On way out I fired up the laptop and picked up a free wi–fi connection at the Murtala Muhammad airport, so I kept myself busy for the hour and half
wait for my flight, I can go on and on.
The laptops of today are very powerful so the difference in power between a laptop and desktop is decreasing. If you look at it the other way around, I
would say a laptop has more advantages over a desktop. At leasts in my humble opinion. Re: Advantages Of Desktop Computers Versus Laptops? by
rof–lmao: 3:04am On Mar 26, 2007 SMH @ "more heat = faster performance"! And what has keyboard, mouse, and monitor got to do? You can easily
get your desired ones and plug them into your laptop just like you do your desktop. Battery life is a dodgy claim as well. My laptop runs easily for
3–4hrs on battery and I've watched two full length DVDs back–to–back on battery.
The legitimate advantages of a desktop have already been stated: cheaper, easier to upgrade or replace components, and less appealing to a thief! But
that's price for portability and mobility. The only area desktop owns laptop is advance gaming and other processor intensive applications! Any else
and certainly for the average PC user(i.e 90%+ PC users!) the laptop can do as desktop.
Things are even getting better with laptops: I read that battery capable of running for 8hrs could soon be in the market, Core Duo and Core 2 Duo and

Why Should Buy A New One?
If you are heading to a foreign university to pursue a higher degree, chances are that you have spent a lot of money in getting there, all for the purpose
of graduating with distinction. In that case, having a sturdy, reliable laptop is a must which will be your companion every step of the way till you have
that degree in hand.
'Why buy a new one? What's wrong with my current laptop? It is as good as new,' you'd wonder.
Just a minute! Are you referring to your current laptop which stores all your family and friends picture albums and the collection of '50 movies you
should see before you die'? Not to forget the endless albums with the most amazing music collection you are proud to show off. Is it the same that you
and your parents use to skype chat with your distant relatives?
If the answer to all of the above is yes, then well yeah sure, you better invest in a new one. In the business school, your laptop will mostly be used for
your course related work and there'd be a lot of it, for sure. You need a device that will store everything course related, your assignments, events,
presentations, team projects and one that will never let you down.
Here's a checklist that will be quite helpful in your quest to taking the perfect fit of laptop with you.
Why do I need a laptop? Most universities already have public workstations connected to a reliable and secure wi–fi connection. These are available in
the classrooms, hallways, library and all other common areas. All the

Evaluation On Tablets Vs. Laptops
When looking at technology people look for certain criteria when it comes to evaluating the specific electronic device they want. Tablets in my opinion
are way better than laptops only because they are less bulky; they are thin which makes tablets more versatile, their battery life lasts longer than a laptop
, and ipad tablets have special programs a laptop doesn't obtain. Tablets have advanced over the years. Look at Apple for instance, they came out
with the iPad mini and now they came out with an iPad with a retina display that means that the screen has sufficient pixel density, which means
that the screen is brighter and clearer. Laptops may have a bigger screen but I don't see laptops advancing like tablets do these days. It is quite an
experience if you own an ipad tablet, once you own one you will never want to go back to a laptop. Ipads has a built in Wi–Fi and cellular connectivity
so people can stay in touch easier than they would with a laptop. Laptops have Wi–Fi but not cellular connectivity. They could use cellular connectivity
through skype, but you have to pay to use it. Another cool thing this device has is a multi–touch screen so you can quickly exit and enter into a new
application and it has a virtual keyboard for typing up papers, taking notes, and researching information. One might argue, if they aren't into the high
tech electronics, laptops are more suitable in their scenario because a laptop is simpler. Many, that I've talked to prefer an ipad

Laptops: Why It's A Distraction?
Laptops today has Microsoft. Or google docs. Most schools would like to use them instead of going to the library to use the computers. But the laptops
has some negative effects with it, because it could be a distraction, the money for the laptops would be expensive, and most likely you wouldn't learn
anything.
First thing about why laptops would be bad to have in schools is, it could be a distraction. Today everyone use some type of technology such as phones,
laptops, tablets, or some other things. Why it is a distraction? Well for instance, if you have an assignment, your laptops out, the teacher is lecturing.
While everyone laptops are out, some would take notes, and some would just stare at the screen, so they feel bored then decide to

A brief Introduction on the Laptop Industry of India
Computers
One industry which continues to hold its head high even in an environment of industrial slowdown is information technology (IT) – with annual
growth rates of software value hovering between 20% and 30%. Growth rates for the industry earlier were as high as 40% to 60%. The soft–ware
industry is supported, on the one hand, by the hardware industry – computers, peripherals and components, and on the other, by IT–related services.

The high income segment of consumer household recorded a 21% growth in demand and continued to dominate the market with 55% share in the
overall household segment. The middle level segment registered a 16% growth in sales and accounted for 29% in the segment. Households in the
relatively low income bracket posted a decline in its share. Sales in this segment declined by14%. World computer chip leader, Intel, unveiled a new
processor designed to turn a personal computer into a living room multimedia centre. Intel also announced new ventures with other electronics
producers, including Microsoft and content vendors to give a richer Internet content experience. Intel was expected to launch small, affordable
laptops for students, called 'Eduwise' in the Indian market by earlier of 2008. Eduwise does not have a hard drive. It has a flash memory and can be
networked through the Internet and through wired or wireless network. Eduwise is expected to cost less than USD 400. Intel, which invested USD
700 mn in India over the past few years, has plans to invest over a in India towards R&D and other investments.
Apple is expected to unveil the first Mac–based on Intel processors. Apple recently added some Media Centre–like capabilities to its iMac line with a
programme, called Front Row. Big Apple Manufacturing has sold about 1300 computers priced at around Rs 7000 in about nine months. All the

Laptops In Class Are Distracting America's Future...
The article written by Timothy D. Snyder in 2010 titled, "Why Laptops in Class Are Distracting America's Future Workforce" is a persuasive
article. His purpose in writing this article was to persuade professors to ban laptops in the classroom because he feels they are a distraction. Snyder's
arguments against the use of laptops in classrooms are convincing, but he lacks evidence to support his stance and he uses emotionally charge
wording to sway the reader. One required element of persuasive writing is the element of clearly defined terms. Snyder discusses various online
activities students engage in during class, such as making travel plans, reading the newspaper, or following the pennant race, which is defined as the
last few weeks of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One way Snyder does not use logical reasoning is the fact that he uses emotionally charged words. Snyder uses a variety of emotionally charged
words in his article, both positive and negative. The positively charged words help sway the reader towards his point of view, while the negatively
charged words puts a negative connotation towards the opposing point of view. Snyder states, "Meanwhile, we are losing a long tradition of people
learning from other people" (166). Traditions are very special and are passed down generations. Losing these traditions is very disheartening.
Therefore, the use of the word losing has a very negative emotional effect on a reader's attitudes towards the possible loss of learning happening with
laptops present. Another element of logical reasoning is making hasty generalizations. Snyder states, "I would not have the attention of these very
gifted students if I did not ban laptops and smartphones from my classroom" (165). This is an example of a hasty generalization. He is attributing their
attention loss to laptops, not giving thought that even without computers, other factors may play a role in attention loss. Students daydreaming or deep
in thought, planning their day would also be a barrier to keeping their

