Contestants In Survivor Psychology
The television show Survivor focuses on a group of strangers in an isolated location, where they
compete in challenges for rewards and immunity from being eliminated, as well as having to
provide shelter, food, and fire for themselves. The winner is decided by a vote from the eliminated
contestants, also known as the jury. Contestants are voted off at tribal council, but have the chance
to be immune from the vote through immunity challenges. Contestants in Survivor are affected
physically, psychologically, and emotionally by things they can and can't control. For example, they
have no choice in who they are competing against, but they have some control over how much food
they have, depending on things like if they can fish or not. The ... Show more content on

The producers use the disparities in age to create drama and keep their viewers entertained.
In Survivor, the players are constantly under a great amount of stress. The different types of stress
can have a huge impact on how they end up playing the game. For example, "physical stressors,
such as food deprivation, also alter psychological factors such as motivation and irritability, and can
increase impulsive and aggressive behavior" (Gerrig 75). In other words, the toll of physical stress
can lead to more aggressive and more impulsive players as well as affecting the players' moods.
Throughout every episode there is some form of aggression. Wilson found four different types of
aggression and labelled them as, "theft, verbal aggression, minor aggression, and deceit" (9). He
defines each type of aggression, saying,
Theft was defined as taking the property of another person without the owner's consent or
knowledge (e.g., robbery, burglary, and larceny). Verbal aggression was any nonphysical act that
places another under duress with the intention to pressure, constrain, or persuade in a noxious
manner (e.g., extortion, coercion, threats, abridgment of privacy, and harassment). Verbal aggression
was any hostile remark meant to diminish another's self–image or cause psychological harm. Minor
aggression was any physical aggression resulting in minor harm or no harm to another, including
acts like slapping, punching, and kicking. Deceit was purposely misleading another

Life of Pi
In the beginning of Life of Pi, the author opens up with a detailed description of the sloth, the
different types, the speed, and the wittiness. It survives by being slow and because of its slowness; it
allows algae to grow on its body that acts like a camouflage with the surrounding moss and foliage.
The book starts out in first person with the main character, Piscine Patel, talking about his name
which means "pool" in numerous languages. He found it weird that his parents named him Piscine
but neither of them ever took to the water. It was Pi's uncle, Mamaji, who was the enthusiast of
water. Mamaji had taught Pi how to swim. "I lay on the bench and fluttered my legs and scratched

Along with the other supplies Pi found in the storage cabin were 10 orange whistles which he
realized could be used as training devices to keep himself on top of the food chain and Richard
Parker on the bottom instead of the other way around. Pi seemed to be less confident and beginning
to doubt his chance of survival. Many times he contemplated jumping overboard or ways to get
Richard Parker off of the boat. Pi knew he had to do something to get off of the boat to stay away
from Richard Parker if he ever did attack so he decided to build a raft. He used four buoyant oars,
lifejackets, and buoyant ropes to put together this raft and he stayed on this raft for several days.
This book teaches you a lot of things you might not expect in a novel.
In the novel are many facts from the survival guide that was on the boat such as what to eat, how to
catch fish and turtles, green water is shallower than blue water, and interact with people or inanimate
objects to keep from going crazy. This book now has a double message. No longer is it just an
entertaining novel but it is now a survival guide. Pi now knew that his best chance of survival was
being seen by another boat or finding land and civilization. He concentrated now on Richard Parker
and ways to make the boat go faster. He realized that the raft was acting like an anchor because the
boat's broadside was facing the waves instead of the hull. This came as an upset to

This video was about Ernest Shackleton expedition to Antarctica in 1914. This expedition was
supposed to be first to cross continent with their Trans continent boat Endurance. Shackleton chose

surgeons and photographer. His expedition failed to cross the continent, because his boat got trapped
in thick pack ice, and man were forced to abandon ship and continue expedition on foot and smaller

History And Culture Of The Cook Islands
History of Culture
The history behind the culture of the Cook Islands came from the various sources of ancient
migration, and early land settlement. The islands got its name from a British man named Captain
James Cook. He landed on the island in 1773. It was in the 19th century is when missionaries started
to come to the islands. They brought with them many sicknesses as well as churches and schools to
share the gospel. Through this, the island's dominate religion is Christianity.
In the Cook Islands culture, "all the islands employed a chiefly system based on traditional legends
of migration and settlement" (Cook Islands: Art and Culture). Born to power as chiefs and
inheritors, Polynesian culture before Europe's involvement, falls nothing short to that in comparison
to Greece's heroic period. Like Homer's concept in early 1200 BC, islanders adopted a similar and
identical concept of belief known as, "Mana", or power. This concept consisted of: connection,
feasting, dancing, offerings of food, attitudes toward females, and the absence of individualism
(Cook Islands: Art and Culture).
Cook Islands culture is based on family and celebration. Since the Cook Islands are made up of
many smaller islands, it is relevant that Cook Islanders choose to identify first with their individual
island and secondarily with the country as an entirety.
Uniqueness of the Culture
Differing from other regions and their cultures, Polynesian culture is unique due to having their own

exactly 20 minutes after we struck. Neither myself nor anyone else saved any of our ef–fects. I also

Life Of Pi Survival Essay
Life of Pi Imagine being on a lifeboat in the middle of the sea, tired and hungry– and with a 450
pound tiger onboard. For Piscine Patel, the main character of Yann Martel's Life of Pi, it's not just
about survival. It's about the will to survive. I read this book because I enjoy reading adventure
books. I feel like I take things for granted, whereas other people around the world struggle much
more than I know. The theme of survival is key to this story. Piscine Patel's story, though fictional,
shows an example of what some people in life threatening circumstances go through. The entire
experience for Pi is devastating, but he perseveres through it all, and survives. Piscine has traits of a
survivor. He has knowledge, is a quick thinker, can hunt, and protects himself from nature and
animal conflicts. According to Robert Richardson, a survivalist is an expert at improvisation, like Pi.
When the lifeboat runs out of water, he is forced to find another option. He hunts for sea turtles,
using their shells as umbrellas, and obtaining drinkable blood. Pi always finds every possible use of
anything he comes across. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pi finds himself on a shipwreck in the middle of the ocean. Physical survival is essential, but mental
and spiritual survival are just as important. Pi does what he has to in order to stay alive, sometimes
at the expense of his health. He boards a lifeboat with a tiger, a hyena, an orangutan, and a zebra. As
days pass, all are killed except for the tiger, who is called Richard Parker, and Pi. The hyena kills the
zebra and the orangutan, then the tiger kills the hyena. To stay alive, Pi has to build a raft to avoid
conflict with the animals. This is a lesson he learned when he was a young boy: staying

