Charlie Duhigg The Power Of Habit Quotes
"Human consciousness, that wonderful ability to reflect, ponder and choose, is our greatest evolutionary achievement" (Wilson). In the novel,
The Power of Habit, by Charlie Duhigg; it describes how habits affect people in their daily lives both in a positive and negative way. It describes
various scenarios of products, or stories of people's lives to explain how habits are formed and retained. By using the various points of view and
experiences from various people, it helps the reader to be engaged and helps the book feel fresh all throughout. The novel has a feeling all throughout
its pages by discussing habits, at the same time by only hinting at the idea. Once the reader acknowledges the fact that the product or company is being
discussed the reader gets the immense "ah ha!" moment. Each section of the novel focuses on the different aspect of habits, so learning something new

Each section of the novel is an individual experience filled with memorable quotes and stories from some the most common companies and products
that people use almost every day. When a section is using an experience as a way to explain the significance of habits, it is filled with some great
morals and memorable quotes such as, "'I know he would have been really proud to know how much he contributed to science,' [...] 'He told me once,
pretty soon after we got married, that he wanted to do something important with his life, something that mattered. And he did. He just never
remembered any of it'" (Duhigg 30). The reader would get a bittersweet end to this particular section; however, by looking at the brighter side of things,
and not only in this section, but overall in each section.

Seven Effective Habits
The Seven Effective Habits brought a football team to victory, and made history for overcoming racism in a small town. The Habits transformed
individuals, a team and a community; key figures include Louie Lastik and Coach Boone. All began when the multiracial football team at T.C.
Williams High School, who bonded over training camp, had a winning streak, bringing fans of all skin together colour into one. Louie Lastik used the
seventh Effective Habit to better the team and himself. He was well rounded in the body (football), soul (singing about God), heart (getting along with
everyone) and brain (going to college). The balance within this individual is reasoned behind his open–mindedness when interacting with his African
American teammates.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the first day of camp, he judged his team not by race, but by skill. Also, Boone kept the practices difficult, showing his determination. This
attitude of firmness and intensity had no major transformations throughout the film which brought the team to victory. Without Coach Boone, the
team would likely be under the leadership of Coach Yoast; his priority was the white players getting their way would likely have resulted in a
disappointing season. The team's racial division was what Coach Boone knew he had to fix for him to reach the end, a win. After getting to know
one another through camp, a bond between black and white players was created. When people close to the players and crowds of games saw the
friendships the team had, they began changing their paradigm from races shouldn't mix (racist views), to don't judge by race. The first habit was shown
in characters such as Coach Yoast, Emma and fans. This change in view brought the town together to cheer for their team; one person's encouragement
may have been the reason successful play that won the game. In conclusion, the use of the Seven Effective Habits not only brought T.C. Williams High
School's football team to victory, but also create better

Essay about I’ve Got to Habit
I've Got to Habit
Overcoming bad habits or creating new ones is easier than one might think. Quality of life can be compromised by behaviors such as procrastination
and reluctance to change. There are people who believe they are set in their ways or who resist change by denying there is any need for it. Those are
simply cop–outs. Habits are broken by the same method they are created. When individuals begin tackling a few stubborn habits and creating a few
more desirable habits, life can become more enjoyable and worthwhile. It is important to distinguish behaviors from habits and habits from addictions.
As defined in the New Oxford American Dictionary, behaviors pertain to the way in which one acts or behaves. When abehavior is ... Show more

They'll have excuse after excuse or real interruptions that detour the mission at hand. On this list are usually a couple of things with real significance
that deep down they suspect they'll never accomplish. It is as if their conscience is peering back as if to say, "remember me or I know this will get
done," when in actuality it is a form of denial. It is likely they have put such things on the list to short–cut the truth. The truth is it only sent a
subliminal message to the procrastinator's unconscious mind; something like, 'good intentions qualify as long as they're on this list.' Funny thing is
usually one of the things on the list could have been done in the time it took to make the list. Procrastination is a behavior that must be addressed for
smooth transitioning during the process of creating healthier habits. Researchers have suggested that inhibitions and good intentions can hinder or
assist in the breaking of or creating a habit. Thus, although inhibition may be crucial, no research has yet been done on the role of inhibition in the
context of pre–existing habits. However, understanding the cognitive mechanisms involved in successful implementation of intentions is highly
relevant, and particularly so in the domain of health behavior, where people often try to change their habits by means of conscious intentions. The
present study, therefore, was designed to examine how intentions can lead to the

Can You Create A New Habit?
Can You Create a New Habit in 21 Days? "Fake it 'til you make it." We 've all heard the cliche for approaching something that seems out of reach.
There may be some method to the madness of that approach. But have you ever given much thought to what it takes to bridge the gap between
where you are now and where you want to be when it comes to eliminating old habits and forming new ones? Success is habitual. We have all
witnessed those who seemingly achieve amazing feats over and over. Think of Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan. What allows one
person to be an automatic peak performer every day without fail while others experience failure after failure? Most likely, the achievers have
created and practiced success systems, habits and rituals that serve rather than detract from their goals. If everything affects everything, which is, of
course, true, then it pays to take a holistic look at the current habits and patterns in ALL areas of your life, at work, at home and at play. You cannot
change what you don 't acknowledge so it pays to get real and be brutally honest with yourself so you can finally align your habits with your dreams.
How to Create New and Empowering Habits 1. Identify your current habits, the good, the bad and the ugly. You have probably practiced many of the
same habits throughout your life without realizing it. Keep a pen and paper handy throughout the day to capture habits as you become aware of them.
From the moment you wake up to the

Seven Habits Analysis
The results of my Seven HabitsВ® (Covey 2015) self–scoring profile confirmed areas of strengths and weaknesses within my leadership style. The
two foundational habits of Emotional Bank Account (Category 1) and Life Balance (Category 2) both had scores of 12 out of 18. These two categories
assess personal values and strengths, such as integrity, work ethic, thoughtfulness, and life–work balance. My strengths in these areas provide a firm
foundation to build leadership skills upon. There is one foundational area in which I scored a 3 out of 6. This area for improvement involves speaking
disapprovingly of others when they are not present, which often creates division and does not resolve issues. Improvement in this area will create

