The Trans Pacific Partnership ( Tpp ) And Michael Froman...
Problem Statement:
The Trans–Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Michael Froman (United States Trade Representative)
need to decide whether it is necessary to reduce tariffs to benefit Americans and the economy or
keep the tariffs in order to keep certain manufacturing jobs in the United States.
Background:
This case represents a prime example in terms of market demand and competition. Nike is one of the
world's largest athletic suppliers for a various number sports and other activities. Nike is well
established globally and has over a million employees across 42 nations. New Balance has also been
in the market a long time since 1906, but not quite as large as what Nike has to offer. "New Balance
ranks as the fourth largest athletic footwear and apparel company in the world with $2.4 billion in
annual sales" (Assche, 2014). Both companies have been very successful with their products and
have an excellent reputation and image. Many consumers are brand loyal to both companies and it
will be extremely interesting on what side the TTP takes when it comes down to focusing in on the
importance of tariffs.
Question 1: With regard to the elimination of import tariffs on Vietnamese footwear, is what is good
for Nike Inc. also in America's economic interest? What about New Balance? The elimination of
import tariffs on Vietnamese Footwear will not only benefit Nike, but the American economic
interest as well. "The United States is the world's largest footwear market valued at $71.7

The Medical Technology Development Company
Medtronic is a well–known medical technology development company established in Fridley,
Minnesota. This company was founded in 1949 by Earl Bakken. The medical device company has
two headquarters of which one is located outside of the United States in Dublin, Ireland and another
one here in the United States located in Fridley, Minnesota. Medtronic has expanded across the
world in over 120 different countries. There are about 27 locations throughout the United States.
This company is well–known to the public eye and is growing daily. The target market for

Although Medtronic has only seen a 1% (Medtronic, 2017) increase in sales from their last reporting
in 201, it is still an increase for the company rather than a decrease. The focus on the cardiac devices
give Medtronic a great advantage on their competitors. Medtronic also has subsidiary companies
under them that also produce medical equipment that will boost their general revenue annually.
Covidien is one of the many companies that are a division of Medtronic that will help to increase the
annual revenue. A company as large as Medtronic has a large opportunity for international trading.
Being that the headquarter is in Dublin, Ireland, this is one advantage to retrieve the same products
for a lesser value outside of the United States and receive a higher profit when selling them in the
United States at a higher rate. Most of the products are manufactured within the headquarters in
Ireland and there are also some products or components of a product purchased from other countries
and the finish product is later produced by Medtronic. The opportunity to receive the products
internationally is a great advantage for the company to continue their road to success with little to no
loss in revenue. These items are usually set at a lower cost outside of the United States with a higher
quantity which produce a greater revenue. There is always a demand for medical supplies for

Labor costs
Labor costs in the United States are much higher than in many parts of the world. Consequently, the
costs of production for labor–intensive manufacturing can be significantly reduced by moving
factories overseas mainly to third world countries this is a common practice of Nike who outsource
there manufacturing to other companies in countries such as Thailand and Indonesia.[ ]
2. Cost of Shipping
The cost of shipping goods has dropped in recent years. Part of this reduction is the result of
improved efficiencies in shipping technologies. Also, tariffs on imports have dropped with the North
American Free Trade Agreement and other international efforts to promote free trade this will make
it easier for companies and corporations such as Nike to outsource the manufacture of their goods.
[4]
3. Free Trade as a Political Tool
Outsourcing manufacturing jobs overseas has the additional benefit of promoting capitalism and free
enterprise in many countries that have been run by communism and totalitarianism governments.
Many political scientists and economists believe that by increasing economic interdependence with
the United States, these foreign nations are more likely to develop into robust democracies and more
likely to establish a middle class of their own this fact can be used by corporations such as Nike to
justify outsourcing to these countries. [4]

Essay on Reconstituting Local Manufacturing
Is it possible to reconstitute local manufacturing and local food markets, or has Globalization
ultimately made this impossible? The global economy and marketplace have impacted local industry
and local manufacturing harshly. With consumers having choices from international companies able
to import their products, a common market pool for the whole world, it has become more difficult
for the local merchants to thrive. Also, many Western companies have established themselves in
developing countries, such as McDonalds and Starbucks, with over 31,000 and 18,000 locations
operating worldwide respectively. While the influx of multi national corporations has created
economic opportunities for many in the communities that they operate within. ... Show more content

While these foreign investors infuse currency into the local economies, the toll they take on the local
markets, may not be worth the tradeoff. Could the local governments be taking or mismanaging the
funds? Perhaps the cash infusion could be put to better use to help stabilize or revitalize the local
manufacturing and markets. The case could also be made that the concessions that the local
governments make to entice international companies into their country make it difficult for or at the
least do not address the local manufacturing companies and their concerns. Because of the problems
caused for the local manufacturing and food markets, wages and income for the local population
also suffers, which influences their purchasing power. This creates a circular effect because without
purchasing power the local community cannot support more local manufacturing. This is certainly a
way in which globalization has hindered local manufacturing and will make it difficult to
reconstitute it in the future. Some of the ideals championed by those who favor globalization will
naturally work against the reconstitution of local manufacturing and food markets. For example, the
principle of economic advantage commonly referred to as the iron law, demands that the best of the
countries that initiate competitive strategies is deemed to outdo other competitors from the market.