Laptop And Tablet Computers : Computers
Computers are ubiquitously in the world today, used by practically everyone; it is a device that a majority of people cannot live without. Used by all,
the young, the elderly, for work or just for entertainment. In today's world they are two different types of computers that are really popular, they are:
laptop and tablet computers. While both shares exceptionally close similarities like portability and both are capable of doing about the same task
with inadequate limitations. In a day to day operation they are fairly different. The major difference lies within their uses, laptops are mainly used as
a compact portable desktop, while tablets are used mainly for entertainment or amusement purposes. No one really knows what the future holds, but
at the pace that technology is growing, that line is now becoming blurred and I 'm guessing that in the future there is not going to be a comparison
between the two. One of the most important distinctions between the two is that of suitability, laptops are used for more of the serious work, and
while tablets are also capable of doing the same; they are not generally used for the same purposes. Laptops are predominantly used when writing a
paper or article doing a presentation, writing programs, or browsing the internet. A laptop is capable, in the sense of power, speed and convenience.
Whereas tablets on the other hand is predominantly used at home for browsing the internet, app gaming, listening to music or reading a book. Electing

Sana, Weston, & Cepeda (2013), Laptop multitasking hinders learning for both users and nearby peers. Computers & Education 62 (2013): 24–31.
Question: When referring to the article by Sana, Weston, & Cepeda (2013), the reader will find both a specific and broad question. The broad question
being asked is whether or not memory retention is hindered by multitasking. The specific questions being asked are whether or not students who use
laptops to multitask in class experience lower levels of information retention and if the multitasking of some students negatively effects the memory
retention of their surrounding peers.
Alternative: This study has one of four alternatives: multitasking could have no effect on learning in all circumstances, it could only have an ... Show

Logic: If, in all circumstances, multitasking does not impact memory, then test scores will not be affected by laptop use in class. If direct multitasking
affects memory then test scores will be lower in experiment 1. If indirect multitasking effects memory then test scores will be lower in experiment 2.
Method: In Experiment 1, 44 undergraduate university students were chosen to participate in an introductory psychology course lecture accompanied
by a questionnaire. Only students with access to a personal laptop were asked to join. Based on a screening process, four participants were removed
from the study. The experiment was carried out in a classroom setting under the condition that participants had no prior knowledge or other
disqualifying qualities. The materials used were a power point lecture, a multiple choice test, laptops, instructions for multitasking, a consent form, and
a questionnaire. They were randomly seated and received a set of instructions as well as a consent form. Students were asked to take notes while
listening to the lecture. Half of the participants were asked to complete 12 online tasks

Should Laptops Be Allowed In Schools
Laptops and computers have always made learning easier but will they make learning easier for students in school? Some schools are now using
laptops instead of textbooks for their students. Schools should be using laptops instead of textbooks because laptops have many benefits over using
textbooks. Laptops and computers are being used for students in school to make learning easier. Students may now carry Laptops instead of heavy
textbooks. There are much cheaper options now than before. Since 2011 Google has offered small Laptops called chromebooks that cost much less
than a traditional Laptop. The chromebooks also offer software from Google that can be used for school work. Students can write docs or make slides
for a presentation and it is all at no cost. Other Laptops may be required to purchase the software or purchase a license just to use the software. In 2016
researcher Mark Warschauer reported that students participating in K–12 one to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Laptops can cost money and the schools would have to pay. Laptops at retail price could cost about $300. If a Laptop breaks the school would have to
pay to repair it and the school would also have to get a replaced for the student. Textbooks are much more durable and may outlast a traditional
Laptop. A Laptop may also be used by a student to cheat on homework or on a quiz. This can lead to many problems because if the student has
access to all the answers he or she will not learn. They will just look up everything on the Laptop. This can all be prevented by monitoring what the
student searches and how long they are on a website for. The school could also limit or block what websites the students can access. This would
prevent a student getting on or downloading inappropriate files from the internet. Students should have Laptops at school but they should be limited.
They should only be able to get on the things that they would use for homework or for school

In Defense Of Laptops In The Classroom Summary
The article "In Defence of Laptops in the Classroom" by Rebecca Schuman, a university professor, offers a different perspective to the banning of
laptops in academics. She argues that while it might be distracting, it is ultimately the student's own attitude towards education that dictates the
effectiveness of electronics in the classroom.
As the title suggests, Schuman argues that laptops have a place in the modern day classroom. She emphasises how the current generation lives in an
age that "doesn't learn to write by hand" (5) and argues that it is impossible to separate technology from learning. Rather than to disregard it, Schuman
suggests changing the way in which lessons are conducted, with less of an "impersonal pedagogical" approach, ... Show more content on

She argues that "policing the behaviour of students further infantilizes these 18–to–22–year–olds" (6). Rather than banning the laptop, she uses it as a
challenge to develop students to become more independent learners. She presents the opinion that one "learn(s) all kinds of things the hard way in
college" (10). She presents the distractions of the laptop as an obstacle that students should learn to overcome on their own terms rather than forcibly, in
order to further benefit them in the future. She brings up the idea of "responsibility" (10), one that is taught through actual experience instead of a
textbook. Throughout the article, Schuman does not back away from the fact that "the case for a laptop–free classroom is indeed strong" (3), even
going as far as to include studies and evidence that support the detriments of the laptop. The emphasis on the challenges posed highlights the initiative
that she wishes to impart by relaxing control on students. The stress on self creates awareness as to how students are often treated with differing
attitudes, as "13th–graders", children, in the classroom, yet expected to make decisions of importance, "old enough to vote and go to war" (7). In
giving students the freedom, she wishes to develop and hone their decision–making

Computers : Laptop Vs. Desktop
Student Computers: Laptop vs. Desktop
Today most individuals would consider a computer an essential tool of their everyday lives. In particular, students must become very familiar with
computers in order accomplish various tasks necessary for their classes. The two basic forms of computers that most students will use are the laptop and
the desktop. For college students, choosing between them can be a difficult and confusing task. Students must ensure that their device will provide the
functionality they need for their intended uses. Laptops and desktops both have their strengths and weaknesses; college students will need to select a
device that best serves their needs in areas of processing power, mobility, cost, and functionality.
Sufficient processing power is a necessity of any computer. If a student chooses a device that cannot perform adequately in the appropriate areas,
that device is essentially useless. For most students, a powerful central processing unit, or CPU, will be a must. Laptop computers generally offer a
very similar arrangement of CPU's as desktops. However, due to the power constraints of mobile computers, these processors are still less powerful
than their desktop counterparts. Because desktops do not rely on battery power, they can utilize more powerful processing components. Basic laptop
processors are perfect for simple tasks, but students needing to accomplish demanding tasks such as video editing will appreciate the added processing
capabilities