In both my work–life and my home–life, I strive to be proactive and take responsibility for my decisions, actions, and mistakes. I avoid blaming others
when things do not go as planned or when mistakes are made. I also strive to focus on things I can control and improve. This can often be a difficult
task, as there seem to be so many non–productive distractions, such as workplace complaining about decisions made by executive leaders. However, I
ultimately have little to no control over those decisions, and it is more productive to remain focused on issues within my scope of responsibility.
Beginning with the end in mind means I set goals, objectives, and paths to achieve them. I pride myself on being highly organized, and I often utilize
lists and calendars to remain on task. This laser focus on my goals has enabled me to reach significant targets and balance multiple demands of my time
and attention. Thinking win–win involves creating an environment of cooperation and collaboration, which is essential to developing solutions in both
the workplace and at home. The fourth area of synergy involves my ability to inspire innovative ideas within my team and develop more efficient
practices to accomplish goals and objectives. My continual development of these four habits have significantly aided my career and personal success,
and further honing these habits will provide even higher success personally and

Sean Convey 7 Habit Analysis
The first habit Sean Convey lists of the seven is "Be Proactive." This habit made an impact on me because it sends a message that I try to take into
account everyday, but haven't one–hundred percent fulfilled. The habit, "Be Proactive" is important because it says that you are in full control of
your life, your decisions and your attitude. A quote that Convey adds to support this message is, "You can not control what happens to you, but you
can control how you react." You choose everyday to be proactive or reactive. Reactive people act solely on impulse, whereas proactive people think
before they act, make decisions based on their values, and always find a way to move forward. Habit #1 is important because it teaches readers to take
initiative, be proactive rather than reactive, and to not let others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Convey adds the saying, "The road to anywhere is really a life to nowhere." To be headed in the right direction, Convey suggests that we need to be
selective with the people that are let into our lives, make sure they have our best interest in mind, and then do not be afraid to borrow strength from
those people to get to your final destination. The habit is also about understanding that it is easy to trail off in another direction, but also about
understanding how to get back on track. It is implied that to get where we want to go in life, mistakes must be embraced, other people's
prejudgments must be ignored, and learn to never settle. "Begin with the End in Mind" had an impact on me because it is a habit I need to focus on.
To implement the habit in my own life, I will write down goals, think about what I need to achieve the goals, and work hard to develop qualities I want

The Seven Habits
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey became a blueprint for personal development when it was published in 1989 First
of all, Covey defined habits as the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire: Knowledge is the theoretical paradigm, the what to do and why. Skill
is the how to do. And finally, desire is the motivation, the want to do. Now, a paradigm is a framework containing the basic assumptions, ways of
thinking, and methodology that are commonly accepted by members of a scientific community. The author divided the habits into two categories:
dependence and interdependence. Dependence is the paradigm under which we are born, relying upon others to take care of us. On the other side,
independence is the paradigm under which we make our decisions and take care of ourselves. Finally, interdependence is the... Show more content on

Imagine there are 2 people and a tree with 5 apples on it. They are both too short to reach the apples but if one of them sits on the other's shoulders
he can reach all 5 of the apples. This is called synergizing: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You can't achieve this with everyone but
you can always look for opportunities to create a synergy. With every synergistic opportunity you create, you can gather many more apples than when
you are doing it by yourself. Now to define synergy, it means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is
teamwork, open–mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. Because when people begin to interact together genuinely,
and they're open to each other's influence, they begin to gain new insight. The capability of inventing new approaches is increased exponentially
because of differences. And valuing differences is what really drives synergy, such as the mental, emotional, and psychological differences. These
differences should be seen as strengths, not weaknesses. Habit 7: Sharpen the

"Over two million copies sold" seeing that on the cover of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens I told myself to give it a chance. I had heard
many different opinions about the book. Most of my peers were not overly excited when the y finished. However I decided to go into reading the
book with a positive attitude knowing if I did enjoy it writing a paper about it would be much easier and I might even learn something. Reading The 7
Habits of Highly Effective Teens I saw many ways eachhabit pertained to my life. Some I felt I practiced fairly well while reading about a few others I
knew I needed a little work. The habit I need the most work on is undoubtedly being proactive and the habit I need the least work on is sharpening the

Since reading the chapter I have handled a lot of situations differently. For instance a few weeks ago there were some people spreading rumors
about me while I wasn't there. My friend called me later that day and was very upset. She told me what they had been saying and how mad she
was that people would say things like that. My response was "Alright that's too bad. That wasn't very cool of them, but I won't let that ruin my
week". My friend couldn't believe what I was saying. Usually I would be the one that would just let it all boil up until I blew up on someone.
Being proactive in this situation really felt great. It was a good start. My goal is to start being proactive in these situation and not let the little
things bother me. Even though I need some work on being proactive I feel I need the least work on sharpening the saw. Sharpening the saw means
taking care of yourself. When I first read this I thought well taking a few minutes a day to relax. That is easy, everyone does that. However going
on the chapter explained how sharpening the saw actually means taking care of the four main aspects of yourself, body, brain, heart, and soul. I
have always done a good job at taking care of my body. Soccer is by far my favorite hobby. I am currently playing for Heritage, and in the spring I play
on a Saginaw Travel team. I also enjoy running in my free time. When it comes to caring for my brain, I have to give my parents most of the

Examples Of Negative Habits Essay
Your thoughts and habits create our actions and emotions. When you think negatively, you are likely to get anxious and unable to perform well. We all
face situations that make us feel helpless or kind of stuck. The real things that prevents you from achieving your goals are your negative habits. Habits
take a big part of our life. When you unwittingly cultivate bad habits, sooner or later, they start working against your aspirations.
If you feel like you are not getting where you want, perhaps it is time to face the truth. Negative habits ruin your potential and decrease your chances
to succeed. Learning to identify them is the first step to changing your life for good.
Here is a list of the most common negative habits that hold people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you focus on the bad things, you can't keep progressing. Negativism in large amounts is self–destroying. It causes anxiety, not to mention it
affects motivation and productivity. No need to wear that burden. Although life is not all roses, positive attitude adds value to the reality you
experience. It is also a driving force to building necessary skills to help you grow intellectually and professionally.
#2 Blaming others for your failures
Blaming external circumstances or other people for your lack of achievement in the personal or professional field won't help you in any way. Telling
yourself things like, "My spouse is distracting me from work," or "My boss gives the high–paid projects to his favorites" is getting you nowhere.
Enough excuses. Focus on the things you can control and try to put them in the right direction.
#3 Procrastinating
Procrastination is a stranger to successful people. That is because they have dealt with it in the past. Procrastination is the most dangerous habit of
working people. The best way to break it is through building iron–strong discipline and time management skills. Never say "Oh, I have to deliver that
work next week, there is time." Time flies fast. Avoid postponing things to the indefinite future. There is a huge risk you would never complete them in
time. So, do it