Conch In Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Essay
Dylan Silverstein Mrs. Jackson Period 3 December 1, 2014 Symbolism of the Lord of the Flies
Symbolism is using an object to that is being represented by a symbol. It is a creative way to
describe something important in a story and to make the reader think. It even helps the reader
understand the importance of an object in the story and will help readers get into the book more. In
the story Lord of the Flies, Golding uses a conch, Piggy's glasses, and the scar on the beach to
symbolize important factors in the book. The conch symbolizes democracy on the island. When the
boys hear the noise of the conch they all gather together for an assembly. Like the democracy in the
government the boys were able to say what ideas they had. Once they all said their ideas they would
all choose what ideas they thought would be the most effective in keeping them alive. In the United
States they choose between two people and pick who ever they think will provide more benefits in
their life. Like in the Untied States some people will not like the choice that is made. In the book

Once his glasses break many of the actions made by the rest of the boys are unintelligent and show
the true savages that boys can be with each other. In the book Piggy is like an adult figure that stops
the boys from being such savages. When the boys are attempting to start a fire to cook food and stay
warm, Ralph grabs his glasses and hold them up to the sun and it starts a campfire. Without Piggy's
intelligence the boys would probably have killed each other and if there were only a few boys left
then it would be challenging for the military to find the boys. The military would see all the dead
bodies and think there were no survivors from the plan crash. Once they talked to each other if it
was worth looking for a few people they would probably say no and leave the

Pi Animal Symbolism
Meaning Behind Animal Story/Human Story in Life of Pi Life often presents individuals with
situations that go beyond the literal meaning associated with such events. A person, an object, or
even an action can take upon itself an entirely different idea than what meets the idea. Writers may
employ such symbols to convey various themes in a work. For example, the storyline in The Life of
Pi presents many connections between animals and humans. The animals on the life raft are believed
to be human survivors that Pi had been with. Throughout the novel, there are many signs of
connections between these characters and why each one was assigned to that animal. In developing
such connections between the animals and the humans, the author delves ... Show more content on

One connection is the fact that the Bengal Tiger only makes one kill yet is the most feared animal by
humans (Life of Pi Novels for Students Milne). The Tiger killed the hyena because it killed Orange
Juice. This would make sense in the human version of the story that Pi would only kill once he has
the anger and energy to kill his mother's murderer. The tiger is symbolized as courageous and
ferocious which Pi sees himself both as which is why he chose the Bengal Tiger. The tiger is very
focused on survival such as eating and drinking, Pi has mastered this on his 227 day journey just
like a tiger does in the wild. The tiger also symbolizes Pi's inner animal coming out when his mom
is attacked and is a turning point that shows what he must do to survive (Life of Pi Novels for
Students Milne & Constantakis). Survival is one of the many themes in the Life of Pi showing what
must be done in order to live on the life raft. Pi must do things he never thought he would ever have
to do to continue living. For example he had to kill the cook to protect himself and to avenge his
mother's death. He also must learn that he has to keep his distance from Richard Parker and how to
keep him satisfied so that he will not eat Pi. He also learns to provide food not only for protection
from Richard Parker but also to feed himself so that he can survive on the raft. Another theme that

A fire would be wonderful, a morale booster at the very least, among its other uses. She would have
a way to cook something if she were able to catch it, or ward off any dangerous animals that may be

Life Of Pi : An Unique Hook
Life of Pi begins with an unique hook in its author's note. In the author's note, the fictional author is
struggling to come up with a new book concept. He travels to India for inspiration and this is where
he meets Francis Adirubasamy, or better known as Mamaji in the book. Adirubasamy claims that he
has "a story that will make you believe in God". After he recounts on the story, the author is
determined to meet up with the main character, and he was reeled into the amazing world known as
the Life of Pi. As the author listens into Mr. Patel's adventure, his main objective was to believe in
God and this was obviously completed from a quote in the author's note. "...I agreed with Mr.
Adirubasamy that this was, indeed, a story to make you believe in God."
Piscine Montair Patel was a firm believer in God through Hinduism beliefs. As he begins to grow up
and experience new things, Pi stumbles upon Christianity when visiting a church at age fourteen.
The Father there explains to Pi about the story of Christ to which he listens in with horror. Despite
his negative reaction to the story, Pi grows fascinated with the religion and asks to be become a
Christian. That wasn't all though. At the age of fifteen, he happen to come across a Muslim bread
baker, Mr. Kumar, who intrigued him when Pi saw him do his daily prayers in the midst of the
conversation. This would then lead to his conversion of Islam, along with his Hindus and Christian
beliefs. Even though Pi is satisfied

New Zealand 's Brand And Marketing Campaign Essay
Abstract I chose New Zealand as I would like to go there. "100% Pure New Zealand" has been the
country's brand for a decade and it accurately describes the beauty of the country, which
successfully attracts eco–conscious and adventurous tourists. The mountain formations, volcanoes,
un–spoiled rain forests, and the coastal areas are the primary attractions. Tourism produces $10.3

Characteristics Of A Survivor
"Crack!" A heavy rock shifts to the right as Aron Ralston places his hand directly under it, pinning
his arm to the rock surrounding him and tearing the skin off of his forearm. Ralston tries many
different methods to escape but ultimately is forced to saw off his arm with a small knife. Aron
Ralston, Bethany Hamilton, and Hyeonseo Lee are all extraordinarily brave, persistent and patient
people that made it through difficult and life–endangering situations. Ralston exhibited the
characteristic of a survivor whenever he was stuck in a seemingly hopeless situation, as did Bethany
Hamilton and Hyeonseo Lee. In order to be a survivor, a person needs patience, bravery, and
persistence. One of the most important characteristics of a survivor is patience. Whenever Hyeonseo
Lee was attempting to help her family escape from North Korea, she said "I did everything to get
my family to freedom, and we came so close, but my family was thrown in jail. . . I went back and
forth between the immigration office and the police station, desperately trying to get my family out.
. . I didn't have enough money to bribe or fine anymore. I lost all hope." (Hyeonseo Lee, Ted Talks).
Hyeonseo Lee had the patience to wait for things to get better, and if she wasn't patient and had
given up on her family they most likely wouldn't have been successful with their escape. Lee
continuously went back and forth between places that were holding her family to try to get them out,
and she never gave up for