US TRADE AND ECONOMY
Then and Now
Oshin Nandal

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As we know US went from being a net exporter to a net importer in a short span of time. Currently
US economy is strong but with lots of debt. These changes in trade gap and debt were caused
basically due to other developing nations coming up with low cost manufacturing system and thus
US ended importing products from other countries. Also many US manufacturers moved their
factories abroad due to cheap labor and other services. Some companies are considering reshoring
and bringing at least some part of the process back to US as labor cost and other services are rising
in other countries. This paper gives a detailed account of all the factors ... Show more content on

This recovery of the European and Japanese economies, and the advancement of industrial limit in
the developing countries unavoidably diminished the share that United States had in world exports
and output. By the 1970s, exchange examples reflecting fundamental similar point of interest had
been restored, and the United States was at the end of the day a merchant of buyer products. The
United States global speculation position soon after World War II was very small.
United States resources in 1950 totaled $17.5 billion and investment done outside was $8 billion.
During this time US was open to all trade options, but had a small part as an owner in international
assets. The resources and other factors have been growing since 1950 at a constant rate of about
10% an year. This served as an internationalization of the investments during the period, which
United States lost its powerful position in world trade market. US was making surpluses in mid
1960's in areas such as trade capital stock, horticulture and chemicals, and was falling behind in
buyer things and nonagricultural mechanical supplies and materials. All automobile products were
surplus at first, but then changed to deficit in 1968 in trade market. (Please refer the table)(Feldstein)

Outsourcing Benefits
To understand whether or not outsourcing is beneficial, it is important to have a complete
understanding of what it is. Simply stated, outsourcing is a practice employed by some companies in
order to reduce cost by transferring work to third–party suppliers rather than keeping the work
within the company. The most widely known example of a company which outsources jobs is Apple.
Rather than keeping the manufacturing of its products in the United States, Apple chooses to
outsource jobs to a third–party, major manufacturer in China called Foxconn, famous for providing
the world with iPhones, iPads, and many other Apple products. Because outsourcing transfers a lot
of American labor overseas, it is often heavily criticized by a lot of working class Americans. Many
see the practice of outsourcing as immoral because companies are sacrificing the welfare of its
workers simply to increase profits. The negative effects of outsourcing within the United States can
be seen in many industries such as manufacturing, information technology services, research and
development, and call centers. Cumulatively, all these industries provide millions of jobs, some
well–compensated, to Americans. In the 21st century, however, Americans are increasingly pursuing
high–skill employment so some of the low–skill jobs in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a large English–speaking population, American companies do not have to worry about any
barrier language barriers with regards training and negotiation. In addition, India also has a large
population of unskilled workers who can work either manufacturing, or the call centers. Perhaps the
most important benefit of outsourcing to India is its lack of regulation which allows companies to
compensate workers far below the value of the work they are doing. Because of these reasons,
essentially any company which requires call centers and manufacturing bases see India as a viable

Within A Dynamic Economy, Like The United States, Jobs
Within a dynamic economy, like the United States, jobs are lost and created and workers are
displaced and reemployed continuously. There will always be technological advancements that are
replacing jobs. For example, automation in the manufacturing industry have replaced people in the
workplace. Automation performs much more efficiently than a person performs. In this paper I am
going to analyze the effects that automation has caused in the job market and how it will continue to
affect various industries. I am also going to compare automation job loss and outsourcing job loss.
In my own terms, automation is the creation and application of technology to monitor and control
the production and delivery of products ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One multi–tasker bot, from Momentum Machines, can make (and flip) a gourmet hamburger in 10
seconds and could soon replace an entire McDonalds crew. A manufacturing device from Universal
Robots doesn't just solder, paint, screw, glue, and grasp, it also builds new parts for itself on the fly
when they wear out or bust. And just recently Google won a patent to start building worker robots
with personalities. There is a predisposition that robots and automation can do one thing and one
thing only. There are currently machines that do many things that would take multiple people to do.
In the near future cars may be able to drive themselves and cooking may be completely automated.
There is no limit where automation could take us and depending on the perspective you take, its
benefiting the world. It is clear by my examples above that automation reduces the amount of labor
required to produce a good or service, it produces product more efficiently, and it promotes
innovation in all industries. Is automation worth the job loss that it creates? Can jobs be created due
to an increase in automation? The United States did indeed lose about 5.6 million manufacturing
jobs between 2000 and 2010. But according to a study by the Center for Business and Economic
Research at Ball State University, 85 percent of these jobs losses are actually attributable to
technological change, largely automation, rather than international

Competitive Alternatives Survey
A company involved in manufacturing medical devices decides to begin sourcing components
internationally. As for now, it operates in the United States and Germany only. So, senior
management should assess the relative manufacturing costs worldwide to choose where to source.
This decision will be made based on manufacturing costs.
Cities with the Lowest and Highest Manufacturing Costs
The latest Competitive Alternatives survey was published by KPMG in 2016. It is the comparison of
more than 100 cities in 10 countries all over the globe. The key finding of the report is that Mexico
has the highest relative cost advantage if compared to the United States, and Japan has the lowest
(KPMG, 2016). However, the area of interest of this investigation is to determine three cities with
the highest and the lowest manufacturing costs for the company's specific industry – medical
devices manufacturing.
The 2016 report specifies that Monterrey and Mexico City in Mexico offer the lowest prices if
taking into consideration facility cost (factory rent). The same is true about utility (electricity and
natural gas), labor (salaries, statutory plans, etc.), and transportation (surface and air fright) costs. In
general, Mexico is an attractive destination for sourcing because manufacturing costs are almost 22
percent lower than in the United States (Medical devices, 2016). The second cheapest country is
Canada. In

The Political Factors Of Apple
pple is a business in today's society well known for its technology. The company created by Steve
Jobs, started a legacy to one of the biggest innovations of all times. Starting as a computer company,
it soon branched out into many other electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, music
players and television sets. In recent years, Apple has focused more on entertainment and
information aspect of their company. It is now one of the world's largest online retailers of music,
streaming video and software solutions, including smartphone apps. When going into the
Environmental factors of the company Apple, they are many things that affect the business. First is
the Political factor. The correlation between apple and the political factor is money. The company
Apple is one of a number of American technology business that has gained an ample amount of
money throughout the years . In 2015 the business as a whole had $34.7 billion. This is create calls
for higher corporate taxes in the United States, where income inequality has become a common
political issue. Another thing is that Apple is rely on the low cost manufacturing from China. Social
and political issues with China could disrupt manufacturing or increase manufacturing costs.
Previously There has been calls to restrict Chinese imports in the United States in an effort to boost
American manufacturing. Which means if any altercations between the United States and China can