When I read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens I was amaze about the topics cover in the book. This book is about a step by step guide that can
help you in the future where you want to be.The first habit is about being more proactive than reactive, because think before you act or just act. For
example your best friend went to a party specifically you ask him/her "want to hang out"and your best friend lie to you that their busy. So you want
to give her a silent treatment or talk to her and forgive her, listen what you are saying and acting to others. There is a lot I need to work on every
habit. The first Habits that I need to work on is to ignore the rude comment because if someone makes a rude comment about me I get mad and I say

In habit 3 is about put fun thing first before important things, like when there is a test is coming next week you can do whatever you like and
relax but if the test is coming in 3 or 4 days study. I do my homework, and study on time, for example when the test is coming up on 3 or 4 days I
study. The book also talks about get your confort zone out and I got my confort out when my friends are here. Also my family and I is going great we
always make promises but sometimes break them..Like sometimes when I promise something When I promise to get straight A's I break their promise.
The 4 habit is about life is a competition so think win–win because work as a team or you had to feel the win–win attitude.I haven't think about
win–win attitude Spacing out that is always my problem cause when I'm reading a good book I space out all of sudden. I get mad at myself I had to

Habit 7 Teens
In the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey explains 7 things teens need to live a good, open, and successful life. The author took
7 concepts teens don't do and made them easy to understand and learn to do. He manages to capture his audience's attention by sharing stories of
other teens that we could easily relate to. Habit 1 is Be Proactive. This means that we need to accept the reality that we have the power to choose how
we respond to the circumstances in our lives. We are ultimately responsible for our own lives, our actions, and our attitudes. Don't do anything that
won't get you somewhere. Habit 1 is all about focusing on the important things. I will spend more time on trying to do things that are proactive. Habit
2, Begin With The End In Mind. The chapter started literally with an end.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's the fulfillment of the 1st and 2nd habit. The habit is personally about time management. Habit 3 also shows us to eliminate unimportant things
in our life. So without the unimportant things in our life we will be able to focus on the important things in our life. I will focus more on the
important things then the unimportant things. Habit 4 focuses on making everyone happy. The point of habit 4 is think win win. This means
instead of competing to make one team a loser, compete to make both teams feel as a winner. This will make everyone happy instead of just 1
team. It feels good when we make one team lose. But it feels even better when both teams feel as a winner. I can focus less on myself and more on
others. Habit 5, seek first to understand then to be understood. In other words listen before you talk. A mirror is a great example. It does not give
advice neither does it judge. Instead of only listening with your ears also watch and get notes from body language. When you give feedback it is a
very important part of wanting to be understood. I will instead of trying to prove myself first I will seek

Internet when I did not understand how something was taught in class. There was always a lot of homework for the class, so I would tackle it

able to get through all of it and not feel as overwhelmed as I would if I waited until the last minute. I managed to pass the class because I used this habit
of mind. One habit of mind that I want to use more in the future is engaging. I am typically reserved and avoid asking questions so I do not seem

What Is A Bad Habit Essay
Everyone has bad habits. Some people smoke, some binge eat and some might even engage in self–destructive behavior. These habits are often deeply
ingrained into one's personality, to the point of becoming the traits by which many define themselves. If you want to change the course of your life you
have to learn how to change these bad habits. Although it is an often long and difficult process the results will allow you to succeed where you may
have otherwise failed. The steps below can help you learn how to identify, confront and eventually eliminate the habits that might control your life.
Changing Your Habits
Your bad habits are often part of who you are. You might make excuses for them, embrace them or even get a bit prickly when others bring them up. In
reality though, these are not just habits –– they are a failing. They might be holding you back from achieving success in business, your social life or
even love. Embracing your bad habits means simply learning how to live with what is going wrong, but eliminating them means that you are willing
to make a positive change in your own life. There is nothing that says that this is easy, of course, but you should be willing to try it. After all, getting
rid of your bad habits is one of the few ways that you can control your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

current bad habit with one that is just as bad. Or worse, you might even find yourself slipping back into old habits without giving yourself a chance
to change. Instead, you must consider breaking yourself of bad habits to be a journey that will allow you to understand not only what you are doing
wrong, but also to understand why you have made the choices that you have made. While this is not always a pleasant experience it can help you to

The Power of Habit
First off, we are creatures. We are animals. We're very sophisticated and good–looking and all that, but let's never forget that we're made of flesh and
blood. In particular, our brains are incredibly complex evolved machines. Our brains govern basic processes such as breathing and food intake, and
also enable us to appreciate the finer points of John Cleese's performances in Fawlty Towers.
As creatures, we have needs. We need to eat, and so we eat. As rather intelligent and social creatures, we like to chat with one another, and so we do.
We take turns and finish our conversations gracefully. And there are dozens and dozens more behaviors that are just as complicated, if not more so.
How on Earth do we get all of this done?
That's where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No writer feels like he is writing enough. We all watch too much television, spend too much time on Facebook, or waste our writing time doing other
things. For beginning writers, the problem is especially acute. With no editor giving a deadline, no fans clamoring for the next installment, and no
writing income, there is literally no incentive to write–at least not consistently. Beginners might write when they are "inspired," but with so many other
things pulling them away from the writing desk, how can they stick with it for the months and years it takes to carve out a writing career?
On the other hand, most professional writers write every day. Not because they are inspired more often, not because they have more free time, and
not because they are neglecting other parts of their lives. Pros write every day for one simple yet powerful reason. They've made it a habit.
We tend to think of habits as bad (smoking, cussing, biting your fingernails) but they can also be good (walking the dog, oatmeal for breakfast, a
weekly date with your spouse). THE POWER OF HABIT shows how easily habits form. They rely on three simple things–a cue, a routine, and a
reward–and don't take long to stick. Our brains love habits. They allow us to be efficient. They help us do things like drive a car without constant
self–monitoring. Once we learn where the brake pedal is and how hard to press the

Bad And Bad Habits
Habit is a learned behaviour that is repeated regularly and has become almost automatic like rising early in the morning, a cup of tea in the breakfast,
having a glass of milk before going to bed etc. These are the examples of habits which are limited to the individual. How you behave and respond to
others is also a very important characteristic of your habit and plays a crucial role in defining your personality. The habits can be classified as good or
bad.