Laptops : The Negative Effects Of Computers In The Classroom
Technology is constantly improving and children are being introduced to it at younger ages. These innovations have led to the integration of laptops
in schools. Laptops and other personal devices are quickly becoming a staple in many classrooms. Although many people support laptops in the
classrooms and claim they are beneficial, laptops have an overall negative effect on classrooms. Computers in the classroom have brought some
benefits. According to Efaw et al., "Since students can easily submit their assignments and have them shown on screen, instructors can cover more
assignments in class" (155). Using online programs related to class content can help motivate the students to work (Efaw et al. 155). Additionally,
with the current advances in technology, laptops are becoming more affordable and accessible (Wood et al. 1). Furthermore, laptops in the classroom
can help students learn to use the tools provided by their computers that they may use in their future careers (Efaw at al. 155). In spite of those
benefits, laptops have proved to be problematic. Students are likely to engage in negative multitasking and distracting behaviours. Students are
introduced to technology early on, which allows them to face a great amount of information and comprehend it quickly. This is problematic in
classrooms, especially in lecture based classes where students are likely to become bored, which encourages distraction (McGaugh 163). Also, it was
found that people that were

How To Find The Best Laptops For Under $600
What Can A Laptop Do For Me?
Laptops are for everyone these days, they have several advantages over the tablet or cell phone. The first advantage is simple, the screen is larger on
a laptop. This may not seem important for everyone, but for those suffering with vision loss it can be the key to accessing the internet and performing
basic tasks. The consumer must be careful about screen size, because most of a laptop 's weight comes from the screen. If you plan on using one
primarily at home, then this is not a concern, however it can become an issue for those who travel and need a laptop for business purposes.
Another advantage is that a laptop is portability, this can make or break the person who must regularly travel, and needs a computer that can go with
them. Such people often have tasks that include accessing the internet for business purposes, document creating, and networking, while some mobile
devices can do similar tasks, the laptop is more powerful and for many easier to use.

Surface Book is a tablet–laptop device that is well designed and created by Microsoft Surface, part of the Microsoft Enterprise. Surface Book is
outstanding from different surfaces mostly because of its separable Keyboard, which is made of a dynamic fulcrum hinge. The keyboard carries a

Microsoft announced the creation of Surface Book on October 6, 2015, at Windows 10 Devices Event. Panos Panay, the vice president of Surface
Computing, announced this device as being a laptop that is going to compete with the with the MacBook Pro of the Apple Corporation. They also

Surface Book, according to Microsoft.com, consists of a screen with a 13.5 inches (34 cm), and 3000x2000 resolution that allows this device work like
other laptops. It also has a detachable keyboard that allows Surface Book to function both as laptop and a tablet. To reach this purpose, Microsoft
constructed the hinge by nickel titanium. Nickel titanium contracts to electrical current, therefore pressing the release button can separate the hinge

Apple vs Dell
BACKGROUND
On January 24, 1984 Apple introduced the first commercially successful personal computer using a mouse and a graphical user interface[i].Since
then the war between PC and Mac users has lived. Claims have been made that Apple is too expensive and PC's are too slow and of cheap quality.
After the introduction of Microsoft's Windows in 1985 the PC market has been dominated due to Microsoft's Windows operating system[ii]. The
domination of the market is largely due to the flexibility of Windows. Microsoft developed their operating system to be compatible with any hardware
created by any computer company such as Dell, HP, Sony, IBM, etc. Consequently, Apple's operating system only worked with Apple's proprietary
hardware. With the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When asked how these consumers acquired their laptops, 69% stated they purchased it, 11% stated that their parents purchased it, 8% stated that they
received it as a gift, 8% stated that their jobs provided it, and 4% other.
Using the rating system previously described, we asked consumers to rate their laptops if they are a great value for the price. Dell's overall average
was a 5.2 while Apple's overall average was a 4.3. One thing that stood out to us was that Apple owners rated Apple laptops a 5.4 when the rest of the
consumers rated them a 3.8. This leads us to believe that owning an Apple laptop may make you believe that it is a great value for its price.
On the next question, we asked consumers to rate their laptops on a uniqueness and design. Here, Apple blew away Dell with an overall rating of 6.3
compared to Dell's 3.9. Perhaps this could be a reason why Apple laptops appeal to consumers that seek a "cool looking" laptop.
When asked if their laptops provide them with everything they need, both Dell and Apple scored well with a 5.2 and 5.5 overall rating respectively.
Since the ratings here are so similar, we cannot conclude that this factor has any effect on consumer's switching between brands.
Reliability was another characteristic that we asked about in our survey. In this, Apple received a much higher overall rating than Dell, receiving a
rating of 6.0 vs Dell's 4.8. However, if you look at the rating Dell owners gave for Dell laptops,

Portable PC – The Laptop Market Laptops, also known as notebook computers, are personal computers which are deisnged to be portable, while
keeping similar functions as desktops. The first laptop, Osborne 1, was an 11 kg laptop with 5 inch screen, released in 1981 by the Osborne Computer
Corporation (History). Since 1981, the laptop industry have experienced a rapid growth, now becoming one of the 'key industries' of the modern
society (Chen). This paper investigates the current laptop market by analyzing different companies, including Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus,
which are the top 5 vendors of the market, along with one extra company, Microsoft, to find out the current status of the laptop industry, and its future.
To make the comparing process more simple, this paper will focus on one laptop from each companies, with similar specifications. Apple, referred as
one of the most innovative companies in the 21st century, was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in 1976 (Rawlinson). They
have entered the laptop market in 1989 with the product named 'Macintosh Portable'. As of November 2016, the Apple Inc. (AAPL) has the greatest

Should Laptops Be Allowed In The Classroom
The Tools They Use: Should Laptops Be Allowed In the Classroom? In today's classrooms, laptops are becoming more and more prevalent. Their use
has been fervently debated, with some teachers in support of allowing students unrestricted access to their laptops and some in support of banning
them completely. With restrictions for classes such as mathematics or science, laptops should be allowed in other classroom settings because they
allow students to take thorough notes and to jot down more of the lecture. Several arguments are presented by those in favor of banning laptops in the
classroom, and many of them are echoed. In a New Yorker article by Dan Rockmore, "The Case for Banning Laptops In the Classroom," Rockmore
claims that students who take long–hand notes instead of taking notes on their laptops retain the information better and are less distracted than those
with unfettered internet access (Rockmore para. 7). He states that taking long–hand notes helps students integrate the information and creates deeper
modes of recall (Rockmore para. 7). Rockmore cites studies from universities like Cornell and Princeton to support his assertions (Rockmore para. 5,
7). Aside from shallow note–retention, he implies that laptops can be distracting to students because they are portals for socialization and entertainment
(Rockmore para. 9). National Public Radio's James Doubek shares similar arguments. In his article, "Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away," he
brings up the