Outsourcing And Re Shoring Production
A globalizing economy along with cheap telecommunications technology is making it effortless for
countless occupations that were formerly invulnerable to offshoring to be sent overseas. As
globalization advances, the off shoring movement is likely to escalate as well. Nonetheless,
numerous manufacturing companies such as Caterpillar, Bosh, and Phillips have disclosed that they
will return part of their off–shored production to their home countries.(When Manufacturing moves
back 1) Throughout this paper I will discuss the politics of offshoring and re–shoring production as
well as reflect on globalized production and how these concepts will play out politically. The impact
of offshoring is not a new topic in the global business world. Offshoring has matured into a high–
profile argument over the last few decades. As a result of offshoring, countries like the United States
have exported countless jobs to foreign countries. As technology improves as well as the
modernization of countries such as China and India higher numbers of service jobs will be moved
offshore (The Next Industrial Revolution.) Although offshoring has delivered enormous economic
benefits, it also has created a heavy political toll. Offshoring has led to increased amount of jobs and
rising standards of living in for laborers in low–cost countries, rich–world workers have been able to
leave the grunt work to someone else, and companies with lower labor cost have brought higher
profits. Western consumers

The host of the video interviewed several different companies. Every company he interviewed was

plants from another country to America. The Mississippi State University speaker stated that
America had a net lost 200,000+ a year and is now up that much or a little more a year. The oldest

Grant Dorris8/27/17I hope the spokesman from Mississippi State is right. America needs more jobs.
Between China and NAFTAAmerican manufacturing has really been distressed. I found the video
very interesting. I didn't know that American manufacturing had gotten so competitive with China. I
think it would be great to gain some manufacturing jobs in America. New Albany used to be in the
biggest furniture making area in the U.S. When NAFTA and China started taking jobs it became a
ghost town. Now that jobs are coming back it would be good to see it thriving again. The labor force
in New Albany are very skilled in furniture building, so a furniture company would be perfect in that
area. I realize that, right or wrong, everything is about a dollar in the end. It has been my experience
in the timber and agriculture industry that American made products are much more durable than
Chinese products. A lot of their products come out of the box with defects. Customer service has
basically went down the drain since the outsourcing of manufacturing as well. The aluminum fan
plant mentioned that they were required to have some extent of customer service. That was a big
reason the reshored that company to the United States. American workers created a better product
and were a lot better at trouble shooting than Chinese workers. I was glad to see the hat company

The Impact Of Apple's Global Impact On Apple
APPLE'S GLOBAL IMPACT The world's leading software and electronics manufacturer "Apple"
has revolutionized business operations in America. Apple's "global ingenuity" (Robbins & Judge,
2013, p. 35) or its ability to use comparative advantages to advance its operations is a game changer.
In acknowledging Apple's global stance, we consider the pros and cons for business decisions that
propel the company forward, the expansion of its workforce outside of the United States, and the
increase of employee diligence and flexibility at manufacturing facilities internationally. PROS
AND CONS OF LOCAL AND OVERSEAS LABOR The world economy demands individuals
drive innovation. Apple, has nearly 750,000 employees with only 43,000 of them being a part of the
American workforce (Robbins & Judge, 2013). Apple discovered that employing skilled workers
outside the United States to assemble product hardware would position the company to better meet
product demand. Global expansion equips Apple with the ability to meet demand, guarantee its
customers a quality and reliable product, which in return generates billions of dollars in revenues
annually. Although Apple is flourishing, acquiring overseas labor makes United States workers seem
unmotivated and unfit to meet the demands of major companies (Robbins & Judge, 2013). This
limits the possibility for American workers to be employed in the world market by other major
companies. However, it is inaccurate that American workers are unfit.

Pros And Disadvantages Of Globalization And Globalization
Long gone the days in which we find products that are locally made. Many of the items we own
have been across seas. Our country has become much more of an importing company than an
exporting one. We consume so many of the goods that countries overseas provide. As a country
facing controversy on economic growth it is important to get back to the concept of manufacturing
our own goods. Our world now is to globalize everything, especially if it increases our profits and
lower our production costs. Introduction to Globalization and Manufacturing Globalization refers to
act on trade across other nations. It basically is connecting with other markets to provide the goods.
It is to make one's own economic growth and make it global. It takes one business from being
locally known to being a worldwide item. Globalization has taken its shift to less developed
countries. It has been given less developed countries the chance to be part of the global market. The
less developed countries in return provide their services in production at a very low price. Every
concept has a goal. In the case of globalization it is primarily meant to take businesses a higher
advantage of cutting their operating costs and making more profit. Companies find alternative places
that will provide the resources needed to provide the final product. Globalization seems like a sweet
deal to many businesses that are trying to take their product worldwide. Many of the people that

Barbie is manufactured by Mattel, which was founded in California in 1944, and has dominated the
toy market ever since. Barbie helped to create a name and an Empire for Mattel, who later
introduced products such as Hot Wheels and Polly Pocket. Mattel, for many years, had a great
reputation and produced products that were safe and children loved. Mattel began moving their
manufacturing operations overseas about twenty years ago, and until recent years had enjoyed
continued success. When Mattel began moving a majority of their manufacturing operations to

As children grow their bodies are able to absorb more lead than an adult (Pearce & Robinson, 25–5).
At the time of the recalls, China did not have regulations in place regarding the levels of lead in
paint. In addition to lead being found on paint used in children's toys, Mattel would eventually end
up recalling millions of products that contained unsafe, removable parts. In the end, Mattel ended up
recalling 19 million toys made in China. There is a large cost advantage to doing business in China.
Chinese manufacturers are able to manufacture products at a cost that is 30%–50% less than in the
United States. The savings associated with foreign manufacturing is too much for most companies,
including Mattel, to pass up. Everyday more American jobs are outsourced to China because of their
ability to manufacture products for significantly less than in the United States. When it comes to
manufacturing, China has a comparative advantage, or the ability to produce a good at a lower
opportunity cost than another producer (Mankiw, Pg. 55). Not only have companies, such as Mattel,
saved billions of dollars over the years, so has the American consumer. It is estimated that, since
1978, consumers in the United States have saved approximately $100 billion by obtaining cheaper
products from China (Ahlstrom & Bruton, Pg. 4). It is no wonder jobs are continuously outsourced
to other countries. Financially speaking, it seems products manufactured in China benefit everyone,