Mini Habits : Smaller Habits, Bigger Results By Stephen Guise
I am striving for change. I want to make something a habit, it just occurs naturally, that I don't have to think about daily and I'm seeking this for
exercising. I have for years started an exercising plan with much push back mentally, but once I started I can continue because I love the way it
makes me feel. Then, I notice once I reach a goal I stop or allow an obstacle to give me excuses to why I can't continue. I currently dislike my body,
it weighs on my confidence, and makes me always question my husband thoughts. He is always supportive and helpful, but is it because he feels
he has to be. I need a change! Mini Habits: Smaller habits, bigger results by Stephen Guise is the book I chose for several reasons. First, because
the title mentioned smaller habits, bigger results, and to me this meant I could do little had have a greater effect. Second, I currently struggle with
my weight even though many think I'm small I subconsciously know I can and use to be smaller and that's my goals. Unfortunately, I don't stick to
my plan or the hardest for me is needing instant gratification so I tend to quit if results are not immediate. Finally, in reading the description of the
book mentioning "too small to fail" had me sold. My biggest obstacle is my self, in talking myself out of why there are better or more important
things to do then work out. So maybe this book will help me make lasting changes. Part II: Topics of Interest Guise stated, Small steps don't hold you

Power Of Habit Analysis
According to Duhigg who authored " The Power of Habit", in order for habits to be created a person must go through a process of which requires
thought, action, and repeating. Thought is considered the main reason people form bad habits throughout their daily life. Our mind plays a very
important role in creating habits. In the " Power of Habit" Duhigg asserts, "Most people's habits have occured for so long that they don't pay attention
to what causes it anymore." It is most important for people to realize what is causing their brain for doing these habits. Knowing what causes myself
to do certain habits is important because in order to change my habits I first have to know what exactly I do unconsciously everyday. By analyzing my

you have diagnosed the habit loop of a particular behavior, you can look for ways to replace old vices with new routines. This is important to know
because without identifying this habit you will not be aware or be able to analyze the reason as to why you constantly do this habit on a daily

Journal Entries for habit one and two Habit 1: Be Proactive According to Stephen Covey, being proactive is part of human nature and humans are
responsible for their own lives. He indicated the details of a social map which consist of Genetic determinism (Ancestors), Psychic determinism
(Parents) and Environment determinism (Boss or something in the environment). The proactive concept was explained further using the Stimulus and
Response relationship and the catalyst story of Viltor Frankl. Between Stimulus and Response, man has the ability or freedom to choose. This means
one can decide how to reactive to thing or how to handle each situation. What matters most is how we respond to what we experience in life. We need

In the same way, Algebra comes before calculus. To expatiate on this point, Covey noted that independence is an achievement. Interdependence is a
choice only independent people can make. So the place to begin building any relationship is inside ourselves, inside our Circle of Influence, our own
character. Stephen further recollected an incidence he had with his two sons to explain what attending to little things meant. To him, Small
discourtesies, little unkindnesses, little forms of disrespect make large withdrawals in our lives. In relationship for instance, the little thing are the big
things. Keeping commitments, Clarifying expectations, showing personal integrity, apologizing sincerely when we make a withdrawal from our
emotional bank are important things to do to make deposits in to our emotional banks. Covey mentioned that, with the paradigm of the Emotional Bank
Account in mind, we're ready to move into the habits of Public Victory, or success in working with other people. Habit 4: Think win–win (Principles of
Interpersonal leadership) Under this heading, Covey narrated his personal experience at work with a company and at the end he noted that, whether
you are the president of a company or the janitor, the moment you step from independence into interdependence in any capacity, you step into a
leadership role. You are in a position of influencing other people. And the habit of effective interpersonal leadership is to think win

My Leadership: The Seven Habits Profile
After completing the Seven Habits Profile, it helped me discover my strong traits as well as some traits I need improvement on to help me become a
well–rounded leader. In the Seven Habits Profile I had to answer statements from nine categories. I will be discussing my top three categories
(Emotional Bank Account, Think Win Win, and Synergize) as well as my bottom three (Life Balance, Seek First to Understand, and Sharpen the Saw).
The first category I will be discussing is the Emotional Bank Account. What is an Emotional Bank Account? "It is a metaphor for the amount of trust
that exist in relationships – personal and professional (Evoke Potential, 2012). From reviewing my results, it shows this is a strong suit for me. One of
the statements in this category was "I keep promises and honor commitments." I answered it with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Synergy is the act of working together to achieve a goal. On certain task, it is easier to work as a group than individually. I promote collaboration.
It allows me to see things from others point of view. Some people's perspectives can enlighten me on how to achieve a task in a more efficient way
than how I was previously completing it. As the organization I work for develops, it allows me to be able to suggest ideas to issues that arise. I
am able to converse with the supervisors to see if the idea will benefit the department. Now I am about to discuss my bottom three categories from
the Seven Habits Profile. The first category is Life Balance. Before I completed the Seven Habits Profile I knew I had an issue with this. I had a
difficult time balancing my work, school, and social life. I tend to focus more on work and school than I do other things. I put so much effort into
those things that when I have time to do things for myself I end up resting the whole day. Sometimes I end up burning myself out. I try to please

Analysis Of 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is like a book full of advice to help teenagers who are falling and is in need of help. The book explains the
goods and the bads of each everyday habit that teens use. The book also gives you ideas and advice to help you start doing these habits the correct
way. There is 7 habits that are explained in the book, beproactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win–win, seek first to
understand, then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw. I've learned a lot of things from the book like the more you listen the more you
gather information to state your own opinion, which i've been learned, and make sure to build relationships with everyone so you can gain trust
with that person. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is a good book for people who are in need of help and it can also make a big difference in life
if you follow and do what the habits say.
The first habit in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is be proactive or being proactive. This habit technically means to think before you do.
What i'm trying to say is don't react to everything that happens to you, like when a car cuts you off on the road, don't yell and scream at that driver,
just be calm and go on with your day. Be like water in a glass, water is calm and relaxed, but don't be like a soda can that was shaken up by someone,
because at some point it's going to build pressure and explode just like an angry person who has anger issues.

