2. Masthead
● I chose to call my magazine Haus due to the fact my USP is about finding out newest music trends. The
title “Haus” is appropriate as it links to the “house music genre” and my magazine being a “music haven”.
It has a double meaning which encourages my audience to purchase the magazine as they feel like
they're part of a community (Links to Janice Winship's theory of a community) as they know both
meanings of the magazine. My magazine will have various stories and interviews regarding newest
music trends and news making the readers feel informed. By having a snappy one world title such as
magazines Clash, Vibe and Blender, My magazine fits the convention that I noticed in my research. My
masthead relates to that of Uncut and Blender due to the style and colour scheme I used which fits the
music magazine conventions. I decided to keep my colour scheme at no more than 3 colours as this was
a convention I came across when researching music magazine. I kept my masthead simple by not using
a jarring font or texture. This was done to make it appear more professional and memorable for the
reader. I previously brain-stormed other names for the magazine which can be seen on the opposing
sides of this slide, yet I went for the name Haus (more detail on prezi) When I was designing my title I
kept it clean cut and one colour to emulate NME and Q. I used a drop shadow effect inspired by uncut to
make the title more pronounced. I positioned the masthead across the toop of the front cover similar to
uncut making it stand out easier. I placed the masthead behind the image indicating that it is well known.
This is because I envision my magazine being past it's first issue. The model slightly covers the
masthead however due to it being a recognise brand readers know what it says like Vibe. I feel my
masthead conorms to the conventions of music magazines due to the same stye and layout.
3. Mise-en- scene of my images
● Images are the main things that an audience looks at it as it prompts them to purchase the
product based on the ideologies shown. The costume/clothes I chose for my models were black
jeans, black jumpers/sweater, legging,boot/converses as well as jewellery and headphones.
This was done to reflect my young adult target audience as they prefer casual clothing such as
jeans and leggings. The repetition of black clothing contrasts with the white house style putting
more emphasis on the models. The models are also listening to headphones- which links to the
music genre as the whole. It can also link To Jacque Lacan's theory of ideal self as readers
may want to own their own headphones. I told my models to make serene and friendly facial
expressions this was done to engage the audience. The purple lighting I used reinforces this as
it shows the duo has an eclectic sound and connatates wealth and creativity. It fits in with Carl
Rogers I deal self theory as readers want to be a s successful and happy as them.
● I decided to use a medium shot to capture both a close up of the models faces but also their
clothings as well. This was done to show readers the style and genre of the music easily
through the use of headphones as props. This also fits music magazines conventions as I
noticed many music magazines used medium shots or medium close up shots on the front
cover.
●
4. Mise-en- scene of my images
● I used some lighting effects to change the colour and contrast on the photos that I used for my
contents page, this was because I wanted them to stand out but not detract a lot of attention
from my text. The props I used such as headphones were very helpful as they allowed me to
have a recurring motif throughout my front cover, double page spread and contents page. I also
used the same model for each pages in order to keep continuity for the reader. In order to fit the
magazine conventions I decided to use medium or close up shots.
● For my double page spread I decided to use a wide shot to show both models enjoying music
and also the table they were sitting on. This is very similar to some of the magazines I looked at
such as NME and Vibe. I thought that this would give the reader an insight into how the Duo
worked together music wise and also show off their personality. I also used a secondary over
the text and through photo manipulation changed the opacity so it look faded. This was done to
emphasise the text more but still make the secondary image visible. I changed the lighting and
shadows on the primary image to put more focus on the duo and also the headphones to show
that they are a musical duo
●
5. Models
● I wanted my magazine to look professional and believable so I used the same two models on
my front cover, double page spread and contents page. I think the two models were very fitting
for the role of an upcoming musical duo who are also quote mysterious. As previously
mentioned in the mise-en-scene, the costume and lighting I chose were vital in making the
models look relatable to the readers yet also looking professional fitting in with music
magazines convention. The models were aged between 16 and 17 years old fitting in with my
target audience, it also made the magazine headline more believable as thel looked ike young
adult artists.
● Looking at other magazines such as Vibe the models often have a variety of facial expressions
that fit with either the theme of the magazine or a particular headline. I wanted my models to
have a calm yet friendly expression t reflect the tonality of the magazine.
6. Font and House Style
● I wanted to choose a font that would be readable for the audience and quite simple in order to
create a strong brand identity. Magazines such as Q primarily used fonts such as Times New
Roman as they have a more formal and older audience. However since my target audience
skews a lot younger I wanted more font to look more opening and conversational. I decided to
use the font Bebas as it looked conversational therefore it would grab my reader's focus. The
block lettering looked confident and aesthetically pleasing. I chose this as my staple font for my
contents page, double page spread and front cover because most magazines I researched used
the same font for throughout their publications. I chose to adhere to this convention to make my
magazine appear more consistent and also cohesive which keeps the reader's attention.