The Crash Of The Plane Crash
Day 1: I awoke covered in sand with the sun beating down on my face. Looking into the vast ocean
upon me I knew I had survived the plane crash, but how could I have ended up on this mysterious
island? I sat there for a moment trying to piece together what had occurred. It was June 17, 1979 and
I was on a plane heading to Bosnia for a mission trip when the plane encountered engine problems.
There were several loud booms coming from the cockpit when suddenly a huge explosion rips
through the fuselage tearing the aircraft into several pieces. At this point I was sure death was upon
me. Somehow, I managed to survive the plummet into the ocean and swim to a piece of debris
floating in the water. This was the last thing I remember until waking up on the shore. God sure
must have been looking out for me to have survived that crash!
After the shock had set in that I was still alive, it was time to decide what to do to survive on this
island. Not knowing how long I will be here, there are three very important things to locate: food,
water, and shelter. I walked along the shore looking for anything to wash up from the crash. I
stumbled upon a few suitcases filled with clothes and several other items I could use to my disposal.
While searching the shore I found absolutely no sign of life and realized that I was the only survivor
that had made it to land. I then began walking inland to find water and a place to rest for the night. I
could hear the sound of water flowing in the

Survivors : A Survivor : The Challenges Of A Survivor
A survivor is someone who continues to persevere in spite of opposition, hardship, or setbacks. If
someone is a survivor it means they remained alive or barely alive after an event, that can either be
major or minor, in which others have died. Survivors go through many trails and trials, they travel
over beaten paths just to end up getting judged (both metaphorically and mentally). Some qualities
that many survivors have that helped them on their laborious journey are strong family bonds,
motivation & determination, being an independent thinker, a long–life learner, perseverance, and the
use of their resources. Like Donald Evans, he used his resources and his intuition to help save his
family, and his strong family bonds made it easier. Aron Ralston is a great example of a survivor
who was an independent thinker and who was determined. Farah Ahmedi was determined and had
motivation on her expedition. Alex White persevered through his life or death journey, and Chesley
Sullenberger is a long–life learner and because he had that quality he survived a historic event.
Motivation & determination, it's the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular
way, it's the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. Farah is a very determined
girl who was also motivated by her mother. This quality helped Farah survive and escape
Afghanistan. On Farah's venture, she was determined to escape Afghanistan to be with the rest of
her family in Pakistan. Her

Thanksgiving Is A Holiday Of Many Interpretations Essay
It is no secret that Thanksgiving is a holiday of many interpretations. Depending on which interest
group is being asked, this day of observance can be accompanied by negative or positive
connotations. According to its Google definition, Thanksgiving is "an annual national holiday
marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey." Thanksgiving, as
described in textbooks across the country, is a national holiday which came to be in Plymouth,
Massachusetts during the year of 1621. In its prime, Thanksgiving has been described as "a three–
day festival of eating, hunting, and other entertainment in honor of the pilgrims' first successful
harvest," (History). What history textbooks around the world do not tell you is that these are only
miniscule details regarding what the holiday actually commemorates. According to numerous
sources, Thanksgiving has been given a negative reputation for laying the foundation of Native
American suffering. A short film published by WatchCut on Youtube explores fifteen Native

Who Is The Conch Shell In Lord Of The Flies
William Golding presented numerous themes and basic ideas on human nature.
Humans have multiple rules in order to maintain a good society, and not to incite anarchy into
society. All societies crumble into chaos and cannot always be perfect and be balanced all the time.
It was once stated, "every act of construction is an act of destruction" (Pablo Picasso). Historical
evidence proves that society cannot always last as long as they are supposed to. Golding uses the
historical precedent to show that specific things are needed in order for a society to continue. In the
novel, The Lord of The Flies, written by William Golding, the conch shell symbolizes order and
leadership, Piggy's glasses represent intelligence and survival, the fire is a representation of hope.
The purpose of the conch shell is that it is a means of communication within the group and
determines leadership among the boys. Anger and confusion arises in the group, so the boys need to
determine who is the leader of the pack when one the boys find the conch shell. The boy shouted, ''
Him with the shell. '' Ralph! Ralph!'' (Golding). This shows that when Ralph had the shell in his
hands, the group looked into awe as they discovered the profoundly new power of the conch shell.

Captain James Cook Essay
Captain James Cook was an English seaman who lived in the eighteenth century. He was one of the
world's greatest explorers. Between 1768 and l779, he made three great voyages of exploration to
the Pacific Ocean. The purpose of these voyages was to get information about lands already known
and to discover new lands.
Captain Cook's first voyage began in August of 1768. On this voyage, he had only one ship with a
crew of 94 seamen. He sailed south from England across the Atlantic Ocean and around the tip of
South America. Then, he sailed west into the Pacific Ocean. Eventually, he discovered the large
islands of New Zealand and drew maps of their coasts. Then, he continued west until he came to the
east coast of Australia. He found this coast to be fertile, a fact which was not known in Europe at
that time. He returned to England in July of 1771.

Yann Martel’s Life of Pi
Pi Patel in Yann Martel's Life of Pi is a young Indian boy who is put through a tremendous traumatic
experience; he gets lost at sea! Not only does he lose all his family, but he is forced to survive 227
days at sea with very limited resources. This ordeal causes great psychological pressure on Pi and
causes his mind to find ways to cope with all the stress. When asked to describe what happened, Pi
tells two stories: one with him surviving with animals including an adult Bengal tiger named
Richard Parker, and a parallel story with humans in which Pi is forced to bend morality. Pi's story of
his survival with Richard Parker is a fiction that he creates to cope with a reality that is too difficult
to face. Undoubtedly, Pi's story with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pi is at sea for 227 days. Surviving that long alone is nothing short of a miracle. Another thing is that
in Pi's second story, Pi states the tragic events that he is put through. For example, he watched his
mother get murdered, he killed the cook, and he was forced to resort to cannibalism. Pi says, "I
descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible" (197). This shows his particular struggle
with keeping to his vegetarian way and how much it hurt him that he had to break his vegetarian
ways to survive. All these show why he would want to suppress this experience with a story filled
with animals. Additionally, late in his journey Pi says, "It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I
was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to God" (283–284). This shows how
religiously connected he was throughout his journey. In addition, it shows how Pi could have
created the Richard Parker story to align it with a miracle filled story that was created to show belief
in religion can save you. Pi's story's main purpose may be to make the listener believe in god and
attribute his survival to such higher power. Pi's specific reason for creating the Richard Parker story
is unclear, but there is no doubt a multitude of reasons that would justify why Pi would want to
create the Richard Parker story. Unquestionably, both stories have extreme parallelism that