In The Power Of Habit, By Charles Duhigg
Routines, patterns, dependency, fixation, or even compulsion are all derived out of a habit. Habit patterns are hard to break, but knowing how to
properly break a bad habit my end up making you healthier, wealthier and can make and impulse behavior nonexistent. Some habits are good, while
others are bad. My bad habit is using chewing tobacco. I have used it on and off since 2004, for me I used it to pass time and now it has just become
an oral fixation with no reward. Reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg may help. What I have learned from Duhigg is that habits don't just
appear overnight, there is a systematic sequence of events that take place before one participates in their bad habit. It may not be apparent today, but as

zipping my pocket closed. All too often there are times when I run out of chewing tobacco, and when I do I have another can ready to slide into
the magical orifice of a pocket I have on my uniform. Days get busy, and there are times I run out of tobacco. This sets in motion a very
inconvenient routine. I have to instantly stop what I am doing, go around the office and see if anyone has a can that I can "bum a dip" from.
There are times all the other dippers are flying, have the day off, or are nowhere to be found, this is when I feel I have to take drastic action. After
already wasting 15 minutes walking around, I find myself wasting an additional half an hour driving to the one convenient store that sells my
preferred brand, Cope Straight. Finally after 45 minutes, I have a "dip" in my lip and a can back in its pocket. Now what? I satisfied my urge, I left
work and usually I have a lot to finish before my day is over, so not I'm behind. What was the reward if I'm

David Foster Wallace's Essay: The Golden Age Of Habits
THE HIDDEN AGENCY OF HABITS
Before we dive into the nitty–gritty of "small habits" and how they can make your goals easier to achieve, it's important to understand the presence and
sheer power of habits in our every–day lives.
Many of the things we do on a daily basis–stopping for coffee before work, reading the newspaper, taking a shower, exercising, watching TV, having a
snack–are habits that have been so programmed in our neurological pathways that we don't even know they exist. We move through our day like a
plane on autopilot, automatically responding to the happenings of daily life based on the habits we've learned over time.
There's a short anecdote from American author David Foster Wallacethat illustrates this idea rather nicely. During his commencement speech at
Kenyon College, the late Wallace said:... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The water is so much a part of their every–day reality that it goes unnoticed–or, as Wallace mentioned later in his speech, is "hidden in plain sight all
around."
Human habits can be explained in much the same way. Although typically unseen and unnoticed by us, our habits are powerful enough to impact our
decision–making and drive our daily activities. In fact, Duke University researchers found that over 40% "of our actions are unconscious habits." It is
this idea that validates the saying "old habits die hard" and often makes new habits exceedingly difficult to establish.
So should you stop trying?
Absolutely

of "take action" and "be responsible". It means that every person must be in control for his/her life and because the greatest influence that every human

Realizing what values and goals are most important to a person. This habit helps a person to manage his/her time efficiently, putting things in order

Habits of Authentic Leadership
Stephen R. Covey has authored numerous leadership and personal growth books. This paper focuses on the book titled "The Seven Habits of Highly
Effective People" and its relation to the theory of authentic leadership as well as its application to nursing practice. All seven of the habits are valuable
to nursing practice, enabling nurses to become more effective leaders and care providers. The habits applying to authentic leadership principles that will

Relationships are built and connections are established with others in order to strengthen the human bond (Shirey, 2006). Authentic leaders display
self–discipline by establishing a balance among their personal and professional lives (Shirey, 2006). These characteristics apply to the following habits
of effective people and can also be incorporated into nursing practice.
Begin With the End in Mind
One habit discussed in "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is "Begin with the end in mind", which is based on the concept of beginning
every day and every task with a clear vision of the desired goals and direction while being proactive to make these happen. This habit is grounded on
the ability to envision the future and define one's personal, moral, and ethical guidelines which contribute to the attainment of the desired outcomes or
destination (Covey, 2004).
This concept aligns with the characteristics of purpose and value in an authentic leader. Having this clear vision and drive to achieve outcomes is
also an important in a quality nurse. Each nurse possesses their own personal, moral, and ethical frameworks and these direct how nurses will
achieve their goals and which outcomes they desire. The ability to have a precise view of what one wants to accomplish would allow a nurse to
follow his/her dreams and passions to achieve what they truly desire in the flexible field of

Bad Habits Developed Over Time
A habit, by definition, is an act which is repeated by a person without the individual being aware that they are continuously displaying or committing
that certain behavior. There are many bad habits a person can develop over time. Some of these could include having a drug habit, an eating disorder,
or many other undesirable behaviors. These negative habits can all be broken and could lead to positive outcomes if they were to be broken
successfully. Many of the habits considered to be bad require a person to make specific changes in their life in order to conquer said habit. There are a
plethora of different steps and/or tasks that can be used to assist a person with the daunting task of breaking an unwanted habit.
One of the first steps that must be completed by a person wanting to end a habit they believe to be detrimental is to acknowledge the action and to be
aware of their situation. In some instances, this requires the person in question to admit that they exhibit problematic behavior because of the habit they
have. The act of admitting that their actions lead them to repeat negative acts or thoughts because of their habit is essential to eliminating it. With this
in mind, an individual must be aware of an issue before it can be resolved. Knowing the habit is present and affecting your life in a negative fashion is
a very important step within this process.
Many people have different things in their lives that they would like to change. A step that could be used

in a sense that you were trying to get at but lost in a main motive as well. The lose–win Attitude is mostly setting expectations super low and giving into
peer pressure. The Lose–lose attitude means that if you do not win then nobody can win. They usually make sure of that. The last Attitude that we

everyone can win and not comparing others in a negative way. Habit 5. This habit is about how we need to learn how to listen. We are always thought

Charles Duhigg The Power Of Habit Analysis
In Charles Duhigg's book The Power of Habit, he asserts that individual habits can be understood and changed. Duhigg backs this claim with a
description of the so–called habit loop which is composed of a cue, routine, and reward, pointing out the cues start habits and rewards signal the brain to
remember routines. The author's purpose is to give information about habits in order to change them for the better. With Duhigg's insight about habits,
students can stop the bad habit of procrastination, the habit of delaying assignments until the last minutes.
In particular, students should "recognize which craving is the driving behavior" of procrastination and change it as a first step to stop (50). I

Duhigg explains once habits are learned they suddenly become "automatic" and "mental activity decrease[s]" (15). Humans were evolved to "make
any routine into a habit" because "efficient brain require less room, which makes for a smaller head, which makes childbirth easier" (18). With this in
mind, breaking a bad habit is going against the natural human instinct to be efficient. Nevertheless, habits are still a good thing or else people have to
learn everything such as "backing your car out of the driveway" (17). Habits were essential for survival, so that why we have them. In hunter–gatherer
times, habits did "save effort" when it came to knowing where and when to hunt, and that gave humans a reward of food. Nowadays, our rewards do

Power Of Habit Chapter Summary
Is Change possible
Can people change? Most people say one can't change, everyone always stays the same. In the book The power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, he talks
about the powers of a habit's and how one can change these habits. A habit is something someone practices continually, that is hard to give up. Myhabit
is smoking, every time I go somewhere in my car I feel like smoking a cigarette. Duhigg hypothesizes that change can happen through the
manipulation of one's habit loop. The Habit loop is divided into 3 parts, the cue, the routine and finally the reward. To be able to change the particular
habit one first has to identify what their loop is. I will be using Duhigg's ideas of habit, to change my habit of smoking through the use of an ... Show

