Principles & Practice of Diffusion & Osmosis
Store entire experiment at room temperature.
EXPERIMENT OBJECTIVE
The objective of this experiment is to develop an understanding of the molecular basis of diffusion
and osmosis and its physiological importance. Students will analyze how solute size and
concentration affect diffusion across semi–permeable membranes and how these processes affect
water potential. Students will also calculate water potential of plant cells.

OSMOSIS
Osmosis is a special type of diffusion. It is the diffusion of water molecules across a semipermeable
membrane (a membrane that allows for the diffusion of certain solutes and water) from an area of
higher water concentration to one of lower water concentration. For example, if a 1 M aqueous
starch solution is separated from a .5 M aqueous starch solution by a semi–permeable membrane,
then water molecules will move from the .5 M aqueous starch solution (higher water molecule
concentration) toward the more concentrated 1M starch solution (lower water molecule
concentration) until an equilibrium of water molecules exists between the two solutions. Since the
semi–permeable membrane did not allow for the passage of starch molecules, the 1M–starch
solution will gain in volume as the water moves in (Figure 3).

The History of Titile IX
Sex. That one little word has led to a mini–revolution in all aspects of a girl's education, from
Kindergarten to Graduate School, all across the nation. In 1972, Title IX was adopted as the
landmark legislation for prohibition of gender discrimination in schools, and was signed into law, by
President Richard Nixon, on June 23. This legislation encompasses both academics and athletics.
Title IX reads: "No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, or
denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity
receiving federal aid." Since 1972, many attempts have been made to alter the appearance and effect
of Title IX.

Finally, in 1980, when the Department of Education was established, they were given Title IX to
oversee through the Office of Civil Rights. [1] Through all of this, the goal of Title IX has been and
is,
"to ensure that Federal funds are not utilized for and do not support sex–based discrimination, and
that individuals have equal opportunities, without regard to sex, to pursue, engage or participate in,
and benefit from academic, extracurricular, research, occupational training, employment, or other
educational programs or activities." [2]
Despite the 1975 regulations schools and courts still debated whether the language of Title IX itself
included their athletic departments at all. At issue was the Title IX, § 1681(a), phrase dealing with
funding: sex–based discrimination in "any education program or activity receiving Federal financial
assistance violated Title IX." [3] Depending on whether a party was fighting for or against gender
equity compliance under Title IX in the athletics area, that party argued for, respectively, an
"institution–wide" or "program–specific" view of this phrase. Supporters of the latter view argued
that Title IX forbade gender discrimination only in those specific "programs or activities" receiving
direct federal funding. Thus, if an athletic program did not receive any direct federal funding, the
regulations and compliance guidelines of Title IX did not apply to it. As seen in

One of the key components was that now, civil penalties could be assessed for failure to follow
FTC's orders, such as cease and desist orders, should the respondent ignore the order. Previously,
they would just be sanctioned. In addition, the amendment to Section 5 was to include unfair and
deceptive acts or practices. Prior to this passage of the Wheeler–Lea Act, it was the burden of the
FTC to prove unfair methods of competition. The Wheeler–Lea Act expanded on the food and drug
advertising, as well. (Brown, 1947) Over the next few decades, the FTC saw changes, many fleeting
and few with staying power. There were also staffing issues from the 1930s to present. In addition,
at one point in time, when the FTC was tasked with enforcing labeling and identification, especially
within the textiles and furs industry, many felt that the FTC overzealously pursued labeling claims.
FTC also saw other challenges such as scathing reviews by critics consistently accusing the FTC of
falling short. From 1933 through 1935, there were significant turnovers of leadership areas
including the Commissioner's position. Critics would claim that the Commission had become
complacent after the existing board remained in place from 1935 to 1945. (Federal Trade
Commission, 2004) William Brown wrote that "The changes," as a result of the passage of the
Wheeler–Lea Act, "added certain teeth to the law and made

25. The Proposed Regulation of Bureau of Consumer Financial...
Proposed Regulation 1 Proposed Regulation The Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection is
designed to protect consumers from abuse by financial issuers. This proposal would affect every
consumer in regards to opening a credit card account, or even trying to change credit card issuers. If,
for whatever reason, a consumer decides to open a credit card account, this proposal could cause
them to have to pay higher costs just to open an account than what it would currently cost.
Regulation Z currently limits the amount of fees an issuer can charge for a consumer to open a credit
card account to 25% of the credit limit. It currently applies to prior to the current year and the first
year of the open account. The Bureau is proposing to change Regulation Z to only apply to the first
year of the open account and exclude the prior to current year requirement. (Docket ID: CFPB–
2012–0015) This means there would be no limits set on fees charged to actually open the account.
The limitations would only apply to the first year after the account is opened. The public comment
would be: Without limitations being set, it would be an open door for abuse from issuers on
consumers. The setting of limitations allow for fairness in the market place and to protect consumers
from financial abuse in regards to issuers protecting their bottom lines. The limitation on the prior
year would protect the amount the consumers would have to pay for the initial opening of the
account and create a better

in the NCU ProQuest, EBSCOhost databases, and Dissertation resources on organizational barriers
and disconnection. The starting point of the literature review is the theory of quality management
and the subsequent emergence of quality–related standards and regulations. Information sources for
the proposed study included books on quality management theory obtained from the EBSCOHost
database and peer–reviewed articles from the ProQuest database.
Also, the literature search included research articles, private and government websites, and ... Show

