members namely Clement Chen, James Tay, Janice Lee, Xhiang Lynn, Hariish Kumar and
Adam Tan the company has been the pioneering force behind the rapidly development

education and hospitality sectors. The company's focus is to provide affordable
developments in conjunction with green features and sustainable design that emphasizes

Mr Clement Chen is an established project manager with
more than 7 years of experience in this field. He was the
Project Manager & Assistant Architect for many other
projects later on such as, Apple Campus by Norman
Foster Architect and locally the project manager of KL
2017. Currently, he is moving towards a new direction in
the building industry and has worked with Malaysian
government in the 1MDB project worth more than
RM2.6bill and has an in-depth knowledge of statutory
procedures, guidelines and policies.

Our client Taylors’ University has selected BLACK SDN BHD among few other
companies to propose a new recreational district for the upcoming Architectural
Workshop in 2018. The purpose is to manage and facilitate any future outdoor activities
for staff and students, as this will create a common bond within the campus community.
2.2 PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND REQUIREMENTS
OBJECTIVES
1. To become a Design Innovative & Excellence Centre
2. To encourage the community to be appreciative towards arts and technology
3. To promote excellence to a higher level
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
As a start, the ‘Recreation District’ will be used for the upcoming Architectural Workshop
to be held at the University compound in August 2018. As such, it needs to be carefully
planned and implemented to its completion before August 2018.
1. Budget allocation: RM1,500,000.00 (not inclusive of professional fees)
2. Site requirements: Size 600m2
3. Spaces to be provided –
-Indoor and partially outdoor
-Office (max 3 person)
-Lounge Toilets (2 units each M/F)
-Indoor/outdoor recreation area (darts, carom, congkak, table tennis, table games –
monopoly, scrabble etc.
-Cafeteria (20 people)

The success criteria of the project is to produce a design which exceeds client's
expectations and satisfaction, constructed within six months and within the budget not
exceeding the preliminary cost as agreed with the client.

1. Proper structure used for the design based on calculations and
recommendations
2. Proper design for carpark in accordance to By-Laws with integration of
landscaping and views of the lake. providing a good overall experience for
users
3. Minimal injuries and casualties during the construction process to prevent
delays and
maintaining a good reputation of the company.
4. Proper implementation of used shipping containers as building materials.
5. Carefully planned building with abundant aesthetic for a pleasant experience
for users
6. The completed project is well equipped with sustainable features in term of
the selected materials in assurance of proper hygiene and refinement works
7. The complete project has no unwanted construction defects. which has been
carefully planned by the professionals in field at all time.

TIME
The project is to be completed within six months to avoid higher exposure
and risk In ensuring a successful project delivery. the following conditions
are to be met during the construction phase:
1. Transportation of materials and site monitoring is strictly adhered.
2. Construction workers are supervised company assigned contractors. architects
and engineers to ensure a consistent workflow. as well as ensuring wellbeing.
3. Construction and installations of building components are to be completed as
scheduled in Gantt Chart.
4. Weekly Client-Consultant Meetings is held to ensure project is on schedule and
on time.
5. Regular consultants meeting held internally between all consultants to discuss
and quickly solve problems that may arise
6. Strict adherence to Gantt Chart throughout the course of the project

The success criteria of the project must be attained at the client's budget
that benefit both the stakeholder and the client.
1. Clear articulations of plan by consultants for optimized spending on resources by
introducing long term usable materials and by reducing. reusing and salvaging
materials for building structure and furniture’s.
2. The completed project should be attained locally and sustainable as per client's
requirement.
3. The cost must be achieved with client’s satisfaction that beneficial in long term.
4. Detailed calculations of cost and budget by Quantity Sun.-'eyor according to
estimated current market price of materials and the quality of materials
5. Renting less machinery through use of in-house machineries by the company.
SCOPE
The project is to adhere to the status of the schedule. control influences
that cause schedule changes and manage changes efficiently.
1. Consultants constantly review and rework when needed.
2. Produce proper and accurate estimation of the project in timescale and budget
3 Risk Analysis is carried out and kept at high priority. Constant high levels of
awareness of site safety and health precautions are carried out on site.
4. Schedule of project is constantly updated and rectified based on changes in the
project.

4.1.1 Design statement
This recreation district is a new platform to manage and facilitate any future outdoor
activities for staff and students, as well as to create and strengthen common bonds within the
campus community. This recreational center will form a new chill out spot for students and also
provide a short getaway for students from their hectic study life, providing a more vibrant
university experience.
Shipping containers would be used for this project as it is abundantly available. It is also
a green alternative to the traditional building materials. Furthermore, shipping containers are
easy to manipulate, cost efficient and allows for fast construction yet still being very durable and
also aesthetically pleasing.
This recreation district responds to users by its variety of programs that it caters for as
well as the spatial layout of these programs as to how each space is very permeable to one
another yet creating spaces which have very different and distinct ambience to one another.
Every floor is filled with activities which liven up the atmosphere such as active sports
and also passive sports which instills a strong sense of excitement in users whenever they are
in this center.