This can be easier said than done because to be able to change the routine the reward has to be the same. To change the routine Duhigg suggests that
one may use the Golden rule of habit change. This is the thing that will replace the routine in my case smoking, exchanging it with something else. In
the book, Duhigg uses an example where someone is trying to change their habit of nail biting. He suggests that this person should find a new
stimulation, he said this would help them get rid of the nail biting but keep the same reward. He suggested "... rubbing her arms or rapping her
knuckles on a desk– anything that would produce a physical response." (Duhigg, 76). This may only work if one has a Role of belief in habit change.
What he meant by that Is understanding the habit loop identifying the craving and wanting to change the routine of the bad habit. To be able to change
my routine I had to identify the craving which was the nicotine from the cigarette. Then I had to identify my golden rule of habit change which is either
using an e–cigarette or drinking coffee. At last I had to find the Role belief in habit change. The best way to do this is to find a community, People
or a group of people that want to achieve the same goal. Duhigg used alcoholics to portray the power and impact a community can have on
changing a habit. He believes that "AA trains people in how to believe in something until they believe in the program and themselves." (Duhigg,
85). In my chase, I had a friend who also wanted to quit so we decided to go for coffee once a day for a week. Instead of being in a social environment
that would provoke us to smoke we meet up in a small coffee and socialized while drinking our coffee. This gave the same reward as smoking because
coffee had caffeine and It gave the same social

Controversy Over Eating Habits
Everyone has some habit that they are not proud of, the 'poison of choice'. If someone were to ask me to pick my poison I would choose food. Ever
since I can remember, going out to eat has been by favorite pastime and I have used celebrations, holidays, or emotions as an excuse for unhealthy
foods and over eating. Breaking this habit will be an especially difficult one but can be achieved using the following five steps: "denial, awareness,
planning, implementation, and maintenance" (p. 593). Denial is how a bad habit starts in the first place (p.593). For me, this started by acquiring a
taste for the finer things in life and having the successful metabolism of one in their younger years. I would go out to eat with family or friends for
special occasions, we would order an appetizer, full meal, and desert, sometimes having finished off every last crumb. If I don't feel good or I am
unhappy I crave unhealthy foods, turning food into an emotional crutch. To top things off, through my childhood and adolescent years I have always

(p.523). Awareness has emerged for me because during this last year of inactivity I have gained weight and am tipping the scales at a weight that I
am embarrassed about. My clothes don't fit and I don't feel good about myself. I have become self–conscious about my weight and have realized that
something needs to be done before I end up obese like most of America. This motivation is intrinsic and in order for me to be successful I need to
sure of my ability to change my eating patterns (p.593). When others do criticize my current figure and laugh at my new curves that does make me
feel worse and I can see how it could jeopardize being

Charles Duhigg The Power Of Habit Summary
Habits have always been part of every human's lives and they the will always influence and control what people do. Charles Duhigg does an
excellent job of explaining this in his book, The Power Of Habit. However, Charles Duhigg's intent for writing this book isn't to just explain what
habits are and how they work, he also explains how to be aware of them, how to work with them and how to change them. Charles Duhigg's purpose
for writing The Power Of Habit, is to not just inform the reader about what habits are and how they form and work, but to also persuade the reader to
notice their habits and to change their old and bad habits to form new, positive habits in order to gain control and succeed in their life. He accomplishes
this purpose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now, instead of the author directly stating this in his book, he had to put it in an allegory. The author brings up a story by David Foster Wallace
about some fish swimming in water. It goes, "There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the
other way, who nods at them and says, 'Morning, boys, How's the water?'" The young fish swim on for a bit before one finally asks the other what
'water' is." (274) Now an allegory is typically used to hide or hold a hidden, deeper meaning, and that's exactly what's going on here with the fish story
that the author includes. You see, people will go through their lives not noticing the habits that they use and go through with in their life. The author
uses this fish tale to show how many people will go swimming through a world that's filled with habits and none of them even realise it. The author
wants people to notice their habits in their life, because once you notice and realize that you have a habit, you will then be able to change them and
form new and better habits over

Power Of Habit
Isaiah Padilla Swanson Psychology 1 2 December 2017 The Power of Habit Book Review In the book, The Power of Habit, by Charles Duhigg,
what people do in life, and why they do them are explained. It also explains to the readers the psychological, and physical ways habits are part of a
persons every day life. Also, it explains how businesses use the power of habit as a way to manipulate customers, and how socialization is effected by
it. The book is separated into three separate parts: The Habit Loop, The Habits of Successful organizations, and the Habit of Societies. The first section
describes what a habit is, and how it works. After that in the second section, the way businesses use habits to make customers get what the company
wants and efficiently.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book begins with the story of a man named Eugene Pauly, he was seventy one years old, but had lost his temporal lobe to encephalitis. It was
a virus that was mostly harmless, but it had reached the brain, causing it to decay. After being loaded with drugs to remove the virus, he actually
was perfectly healthy, and the rest of his brain was completely fine. The strange part was that he remembered everything before the year 1960 but
had short term memory loss. Any information he had learned would be tossed out within a minute. Constantly forgetting where he was, and
repeatedly performing the same actions. However, in a struggle to ensure Eugene had some exercise, his wife took him on a walk every day. It
became really strange when he would walk off on his own, on the same path his wife would take him, even though he could not remember where he
was at all, or where his house was. It turned out on later tests on him that the part of the brain that controls memory has nothing to do with a person's
habits. The book provided different studies and tests that had confirmed that people learn, but make unconscious decisions without memory or
consciously making decisions. The big idea for the first section was the habit cycle. This consists of a cue,