The ProQuest keyword advance search for the key words was narrowed by requesting full text, peer
reviewed and scholarly journal articles in the last three years. Furthermore, the search phrases
included variations of the key problem statement words disconnection, misalignment and process
management. The articles returned and chosen were those that included information about
leadership process disconnections, misalignment, and disconnected processes related to quality and
medical devices
The purpose of this qualitative, multiple–case study is to investigate leadership barriers and
organizational process disconnections that have led to the marketing of potentially unsafe medical
devices. Many qualitative studies (e.g., Iden, 2012, Oakland, 2011, Obeidat et al., 2014, Pater, 2013,
Raeesi et, al., 2013, Rising et al. 2012, Seethamraju, 2012, Suckley et al., 2013; Storbacka, 2012,
Talib et al., 2011; Tucker et al., 2013) have been conducted on organizational barriers and
disconnection. However, no studies were located related to the marketing of potentially unsafe
medical devices. In the proposed study, factors that influence or hinder the manufacture of safe and
effective medical devices will be identified and explored.
Medical devices are used to mitigate health issues and to maintain an acceptable quality of life

Serious adverse event reports (encompass death, life–threatening events, hospitalization, disability,
congenital anomalies, and/or required interventions, and disabilities) and recalls related to medical
device are due to failures in the quality systems during the pre–market activities. The number of
adverse event reports has increased dramatically; these post–market issues uncovered the failures in
the quality systems such as design controls and production and process controls that could be a
strong predictor for recall root cause. The number of complexity of medical devices has grown
rapidly. In parallel, the medical device supply chain has become increasingly cost competitive and
globalized. The quality systems that manage the evolving complexity of medical devices together
with multiple layers of thousands of raw material, component, and sub–component suppliers, all of
whom potentially impact final product quality and performance.
There are opportunities for improving quality in medical device industry without increasing quality
cost by identifying the quality barriers. Quality improvements are hindered by challenges within the
industry as well as with regulatory bodies. Medical devices are subject to a high degree of
regulation, quality systems can become a principal of auditing and policing. If product quality is
managed through inspection rather than design, the quality will become reactive. According to

Abstract
The preamble of The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of
Forest Rights) Act, 2006 (hereinafter referred to as the Forest Rights Act or FRA) states that the Act
was passed to undo the "historical injustice" committed against the forest dwelling Scheduled Tribes
and other traditional forest dwellers who have been residing in the forests for centuries, but whose
rights could not be recorded. It becomes imperative to understand the legal institutional structure of
the Indian government to better understand the decision making capabilities in regards to forests in
India. There are so many legalities and so many laws that are in place that it is a complex affair to
understand how law operates. With so many laws passed at different point of time and space it is
tough to really enforce these laws with them contradicting each other. For example according to one
law (Indian Forest Act), the forests fall under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Environment and
Forests, making forests property of the Indian government and in another law (Forest Rights Act),
the nodal agency is Ministry of Tribal Affairs and indigenous people are also considered as a part

35. Nutrition Labeling Essay
Introduction
The increase in the worldwide obesity and diet related chronic diseases over the previous several
decades warrants the need of approaches to combat these disorders. Poor dietary practices, high
energy intake, high intake of fat, saturated fat and cholesterol along with low intake of fiber and low
physical activity are the major risk factors for these disorders. In order to overcome these problems,
the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) of 1990 requires all packaged foods to bear
nutrition labeling and all health claim. This law was intended to provide clearer information to
consumers, and enable them to better compare the nutritional merits of products.1 Palestine is not

"The food label gives consumers the power to compare foods quickly and easily so they can judge
for themselves which products best fit their dietary needs." 7
Therefore, food labels identify a variety of information about a product. These labels provide the
consumer with the needed information and the ability to compare different products to make the best
choice possible to obtain healthy food.
According to many studies and observations, energy content of foods are among the most read
information on food labels by consumers ,or in other words, Calories. Many individuals depend on
counting daily calories to monitor their daily caloric intake, to ensure successful weight loss, gain,