Human Nature In Yann Martel's Life Of Pi
To simply be alive consists of the acts of breathing and having blood pump through the body, but to
be a human being consists of much more complexity. The nature composed of a human being
involves having self sovereignty on our own emotions, opinions, desires, faiths as well as having a
moral subconscious. Yet, what occurs when a situation allows an individual to react in a behaviour
that doesn't follow these defining factors of human nature? In Yann Martel 's Life of Pi, he creates
the conflict of a cargo ship sinking, and the only notable survivors on the life raft consists of a
hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan, and a 16–year–old Indian boy. The protagonist of
the novel, Pi Patel, is faced with a personal survival conflict ... Show more content on

When we are placed in situations of desperation, we often resort to other motives that we would
normally categorize as inhumane in order to survive:"When your own life is threatened, your sense
of empathy is blunted by a terrible, selfish hunger for survival," (133). This becomes apparent to Pi
when he does not feel any sympathy towards the zebra, after the ruthless attack from the hyena. Pi
has trouble coping with this behaviour as it is going against values that defines him as a person:
religion and his moral obligations. This willpower to survive often blocks our sense of empathy for
one another and controls our mind and our hearts. Later in the chapter, the hyena has an opportunity
to attack the orangutan, but does not. This relates to the idea that theses two opposites of moral and
survival instincts can co exist together, such as the rhino and the goat. Ultimately, the symbolism of
the two opposite natures coexisting with one another proves that nature is filled with surprises and
the need for balance of cooperation and competition is essential to survive.
The way Pi acts throughout his journey suggests that having faith is one of the most important
practises to learn as it can give an individual hope. Pi has a strong connection to all his practising
faiths: Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. Society is set to have many unspoken rules that we must
abide by to

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Yann Martel’s Life of Pi
There comes a time in point of life when you're stuck in a hiccup and you have to do whatever it

five levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs to be able to survive. Maslow's hierarchy of needs
consists of five levels such as: Physiological, Safety, Love, Esteem, and Self Actualization. Does Pi
have what it takes to overcome these obstacles by using the five levels of hierarchy? Life of Pi by

Pi starts to tame Richard Parker he can finally call him a friend and now has a purpose. As a Hindu,
Pi does not eat meat but that went out of the window when he catches a fish and eats it raw to stay
alive. When it comes down to survival there is no preference in what to eat. As Pi reaches the second
level of the hierarchy of needs, he finds himself on the level of safety he needs to figure out how to
stay safe while on the life boat. While Pi was on the boat he was so scared of Richard Parker that he
had jumped off the boat to go in the water, but then realizes that there are predators just as scary as
Richard parker or maybe even worse that he has to avoid to staying safe. "I noticed the presence of
sharks around the life boat...The sharks were makos–swift, point–snouted predators with long
murderous teeth that protruded noticeable from their mouths" (Martel 179). Once Pi tries to

Since then the Cook Island people migrated to New Zealand. Hukarere Girls Collage based in

Slavery can be traced back to the original written records 11,000 years ago during the Neolithic

The Polynesian natives have decided to abandon their traditional diet for a more appealing and

A few health professionals argue that it is the lack of nutrition education that plays a main role in the
shift to such an unhealthy diet. However, Polynesian health care professionals have to disagree as
they mention that nutrition education is included in the school curriculum but it is the challenge of
converting education to behaviors. Children are being taught about how to ear properly and what are
healthy items they can choose to eat however, when they go to lunch junk food sold because the
schools know they will make a profit off the sales (World Health Organization, 2010). There are
very minimal regulations on food products in Polynesia. While people may be educated about
healthy items when it comes time to pick out foods they have another barrier as food labels vary in
language depending on where they are imported from. Majority of the Polynesian island
communities speak English or Maori. With the majority of the imported foods coming from
countries such as Malaysia, China and the Philippines, a mass amount of the food labels are not in
English or Maori making it difficult or almost impossible for people to read the nutrition content.

How Media And Advertising Play A Negative Effect Of Racial...
Media and advertising play a significant role in the persistence of racial and ethnic divisions,
specifically concerning reality TV. Racial stereotyping is a common problem in today's society in
regards to reality TV, and plays a bigger part in the media than we often realize. Stereotyping
individuals can be a very misleading and dangerous thing to do. It causes unnecessary drama among
the contestants on shows such as America's Next Top Model, Big Brother and Survivor, and gives
the public a false image of what these people are actually like. Through the analysis of the reality
television show Survivor: Cook Islands, contestant stereotypes can be seen as portrayed in a
negative light to the public, as shown by the way these people interact socially with each other, and
how their level of competence on the show compares to people of other races. It is important to,
first, clarify what a stereotype is. In a sense, stereotyping is a way to identify groups by putting a
label on certain ethnic divisions as a whole. "Group identification may be based on such factors as
race, ethnicity, socio–economic status, age, physical challenge, gender identity, occupation,
education, and so on," (Lee et al., 65 ). According to the journal article Activating Racial
Stereotypes on Survivor, this is what the definition of a stereotype embodies. It is the preconceived
judgement of an individual for qualities they have little to no control over. Stereotyping is very

How Did James Cook Influence History
James Cook: Discovery or Invasion
Justin
Grade 6
What is James Cook’s influence and prominence to history? James Cook is a controversial figure
who “discovered Australia” Born on October 27, 1728, in Matron–in–Cleveland, Yorkshire,
England, James Cook was a naval captain, navigator and explorer who, in 1770, discovered and
charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia on his ship Endeavor. He is credited
for many innovations in Cartography. But is he really as good as he seems. And why does he have
such an influence on our society. Why is the true history of Australia being covered up? Why does
history treat Captain Cook so kindly, despite the fact that in his later years he was an extraordinarily
irritable man who, over the most trivial matters, did not hesitate to flog crewmembers or burn down
entire native villages? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

were sailing along the coastline of west Australia a couple of hundred years before James Cook was
born, and of course Abel Tasman sailed along the south of Australia (then called New Holland) and