Manufacturing today includes all facets of research, development, production, sales, distribution,

For this manufacturing company they would have to produce their high–end items in the United
States and would probably benefit from establishing their headquarters in the US as well. The
security and elaborate IT infrastructure of the United States will increase their ability to command
and control their global operations in Mexico, Turkey, and France.
Mexico
Mexico is the United States' second–largest export market and third–largest trading partner. Many
large global companies have chosen to locate significant manufacturing operations in Mexico,
particularly along the U.S. Mexican border (TACNA, 2013). Mexico is in a strategic location to
large US consumer base. Many US companies manufacture their goods in Mexico and use trade
agreements and established distribution channels to flood the American market.
The human capital in Mexico has significant advantages to a manufacturing company. Their labor
cost are about 25% lower then the United States, and the laborers work a standard 48 hours work
week (TACNA, 2013). In the last couple of decades, Mexico has dramatically increased its numbers
of university and technical schools. This investment in education instills confidence that a
technically capable workforce will only grow in size in the future.
Organizational capital in Mexico is not as significant a hurdle as in other locations. One of the
biggest miscalculations that Western business people make when dealing with Asian cultures is the
huge culture gap.

Local procurement of materials provides an ease in production at the plant in Hangzhou. Costs are

Throughout the process careful negotiations must be done to ensure there are adequate materials as

to produce a large amount of stock fans as well as special order merchandise. With specialty orders
the process for procurement shift slightly because of the unique nature of the order and the variety

Pros And Cons Of Made In America
"Made in America"
The trend towards outsourcing overseas and the slowly decreasing of American manufacturing has
made it very difficult to find American–made goods, but not impossible. There are a few small
businesses that are still dedicated to manufacturing goods in the United States, but in today's society,
they are hard to come by. Buying goods manufacturing in the USA is something that us consumers,
business owners and even the government can do to support these businesses that manufacture their
products in America.
Pros:
1. No Language Barrier: Communication with your suppliers would be much easier if you're

Outsourced jobs are usually done by workers who are overworked, underpaid, sometimes physically
abused or work in dangerous working environments.
3. Environment: By manufacturing goods in the United States, air pollution and environmental
burdens will definitely increase. Much of the production and manufacturing in America is dependent
on energy and relies on many different resources for producing goods. As Americans, we want to
live sustainably and support USA, but by increasing United States manufacturing, we're increasing
air pollution and will continue hurting the environment if we're using American resources and
production.
4. Overseas Competition: 98% of clothes bought in the United States are made overseas, with China
being by far the leading country, which leaves only 2% made in America. There is no way that
America could even come close to the amount of goods that China produces. In just one city in
China, they manufacture 1/3 of the world's socks! I don't think it is even feasible to compete with
China now, or ever. What we're good at manufacturing here in the United States is the production of
advanced goods such as winter proof, waterproof, and wind proof clothing. But besides that, I don't
think we will ever be able to compete with China's high rate of production.

Global Strategy : Global Marketing
Global strategy:
Global strategy is considered as a detailed plan on how an organization or a firm can be successful
marketing its products or services at global level to enhance business growth, and increase profit
margin (Lynch, 2014).
Organizations or firms will have many reasons why its imperial for the businesses to penetrate or
enter global market, some of these reasons will include to increase profit margin, increase sales,
expand the scope of the business at a global scale, and increase market competitiveness (Winters,
2015). To effectively accomplish the global business goals and objectives by any firm, the company
will require an extensive detailed comprehensive global strategy to effectively accomplish their
business goals.
Other International strategies:
Some of the international strategies to include multinational strategy where a company is involved
in several market outside of its home country, the company will then be required to designed
different strategic methods for each of the markets because of competition, customers request and
demand are different from country to country as competitive advantage is determined separately

Clothing Company Should Have Kept Their Domestic...
Balagny Clothing Company should have kept their domestic operations within the country rather
than outsourcing the work to China and Mexico. I understand that companies want to cut cost and
find ways to lower their expenses and gain profits but when outsourcing to other countries, there
will be several factors that are tied into play. Wages are not the only thing that weighs on the
decisions which is what Balagny Clothing Company made a decision off of. Sure the wages of
China and Mexico are much cheaper and cost effective but the inconvenience of shipping, having to
deal with foreign contractors through managerial role, the lack of logistics, environmental forces
that come into play, country's regulations and laws, etc. Is it really worth outsourcing operations just
to save on wages and provide more headaches when we need to deal with problems with a foreign
country. When companies outsource the manufacturing jobs to foreign countries, the US will take a
direct hit of the blow. Millions of workers will lose their jobs to the foreign country and the United
States economy will suffer losses as well. According to AmericanProgress.org "Manufacturing
employment collapsed from a high of 19.5million workers in June 1979 to 11.5 workers in
December 2009, a drop of 8 million workers over 30 years." That alone is a huge number
considering that manufacturing jobs were the driving force of the United State economy for decades.

