The document provides guidance on designing the cover of a pop genre magazine. It recommends using a mid-shot photo of a female pop artist making eye contact with the reader. Gentle, feminine colors should be used for the background to appeal to women. The main sell line should be in a bold serif font. Additional information should be on the left side in sections using bold fonts and colors to stand out. The cover aims to attract teenage female readers through bright, summery colors and a positive, fun aesthetic.
2. Background is a pink color
to appeal to the female
demographic.
Main image of a popular
female artist, in a mid shot
showing her full outfit and
figure. She is making direct
eye contact to engage the
reader.
Main sell line in serif
font so it stands out
from the rest of the
sell lines.
The masthead is bold
and black and is
covered over by the
main image.
3. All of the typography is in sans serif and is filled with gentle
colors, and some white and is in bold text so it stands out better.
The masthead has a black box around it, so that it stands out from
the rest of the cover, which helps to make it more memorable.
Within this magazine, the colors are very gentle on the
background, and the colors are quite feminine, which appeals to
women more, as they may be the more dominant target audience.
The image of the main artist of the cover is taken in a medium
shot and she is looking directly at the camera. Her outfit
consists of gentle cream colors to give a more feminine approach
to the cover.
The entire lighting is very bright to connote a positive sense to
the audience, but isn’t too harsh on the eyes. As it isn’t a
dark cover, it is more appealing as it looks fun and aesthetic.
4. Most pop magazines have a cover photo of male pop
artists who are dressed in rather fashionable
clothes. The dominance of the males on the front
cover is used to target the female demographic,
as they are most likely to read this particular
genre. If women are used, they are usually
dressed in bright summery clothes with many
‘girly’ colors on. Within the covers, the main
image is usually placed on the right side of the
cover, and the main sell line is below them. This
brings more focus to what the magazine is mainly
about.
5. The colors used for backgrounds are usually very vibrant and bright colors, to attract a teenage
audience, as it will make the cover stand out more within the rows of other magazines. The most
popular colors include pinks and yellows, as they carry positive connotations, as well as a
feminine vibe, to appeal more.
The sell lines and additional information are put down the left side of the magazine, and are
sectioned into parts that are easier to view for the reader. They contain famous names from within
that particular genre or news that may appear ‘juicy’ to the audience, and appear larger and
bolder than the rest of the information on the cover.
6. Overview
Image/ Costume- The image used on my cover will need to preferable be taken in mid shot, and the
model will ideally be wearing bright and summery colors could be seen as feminine by the
audience. The lighting of the image will need to be taken brightly so that it makes the entire
magazine appear bold.
Font- The font will need to be in a font that is sans serif, and will be filled with bold colors
to stand out. The sell lines will be bold and large, and will be down the left side of the cover.
Colors- I must stick with 3 main colors so that the cover does not overwhelm the reader, and they
will consist of colors that would target the female demographic more.