Should Laptops Be Banned?
"Can you repeat the question, please?" this phrase is being said more often in classrooms all around the country. Why do students feel the need to use
laptops in the classroom? Students should focus more on their teachers instead of non–academic programs on the laptop. The distractions from laptops
can also distract other students around them. When students are surfing the internet in class, as an instructor, they find it highly disrespectful because of
the impression you are giving off is like "you're boring me." Laptops should be banned from the classroom to avoid distractions. Laptops are your own
personal, portable computer. They are often lightweight and quickly accessible to use. They are great and efficient way to surf the net when you are
on the go. They can be quite helpful for a busy college student who are trying to focus on a career. Laptops are also revolutionizing the way we write
and communicate to others. Just by simply creating an email address on a web server (such as yahoo or google) you can send emails to anyone who
has a device with internet access. Emailing makes it easy to communicate with one another from long distances. If a student ever ran into any issues
involving academics they can just email their professors. In our day and age, we have utilized and constructed a way that we can communicate to an
audience on our social media websites. This way we can interact with friends, family, classmates, and associates. In the article "20 simple ways to

What is brand personality?
As defined by Aaker (1997), brand personality refers to the set of human characteristics associated with a brand. Aaker assumes that the brands are the
same with the human personality or character, and the brand personality is created when a consumer attached his or her personality–like character to a
specific brand. According to Hawkins, et al (2001), brand personality can be considered as "what type of person the brand would be if it were human
and what it would do and like".

Brand as a person/symbolic use
As suggested by Aaker (1997), brand personality is created in the perspective of brand as a person. It has the same concept with Hawkins, Best, and

ntroduction
A brand is what differentiates one's product from those of the competitors. In a market where there is not much product differentiation it's the brand
name that drives the business for the company. Laptop Industry in India is no different. Today Laptop industry is proliferated by many brands but
almost 70% of the market is shared among HP, Dell & Lenovo. So what makes these brands tick? If you see a decade ago these brands were not so
popular. While many brands have come up in recent past many have lost their value and have faded away.
Compaq was one such brand. It was a well–known brand once but has faded away in the face of rising & stiffing competition.

Also the design or the Aesthetics aspect was very poor and so was the customer service. The Technology of thelaptop was also outdated. All these
factors contributed to the downfall of Compaq brand.
Segmentation Analysis
The laptop industry could be categorized in to two segments. Consumer segment & Commercial Segment. Compaq in 2000's focused on both the
segments. But rise of Dell, Lenovo forced Compaq to shift its focus on consumer segment. HP was also targeting the same segment. So Compaq was
concentrated on the lower income group of the consumer segment.
Compaq therefore was targeted mainly towards the college going students. But this group was a group where performance, aesthetics as well as
technology was of the utmost importance. From the survey it was observed that the Age Group 20–30 years have rated Compaq bad in terms of Style

The Best Laptops For College Students
Today, the world has the technology to reinvent the learning process as well as the school process. Everyday students lug 20 pound backpacks to
school carrying everything from notebooks and binders to textbooks. Throughout the day students must carry this weight around, which can cause back
issues in the future. All that dead weight could be replaced by a single device, a notebook personal computer(PC). The average PC "can weigh as little
as 1.25 pounds" according to Dennis McCafferty in Computers In The Classroom –– Want to learn the abc 's of the mobile computing space? and can
carry enormous amounts of data. There are many forms of notebook computers, Laarni Ragaza provides a well developed review of different computers
and how they work with educational services in her article "The Best Laptops for College Students." Integrating PC's into the school program will
allow students to directly connect with their teachers, assignments, textbooks, and notes all on one device, in a much more efficient and organized
manner. This negates the need for the cluttered backpacks and lockers students have to scramble through to find their assignments. Having PCS on
hand will allow students and teachers to connect instantaneously to transfer assignments and go over lesson plans. The PC's will also enable students to
connect to the internet, allowing them to further research the topic at hand. With PCs students can have a more immersive and orderly learning
environment. PC's should replace

Compare And Contrast Laptops
Two of the most used computing devices today are laptops and tablets. Laptop means a portable microcomputer having its main components (as
processor, keyboard, and display screen) integrated into a single unit capable of battery–powered operation (Merriam–Webster). Tablet is defined by
Merriam–Webster as a mobile computing device that has a flat, rectangular form like that of a magazine or pad of paper, that is usually controlled by
means of a touch screen, and that is typically used for accessing the Internet, watching videos, reading electronic books, etc. Laptops and tablets are two
different kinds of computers with laptops being suitable for productivity and tablets being appropriate for consumption (Smith). As technology becomes

Film makers need a large display which can give a lot of workspace; a faster clock speed of the CPU; and the dedicated graphic cards to work on
high–definition video. Even though iPads can strugglingly do some photo editing, working on a PC is, for the most part, easier and more
pleasurable (Smith). Applications explicitly designed for mobile devices like tablets are not as powerful as their desktops' counterparts; also, with
the current hardware giving tablets accesses to laptops' software are impractical (Bourque). According to what is mentioned earlier, serious gaming
is another field where laptops' powers are necessary. In addition, according to the definitions given in the introduction, tablets are not supposed to
have these accessories. Since a tablet is defined as a device which "is usually controlled by means of a touch screen," and one of the main parts of
laptops is a "physical" keyboard, using one with a tablet alters the definitions. According to DataXoom, one advantage which tablets have over laptops
is that they are more portable, so using accessories with a tablet ruins the benefit, not to mention that it is unreasonable why one who longs for
portability would carry many pieces of machines at once. Compared to what a laptop is capable of, a tablet is already an expensive device; therefore,
paying more for the same experience is not very sensible.
In conclusion, Tablets are really great machines, however they cannot replace laptops effectively. The main reasons which make tablets disqualified
are the lack of effective physical keyboards and the little power when compared to laptops. When it comes to this, it is not the question of what is
better, it is the question of what is more

The encoding hypothesis says that writing helps to encode the information better. The external–storage hypothesis suggests that by writing down the
information is helpful because you can review it later, therefore increasing retention. Even though, there has been a mix of results in these hypotheses it
is certain to say that the use of these two hypotheses together can help improve the academic performance. Other research suggests that note taking can
be generative (in our own words) and non–generative (word for word). Verbatim note taking tends to lower our cognitive process. The deeper the
information is processed and encoded the better the comprehension and retention of the information and better it is for encoding. The research has
shown that people who take verbatim notes show a lower academic performance than those who use non–verbatim notes.
In the article were three studies conducted to answer two questions "whether taking notes on a laptop versus writing long–hand notes affects academic
performance and to explore the potential mechanism of verbatim overlap as a proxy for depth of processing".