This means that people that were not able to afford the products can now buy them causing an
increase of sales in The United States, Mexico and Canada. No tariffs allowed businesses to
compete in the world marketplace to expand and deliver customer goods. Big manufacturing
companies saw that the cheap labor was available in Mexico and moved their manufacturing
companies. Many of these companies had unions and the unions were negotiating for higher wages.
This could have caused a company to go bankrupt or invest in machines (robots) to replace people.
This in turn led to manufacturing companies moving to Mexico in order to make profit and continue
lower prices. As a business owner I would agree that just keeping a company afloat is not good
business. Profits need to be met or company can go bankrupt and jobs will be lost. Many people lost
their jobs due manufacturing companies moving to Mexico for profit. About 700,000 jobs were lost
in the United States with 55,000 being in Texas. Pg 18. Texas Public Policy released a study that "El
Paso is reported to be "hit" the hardest by NAFTA. About 10,000 workers have been effected by the
loss of jobs, yet the El Paso region has an increase of exports creating 38,000 jobs since NAFTA".
Economic growth is seen in El Paso. El Paso is growing and seems to be under construction for the
last 5 years. The transportation industry is booming as evident by new businesses being built such as
motels and convenient stores near the main highways. Construction to accommodate the
transportation industry creates new jobs which leads to economic growth. In the last five years of
traveling to El Paso and back to Corpus Christi, no matter the time of day, the highways are busy

They often have restrictions which includes geographical/and field use limitations and customer

United States Patent and Trademark Offices (2009) a patent for an invention is the grant of a

in 1970 the patent cooperation Treaty was adopted. This particular agreement addresses the

The Downward Sprial of the United States Economy Essay...
The Downward Spiral of the United States Economy In the world to date, there seems to be an
increase of world governments needing bailouts, and people of the world needing assistance from
the United States. This idea has caused many Americans to come to the conclusion that if the United
States closed off borders to foreign trade, it would increase it's standard of living and make America
more profitable. However, this idea is false. The United States must not close off it's borders to
foreign trade because if trade borders were to close, American manufacturing plants would begin to
shut down, the American transportation system and public services would suffer resulting in
American job loss. If the US closes off borders to foreign trade, ... Show more content on

The US transportation industry would suffer economic hardships jobs would be lost and
transportation companies would shut down due to lack of business. The United States imports sixty
percent of all oil used from foreign nations (Lugar). If foreign oil was not imported, an immediate
price rise would be in effect on the oil that is gathered and stored internally. Because it can take five
to ten years to start up an oil processing plant, the oil reserves in the US would be depleted. The
price for a gallon of gasoline would double, seriously affecting transportation: "Saudi Arabia has the
largest [oil] reserve capacity followed by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates" (Lugar).
If the US closed off borders to foreign imported oil, then not only would the American
transportation system would disappear but thousands of American jobs would be lost. Diesel is used
in the transportation of goods in America in both semi–trucks and modern trains. Not only is diesel
and gas used in the transportation of goods but also in the creation of them. If the US stopped
importing foreign oil, and the prices on both gasoline and diesel rose exorbitantly: so too would the
cost of the products they carried and helped to create. Transporting goods state to state would
become costly and eventually, would stop altogether. Closing American borders to foreign oil will
cause problems for to the transportation industry as well as

1. Summary:
In the case study we can see that the authors talk about the importance of innovation when it comes
to the long–term success of every product company. By reading the article one gets an
understanding that the authors are asking executives of any product company should not view
manufacturing as a cost center and by shifting their manufacturing units offshore they are hindering
a company's capacity to innovate. In the end the authors give us different methods that a company
can use to better improve their product line without shifting their manufacturing bases offshore and

To be successful many large scale manufacturing operations must find a keen balance that addresses
the more task–focused needs of the production process as well as the financial planning, oversight
and control requirements of any major modern business organization. As I have mentioned couple of
points in the above section, but here in this critique I will be talking about how sourcing can help a
company to make a decision regarding keeping its manufacturing unit in United states. Modularity
plays an important role in sourcing as we can see from the article, where modularity in product
design can be seen as a way to new product development. Modularity in process design may speed
new product manufacturing setup times, reduce costs, and enhance the profitability of the lower
product volumes. Modular products tend to have fewer components for assembly and are therefore
cheaper to assemble. Modules are created with some aspects of production in mind, however this
modularization is done without understanding the implications of design. Although often yielding
highly functional products, once the manufacturing process is over this unstructured modularization
often leads to costly redesigns or expensive products. Modularity requires maintaining independence
between components and processes in different modules, encouraging

The business environment is also changing so that many of the businesses are becoming innovative
with time. The world economy is concerned about the rise in global warming which occurs as a
result of the carbon IV oxide emission from the fossil fuel. So, it is right to say that Mary T. Barra's
effort to ensure that General Motors produce or manufacture motor vehicles that are environment
friendly and especially the solar vehicles is good for the overall growth of the economy and is in line
with the PESTEL strategic concept of a good business environment. The strategic concept of
providing a pollution free product is in line with the needs of the modern economies where most of
the innovations are going towards clean and renewable energy. There are many reasons why the
motor vehicle industry in the United States of America is going to continue growing under the
President Trump's administration. The first reason is that his political statement supports local
industries as he states clearly that it is an "America First" where the interests of the United States
companies and employees will be given first priority. Accordingly, this would end up in creating a
good working business environment that can be relied on in the long run. The political and
environmental concerns as raised on the PESTLE analysis are very important as they make

Describe the Strategic elements taken by Glenmark to overcome the key challenges faced by the
Pharmaceuticals Industry?
In the United States, due to the reduction in opportunities in generics specifically of small molecule
domain, Glenmark shifted its focus from this domain to mainly respiratory, dermatology and
oncology. Glenmark was also facing challenge from the entry of new companies in the market
which was increasing its competition; hence they identified the strategy of differentiation and started
releasing novel products. Glenmark was noticing that all its competitors were crowding around
United States of America and United Kingdom, moreover these markets of the first world country
were offering a lot of pricing pressure. At the same time they were also facing the challenge of shift
to local manufacturing of generic drugs in the important emerging market. To this, the company
started focusing on its R&D for its specific niche and complex commodities, Glenmark also started
focusing on newer dosage sizes which had lesser competition. The company also increased its New
Molecular Entities pipelines and it also expanded its partnerships in the market to cater to the local
requirements.
Roadmap taken into a innovative research led firm and launch proprietary products by Glenmark?