Captain Cook 's Exploration Of Exploration And Discovery
Captain James Cook added exponential territories to Britain's colonial possessions during his three
voyages. Cook's exploration of the Pacific Ocean contributed to Britain's huge territorial gains,
increased wealth, and influenced Europe's romantic fascination with the science of mapping,
charting and classifying the world. Cook was a supremely gifted surveyor and star navigator. His
discoveries and the accurate cartographic depiction of them, were of incomparable benefit to his
contemporaries. Captain Cook made three exemplary voyages of exploration and discovery. These
voyages brought unimaginable new views of scientific, geographic, and cultural knowledge to a
modernizing European world on the verge of the Enlightenment. Although Cook himself was not
steeped in this intellectual movement, which was gradually moving away from the traditions of
received opinions and Christian thoughts, the results of his Pacific voyages made major
contributions to the scientific and cultural knowledge that led to the enlightenment of his colleagues
and philosophers. Cook's explorations and 'discoveries' were indeed new to the Western world, but
to the Pacific islanders they had been known for thousands of years. The knowledge Cook provided
to his contemporaries in turn, was used to justify colonisation of the 'discovered' lands. This essay
will present two arguments. The first argument will demonstrate how the voyages of Captain James
Cook added to the colonial possessions of the British

Ruiz and Montes packed their cargo and slaves on board the schooner Amistad and set sail for their
plantation at Port Principe, Cuba. It should have been smooth sailing. Just a few days out to sea, on
July 2, one of the Africans used simple sign language to ask the Spanish cook what lay in store for
the captured slaves on board. The cook jokingly replied in sign language that the Africans would be

Sengbe Pieh, later known as Cinqué(SEEN–Kay)broke out of his chains (Kromer). There is some

began working to unchain the others. Soon the Africans found some sugar cane knives, the kind with

tried to trick the Africans. The ship's navigator, Don Pedro Montez, deceived them about which

parents and religious leaders. The three religions he decides to put his faith in are Christianity,
Hindu, and Islam. When his family decides to board a ship to Canada, the trip seems to be going
well until the storm. The ship sinks leaving Pi as the only survivor, or so he thinks. He realizes he is
on a lifeboat with an injured zebra until he helps a Royal Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, on board, a
decision he quickly regrets. There is also a hyena and an orangutan named Orange Juice. This book
tells the journey, the Life of Pi. Throughout the story there are simple things that mean more. They
hide in the pages as words when they really are busting at the seams with a deeper meaning. There
are multiple themes in the story such as the will to survive and religion is important. Life of Pi uses
symbolism through Richard Parker, the algae island, and the color orange. Richard Parker seems to
be just a tiger on board a lifeboat. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was the color of many important things to Pi. Pi "noticed an orange whistle dangling from the life
jacket" (105). The whistle was one of the most important things to Pi. He used the whistle to train
Richard Parker, who was also orange. If Pi was not able to train Richard Parker, he would die.
Luckily, he did train Richard Parker which was key to survival. The tarpaulin was also orange. "The
bright orange tarpaulin was held down by a strong nylon rope..." (106). The tarpaulin helped
separate territories on the lifeboat. It also was safety for Richard Parker. Orange Juice was orange as
well. She was like a motherly figure for Pi. She was calm and reserved unlike the other animals. Pi
liked that about her. The color orange goes with the theme that survival is key, but it also ties in with

What Are The Similarities Between Lord Of The Flies And...
The Odds of Survival
"May the odds be ever in your favor." In other words you will need luck in order to survive the
battle you are going to enter. Lord of the Flies is a classic literature book published in 1954 by
William Golding, a British author. This book is about a group of boys stranded on an island during
WWII and they turned into savages in order for survival. The Hunger Games is a pop culture
literature book published in 2008 as well as a movie released in 2012, which written by Suzanne
Collins. The Hunger Games is about a dystopian society where oppressed people live in factions
based on their wealth; as well as having children chosen to fight to kill one another as a punishment
to the people for the rebellion. Many people may not compare these two books but there are lots of
things similar in each book. Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games have many similar aspects
such as like settings, character behaviors, and the ways of survival.
In the book Lord of the Flies and the book The Hunger Games, the settings are very closely related
even though some people may not compare them to each other. In Lord of the Flies, Jack's tribe
found a little neck on the island and named it the castle, and this is where he and his tribe hid out
during their time on the island. The castle was filled with a bunch traps to help keep them safe, and
one of the traps consisted of the boys having a rock on the lever and releasing it when the wrong
people tried to enter the castle. In