Persuasive Essay On Laptops In Education
In today's day and age, technology surrounds us while we indulge in it. Technology is slowly taking away the traditional methods of learning while we
adapt to the contemporary methods. High Schools now provide laptops for the students to use throughout the school year for note taking and research.
Although typing notes is fast and simple on a laptop, writing the notes forces you to slow down and address the vital information. To start off, using a
laptop in class will prevent you from learning. Many people that use laptops in class to take notes are easily distracted by the worldwide web or
social media. There was a survey that was taken weekly for 10 weeks that revealed what the students were doing on their laptops during class. A
majority (64%) of the respondents reported using their laptops during at least one class session. They reported using their laptops to take course notes
(83.3%), send email (81%), send and receive instant messages (68%), surf the internet (43%), and play games (25%). An additional 35% reported using
their laptops on "other" non–course–related activities (Fisher). This study showed that the vast majority of people that used their laptop didn't not just
take notes, they also used it to browse the worldwide web. Some of those students that used their laptop to take "notes" didn't even take notes. There
was another study by Fried, said that there was a "significant, negative relationship between in–class laptop use and course grade" (Fried). There

Fried also found that students who used laptops in class spent considerable time multitasking and that the level of laptop use was negatively related to
overall course performance. Methodological There are at least four issues with respect to methods used to evaluate the use of laptops in higher education
. First, the predominant method of data collection is the case study. While this approach offers guidance and advice on best practices for using laptops,
the reliability and validity of the data have yet to be confirmed for the general population. Second, some studies have employed quasi–experimental
methods to evaluate the impact of laptops on student achievement. These studies do not offer data on how laptops are actually used in higher education
classrooms.
Third, a number of studies involve students who were not provided equal access to technology. Motiwalla's paper on using handheld devices in class
is innovative, yet it is not truly indicative of the benefits and drawbacks of mobile learning because many of the students in the sample did not have
devices equipped with the technology essential to participate in the study. Finally, the majority of studies offered no reliability or validity estimates for
the measures used to assess laptop behavior while the data from these studies offers useful suggestions regarding laptop use.

The laptop market is a thoroughly saturated one. The range of uses of a laptop today is quite diverse. The low–end being the Chromebook and
netbooks, an ultra–light and ultra–portable PC. These devices are used for surfing the web and some light word processing. Then we have the
high–end, being the enthusiast laptops; Asus ROG and MSI have cornered the market in this group. They are not so portable and are generally heavier
machines, but are the best of the best for on the go hardcore performance. This laptop, the Eluktronics P670RP, was designed for the top of that

The company's home page is a hodge–podge of poor layout and an unattractively designed logo. When compare to Asus, a much more established
company, they pale in comparison. The color theme of the logo is a quite dismal looking yellow and black. One could safely assume they don't expect
many consumers to visit the site based solely on this poor presentation. There is no excuse for any company, whose best–selling product comes in just
under a thousand dollars, to have such a disappointing website. Even still amongst the amalgamation of gray and light gray, there is a reprieve. Their
products are well organized on the site and rightfully so; they had to get it right somewhere. They offer a fairly large range of laptops for different
budgets. Among their proprietary offerings, they have some third party products as well. One might think this may be the path chosen to obtain the
capital for the Deleware–based company in a market so thoroughly glutted with overseas based companies. It begs the question, however, if more
time and resources were spent on presentation and advertising would they not show better sales? When searching for a laptop a decision must be
made on the use case. This decision will be directly related to the components needed for the laptop. Someone looking to just browse the internet need

The reduced degree of customization indicates that production and assembly strategies may have to be changed from the one used for desktops in
order to make the laptop manufacturing successful. As the demand for portable computers was growing Dell 's competitors (IBM, Compaq, Apple)
were already gaining a great share of the market. Dell also needs to consider how to convince former customers to buy the improved computers.
Furthermore, it is crucial for the company to decide between implementing the direct distribution strategy or the retail channel. All together these issues
led to one main concern В– how to make the entering into laptop market successful?
The goal of entering the laptop market is to expand the company and to offer customers the high–quality customized computers they want at a
competitive price, as quickly as possible and backed by great service. In order to reach these goals Dell needs to gain advantage in production cost and
to select an effective distribution channel. The drawbacks that makes this situation difficult is the bad past experience and the need of new educated
employees in service and manufacturing sectors, as well as the need for new suppliers. The distribution question is also essential, because many small
office and home buyers prefer purchasing through the retail channel where they can see and touch the product, whereas Dell communicates with
customers directly through the Internet.

Why Is It Better To Purchase A Laptop Or Epektop?
Some years ago, buying a computer was considered by many to be a very frightening task. For one, personal computing was advanced technology that

technology has exceeded most people's expectations. Still, even today, computer shoppers need to know what their options are. One of the biggest

Laptops In The Classroom Summary
"In Defense of Laptops in the Classroom" by Rebecca Schuman is an article that aims to put across a point that the attitude of the students in class is a
decision for the students to make. She states that being a "Laptop Police" (Para 2) – played by the professors – can be helpful to the students in
learning but it is also stopping the students from making their own decisions when it comes to the attitude of learning. Schuman had presented her
article in a positive stand where she does not disagree with other professors' idea of banning laptops in class to improve learning. Instead, she is trying
to convince us that the professors' decisions will not make a significant change in the attitude of the students. She states a point where the attitude of the
students is entirely "their responsibility" (Para 10). The author had not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She made use of the various studies that had been conducted on students (eg. Cornell, 2003 and Fred, 2006) to meet eye–to–eye in accepting that it has
been an ongoing debate to ban laptops. However, she gave examples that make us think and accept that banning laptops is not the only way. Her
usage of her own experience as a professor conducting classes using the laptops for "regularly planned activities" (Para 9) showed the positive use of
laptops in class. She also described "teaching a 13th–grade classroom" (Para 7) as a college class. It is hard to imagine that college students will still
act like children that do not think for themselves. She convinces us with the example of having a "smaller seminar where their presence actually
registers and matters" (Para 8) that social conformity may play a huge part in changing the attitudes of students when it comes to learning. Schuman
last used the example of a working adult to showcase the hard fact of life that attitudes are decided by ourselves – in this article, the

The Modern PC Is a Model Of Hyper–efficient Production And Geopolitical Sensitivities
By JASON DEAN and PUI–WING TAM, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, June 9, 2005
When a customer in the U.S. clicks on Hewlett–Packard Co. 's Web site to purchase one of its Pavilion zd8000 laptop computers, the order quickly
arrives thousands of miles away at a factory in China run by a less–familiar name, Quanta Computer Inc.
Although virtually unknown to consumers, Quanta is the world 's biggest maker of laptops. As part of a sometimes–difficult symbiosis, the Taiwanese

Quanta made nearly a quarter of the roughly 49 million notebooks shipped last year –– a share the company expects to grow to a third this year.
Including smaller rivals like Compal Electronics Inc., Inventec Corp. and Wistron Corp., Taiwanese concerns now produce as much as 80% of the
world 's laptops.