How Lean Manufacturing Helps Our Economy Essay
Lean manufacturing plays a major role in our economy and yet it is almost unheard of outside
manufacturing. It is important to know lean manufacturing relates to our individual lives and how
we can all benefit from this concept. With current slow economic recovery, it is imperative that we
find avenues that consumers can get through these difficult times, but also to implement the lessons–
learned values into future thinking. The rising cost of goods and the unemployment rate high, lean
manufacturing is helping to keep cost low and jobs in America where they belong.
When we think of process manufacturing or the assembly line many credit Henry Ford for this
concept. The introduction of continuous process in the late 1890's was to produce ... Show more

(Return on Investment) would be used to reinvest in product development and refining
manufacturing processes.
Lean Manufacturing is actually a concept by way of the removal of all waste from any process
associated with expense with the goal of a greater return by introducing additional products or
processes that would be invested for a greater return on every dollar spent. For instance, how much
more groceries can a family purchase if they could get paid for the right purchases made throughout
the month, without sacrificing quality and usefulness.
The concept of Lean Manufacturing was not quickly adopted by the United States manufacturing
companies because of the cost incurred by changing the old manufacturing processes; the perceived
need did not outweigh the benefits. In the 1970's and the1980's manufacturing companies in the
United States took a closer look when Japanese and Chinese companies were selling similar
products as the United States like cars, trucks, electronics, and toy, but at lower cost to the U.S.
consumers. Companies within the United States urgently sought out experts from Japan to
understand this new method due to declining revenues and the realization they were being forced
out of market share. They learned that the concept of Lean Manufacturing was to change the goals
by exposing waste in all areas within the manufacturing process with an increased focus to satisfy

Electronic Industry In The Us Essay
American corporations have found investing in manufacturing overseas to be very economical. The
US has been offshoring manufacturing excessively for the last 20 plus years. Consequently, the
United States has a dilemma: our country imports more goods than it exports, the U.S. is developing
a serious skills gap, and jobs that would boost the domestic economy are being shipped overseas.
The truth is not too many goods are actually "Made in the USA". The United States as a whole is
extremely advanced, innovative, and resourceful. The economy has suffered a Great Depression and
a few recessions; however, we always seem to find our way back to the top and flourish. In the
current aftermath of the recent Great Recession, it is time to review the state of manufacturing in

Twenty years later, when technology is so advanced that it dies within a year and fulfilled with the
next best thing, it would be particularly challenging to alter our practices today and obtain the skills
required to keep up with that sort of trend. Further, the United States would have to start from
scratch, launching massive training programs that offered advanced technology courses. Moving this
type of technology in house and training courses would be expensive. Analyzing the costs so clearly

Research Report On Elon Musk Cofounded Tesla Motors Essay
Elon Musk cofounded Tesla Motors, an American automaker, in 2003 and was among the first
investors of the firm initially investing 7 million dollars and later adding another 30 million United
States dollars (Rothaermrl, & Zimmer, 2014 p.2). Tesla Motors designs and markets electric cars in
the United States. The main competitors of Tesla motors in the United States market are local firms
General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford. Other foreign motor vehicle manufacturers that have entered
and established themselves in the United States and compete with the local firms include are Toyota,
Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, and KIA from various Asiatic countries; and major European
manufacturers including Daimler, BMW, and Volkswagen and its subsidiaries Audi, and Porsche
(Rothaermrl, & Zimmer, 2014 p.4). These foreign automobile manufacturing companies have over
the years eaten into the market share of local firms, which as at the end of 2012 stood below 30
percent because of the quality, and fuel efficiency of these cars and other features.
The automobile market in the United States is currently not very attractive. Firstly, the number of
competing firms in the industry has gone up to more than eleven firms competing in an industry that
has high revenues volatility. Changes in customer tastes and preferences, changes in regulations,
increasing input costs, and other factors contribute to the increases in costs while at the same time

TPP Vs Nafta
After five years of negotiations, the United States and 11 other countries signed the Trans Pacific
partnership. The tpp is a deal that is to promote trade through out nations and will remove tariffs,
promote competition and create more opportunities for businesses. President Barack Obama argued
that tpp will create new jobs by opening up foreign markets for exporting goods and set minimum
standards for working conditions in the 11 other nations, leveling the playing field in the global
market. The tpp is a bad trade deal as it will cost the United states thousands of jobs and hurt the
economy.
TPP is very similar to Nafta which was a free trade deal signed by the Clinton foundation in 1993.
682,000 jobs were lost since Nafta was signed by bill clinton. This shows Nafta was a failure as the
trade deal was supposed to create jobs not lose them. Now TPP is a very similar deal as it's based on
the same concept. As there really isn't many differences, the TPP would be a repeat of the Nafta
trade deal. This causing jobs for the working class citizens of the united states. Nafta proved that
these trade deals are unsuccessful, and TPP is just another free trade deal that will hurt the United
States. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

American jobs as manufacturers are located in other countries. In addition when you importing more
than exporting it hurting the economy as the United states is buying more than selling.

The Trans Pacific Partnership ( Tpp ) And Michael Froman...