Contestants In Survivor Psychology

  • 1. Contestants In Survivor Psychology The television show Survivor focuses on a group of strangers in an isolated location, where they compete in challenges for rewards and immunity from being eliminated, as well as having to provide shelter, food, and fire for themselves. The winner is decided by a vote from the eliminated contestants, also known as the jury. Contestants are voted off at tribal council, but have the chance to be immune from the vote through immunity challenges. Contestants in Survivor are affected physically, psychologically, and emotionally by things they can and can't control. For example, they have no choice in who they are competing against, but they have some control over how much food they have, depending on things like if they can fish or not. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The producers use the disparities in age to create drama and keep their viewers entertained. In Survivor, the players are constantly under a great amount of stress. The different types of stress can have a huge impact on how they end up playing the game. For example, "physical stressors, such as food deprivation, also alter psychological factors such as motivation and irritability, and can increase impulsive and aggressive behavior" (Gerrig 75). In other words, the toll of physical stress can lead to more aggressive and more impulsive players as well as affecting the players' moods. Throughout every episode there is some form of aggression. Wilson found four different types of aggression and labelled them as, "theft, verbal aggression, minor aggression, and deceit" (9). He defines each type of aggression, saying, Theft was defined as taking the property of another person without the owner's consent or knowledge (e.g., robbery, burglary, and larceny). Verbal aggression was any nonphysical act that places another under duress with the intention to pressure, constrain, or persuade in a noxious manner (e.g., extortion, coercion, threats, abridgment of privacy, and harassment). Verbal aggression was any hostile remark meant to diminish another's self–image or cause psychological harm. Minor aggression was any physical aggression resulting in minor harm or no harm to another, including acts like slapping, punching, and kicking. Deceit was purposely misleading another ... • 3. Life of Pi In the beginning of Life of Pi, the author opens up with a detailed description of the sloth, the different types, the speed, and the wittiness. It survives by being slow and because of its slowness; it allows algae to grow on its body that acts like a camouflage with the surrounding moss and foliage. The book starts out in first person with the main character, Piscine Patel, talking about his name which means "pool" in numerous languages. He found it weird that his parents named him Piscine but neither of them ever took to the water. It was Pi's uncle, Mamaji, who was the enthusiast of water. Mamaji had taught Pi how to swim. "I lay on the bench and fluttered my legs and scratched away at the sand with my hands, turning my head at every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with the other supplies Pi found in the storage cabin were 10 orange whistles which he realized could be used as training devices to keep himself on top of the food chain and Richard Parker on the bottom instead of the other way around. Pi seemed to be less confident and beginning to doubt his chance of survival. Many times he contemplated jumping overboard or ways to get Richard Parker off of the boat. Pi knew he had to do something to get off of the boat to stay away from Richard Parker if he ever did attack so he decided to build a raft. He used four buoyant oars, lifejackets, and buoyant ropes to put together this raft and he stayed on this raft for several days. This book teaches you a lot of things you might not expect in a novel. In the novel are many facts from the survival guide that was on the boat such as what to eat, how to catch fish and turtles, green water is shallower than blue water, and interact with people or inanimate objects to keep from going crazy. This book now has a double message. No longer is it just an entertaining novel but it is now a survival guide. Pi now knew that his best chance of survival was being seen by another boat or finding land and civilization. He concentrated now on Richard Parker and ways to make the boat go faster. He realized that the raft was acting like an anchor because the boat's broadside was facing the waves instead of the hull. This came as an upset to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. History And Culture Of The Cook Islands History of Culture The history behind the culture of the Cook Islands came from the various sources of ancient migration, and early land settlement. The islands got its name from a British man named Captain James Cook. He landed on the island in 1773. It was in the 19th century is when missionaries started to come to the islands. They brought with them many sicknesses as well as churches and schools to share the gospel. Through this, the island's dominate religion is Christianity. In the Cook Islands culture, "all the islands employed a chiefly system based on traditional legends of migration and settlement" (Cook Islands: Art and Culture). Born to power as chiefs and inheritors, Polynesian culture before Europe's involvement, falls nothing short to that in comparison to Greece's heroic period. Like Homer's concept in early 1200 BC, islanders adopted a similar and identical concept of belief known as, "Mana", or power. This concept consisted of: connection, feasting, dancing, offerings of food, attitudes toward females, and the absence of individualism (Cook Islands: Art and Culture). Cook Islands culture is based on family and celebration. Since the Cook Islands are made up of many smaller islands, it is relevant that Cook Islanders choose to identify first with their individual island and secondarily with the country as an entirety. Uniqueness of the Culture Differing from other regions and their cultures, Polynesian culture is unique due to having their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Life Of Pi Survival Essay Life of Pi Imagine being on a lifeboat in the middle of the sea, tired and hungry– and with a 450 pound tiger onboard. For Piscine Patel, the main character of Yann Martel's Life of Pi, it's not just about survival. It's about the will to survive. I read this book because I enjoy reading adventure books. I feel like I take things for granted, whereas other people around the world struggle much more than I know. The theme of survival is key to this story. Piscine Patel's story, though fictional, shows an example of what some people in life threatening circumstances go through. The entire experience for Pi is devastating, but he perseveres through it all, and survives. Piscine has traits of a survivor. He has knowledge, is a quick thinker, can hunt, and protects himself from nature and animal conflicts. According to Robert Richardson, a survivalist is an expert at improvisation, like Pi. When the lifeboat runs out of water, he is forced to find another option. He hunts for sea turtles, using their shells as umbrellas, and obtaining drinkable blood. Pi always finds every possible use of anything he comes across. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pi finds himself on a shipwreck in the middle of the ocean. Conch In Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Essay Dylan Silverstein Mrs. Jackson Period 3 December 1, 2014 Symbolism of the Lord of the Flies Symbolism is using an object to that is being represented by a symbol. It is a creative way to describe something important in a story and to make the reader think. It even helps the reader understand the importance of an object in the story and will help readers get into the book more. In the story Lord of the Flies, Golding uses a conch, Piggy's glasses, and the scar on the beach to symbolize important factors in the book. The conch symbolizes democracy on the island. When the boys hear the noise of the conch they all gather together for an assembly. Like the democracy in the government the boys were able to say what ideas they had. Once they all said their ideas they would all choose what ideas they thought would be the most effective in keeping them alive. In the United States they choose between two people and pick who ever they think will provide more benefits in their life. Like in the Untied States some people will not like the choice that is made. • 17. Pi Animal Symbolism Meaning Behind Animal Story/Human Story in Life of Pi Life often presents individuals with situations that go beyond the literal meaning associated with such events. A person, an object, or even an action can take upon itself an entirely different idea than what meets the idea. Writers may employ such symbols to convey various themes in a work. For example, the storyline