For example, it is up to each State to request federal grant funding through FEMA. If the grant
request is approved by FEMA then a state will get funding in the amount requested or a lower
amount of funding will be dispersed by FEMA to the grant recipient. One of the main policy
alternative involves the Congress and the funding amount to DHS then to FEMA. The current
funding programs under the SAFER grant are not a permeant and long term, by making up a new
funding policy for Congressional to pass in the near future will allow citizens to be safer. (FEMA,

The most recent media coverage regarding the funding problems of the Department of homeland

the democrats fighting each other for control of power. For example, there are supposed to be Values

security and equity regarding every citizen's safety in the United States and to prevent them from
being injured or even death. The DHS department heads find this to be the main causation of the
current funding problem. (Nather and Kim, 2015, p.1) For stakeholders,

49. The Joseph Narrative: Literary Analysis and the Role of God
The Joseph Narrative: Literary Analysis and the Role of God
The Joseph narrative can be found in the book of Genesis chapters 37–50. It is slightly interrupted
"by the story of Judah and Tamar (Gen. 38) and by the so–called Blessing of Jacob (Gen. 49:1–28)"
(Skinner, 438). The story of Joseph is seen as unique because it has different characteristics than its
counterparts in Genesis. Other writings in Genesis seem to be short, brief incidents, about family
and tribal affairs. The Joseph narrative, on the other hand, is lengthy in nature "comprising some 300
verses" (Barton & Muddiman, 60). In fact, Joseph is "second only to Moses in the attention given to
him in the Torah" (Spring & Shapiro, 260). Some scholars consider the Joseph ... Show more

It is important to know that "In antiquity, dreams were thought to be signs from divine powers
exposing their intent" (Plaut, 388). This view toward dreams makes Joseph's gift very valuable.
Throughout the writing we see that "Dreams play an important role and hint at unusual
developments" within the story (Plaut, 360). The dreams come in three different episodes, each
episode contains two dreams. This is one form of repetition that is used with regard to the dreams
(cfr. Humphreys, 97). The first set of dreams occurs at the beginning of the narrative. Joseph has a
dream and he goes to share it with his brothers: "There we were binding sheaves in the field, when
suddenly my sheaf stood up and remained upright; then your sheaves gathered around and bowed
low to my sheaf" (Gen. 37:7). The brothers are extremely disgusted with Joseph and they see his
dream as a purposeful attempt to mock them and show his power over them (cfr. Levenson, 75).
They already do not like him because he is the favorite son, but they hate him even more after his
dream. The second dream which occurs within this episode is similar to the first. This time Joseph
describes the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowing down to him. Joseph's brothers and father take
exception to his dream. From a foreshadowing perspective, the first set of dreams has striking
similarities to what will happen later in the narrative. In the first dream, Joseph talks about
harvesting grain and how the brother's

* Motivators for Customers
The biggest motivator to customers of Brewery Vivant at this time is the ability to provide of good
beer at a competitive price. For those who know it, additional motivators would be the ambiance of
the location, and the food choices they offer, but because this is a lesser known motivator, Brewery
Vivant would like to focus on the promotion of these things.
* Customers' Unmet Needs
Some customers may wish for wine or liquor options; this is something that the owners of Brewery
Vivant are not interested in at this time. Having a specialized focused allows them to have the best
possible products. Also, there are no thrifty options for food which some customers may desire.
Food is selected based on quality and its ability to pair with the beers that are offered; the owners
want to stick with their high standards.
* Purchase decisions
Men typically in their mid–20's on up are the main customers who make the decision to purchase
their product. They do see a big spectrum of ages purchasing their beer. While men are the majority
of customers, women are a growing market and mostly Caucasians. Brewery Vivant's price point
and style tends to attract a more educated consumer. (Kris Spaulding, Brewery Vivant 2013)

Human Resource (HR) management
The design of formal systems in an organization to ensure the effective and efficient use of human
talent to accomplish the organizational goals.
As human resources have become viewed as more critical to organizational success, many
organizations have realized that it is the people in an organization that can provide a competitive
advantage.2 Throughout the book it will be emphasized that the people as human resources
contribute to and affect the competitive success of the organization. Human Resource (HR)
management deals with the design of formal systems in an organization to ensure the effective and
efficient use of human talent to accomplish organizational goals. In an organization, the
management of human resources means that they must be recruited, compensated, trained, and

The Treaty of Lisbon (ToL) was signed by twenty–seven member states (MS) on 13th December
2007 and entered into force on 1st December 2009 ending several years of negotiation about
institutional issues. Below we will look at how the ToL has reformed the European Union (EU). The
changes introduced by the ToL lie predominantly in the areas of constitutional and institutional
reform. However, institutional change is the key driver behind the ToL. We will look at how the ToL
has brought about these changes.
Initially the ToL was named the "Reform Treaty" however as Portugal held presidency at the time
they were keen to attach their name to it hence the reason it was called the Treaty of Lisbon. The
aim of the ToL was to:

By replacing the EC the three pillar structure which was introduced by the Treaty of Maastricht and
which characterised the EC was abolished by the ToL. The three pillars together constituted the EC
however the ToL abolishes the three pillar structure and instead the EU will only be one title. Prior
to the ToL coming into force the EC and the EU had different statutes and did not operate the same
decision–making rules. The ToL will end this dual system and the EU will have its own legal
personality. This will allow the EU to act more effectively, coherently and credibly in its relations
with the rest of the world.
The institutional framework of the EU has been significantly altered. The need for transparency,
better democratic accountability and enhanced judicial scrutiny has led to some important
improvements in the EU's institutional make–up. There are now seven EU institutions which are
listed in Article 13 of the TEU. These are : the European Parliament; the European Council; the
Council; the European Commission; the Court of Justice of the European Union (formerly the ECJ);
the European Central Bank; and the European Court of Auditors.
The European Parliament (EP) is the one that has changed the most over the years. The EP was
originally set up by the Treaty of Rome as the European Assembly. The European Assembly

Business Case
The client is a US–based multinational medical device, pharmaceutical, and consumer packaged
goods manufacturer, founded in 1886. Counting on its 250 subsidiary companies with operations in
60 countries, the company leverages 130 years' of expertise to bring innovative ideas, products, and
services to advance the health and well–being of people across the globe.
In this case, the client identified lapses in data accuracy and consistency while capturing electronic
records from various lab instruments used by its subsidiary companies. Additionally, some
corrective and preventive actions were listed, which needed greater attention to avoid non–
compliance with 21 CFR Part 11.
The scope of the service was extensive and demanded real–time monitoring of electronic records,
audit trails, and necessity of monitoring compliance to enable 21 CFR Part 11.
Challenges
The multiple GMP–compliant labs located in several operating groups of the client were unable to
ensure data integrity across all their lab systems due to discrepancies in different lab instruments.
The instruments like Spectrometer, Titrator, Microscopes, UV Vis had their own way of capturing
electronic records and there was no control over data usage. In consequence, there were huge gaps
in meeting the regulatory compliance needs.

71. Marketing Pl A New Product Line Of A Non Alcoholic Craft...
Products or services need to be bought. Without marketing, this is generally not going to happen.
Marketing is a planned set of phases, either simple or complex, or in between. Marketing plans
include an overview, mission statement, SWOT analysis, marketing objectives and strategies, and,
lastly, implementation, evaluation, and control. This is the exploration of such a marketing plan for a
new product line of a non–alcoholic craft beer, "Mountain Brew Review" (MBR), created under the
umbrella of parent company, Molson Coors (MC).
Overview Beer has a long history. In 2000 B.C.E., Sumerians had prepared eight different beer
types, ranging from "strong," "red brown," and "good dark" (Mauk, 2013). Breweries have created
their own recipes, brewed their own beers–some with alcohol, some without. Over the past few
years, craft beer gained steady market share away from the national and international breweries
(Murray & O 'Neill, 2012). Separating one beer from the next is the product itself, and what the
product has to offer. Competition is ferocious due to more informed, sophisticated consumers, as
well as globalization and the spread of technology (Murray & O 'Neill, 2012). Within the craft beer
market, consumers have many products to chose. A product is anything offered within a market that
which fulfills a want or need (Armstrong & Kotler, 2015). In 2012, over 1,750 breweries operated in
the United States (U.S.), with over 1,920 the following year (Brewers,

Product placement, or embedded marketing, is a form of advertisement, where branded goods or
services are placed in a context usually devoid of ads, such as movies, the story line of television
shows, or news programs. The product placement is often not disclosed at the time that the good or
service is featured. Product placement became common in the 1980s.
In April 2006, Broadcasting & Cable reported, "Two thirds of advertisers employ 'branded
entertainment'–product placement–with the vast majority of that (80%) in commercial TV
programming." The story, based on a survey by the Association of National Advertisers, said

Publisher P. S. Harrison's editorials strongly reflected his feelings against product placement in
films. An editorial in Harrison's Reports criticized the collaboration between the Corona Typewriter
company and First National Pictures when a Corona typewriter appeared in the film The Lost World
(1925).[15] Harrison's Reports published several incidents about Corona typewriters appearing in
films of the mid–1920s.
Among the famous silent films to feature product placement was Wings (1927), the first film to win
the Academy Award for Best Picture. It contained a plug for Hershey's chocolate.
Another early example in film occurs in Horse Feathers (1932) where Thelma Todd's character falls
out of a canoe and into a river. She calls for a life saver and Groucho Marx's character tosses her a
Life Savers candy.
The film It's a Wonderful Life (1946), directed by Frank Capra, depicts a young boy with aspirations
to be an explorer, displaying a prominent copy of National Geographic.