  • 1. The Trans Pacific Partnership ( Tpp ) And Michael Froman... Problem Statement: The Trans–Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Michael Froman (United States Trade Representative) need to decide whether it is necessary to reduce tariffs to benefit Americans and the economy or keep the tariffs in order to keep certain manufacturing jobs in the United States. Background: This case represents a prime example in terms of market demand and competition. Nike is one of the world's largest athletic suppliers for a various number sports and other activities. Nike is well established globally and has over a million employees across 42 nations. New Balance has also been in the market a long time since 1906, but not quite as large as what Nike has to offer. "New Balance ranks as the fourth largest athletic footwear and apparel company in the world with $2.4 billion in annual sales" (Assche, 2014). Both companies have been very successful with their products and have an excellent reputation and image. Many consumers are brand loyal to both companies and it will be extremely interesting on what side the TTP takes when it comes down to focusing in on the importance of tariffs. Question 1: With regard to the elimination of import tariffs on Vietnamese footwear, is what is good for Nike Inc. also in America's economic interest? What about New Balance? The elimination of import tariffs on Vietnamese Footwear will not only benefit Nike, but the American economic interest as well. "The United States is the world's largest footwear market valued at $71.7 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although Medtronic has only seen a 1% (Medtronic, 2017) increase in sales from their last reporting in 201, it is still an increase for the company rather than a decrease. The focus on the cardiac devices give Medtronic a great advantage on their competitors. Medtronic also has subsidiary companies under them that also produce medical equipment that will boost their general revenue annually. Covidien is one of the many companies that are a division of Medtronic that will help to increase the annual revenue. A company as large as Medtronic has a large opportunity for international trading. Being that the headquarter is in Dublin, Ireland, this is one advantage to retrieve the same products for a lesser value outside of the United States and receive a higher profit when selling them in the United States at a higher rate. Most of the products are manufactured within the headquarters in Ireland and there are also some products or components of a product purchased from other countries and the finish product is later produced by Medtronic. The opportunity to receive the products internationally is a great advantage for the company to continue their road to success with little to no loss in revenue. These items are usually set at a lower cost outside of the United States with a higher quantity which produce a greater revenue. There is always a demand for medical supplies for ... Free Trade as a Political Tool Outsourcing manufacturing jobs overseas has the additional benefit of promoting capitalism and free enterprise in many countries that have been run by communism and totalitarianism governments. Many political scientists and economists believe that by increasing economic interdependence with the United States, these foreign nations are more likely to develop into robust democracies and more likely to establish a middle class of their own this fact can be used by corporations such as Nike to justify outsourcing to these countries. • 8. Essay on Reconstituting Local Manufacturing Is it possible to reconstitute local manufacturing and local food markets, or has Globalization ultimately made this impossible? The global economy and marketplace have impacted local industry and local manufacturing harshly. With consumers having choices from international companies able to import their products, a common market pool for the whole world, it has become more difficult for the local merchants to thrive. Also, many Western companies have established themselves in developing countries, such as McDonalds and Starbucks, with over 31,000 and 18,000 locations operating worldwide respectively. While the influx of multi national corporations has created economic opportunities for many in the communities that they operate within. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While these foreign investors infuse currency into the local economies, the toll they take on the local markets, may not be worth the tradeoff. Could the local governments be taking or mismanaging the funds? Perhaps the cash infusion could be put to better use to help stabilize or revitalize the local manufacturing and markets. The case could also be made that the concessions that the local governments make to entice international companies into their country make it difficult for or at the least do not address the local manufacturing companies and their concerns. Because of the problems caused for the local manufacturing and food markets, wages and income for the local population also suffers, which influences their purchasing power. This creates a circular effect because without purchasing power the local community cannot support more local manufacturing. This is certainly a way in which globalization has hindered local manufacturing and will make it difficult to reconstitute it in the future. Some of the ideals championed by those who favor globalization will naturally work against the reconstitution of local manufacturing and food markets. For example, the principle of economic advantage commonly referred to as the iron law, demands that the best of the countries that initiate competitive strategies is deemed to outdo other competitors from the market. Currently US economy is strong but with lots of debt. These changes in trade gap and debt were caused basically due to other developing nations coming up with low cost manufacturing system and thus US ended importing products from other countries. Also many US manufacturers moved their factories abroad due to cheap labor and other services. The United States global speculation position soon after World War II was very small. United States resources in 1950 totaled $17.5 billion and investment done outside was $8 billion. • 12. Outsourcing Benefits To understand whether or not outsourcing is beneficial, it is important to have a complete understanding of what it is. Simply stated, outsourcing is a practice employed by some companies in order to reduce cost by transferring work to third–party suppliers rather than keeping the work within the company. The most widely known example of a company which outsources jobs is Apple. Rather than keeping the manufacturing of its products in the United States, Apple chooses to outsource jobs to a third–party, major manufacturer in China called Foxconn, famous for providing the world with iPhones, iPads, and many other Apple products. Because outsourcing transfers a lot of American labor overseas, it is often heavily criticized by a lot of working class Americans. Many see the practice of outsourcing as immoral because companies are sacrificing the welfare of its workers simply to increase profits. The negative effects of outsourcing within the United States can be seen in many industries such as manufacturing, information technology services, research and development, and call centers. Cumulatively, all these industries provide millions of jobs, some well–compensated, to Americans. In the 21st century, however, Americans are increasingly pursuing high–skill employment so some of the low–skill jobs in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There will always be technological advancements that are replacing jobs. For example, automation in the manufacturing industry have replaced people in the workplace. Automation performs much more efficiently than a person performs. In this paper I am going to analyze the effects that automation has caused in the job market and how it will continue to affect various industries. I am also going to compare automation job loss and outsourcing job loss. One multi–tasker bot, from Momentum Machines, can make (and flip) a gourmet hamburger in 10 seconds and could soon replace an entire McDonalds crew. A manufacturing device from Universal Robots doesn't just solder, paint, screw, glue, and grasp, it also builds new parts for itself on the fly when they wear out or bust. And just recently Google won a patent to start building worker robots with personalities. There is a predisposition that robots and automation can do one thing and one thing only. There are currently machines that do many things that would take multiple people to do. In the near future cars may be able to drive themselves and cooking may be completely automated. There is no limit where automation could take us and depending on the perspective you take, its benefiting the world. It is clear by my examples above that automation reduces the amount of labor required to produce a good or service, it produces product more efficiently, and it promotes innovation in all industries. Is automation worth the job loss that it creates? Can jobs be created due to an increase in automation? The United States did indeed lose about 5.6 million manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2010. But according to a study by