in The Life of Pi presents many connections between animals and humans. The animals on the life raft are believed to be human survivors that Pi had been with. Throughout the novel, there are many signs of connections between these characters and why each one was assigned to that animal. In developing such connections between the animals and the humans, the author delves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One connection is the fact that the Bengal Tiger only makes one kill yet is the most feared animal by humans (Life of Pi Novels for Students Milne). The Tiger killed the hyena because it killed Orange Juice. This would make sense in the human version of the story that Pi would only kill once he has the anger and energy to kill his mother's murderer. The tiger is symbolized as courageous and ferocious which Pi sees himself both as which is why he chose the Bengal Tiger. The tiger is very focused on survival such as eating and drinking, Pi has mastered this on his 227 day journey just like a tiger does in the wild. The tiger also symbolizes Pi's inner animal coming out when his mom is attacked and is a turning point that shows what he must do to survive (Life of Pi Novels for Students Milne & Constantakis). Survival is one of the many themes in the Life of Pi showing what must be done in order to live on the life raft. Pi must do things he never thought he would ever have to do to continue living. For example he had to kill the cook to protect himself and to avenge his mother's death. He also must learn that he has to keep his distance from Richard Parker and how to keep him satisfied so that he will not eat Pi. He also learns to provide food not only for protection from Richard Parker but also to feed himself so that he can survive on the raft. Another theme that relates to their ... He travels to India for inspiration and this is where he meets Francis Adirubasamy, or better known as Mamaji in the book. Adirubasamy claims that he has "a story that will make you believe in God". After he recounts on the story, the author is determined to meet up with the main character, and he was reeled into the amazing world known as the Life of Pi. As the author listens into Mr. Patel's adventure, his main objective was to believe in God and this was obviously completed from a quote in the author's note. "...I agreed with Mr. Adirubasamy that this was, indeed, a story to make you believe in God." Piscine Montair Patel was a firm believer in God through Hinduism beliefs. As he begins to grow up and experience new things, Pi stumbles upon Christianity when visiting a church at age fourteen. The Father there explains to Pi about the story of Christ to which he listens in with horror. Despite his negative reaction to the story, Pi grows fascinated with the religion and asks to be become a Christian. That wasn't all though. A heavy rock shifts to the right as Aron Ralston places his hand directly under it, pinning his arm to the rock surrounding him and tearing the skin off of his forearm. Ralston tries many different methods to escape but ultimately is forced to saw off his arm with a small knife. Aron Ralston, Bethany Hamilton, and Hyeonseo Lee are all extraordinarily brave, persistent and patient people that made it through difficult and life–endangering situations. Ralston exhibited the characteristic of a survivor whenever he was stuck in a seemingly hopeless situation, as did Bethany Hamilton and Hyeonseo Lee. In order to be a survivor, a person needs patience, bravery, and persistence. One of the most important characteristics of a survivor is patience. Whenever Hyeonseo Lee was attempting to help her family escape from North Korea, she said "I did everything to get my family to freedom, and we came so close, but my family was thrown in jail. . . I went back and forth between the immigration office and the police station, desperately trying to get my family out. . . I didn't have enough money to bribe or fine anymore. I lost all hope." (Hyeonseo Lee, Ted Talks). Hyeonseo Lee had the patience to wait for things to get better, and if she wasn't patient and had given up on her family they most likely wouldn't have been successful with their escape. Looking into the vast ocean upon me I knew I had survived the plane crash, but how could I have ended up on this mysterious island? I sat there for a moment trying to piece together what had occurred. It was June 17, 1979 and I was on a plane heading to Bosnia for a mission trip when the plane encountered engine problems. There were several loud booms coming from the cockpit when suddenly a huge explosion rips through the fuselage tearing the aircraft into several pieces. At this point I was sure death was upon me. Somehow, I managed to survive the plummet into the ocean and swim to a piece of debris floating in the water. This was the last thing I remember until waking up on the shore. God sure must have been looking out for me to have survived that crash! After the shock had set in that I was still alive, it was time to decide what to do to survive on this island. Not knowing how long I will be here, there are three very important things to locate: food, water, and shelter. I walked along the shore looking for anything to wash up from the crash. I stumbled upon a few suitcases filled with clothes and several other items I could use to my disposal. While searching the shore I found absolutely no sign of life and realized that I was the only survivor that had made it to land. • 29. Survivors : A Survivor : The Challenges Of A Survivor A survivor is someone who continues to persevere in spite of opposition, hardship, or setbacks. If someone is a survivor it means they remained alive or barely alive after an event, that can either be major or minor, in which others have died. Survivors go through many trails and trials, they travel over beaten paths just to end up getting judged (both metaphorically and mentally). Some qualities that many survivors have that helped them on their laborious journey are strong family bonds, motivation & determination, being an independent thinker, a long–life learner, perseverance, and the use of their resources. Like Donald Evans, he used his resources and his intuition to help save his family, and his strong family bonds made it easier. Aron Ralston is a great example of a survivor who was an independent thinker and who was determined. Farah Ahmedi was determined and had motivation on her expedition. Alex White persevered through his life or death journey, and Chesley Sullenberger is a long–life learner and because he had that quality he survived a historic event. Motivation & determination, it's the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way, it's the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. Farah is a very determined girl who was also motivated by her mother. This quality helped Farah survive and escape Afghanistan. Depending on which interest group is being asked, this day of observance can be accompanied by negative or positive connotations. • 35. Who Is The Conch Shell In Lord Of The Flies William Golding presented numerous themes and basic ideas on human nature. Humans have multiple rules in order to maintain a good society, and not to incite anarchy into society. All societies crumble into chaos and cannot always be perfect and be balanced all the time. It was once stated, "every act of construction is an act of destruction" (Pablo Picasso). Historical evidence proves that society cannot always last as long as they are supposed to. Golding uses the historical precedent to show that specific things are needed in order for a society to continue. In the novel, The Lord of The Flies, written by William Golding, the conch shell symbolizes order and leadership, Piggy's glasses represent intelligence and survival, the fire is a representation of hope. The purpose of the conch shell is that it is a means of communication within the group and determines leadership among the boys. Anger and confusion arises in the group, so the boys need to determine who is the leader of the pack when one the boys find the conch shell. The boy shouted, '' Him with the shell. '' Ralph! Ralph!'' Another thing is that in Pi's second story, Pi states the tragic events that he is put through. For example, he watched his mother get murdered, he killed the cook, and he was forced to resort to cannibalism. Pi says, "I descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible" (197). This shows his particular struggle with keeping to his vegetarian way and how much it hurt him that he had to break his vegetarian ways to survive. All these show why he would want to suppress this experience with a story filled with animals. Additionally, late in his journey Pi says, "It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to God" (283–284). This shows how religiously connected he was throughout his journey. In addition, it shows how Pi could have created the Richard Parker story to