Outsourcing to low–cost, high–quality Taiwanese manufacturers has helped make Dell and H–P the world 's top two PC companies in terms of sales.
International Business Machines Corp., which outsourced less than half of its laptop production, according to Merrill Lynch, and operated its own
factory in China, consistently lost money on its PCs. It sold the business this year to China 's Lenovo Group Ltd., which has used Taiwanese companies
to make most of its notebooks in China.
But the relationship between U.S. computer firms and their third–party manufacturers can be tricky. In the struggle to retain an element of control over
their suppliers, H–P, Dell and others play contract manufacturers against each other to keep prices falling and ensure no supplier gains too much
leverage.
Roger Bahalla, director of H–P 's laptop supply–chain strategy, says H–P typically works with a half–dozen third–party manufacturers at any one time.
"It 's a way to keep the business competitive," says Mr. Bahalla, who adds that 98% of H–P 's notebooks are made in China. "There 's an optimal

Should Computers Be Allowed in the Classroom
Introduction
Today, professors at colleges all around the country are asking the same question. They are wondering whether laptops in the college classroom
actually facilitates a student's ability to learn or rather it distracts them from the lesson being taught. Laptops were originally considered to be "a small
niche market" and were thought suitable mostly for specialized field applications such as the military, the Internal Revenue Service, accountants and
sales representatives. But today, there are already more laptops than desktops in businesses, and laptops are becoming obligatory for student use and
more popular for general use.
The conflict lies in that a majority of college professors believe that allowing students to use laptop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* Ease of Access– Most laptops have doors on the underside that allow the user to access the memory, hard drive and other components, by simply
flipping the laptop to access the doors. This makes laptop repair and troubleshooting far easier, and less expensive than most would think. * Low Power
Consumption– A typical laptop uses 20–90 W, compared to 100–800 W for desktops. This could be particularly beneficial for colleges which run
hundreds of personal computers, multiplying the potential savings. * Quiet– Laptops are often very quiet because they produce less heat and therefore
require fewer and slower cooling fans making them less of a distraction in the classroom environment. * Battery– a charged laptop can run several hours
in case of a power outage and is not affected by short power interruptions and brownouts. * All–in–One– designed to be portable, laptops have
everything integrated in to the chassis.
Disadvantages:
* Cost– Even though laptops provide less performance than desktop computers, they tend to be far more expensive due to its more compact and
complex design. * Performance– Laptops are not only significantly more expensive than desktop computers, but they do so at a lower performance
level. Laptops as a result are disadvantaged when dealing with database, math, engineering, and financial software. * Upgradeability– Laptops have
very few upgradeable components and are typically limited to the

Re: Advantages Of Desktop Computers Versus Laptops? by Seun(m):... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On way out I fired up the laptop and picked up a free wi–fi connection at the Murtala Muhammad airport, so I kept myself busy for the hour and half wait for my flight, I can go on and on. The laptops of today are very powerful so the difference in power between a laptop and desktop is decreasing. If you look at it the other way around, I would say a laptop has more advantages over a desktop. At leasts in my humble opinion. Re: Advantages Of Desktop Computers Versus Laptops? by rof–lmao: 3:04am On Mar 26, 2007 SMH @ "more heat = faster performance"! And what has keyboard, mouse, and monitor got to do? You can easily get your desired ones and plug them into your laptop just like you do your desktop. Battery life is a dodgy claim as well. My laptop runs easily for 3–4hrs on battery and I've watched two full length DVDs back–to–back on battery. The legitimate advantages of a desktop have already been stated: cheaper, easier to upgrade or replace components, and less appealing to a thief! But that's price for portability and mobility. The only area desktop owns laptop is advance gaming and other processor intensive applications! Any else and certainly for the average PC user(i.e 90%+ PC users!) the laptop can do as desktop.