the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University, 85 percent of these jobs losses are actually attributable to technological change, largely automation, rather than international ... Global Operations And Supply Chain Management Global Operations and Supply Chain Management Competitive Alternatives Survey A company involved in manufacturing medical devices decides to begin sourcing components internationally. As for now, it operates in the United States and Germany only. So, senior management should assess the relative manufacturing costs worldwide to choose where to source. This decision will be made based on manufacturing costs. Cities with the Lowest and Highest Manufacturing Costs The latest Competitive Alternatives survey was published by KPMG in 2016. It is the comparison of more than 100 cities in 10 countries all over the globe. The key finding of the report is that Mexico has the highest relative cost advantage if compared to the United States, and Japan has the lowest (KPMG, 2016). However, the area of interest of this investigation is to determine three cities with the highest and the lowest manufacturing costs for the company's specific industry – medical devices manufacturing. The 2016 report specifies that Monterrey and Mexico City in Mexico offer the lowest prices if taking into consideration facility cost (factory rent). The same is true about utility (electricity and natural gas), labor (salaries, statutory plans, etc.), and transportation (surface and air fright) costs. In general, Mexico is an attractive destination for sourcing because manufacturing costs are almost 22 percent lower than in the United States (Medical devices, 2016). Outsourcing And Re Shoring Production A globalizing economy along with cheap telecommunications technology is making it effortless for countless occupations that were formerly invulnerable to offshoring to be sent overseas. As globalization advances, the off shoring movement is likely to escalate as well. Nonetheless, numerous manufacturing companies such as Caterpillar, Bosh, and Phillips have disclosed that they will return part of their off–shored production to their home countries.(When Manufacturing moves back 1) Throughout this paper I will discuss the politics of offshoring and re–shoring production as well as reflect on globalized production and how these concepts will play out politically. The impact of offshoring is not a new topic in the global business world. Offshoring has matured into a high– profile argument over the last few decades. As a result of offshoring, countries like the United States have exported countless jobs to foreign countries. As technology improves as well as the modernization of countries such as China and India higher numbers of service jobs will be moved offshore (The Next Industrial Revolution.) Although offshoring has delivered enormous economic benefits, it also has created a heavy political toll. Offshoring has led to increased amount of jobs and rising standards of living in for laborers in low–cost countries, rich–world workers have been able to leave the grunt work to someone else, and companies with lower labor cost have brought higher profits. The host of the video interviewed several different companies. Every company he interviewed was an American company that either purchased a new line of manufacturing or moved one of their plants from another country to America. The Mississippi State University speaker stated that America had a net lost 200,000+ a year and is now up that much or a little more a year. Between China and NAFTAAmerican manufacturing has really been distressed. I found the video very interesting. I didn't know that American manufacturing had gotten so competitive with China. I think it would be great to gain some manufacturing jobs in America. New Albany used to be in the biggest furniture making area in the U.S. When NAFTA and China started taking jobs it became a ghost town. Now that jobs are coming back it would be good to see it thriving again. The labor force in New Albany are very skilled in furniture building, so a furniture company would be perfect in that area. I realize that, right or wrong, everything is about a dollar in the end. It has been my experience in the timber and agriculture industry that American made products are much more durable than Chinese products. A lot of their products come out of the box with defects. Customer service has basically went down the drain since the outsourcing of manufacturing as well. The aluminum fan plant mentioned that they were required to have some extent of customer service. That was a big reason the reshored that company to the United States. American workers created a better product and were a lot better at trouble shooting than Chinese workers. • 24. The Impact Of Apple's Global Impact On Apple APPLE'S GLOBAL IMPACT The world's leading software and electronics manufacturer "Apple" has revolutionized business operations in America. Apple's "global ingenuity" (Robbins & Judge, 2013, p. 35) or its ability to use comparative advantages to advance its operations is a game changer. In acknowledging Apple's global stance, we consider the pros and cons for business decisions that propel the company forward, the expansion of its workforce outside of the United States, and the increase of employee diligence and flexibility at manufacturing facilities internationally. PROS AND CONS OF LOCAL AND OVERSEAS LABOR The world economy demands individuals drive innovation. Apple, has nearly 750,000 employees with only 43,000 of them being a part of the American workforce (Robbins & Judge, 2013). Apple discovered that employing skilled workers outside the United States to assemble product hardware would position the company to better meet product demand. Global expansion equips Apple with the ability to meet demand, guarantee its customers a quality and reliable product, which in return generates billions of dollars in revenues annually. Although Apple is flourishing, acquiring overseas labor makes United States workers seem unmotivated and unfit to meet the demands of major companies (Robbins & Judge, 2013). This limits the possibility for American workers to be employed in the world market by other major companies. However, it is inaccurate that American workers are unfit. ... Our country has become much more of an importing company than an exporting one. We consume so many of the goods that countries overseas provide. As a country facing controversy on economic growth it is important to get back to the concept of manufacturing our own goods. Our world now is to globalize everything, especially if it increases our profits and lower our production costs. Introduction to Globalization and Manufacturing Globalization refers to act on trade across other nations. It basically is connecting with other markets to provide the goods. It is to make one's own economic growth and make it global. It takes one business from being locally known to being a worldwide item. Globalization has taken its shift to less developed countries. It has been given less developed countries the chance to be part of the global market. The less developed countries in return provide their services in production at a very low price. Every concept has a goal. In the case of globalization it is primarily meant to take businesses a higher advantage of cutting their operating costs and making more profit. Companies find alternative places that will provide the resources needed to provide the final product. Globalization seems like a sweet deal to many businesses that are trying to take their product worldwide. Many of the people that seem to be affected by this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The savings associated with foreign manufacturing is too much for most companies, including Mattel, to pass up. Everyday more American jobs are outsourced to China because of their ability to manufacture products for significantly less than in the United States. When it comes to manufacturing, China has a comparative advantage, or the ability to produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than another producer (Mankiw, Pg. 55). Not only have companies, such as Mattel, saved billions of dollars over the years, so has the American consumer. It is estimated that, since 1978, consumers in the United States have saved approximately $100 billion by obtaining cheaper products from China (Ahlstrom & Bruton, Pg. 4). It is no wonder jobs are continuously outsourced to other countries. Financially speaking, it seems products manufactured in China benefit everyone, well ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Modularity plays an important role in sourcing as we can see from the article, where modularity in product design can be seen as a way to new product development. Modularity in process design may speed new product manufacturing setup times, reduce costs, and enhance the profitability of the lower product volumes. Modular products tend to have fewer components for assembly and are therefore cheaper to assemble. Modules are created with some aspects of production in mind, however this modularization is done without understanding the implications of design. Although often yielding highly functional products, once the manufacturing process is over this unstructured modularization often leads to costly redesigns or expensive products.
