Orhan Pamuk is a famous Turkish novelist known for works exploring Turkish identity and history. He teaches at Columbia University. Pamuk was born in Istanbul in 1952 and showed an early interest in painting and dreams. Orhan Pamuk is a famous
Turkish novelist, best
known for works that
probe Turkish identity
and history.
He is also teaching
comparative
literature and writing
at Columbia University.
3. HOW HAS HE BECOME A UNIVERSAL
FIGURE?
His brilliance in writing fiction paved the way
for his worldwide recognition. The White
Castle is the fırst novel that was translated
and that made Pamuk known universally.
Orhan Pamuk’s books have been translated
into 46 languages, including
Georgian, Malayan, Czech, Danish, Japanese,
Catalan, as well as English, German and
French. In 2005, Pamuk has been awarded
The Peace Prize, which is considered as the
most prestigious award in Germany in the
field of culture.
4. PAMUK’S LIFE
Pamuk was born in
Istanbul, Turkey, on June
7, 1952
His father was a civil
engineer and also a
lecturer at university.
Pamuk grew up in an
affluent, secular
household.
5. He attended the prestigious
American Robert College in
Istanbul and later went on
to get education at the
University of Istanbul, where
he got his B.A. in
journalism.
Until the age of thirty,
Pamuk lived with his parents
who allowed him to
concentrate first on his
paintings then writings by
supporting him financially.
6. HIS LEARNIG INTERESTS
When he was a
child, he liked painting
so much and wanted to
be a painter. His family
always supported him
for his paintings. After
many years he started
writing and in this field
he received a number
of awards.

He was a visual learner at
school which can explain his
great interest in painting. He
can be thought as a right-
brained person in the light of
this information.
At the same time he was a
great dreamer. He always
dreamed about everything.
He was very different from
other students in this
respect.
These features of him made
him a genious writer.