Charlie Duhigg's The Power of Habit Explained

  • 1. Charlie Duhigg The Power Of Habit Quotes "Human consciousness, that wonderful ability to reflect, ponder and choose, is our greatest evolutionary achievement" (Wilson). In the novel, The Power of Habit, by Charlie Duhigg; it describes how habits affect people in their daily lives both in a positive and negative way. It describes various scenarios of products, or stories of people's lives to explain how habits are formed and retained. By using the various points of view and experiences from various people, it helps the reader to be engaged and helps the book feel fresh all throughout. The novel has a feeling all throughout its pages by discussing habits, at the same time by only hinting at the idea. Once the reader acknowledges the fact that the product or company is being discussed the reader gets the immense "ah ha!" moment. Each section of the novel focuses on the different aspect of habits, so learning something new on every page is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each section of the novel is an individual experience filled with memorable quotes and stories from some the most common companies and products that people use almost every day. When a section is using an experience as a way to explain the significance of habits, it is filled with some great morals and memorable quotes such as, "'I know he would have been really proud to know how much he contributed to science,' [...] 'He told me once, pretty soon after we got married, that he wanted to do something important with his life, something that mattered. And he did. He just never remembered any of it'" (Duhigg 30). • 2. Seven Effective Habits The Seven Effective Habits brought a football team to victory, and made history for overcoming racism in a small town. The Habits transformed individuals, a team and a community; key figures include Louie Lastik and Coach Boone. All began when the multiracial football team at T.C. Williams High School, who bonded over training camp, had a winning streak, bringing fans of all skin together colour into one. Louie Lastik used the seventh Effective Habit to better the team and himself. He was well rounded in the body (football), soul (singing about God), heart (getting along with everyone) and brain (going to college). The balance within this individual is reasoned behind his open–mindedness when interacting with his African American teammates.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the first day of camp, he judged his team not by race, but by skill. Also, Boone kept the practices difficult, showing his determination. This attitude of firmness and intensity had no major transformations throughout the film which brought the team to victory. Without Coach Boone, the team would likely be under the leadership of Coach Yoast; his priority was the white players getting their way would likely have resulted in a disappointing season. The team's racial division was what Coach Boone knew he had to fix for him to reach the end, a win. After getting to know one another through camp, a bond between black and white players was created. When people close to the players and crowds of games saw the friendships the team had, they began changing their paradigm from races shouldn't mix (racist views), to don't judge by race. The first habit was shown in characters such as Coach Yoast, Emma and fans. This change in view brought the town together to cheer for their team; one person's encouragement may have been the reason successful play that won the game. In conclusion, the use of the Seven Effective Habits not only brought T.C. Williams High School's football team to victory, but also create better ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about I’ve Got to Habit I've Got to Habit Overcoming bad habits or creating new ones is easier than one might think. Quality of life can be compromised by behaviors such as procrastination and reluctance to change. There are people who believe they are set in their ways or who resist change by denying there is any need for it. Those are simply cop–outs. Habits are broken by the same method they are created. When individuals begin tackling a few stubborn habits and creating a few more desirable habits, life can become more enjoyable and worthwhile. It is important to distinguish behaviors from habits and habits from addictions. As defined in the New Oxford American Dictionary, behaviors pertain to the way in which one acts or behaves. When abehavior is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They'll have excuse after excuse or real interruptions that detour the mission at hand. On this list are usually a couple of things with real significance that deep down they suspect they'll never accomplish. It is as if their conscience is peering back as if to say, "remember me or I know this will get done," when in actuality it is a form of denial. It is likely they have put such things on the list to short–cut the truth. The truth is it only sent a subliminal message to the procrastinator's unconscious mind; something like, 'good intentions qualify as long as they're on this list.' Funny thing is usually one of the things on the list could have been done in the time it took to make the list. Procrastination is a behavior that must be addressed for smooth transitioning during the process of creating healthier habits. Researchers have suggested that inhibitions and good intentions can hinder or assist in the breaking of or creating a habit. Thus, although inhibition may be crucial, no research has yet been done on the role of inhibition in the context of pre–existing habits. However, understanding the cognitive mechanisms involved in successful implementation of intentions is highly relevant, and particularly so in the domain of health behavior, where people often try to change their habits by means of conscious intentions. The present study, therefore, was designed to examine how intentions can lead to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Can You Create A New Habit? Can You Create a New Habit in 21 Days? "Fake it 'til you make it." We 've all heard the cliche for approaching something that seems out of reach. There may be some method to the madness of that approach. But have you ever given much thought to what it takes to bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be when it comes to eliminating old habits and forming new ones? Success is habitual. We have all witnessed those who seemingly achieve amazing feats over and over. Think of Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan. What allows one person to be an automatic peak performer every day without fail while others experience failure after failure? Most likely, the achievers have created and practiced success systems, habits and rituals that serve rather than detract from their goals. If everything affects everything, which is, of course, true, then it pays to take a holistic look at the current habits and patterns in ALL areas of your life, at work, at home and at play. You cannot change what you don 't acknowledge so it pays to get real and be brutally honest with yourself so you can finally align your habits with your dreams. How to Create New and Empowering Habits 1. Identify your current habits, the good, the bad and the ugly. You have probably practiced many of the same habits throughout your life without realizing it. Keep a pen and paper handy throughout the day to capture habits as you become aware of them. From the moment you wake up to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My strengths in these areas provide a firm foundation to build leadership skills upon. There is one foundational area in which I scored a 3 out of 6. I avoid blaming others when things do not go as planned or when mistakes are made. I also strive to focus on things I can control and improve. This can often be a difficult task, as there seem to be so many non–productive distractions, such as workplace complaining about decisions made by executive leaders. However, I ultimately have little to no control over those decisions, and it is more productive to remain focused on issues within my scope of responsibility. Beginning with the end in mind means I set goals, objectives, and paths to achieve them. I pride myself on being highly organized, and I often utilize lists and calendars to remain on task. This laser focus on my goals has enabled me to reach significant targets and balance multiple demands of my time and attention. Thinking win–win involves creating an environment of cooperation and collaboration, which is essential to developing solutions in both the workplace and at home. The fourth area of synergy involves my ability to inspire innovative ideas within my team and develop more efficient practices to accomplish goals and objectives. • 6. Sean Convey 7 Habit Analysis The first habit Sean Convey lists of the seven is "Be Proactive." This habit made an impact on me because it sends a message that I try to take into account everyday, but haven't one–hundred percent fulfilled. The habit, "Be Proactive" is important because it says that you are in full control of your life, your decisions and your attitude. A quote that Convey adds to support this message is, "You can not control what happens to you, but you can control how you react." You choose everyday to be proactive or reactive. Reactive people act solely on impulse, whereas proactive people think before they act, make decisions based on their values, and always find a way to move forward. Habit #1 is important because it teaches