align it with a miracle filled story that was created to show belief in religion can save you. Pi's story's main purpose may be to make the listener believe in god and attribute his survival to such higher power. The nature composed of a human being involves having self sovereignty on our own emotions, opinions, desires, faiths as well as having a moral subconscious. Yet, what occurs when a situation allows an individual to react in a behaviour that doesn't follow these defining factors of human nature? In Yann Martel 's Life of Pi, he creates the conflict of a cargo ship sinking, and the only notable survivors on the life raft consists of a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan, and a 16–year–old Indian boy. When we are placed in situations of desperation, we often resort to other motives that we would normally categorize as inhumane in order to survive:"When your own life is threatened, your sense of empathy is blunted by a terrible, selfish hunger for survival," (133). This becomes apparent to Pi when he does not feel any sympathy towards the zebra, after the ruthless attack from the hyena. Pi has trouble coping with this behaviour as it is going against values that defines him as a person: religion and his moral obligations. This willpower to survive often blocks our sense of empathy for one another and controls our mind and our hearts. Later in the chapter, the hyena has an opportunity to attack the orangutan, but does not. This relates to the idea that theses two opposites of moral and survival instincts can co exist together, such as the rhino and the goat. Ultimately, the symbolism of the two opposite natures coexisting with one another proves that nature is filled with surprises and the need for balance of cooperation and competition is essential to survive. The way Pi acts throughout his journey suggests that having faith is one of the most important practises to learn as it can give an individual hope. In 1942 the government had then signed an agreement with the New Zealand government to recruit workers from the Cooks during the World war 2, from that agreement, more young woman and men arrived. The Cook Island lost 1,492 people to migration. The Cook Islanders believe in a lot of rituals. Christian values and respect for elders is an important aspect to these people. They believe in good manners and being polite is an outstanding draw to my eyes in the Cook Island culture, they are known for their hospitable and generous hearts. Whether they've learned about it from a chapter of a textbook or an educational film from their history class, or have heard stories of their ancestors passed down from generation to generation, we all have an idea of what slavery is. However, we do not know the basics. For example, when did slavery come into play? How did this manner of treating "uncivilized" people like property become accepted, and what made it suddenly turn into a looked down upon doing? Slavery can be traced back to the original written records 11,000 years ago during the Neolithic Revolution. It grew through Europe's Classic era, middle ages, and the modern era, ... Judge Judson could have ruled in their favor if it wasn't for another pair of sailors, Gedney, and his first mate, Lieutenant Meade whom wanted a reward, for first spotting them off the coast. This inquiry over which the enslaved Africans belongs to introduces the Anglo–American and Latin American perspectives advocating the benefits of slavery. Children are being taught about how to ear properly and what are healthy items they can choose to eat however, when they go to lunch junk food sold because the schools know they will make a profit off the sales (World Health Organization, 2010). • 53. How Media And Advertising Play A Negative Effect Of Racial... Media and advertising play a significant role in the persistence of racial and ethnic divisions, specifically concerning reality TV. Racial stereotyping is a common problem in today's society in regards to reality TV, and plays a bigger part in the media than we often realize. Stereotyping individuals can be a very misleading and dangerous thing to do. It causes unnecessary drama among the contestants on shows such as America's Next Top Model, Big Brother and Survivor, and gives the public a false image of what these people are actually like. Through the analysis of the reality television show Survivor: Cook Islands, contestant stereotypes can be seen as portrayed in a negative light to the public, as shown by the way these people interact socially with each other, and how their level of competence on the show compares to people of other races. It is important to, first, clarify what a stereotype is. In a sense, stereotyping is a way to identify groups by putting a label on certain ethnic divisions as a whole. "Group identification may be based on such factors as race, ethnicity, socio–economic status, age, physical challenge, gender identity, occupation, education, and so on," (Lee et al., 65 ). According to the journal article Activating Racial Stereotypes on Survivor, this is what the definition of a stereotype embodies. It is the preconceived judgement of an individual for qualities they have little to no control over. Stereotyping is very common among people in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. How Did James Cook Influence History James Cook: Discovery or Invasion Justin Grade 6 What is James Cook’s influence and prominence to history? James Cook is a controversial figure who “discovered Australia” Born on October 27, 1728, in Matron–in–Cleveland, Yorkshire, England, James Cook was a naval captain, navigator and explorer who, in 1770, discovered and charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia on his ship Endeavor. He is credited for many innovations in Cartography. But is he really as good as he seems. And why does he have such an influence on our society. Why is the true history of Australia being covered up? Why does history treat Captain Cook so kindly, despite the fact that in his later years he was an extraordinarily irritable man who, over the most trivial matters, did not hesitate to flog crewmembers or burn down entire native villages? ... • 61. Captain Cook 's Exploration Of Exploration And Discovery Captain James Cook added exponential territories to Britain's colonial possessions during his three voyages. Cook's exploration of the Pacific Ocean contributed to Britain's huge territorial gains, increased wealth, and influenced Europe's romantic fascination with the science of mapping, charting and classifying the world. Cook was a supremely gifted surveyor and star navigator. His discoveries and the accurate cartographic depiction of them, were of incomparable benefit to his contemporaries. Captain Cook made three exemplary voyages of exploration and discovery. These voyages brought unimaginable new views of scientific, geographic, and cultural knowledge to a modernizing European world on the verge of the Enlightenment. Although Cook himself was not steeped in this intellectual movement, which was gradually moving away from the traditions of received opinions and Christian thoughts, the results of his Pacific voyages made major contributions to the scientific and cultural knowledge that led to the enlightenment of his colleagues and philosophers. Cook's explorations and 'discoveries' were indeed new to the Western world, but to the Pacific islanders they had been known for thousands of years. The knowledge Cook provided to his contemporaries in turn, was used to justify colonisation of the 'discovered' lands. This essay will present two arguments. Ruiz and Montes packed their cargo and slaves on board the schooner Amistad and set sail for their plantation at Port Principe, Cuba. It should have been smooth sailing. Just a few days out to sea, on July 2, one of the Africans used simple sign language to ask the Spanish cook what lay in store for the captured slaves on board. The cook jokingly replied in sign language that the Africans would be killed and eaten! That night, frightened by the cooks response, one of the the slaves, a man named Sengbe Pieh, later known as Cinqué(SEEN–Kay)broke out of his chains (Kromer). There is some debate, as to the method he used to break out. Some say he used a nail he found to pick the padlocks, while other maintain that he found a file and used it to escape. Either way, he immediately began working to unchain the others. Soon the Africans found some sugar cane knives, the kind with two–foot–long blades, and proceeded to take over of the Amistad. Two Africans and two Spaniards were killed in the mutiny. The African slaves, now in control of the Amistad, demanded that Ruiz and Montes sail east, toward the rising sun, back to their homes in Africa. The crafty Spanish sailors tried to trick the Africans. The ship's navigator, Don Pedro Montez, deceived them about which direction their course was on. During the day, they headed east into the sun.
