to just quietly remove it instead of making a big deal
out of it. Most incidents only happen at a local level. It's hard to successfully pull off a book banning