  • 3. Why Should Buy A New One? If you are heading to a foreign university to pursue a higher degree, chances are that you have spent a lot of money in getting there, all for the purpose of graduating with distinction. In that case, having a sturdy, reliable laptop is a must which will be your companion every step of the way till you have that degree in hand. 'Why buy a new one? What's wrong with my current laptop? It is as good as new,' you'd wonder. Just a minute! Are you referring to your current laptop which stores all your family and friends picture albums and the collection of '50 movies you should see before you die'? Not to forget the endless albums with the most amazing music collection you are proud to show off. Is it the same that you and your parents use to skype chat with your distant relatives? If the answer to all of the above is yes, then well yeah sure, you better invest in a new one. In the business school, your laptop will mostly be used for your course related work and there'd be a lot of it, for sure. You need a device that will store everything course related, your assignments, events, presentations, team projects and one that will never let you down. Here's a checklist that will be quite helpful in your quest to taking the perfect fit of laptop with you. Why do I need a laptop? Most universities already have public workstations connected to a reliable and secure wi–fi connection. These are available in the classrooms, hallways, library and all other common areas. • 4. Evaluation On Tablets Vs. Laptops When looking at technology people look for certain criteria when it comes to evaluating the specific electronic device they want. Tablets in my opinion are way better than laptops only because they are less bulky; they are thin which makes tablets more versatile, their battery life lasts longer than a laptop , and ipad tablets have special programs a laptop doesn't obtain. Tablets have advanced over the years. Look at Apple for instance, they came out with the iPad mini and now they came out with an iPad with a retina display that means that the screen has sufficient pixel density, which means that the screen is brighter and clearer. Laptops may have a bigger screen but I don't see laptops advancing like tablets do these days. It is quite an experience if you own an ipad tablet, once you own one you will never want to go back to a laptop. Ipads has a built in Wi–Fi and cellular connectivity so people can stay in touch easier than they would with a laptop. Laptops have Wi–Fi but not cellular connectivity. They could use cellular connectivity through skype, but you have to pay to use it. Another cool thing this device has is a multi–touch screen so you can quickly exit and enter into a new application and it has a virtual keyboard for typing up papers, taking notes, and researching information. One might argue, if they aren't into the high tech electronics, laptops are more suitable in their scenario because a laptop is simpler. Many, that I've talked to prefer an ipad ... • 10. Laptops In Class Are Distracting America's Future... The article written by Timothy D. Snyder in 2010 titled, "Why Laptops in Class Are Distracting America's Future Workforce" is a persuasive article. His purpose in writing this article was to persuade professors to ban laptops in the classroom because he feels they are a distraction. Snyder's arguments against the use of laptops in classrooms are convincing, but he lacks evidence to support his stance and he uses emotionally charge wording to sway the reader. One required element of persuasive writing is the element of clearly defined terms. Snyder discusses various online activities students engage in during class, such as making travel plans, reading the newspaper, or following the pennant race, which is defined as the last few weeks of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One way Snyder does not use logical reasoning is the fact that he uses emotionally charged words. Snyder uses a variety of emotionally charged words in his article, both positive and negative. The positively charged words help sway the reader towards his point of view, while the negatively charged words puts a negative connotation towards the opposing point of view. Snyder states, "Meanwhile, we are losing a long tradition of people learning from other people" (166). Traditions are very special and are passed down generations. Losing these traditions is very disheartening. Therefore, the use of the word losing has a very negative emotional effect on a reader's attitudes towards the possible loss of learning happening with laptops present. Another element of logical reasoning is making hasty generalizations. Snyder states, "I would not have the attention of these very gifted students if I did not ban laptops and smartphones from my classroom" (165). This is an example of a hasty generalization. He is attributing their attention loss to laptops, not giving thought that even without computers, other factors may play a role in attention loss. • 11. Laptop And Tablet Computers : Computers Computers are ubiquitously in the world today, used by practically everyone; it is a device that a majority of people cannot live without. Used by all, the young, the elderly, for work or just for entertainment. In today's world they are two different types of computers that are really popular, they are: laptop and tablet computers. While both shares exceptionally close similarities like portability and both are capable of doing about the same task with inadequate limitations. In a day to day operation they are fairly different. The major difference lies within their uses, laptops are mainly used as a compact portable desktop, while tablets are used mainly for entertainment or amusement purposes. No one really knows what the future holds, but at the pace that technology is growing, that line is now becoming blurred and I 'm guessing that in the future there is not going to be a comparison between the two. One of the most important distinctions between the two is that of suitability, laptops are used for more of the serious work, and while tablets are also capable of doing the same; they are not generally used for the same purposes. Laptops are predominantly used when writing a paper or article doing a presentation, writing programs, or browsing the internet. A laptop is capable, in the sense of power, speed and convenience. Whereas tablets on the other hand is predominantly used at home for browsing the internet, app gaming, listening to music or reading a book. Electing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. In Defense Of Laptops In The Classroom Summary The article "In Defence of Laptops in the Classroom" by Rebecca Schuman, a university professor, offers a different perspective to the banning of laptops in academics. She argues that while it might be distracting, it is ultimately the student's own attitude towards education that dictates the effectiveness of electronics in the classroom. As the title suggests, Schuman argues that laptops have a place in the modern day classroom. She emphasises how the current generation lives in an age that "doesn't learn to write by hand" (5) and argues that it is impossible to separate technology from learning. She presents the opinion that one "learn(s) all kinds of things the hard way in college" (10). She presents the distractions of the laptop as an obstacle that students should learn to overcome on their own terms rather than forcibly, in order to further benefit them in the future. She brings up the idea of "responsibility" (10), one that is taught through actual experience instead of a textbook. Throughout the article, Schuman does not back away from the fact that "the case for a laptop–free classroom is indeed strong" (3), even going as far as to include studies and evidence that support the detriments of the laptop. The emphasis on the challenges posed highlights the initiative that she wishes to impart by relaxing control on students. The stress on self creates awareness as to how students are often treated with differing attitudes, as "13th–graders", children, in the classroom, yet expected to make decisions of importance, "old enough to vote and go to war" (7). • 16. Computers : Laptop Vs. Desktop Student Computers: Laptop vs. Desktop Today most individuals would consider a computer an essential tool of their everyday lives. In particular, students must become very familiar with computers in order accomplish various tasks necessary for their classes. The two basic forms of computers that most students will use are the laptop and the desktop. For college students, choosing between them can be a difficult and confusing task. Students must ensure that their device will provide the functionality they need for their intended uses. Laptops and desktops both have their strengths and weaknesses; college students will need to select a device that best serves their needs in areas of processing power, mobility, cost, and functionality. Sufficient processing power is a necessity of any computer. If a student chooses a device that cannot perform adequately in the appropriate areas, that device is essentially useless. For most students, a powerful central processing unit, or CPU, will be a must. Laptop computers generally offer a very similar arrangement of CPU's as desktops. However, due to the power constraints of mobile computers, these processors are still less powerful than their desktop counterparts. Because desktops do not rely on battery power, they can utilize more powerful processing components. Basic laptop processors are perfect for simple tasks, but students needing to accomplish demanding tasks such as video editing will appreciate the added processing capabilities ... • 17. Laptops : The Negative Effects Of Computers In The Classroom Technology is constantly improving and children are being introduced to it at younger ages. These innovations have led to the integration of laptops in schools. Laptops and other personal devices are quickly becoming a staple in many classrooms. Although many people support laptops in the classrooms and claim they are beneficial, laptops have an overall negative effect on classrooms. Computers in the classroom have brought some benefits. According to Efaw et al., "Since students can easily submit their assignments and have them shown on screen, instructors can cover more assignments in class" (155). Using online programs related to class content can help motivate the students to work (Efaw et al. 155). Additionally, with the current advances in technology, laptops are becoming more affordable and accessible (Wood et al. 1). Furthermore, laptops in the classroom can help students learn to use the tools provided by their computers that they may use in their future careers (Efaw at al. 155). In spite of those benefits, laptops have proved to be problematic. Students are likely to engage in negative multitasking and distracting behaviours. Students are introduced to technology early on, which allows them to face a great amount of information and comprehend it quickly. This is problematic in classrooms, especially in lecture based classes where students are likely to become bored, which encourages distraction (McGaugh 163). Laptops are for everyone these days, they have several advantages over the tablet or cell phone. The first advantage is simple, the screen is larger on a laptop. This may not seem important for everyone, but for those suffering with vision loss it can be the key to accessing the internet and performing basic tasks. The consumer must be careful about screen size, because most of a laptop 's weight comes from the screen. If you plan on using one primarily at home, then this is not a concern, however it can become an issue for those who travel and need a laptop for business purposes. Another advantage is that a laptop is portability, this can make or break the person who must regularly travel, and needs a computer that can go with them. Such people