Jonas overcame his adversity from the painful memories and lack of individuality in his community by making a plan with the Giver to escape and release the memories to the people. Victor overcame his difficulty talking to a girl named Teresa by pretending to speak French, which impressed her and led to her asking for his help. Adam overcame his adversity from an injury preventing him from running by joining an art class, which helped heal his arm and improve his attitude.

2.  Jonas’ adversity came from the
pain from the memories the
Giver gave him. The fact that
being released was actually
being killed increased his
adversity. It also came from the
fact that the community took
away love, colors, and many
more other things because of
sameness.

3. Jonas persevered through
adversity by him and the
Giver making a plan for
Jonas to leave the
community and releasing
his memory’s to the
people of the community.
He also wanted to live a
normal human life and
was sick of the sameness.
He and the Giver hoped it
would change the
community.

4.  Victor’s adversity is how
he likes this girl named
Teresa, but doesn’t know
the right way to
acknowledge her. When he
did acknowledge her he
ended up being rude.
Victor was afraid of being
embarrassed and wanted
to impress Teresa.

5.  Victor perseveres by
pretending he knows how to
speak French. In class Mr.
Bueller asked if anyone
knew how to speak French
and Victor raised his hand.
Although Victor wasn’t
really speaking French
Teresa was impressed and
asked Victor to help her with
her French.

6.  Adam’s adversity is the fact that
he loved to run and got hit by a
car. It prevented him from
running like the way he used to.

7.  Adam persevered by
joining John Wilson’s
art class. While taking
his art class, Adam’s
arm started to heal. Not
only did his arm start to
heal, but his attitude
changed also.

8. Jonas
Jonas overcame his adversity by successfully
escaping the community and releasing the memories.
Victor
Victor overcame his adversity by impressing Teresa
and ending up being able to tutor her in French.
Adam (Zebra)
Adam overcame his adversity by joining John
Wilson’s art class and ending up healing his arm and
changing his attitude.
