1. In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions?
Question 1
Cover
I based my forms and conventions off a
magazine called Pop. I focused mainly on
the colour scheme, I used bright colours
and a white background. I have included,
masthead, barcode, price of magazine,
and a main image that is large in the
center of the page. The reason it is called
“UNORIGINAL” is because it is a pop
magazine with a slightly serious twist, the
reason I made it more serious than fun is
because I aimed it as a specific target
audience. The bright colour scheme
makes the target audience for 16 year
olds but the content of the magazine
makes
The Artists eye contact is
focused on the camera, this is to
engage eye contact with the
reader. The eye contact makes
the reader feel more
comfortable reading it.
Conventions
“Rhiannon Howells” is in red because
its bright and is easy to see. Pop
magazines use bright colours because
they are supposed to be fun and
bright. If I had used other colours
then the reader may not have been
able to understand the purpose and
genre of the magazine.
Colours: the colours that I used in my cover are the
same throughout the magazine, the main colours are
Red and White, I used red because it’s the same colour
as the artists dress on the colour of the magazine. I also
used black text on my article because it is the colour of
the artists hair and jacket.
Cover Forms
I took my own photos in a media room with
professional equipment. I used people in a photo-shoot,
took photos then edited them in photoshop. Once I
done this I put the image in the center of the page, this
makes the image look bold and the center of attention.
Images
I used many sizes of text throughout my magazine. The
bigger the text was the easier it was to read and it
engages the readers attention. I didn’t use a lot of small
text because I think that it would look boring and like I
over wrote everything.
Text
The masthead font was different from the rest of the
magazine, the reason that I did this was because the
font of the masthead was bold and stands out. I placed
the masthead in the middle at the top of the page.
Fonts
CONTENTS
Contents Conventions
The cover of my magazine is based of “pop magazine”
contents page, I did this because “pop” is one of the
highest rated pop magazines in the uk.
My contents is in the same font as the
masthead, this makes it easy to recognise
it is my magazine. I also put it at the top
of my magazine because it is easy to
know it’s the contents page.
I put my contents
numbers down the
side of the page.
This was so that the
reader can easily
navigate their was
around the
magazine.
I included a a quote in on my
contents page. They are not
always featured in every issue, but
I have put it because it is the main
part of my magazine.
My contents forms I have used make my magazine stand out from all the other pop
magazines.
Images: I used one main picture on my contents page, I did this so that y contents
didn’t look crammed and messy like a rock magazine would. The one main picture is
placed slightly to the right of the center this was to make space for my text down
the side, my image is very large and takes up most of my contents page up.
Colours: I used the same colours throughout the magazine, this means that my
house style is kept the same all the way through my magazine. This makes the
magazine more comfortable to read and visually see.
Text: The text I used was mainly information about the magazine, the only
acception was my article. The font in used in my cover was different from my
contents and my article, I decided to swap the font though out, this was because I
didn’t want the reader getting bored of seeing the same font over and over again,
all fonts however look perfect for a pop magazine.
Contents Forms
Article
I tried to make my article look like a pop magazine, but also a serious
informative side to it, for this reason I have used black font and used a
splash of red at the top to make it have the pop effect still. The white
background lets the black and red font easily stand out.
Article conventions
This is the headline of my article, this is the same
colour as my cover and contents, this has kept my
house style consistent all the way through.
I included a load of quotes, the reason
for this was because my article was a
Q&A. the text is the main focus on my
article, the reason for this is because
the reader is learning more about the
singer. I have used a black text, the
reason for this is because it stands out
on the white background.
Article Conventions
I used 2 images in my article, the reason for this
was because the 2 artists are touring together, by
doing this it allows there to be 2 photos centered
in the middle of the page, this makes it look
neater than one image spaced over 2 pages.
The following of my article, contents and article all follow the conventions of a pop
magazine, light bright colours, light backgrounds and funky text, this is the nature
of the genre.
I challenged my conventions of my magazine by using black as some of my text.
Black is a dark colour but it really worked with my light red and white background.
This is unlike a pop magazine to use a black text.
As well as this, the artists hair colour has changed between photos, I have done this
to suit the background of my cover, usually pop magazines would keep the artists
hair colour the same throughout the magazine.
Challenging Conventions

Article Photo-
Brown Hair
Existing Magazine
I based my magazine on various pop
magazines, I liked this Q magazine because it
used a bright red, white text and ginger hair
on the artist. I really liked this combination of
colours, they are bright and make it have a
positive, gentle feel.
Q magazines pack each page with a lot
Of colour, I tried to do this in my contents
page. I tried to use the same structure as
them, I like how the image is placed slightly to
the right of the page, however instead of
using another photo I decided to put a quote
in. This makes the reader what to read more
about her. I decided to use my own ideas for
my Article, this was to make it have a aspect
of my creation too.

  • 16. Existing Magazine I based my magazine on various pop magazines, I liked this Q magazine because it used a bright red, white text and ginger hair on the artist. I really liked this combination of colours, they are bright and make it have a positive, gentle feel. Q magazines pack each page with a lot Of colour, I tried to do this in my contents page. I tried to use the same structure as them, I like how the image is placed slightly to the right of the page, however instead of using another photo I decided to put a quote in. This makes the reader what to read more about her. I decided to use my own ideas for my Article, this was to make it have a aspect of my creation too.