readers to take initiative, be proactive rather than reactive, and to not let others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Convey adds the saying, "The road to anywhere is really a life to nowhere." To be headed in the right direction, Convey suggests that we need to be selective with the people that are let into our lives, make sure they have our best interest in mind, and then do not be afraid to borrow strength from those people to get to your final destination. The habit is also about understanding that it is easy to trail off in another direction, but also about understanding how to get back on track. It is implied that to get where we want to go in life, mistakes must be embraced, other people's prejudgments must be ignored, and learn to never settle. "Begin with the End in Mind" had an impact on me because it is a habit I need to focus on. To implement the habit in my own life, I will write down goals, think about what I need to achieve the goals, and work hard to develop qualities I want but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Seven Habits The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey became a blueprint for personal development when it was published in 1989 First of all, Covey defined habits as the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire: Knowledge is the theoretical paradigm, the what to do and why. Skill is the how to do. And finally, desire is the motivation, the want to do. Now, a paradigm is a framework containing the basic assumptions, ways of thinking, and methodology that are commonly accepted by members of a scientific community. The author divided the habits into two categories: dependence and interdependence. Dependence is the paradigm under which we are born, relying upon others to take care of us. On the other side, independence is the paradigm under which we make our decisions and take care of ourselves. Finally, interdependence is the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Imagine there are 2 people and a tree with 5 apples on it. They are both too short to reach the apples but if one of them sits on the other's shoulders he can reach all 5 of the apples. This is called synergizing: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You can't achieve this with everyone but you can always look for opportunities to create a synergy. With every synergistic opportunity you create, you can gather many more apples than when you are doing it by yourself. Now to define synergy, it means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open–mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. Because when people begin to interact together genuinely, and they're open to each other's influence, they begin to gain new insight. The capability of inventing new approaches is increased exponentially because of differences. And valuing differences is what really drives synergy, such as the mental, emotional, and psychological differences. These differences should be seen as strengths, not weaknesses. The author took 7 concepts teens don't do and made them easy to understand and learn to do. He manages to capture his audience's attention by sharing stories of other teens that we could easily relate to. Habit 1 is Be Proactive. This means that we need to accept the reality that we have the power to choose how we respond to the circumstances in our lives. We are ultimately responsible for our own lives, our actions, and our attitudes. Don't do anything that won't get you somewhere. Habit 1 is all about focusing on the important things. Habit 4 focuses on making everyone happy. The point of habit 4 is think win win. This means instead of competing to make one team a loser, compete to make both teams feel as a winner. This will make everyone happy instead of just 1 team. It feels good when we make one team lose. But it feels even better when both teams feel as a winner. I can focus less on myself and more on others. Habit 5, seek first to understand then to be understood. In other words listen before you talk. A mirror is a great example. When you give feedback it is a very important part of wanting to be understood. I will instead of trying to prove myself first I will seek ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We need to eat, and so we eat. As rather intelligent and social creatures, we like to chat with one another, and so we do. We take turns and finish our conversations gracefully. I have for years started an exercising plan with much push back mentally, but once I started I can continue because I love the way it makes me feel. Then, I notice once I reach a goal I stop or allow an obstacle to give me excuses to why I can't continue. I currently dislike my body, it weighs on my confidence, and makes me always question my husband thoughts. He is always supportive and helpful, but is it because he feels he has to be. • 24. David Foster Wallace's Essay: The Golden Age Of Habits THE HIDDEN AGENCY OF HABITS Before we dive into the nitty–gritty of "small habits" and how they can make your goals easier to achieve, it's important to understand the presence and sheer power of habits in our every–day lives. Many of the things we do on a daily basis–stopping for coffee before work, reading the newspaper, taking a shower, exercising, watching TV, having a snack–are habits that have been so programmed in our neurological pathways that we don't even know they exist. We move through our day like a plane on autopilot, automatically responding to the happenings of daily life based on the habits we've learned over time. There's a short anecdote from American author David Foster Wallacethat illustrates this idea rather nicely. During his commencement speech at Kenyon College, the late Wallace said:... The water is so much a part of their every–day reality that it goes unnoticed–or, as Wallace mentioned later in his speech, is "hidden in plain sight all around." In fact, Duke University researchers found that over 40% "of our actions are unconscious habits." It is this idea that validates the saying "old habits die hard" and often makes new habits exceedingly difficult to establish. So should you stop trying? Absolutely ... Bad Habits Developed Over Time A habit, by definition, is an act which is repeated by a person without the individual being aware that they are continuously displaying or committing that certain behavior. There are many bad habits a person can develop over time. Some of these could include having a drug habit, an eating disorder, or many other undesirable behaviors. These negative habits can all be broken and could lead to positive outcomes if they were to be broken successfully. Many of the habits considered to be bad require a person to make specific changes in their life in order to conquer said habit. There are a plethora of different steps and/or tasks that can be used to assist a person with the daunting task of breaking an unwanted habit. One of the first steps that must be completed by a person wanting to end a habit they believe to be detrimental is to acknowledge the action and to be aware of their situation. In some instances, this requires the person in question to admit that they exhibit problematic behavior because of the habit they have. The act of admitting that their actions lead them to repeat negative acts or thoughts because of their habit is essential to eliminating it. With this in mind, an individual must be aware of an issue before it can be resolved. A habit is something someone practices continually, that is hard to give up. Myhabit is smoking, every time I go somewhere in my car I feel like smoking a cigarette. Duhigg hypothesizes that change can happen through the manipulation of one's habit loop. The Habit loop is divided into 3 parts, the cue, the routine and finally the reward. To be able to change the particular habit one first has to identify what their loop is. I will be using Duhigg's ideas of habit, to change my habit of smoking through the use of an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be easier said than done because to be able to change the routine the reward has to be the same. To change the routine Duhigg suggests that one may use the Golden rule of habit change. This is the thing that will replace the routine in my case smoking, exchanging it with something else. In the book, Duhigg uses an example where someone is trying to change their habit of nail biting. He suggests that this person should find a new stimulation, he said this would help them get rid of the nail biting but keep the same reward. He suggested "... rubbing her arms or rapping her knuckles on a desk– anything that would produce a physical response." (Duhigg, 76). This may only work if one has a Role of belief in habit change. What he meant by that Is understanding the habit loop identifying the craving and wanting to change the routine of the bad habit. To be able to change my routine I had to identify the craving which was the nicotine from the cigarette. Then I had to identify my golden rule of habit change which is either using an e–cigarette or drinking coffee. At last I had to find the Role belief in habit change. The best way to do this is to find a community, People or a group of people that want to achieve the same goal. Duhigg used alcoholics to portray the power and impact a community can have on changing a habit. He believes that "AA trains people in how to believe in something until they believe in the program and themselves." (Duhigg, 85). In my chase, I had a friend who also wanted to quit so we decided to go for coffee once a day for a week.
