2. Character One:
Jonas
Adversity: Jonas is chosen to be the receiver in his community and during his
training he discovers that his community isn’t everything that he thought it
was an he wants to show the people of his community that memories and
feelings that he received as the receiver and that they’re not actually living
in a perfect world.
Textual Evidence: Onpages 59 – 64 it show Jonas being chosen as the
Receiver of Memory.
3. Character One:
Jonas
How He Perseveres Through His Adversity: Jonas and The Giver come up
with a plan to release all of the memories that he received to the
community. He was going to run away from his community because if he
ran away, the memories would slip away and be released into the
community.
Textual Evidence: On pages 154 – 156 The Giver and Jonas are making the
plan.
4. Character Two:
Jimmy Valentine
Adversity: Jimmy Valentine is a thief and he cracks safes. He gets arrested
and when he gets out of jail he goes back to his crimes and robs safes
again. Because of this, a detective named Ben Price takes up the trail of this
elusive cracksman.
Textual Evidence: In the story, it says that a week after Valentine, there was a
safe burglary done in Richmond, Indiana. After Ben Price investigated it,
he concluded that it was Jimmy Valentine’s doing.
5. Character Two:
Jimmy Valentine
How He Perseveres Through Adversity: Jimmy Valentine goes to a town
called Elmore and he ends up falling in love with a woman named Annabel
Adams. Because of this, he seems to change his personality and habits to be
with her.
Textual Evidence: In the book it says that when he looked into her eyes, he
forgot what he was and became another man.
6. Character Three:
Ernie
Adversity: Ernie was a child with a mind that didn’t process things as fast as
other people did. His mind didn’t develop as fast and he couldn’t
understand certain things at certain ages.
Textual Evidence: In the book it says that Ernie wouldn’t be able to speak
sentences until he was six years old. He couldn’t sing a simple song until
he was ten. When he turned twelve, he would be able to understand what a
joke was.
7. Character Three:
Ernie
How He Perseveres Through His Adversity: Ernie opens up to a person
named Jack who works at his group home. Jack made a large garden in the
backyard of the house and that got Ernie interested in Jack because he liked
the idea of gardening. Then one day he saw a woman named Dolores and
fell in love with her. Then he started growing flowers for her and secretly
delivering them to hr everyday.
Textual Evidence: In the book it says that when he looked out of the window
of the restaurant, he saw a dark-haired woman wearing jeans and a black t-
shirt unlocking the front doors of the building, and that’s when he fell in
love with Dolores.
8. Reflections
Character One: Jonas overcame his adversity by leaving his town and
releasing the memories that he had to the people of the town.
Character Two: Jimmy Valentine overcame his adversity by changing his
personality and habits for the better.
Character Three: Ernie overcame his adversity because he fell in love with
Dolores and that changed his personality so that he would be less shy and
afraid of being in public.