often have tasks that include accessing the internet for business purposes, document creating, and networking, while some mobile devices can do similar tasks, the laptop is more powerful and for many easier to use. Claims have been made that Apple is too expensive and PC's are too slow and of cheap quality. After the introduction of Microsoft's Windows in 1985 the PC market has been dominated due to Microsoft's Windows operating system[ii]. The domination of the market is largely due to the flexibility of Windows. Using the rating system previously described, we asked consumers to rate their laptops if they are a great value for the price. Dell's overall average was a 5.2 while Apple's overall average was a 4.3. One thing that stood out to us was that Apple owners rated Apple laptops a 5.4 when the rest of the consumers rated them a 3.8. This leads us to believe that owning an Apple laptop may make you believe that it is a great value for its price. On the next question, we asked consumers to rate their laptops on a uniqueness and design. Here, Apple blew away Dell with an overall rating of 6.3 compared to Dell's 3.9. In this, Apple received a much higher overall rating than Dell, receiving a rating of 6.0 vs Dell's 4.8. • 25. Should Laptops Be Allowed In The Classroom The Tools They Use: Should Laptops Be Allowed In the Classroom? In today's classrooms, laptops are becoming more and more prevalent. Their use has been fervently debated, with some teachers in support of allowing students unrestricted access to their laptops and some in support of banning them completely. With restrictions for classes such as mathematics or science, laptops should be allowed in other classroom settings because they allow students to take thorough notes and to jot down more of the lecture. Several arguments are presented by those in favor of banning laptops in the classroom, and many of them are echoed. In a New Yorker article by Dan Rockmore, "The Case for Banning Laptops In the Classroom," Rockmore claims that students who take long–hand notes instead of taking notes on their laptops retain the information better and are less distracted than those with unfettered internet access (Rockmore para. 7). He states that taking long–hand notes helps students integrate the information and creates deeper modes of recall (Rockmore para. 7). Rockmore cites studies from universities like Cornell and Princeton to support his assertions (Rockmore para. 5, 7). Aside from shallow note–retention, he implies that laptops can be distracting to students because they are portals for socialization and entertainment (Rockmore para. 9). National Public Radio's James Doubek shares similar arguments. In his article, "Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away," he brings up the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. The Best Laptops For College Students Today, the world has the technology to reinvent the learning process as well as the school process. Everyday students lug 20 pound backpacks to school carrying everything from notebooks and binders to textbooks. Throughout the day students must carry this weight around, which can cause back issues in the future. All that dead weight could be replaced by a single device, a notebook personal computer(PC). The average PC "can weigh as little as 1.25 pounds" according to Dennis McCafferty in Computers In The Classroom –– Want to learn the abc 's of the mobile computing space? and can carry enormous amounts of data. There are many forms of notebook computers, Laarni Ragaza provides a well developed review of different computers and how they work with educational services in her article "The Best Laptops for College Students." Integrating PC's into the school program will allow students to directly connect with their teachers, assignments, textbooks, and notes all on one device, in a much more efficient and organized manner. This negates the need for the cluttered backpacks and lockers students have to scramble through to find their assignments. Having PCS on hand will allow students and teachers to connect instantaneously to transfer assignments and go over lesson plans. The PC's will also enable students to connect to the internet, allowing them to further research the topic at hand. With PCs students can have a more immersive and orderly learning environment. • 33. Compare And Contrast Laptops Two of the most used computing devices today are laptops and tablets. Laptop means a portable microcomputer having its main components (as processor, keyboard, and display screen) integrated into a single unit capable of battery–powered operation (Merriam–Webster). Tablet is defined by Merriam–Webster as a mobile computing device that has a flat, rectangular form like that of a magazine or pad of paper, that is usually controlled by means of a touch screen, and that is typically used for accessing the Internet, watching videos, reading electronic books, etc. Laptops and tablets are two different kinds of computers with laptops being suitable for productivity and tablets being appropriate for consumption (Smith). Even though iPads can strugglingly do some photo editing, working on a PC is, for the most part, easier and more pleasurable (Smith). Applications explicitly designed for mobile devices like tablets are not as powerful as their desktops' counterparts; also, with the current hardware giving tablets accesses to laptops' software are impractical (Bourque). According to what is mentioned earlier, serious gaming is another field where laptops' powers are necessary. In addition, according to the definitions given in the introduction, tablets are not supposed to have these accessories. Since a tablet is defined as a device which "is usually controlled by means of a touch screen," and one of the main parts of laptops is a "physical" keyboard, using one with a tablet alters the definitions. According to DataXoom, one advantage which tablets have over laptops is that they are more portable, so using accessories with a tablet ruins the benefit, not to mention that it is unreasonable why one who longs for portability would carry many pieces of machines at once. Compared to what a laptop is capable of, a tablet is already an expensive device; therefore, paying more for the same experience is not very sensible. In conclusion, Tablets are really great machines, however they cannot replace laptops effectively. The main reasons which make tablets disqualified are the lack of effective physical keyboards and the little power when compared to laptops. The article focuses on a series of previous research on the topic and studies with the goal of providing evidence to answer their two main questions. The first question is which one the two note taking strategies works better and increases academic performance longhand note taking or laptop note taking. The second question is how verbatim overlap (word for word) affects our learning. The external–storage hypothesis suggests that by writing down the information is helpful because you can review it later, therefore increasing retention. Even though, there has been a mix of results in these hypotheses it is certain to say that the use of these two hypotheses together can help improve the academic performance. Other research suggests that note taking can be generative (in our own words) and non–generative (word for word). Verbatim note taking tends to lower our cognitive process. The deeper the information is processed and encoded the better the comprehension and retention of the information and better it is for encoding. The research has shown that people who take verbatim notes show a lower academic performance than those who use non–verbatim notes. In the article were three studies conducted to answer two questions "whether taking notes on a laptop versus writing long–hand notes affects academic performance and to explore the potential mechanism of verbatim overlap as a proxy for depth of processing". • 35. Persuasive Essay On Laptops In Education In today's day and age, technology surrounds us while we indulge in it. Technology is slowly taking away the traditional methods of learning while we adapt to the contemporary methods. High Schools now provide laptops for the students to use throughout the school year for note taking and research. Although typing notes is fast and simple on a laptop, writing the notes forces you to slow down and address the vital information. To start off, using a laptop in class will prevent you from learning. Many people that use laptops in class to take notes are easily distracted by the worldwide web or social media. There was a survey that was taken weekly for 10 weeks that revealed what the students were doing on their laptops during class. A majority (64%) of the respondents reported using their laptops during at least one class session. They reported using their laptops to take course notes (83.3%), send email (81%), send and receive instant messages (68%), surf the internet (43%), and play games (25%). An additional 35% reported using their laptops on "other" non–course–related activities (Fisher). This study showed that the vast majority of people that used their laptop didn't not just take notes, they also used it to browse the worldwide web. Some of those students that used their laptop to take "notes" didn't even take notes. Methodological There are at least four issues with respect to methods used to evaluate the use of laptops in higher education . First, the predominant method of data collection is the case study. While this approach offers guidance and advice on best practices for using laptops, the reliability and validity of the data have yet to be confirmed for the general population. Second, some studies have employed quasi–experimental methods to evaluate the impact of laptops on student achievement. These studies do not offer data on how laptops are actually used in higher education classrooms. Third, a number of studies involve students who were not provided equal access to technology. Motiwalla's paper on using handheld devices in class is innovative, yet it is not truly indicative of the benefits and drawbacks of mobile learning because many of the students in the sample did not have devices equipped with the technology essential to participate in the study. Finally, the majority of studies offered no reliability or validity estimates for the measures used to assess laptop behavior while the data from these studies offers useful suggestions regarding laptop use. Laptops In The Classroom Summary "In Defense of Laptops in the Classroom" by Rebecca Schuman is an article that aims to put across a point that the attitude of the students in class is a decision for the students to make. She states that being a "Laptop Police" (Para 2) – played by the professors – can be helpful to the students in learning but it is also stopping the students from making their own decisions when it comes to the attitude of learning. Schuman had presented her article in a positive stand where she does not disagree with other professors' idea of banning laptops in class to improve learning. Instead, she is trying to convince us that the professors' decisions will not make a significant change in the attitude of the students. She states a point where the attitude of the students is entirely "their responsibility" (Para 10). The author had not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her usage of her own experience as a professor conducting classes using the laptops for "regularly planned activities" (Para 9) showed the positive use of laptops in class. She also described "teaching a 13th–grade classroom" (Para 7) as a college class. It is hard to imagine that college students will still act like children that do not think for themselves. She convinces us with the example of having a "smaller seminar where their presence actually registers and matters" (Para 8) that social conformity may play a huge part in changing the attitudes of students when it comes to learning.