4.1.2 Precedent Studies
Urban Rigger
Urban Rigger is a student housing
designed by bjarke ingels, the
scheme provides affordable and
sustainable homes for young
academics studying in
copenhagen, denmark. The building
is of carbon neutral property made
from upcycled shipping containers
and is of a stack design on a floating
platform. It has a total of 15 studio
residences over two levels and
internal shared open courtyard in the
centre. This courtyard, besides acting
as a garden, also has the intention of
protecting the houses from rising sea
levels. Furthermore, these containers
were stacked in a hexagonal fashion
and orientated to its best angle to
provide panoramic and best views.

composition to frame a central courtyard.
Thus, building footprint is minimised while
opening views to water

By detaching the corners slightly, a hexagonal
courtyard with open corners takes form,
creating a connection between communities
and allowing for further expansion
Multi-level connections
Another layer of container units completes the
circle, forming a hexagon of overlapping
entities
Internal communities
Courtyards at the heart of urban rigger create
opportunities for community activities within
each unit. As weather in Denmark changes
drastically, gaps are closed with greenhouse
glass, minimising thermal exposure
Outward views
The hexagons combine in a variety of ways to
form different communities, focusing views in
all directions and creating clear and unique
views directed towards the sea

Container Stack Pavilion
Container stack pavilion, designed by
People’s Architecture is located in Dong
Shan Ma Lu, China. This project consists of
shipping containers stacked and shifted in
plan and layered in elevation to maximize
rooftop views and shaded public areas on
the ground at the Container Stack Pavilion.
A 7.5 meter cantilevered box is the point of
entrance to the building’s upper level roof,
while the pavilion itself seems to extend out
toward bordering streets, showcasing its

4.2 Site Study and Responses
4.2.1 Site analysis
NOISE
A dual direction vehicular circulation occurs on
the site, which causes disturbance in acoustics
and visuals.
OBSTACLES
As the rear side is an uphill terrain, spaces
located higher will be directed to that view to be
able to observe what’s beyond the uphill terrain.
Therefore, spaces on the higher floors are more
open.
VENTITLATION
First floor is entirely open to receive natural wind
for stack and cross ventilation throughout the
building, reducing the need for mechanical
ventilation thus passive design achieved.
VEGETATION
The site is located on rocky uneven grounds, with
hard soil conditions and unpaved grounds
surrounding it, making pedestrian walking
experience unpleasant. Therefore, paved
walkways will lead people into the building, with
vegetation acting as a natural edge and a buffer
zone between the bare grounds surrounding our
site and our eventual building.

VIEWS
We would take advantage of what seems to be
the most interesting view from the site which
would be to the lake, therefore, views from interior
spaces will be directed towards the lake view.
VISUAL CONNECTIVITY
Solid and void spaces create visual connectivity

A centralised design to incorporate a courtyard café and
space for a skate board park was explored.

Stack
By stacking shipping containers on top of one another, a
multi layered building was developed which allows visual
connectivity to all spaces. Shipping containers would cater
different types of spaces such as a lobby, kitchen, office,
restrooms, video game room.

By creating a “loop” circulation on the first floor, a more open
space is formed which aids in cross and stack ventilation
throughout the building to achieve a passive design in order
to reduce the need for mechanical ventilation.

The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia's industry recognised green rating tool for buildings
to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise awareness among Developers,
Architects, Engineers, Planner, Designers, Contractor and the Public about the environmental
issues and our responsibility to the future generations.
The GBI rating tool provides an opportunity for developers and building owners to design and
construct green, sustainable buildings that can provide energy savings, water savings, a
healthier indoor environment, better connectivity to public transport and adoption of recycling

THERMAL INSULATION
Bulk insulation mainly resists or slows down the transfer of heat by conduction and convection,
relying on pockets of trapped air or low conductive gasses within its structure. Its thermal
resistance is essentially the same regardless of the direction of heat flow through it.
The thicker the insulation, the higher the R value for that product.Bulk insulation includes
materials such as glass fibre, slag wool, rock fibre, cellulose fibre, polyester fibre, polystyrene,

7.2.1 Cassette Type Air-Conditioning
Ceiling cassette air-conditioning are mounted as
the name suggest; in the ceiling. This is most
effective in a suspended or “floating” ceiling
where there is room to accommodate the unit.
The ceiling mounted provides a large area of
coverage which is exceptionally useful in large
areas like the skatepark and magazine corner.
The use of multi head split system are more cost
effective as its great coverage would only require
1 unit per space. The silent operation of the air-
conditioning also provides a comfortable reading
environment for the users to read and relax.

7.6.1 Wet Pipe Sprinkler System
Wet pipe systems are the mon common fire sprinkler system. A wet pipe system is one
in which water is constantly maintained within the sprinkler piping. When a sprinkler
activates, the water is immediately discharged onto the fire.
Advantages:
• System simplicity and reliability
• Relative low installation and
maintenance expense
• Ease of modification
• Short term down the following

BLACK Sdn Bhd 4.1.1 Design statement This recreation district is a new platform to manage and facilitate any future outdoor activities for staff and students, as well as to create and strengthen common bonds within the campus community. This recreational center will form a new chill out spot for students and also provide a short getaway for students from their hectic study life, providing a more vibrant university experience. Shipping containers would be used for this project as it is abundantly available. It is also a green alternative to the traditional building materials. Furthermore, shipping containers are easy to manipulate, cost efficient and allows for fast construction yet still being very durable and also aesthetically pleasing. This recreation district responds to users by its variety of programs that it caters for as well as the spatial layout of these programs as to how each space is very permeable to one another yet creating spaces which have very different and distinct ambience to one another. Every floor is filled with activities which liven up the atmosphere such as active sports and also passive sports which instills a strong sense of excitement in users whenever they are in this center.

BLACK Sdn Bhd 4.1.2 Precedent Studies Urban Rigger Urban Rigger is a student housing designed by bjarke ingels, the scheme provides affordable and sustainable homes for young academics studying in copenhagen, denmark. The building is of carbon neutral property made from upcycled shipping containers and is of a stack design on a floating platform. It has a total of 15 studio residences over two levels and internal shared open courtyard in the centre. This courtyard, besides acting as a garden, also has the intention of protecting the houses from rising sea levels. Furthermore, these containers were stacked in a hexagonal fashion and orientated to its best angle to provide panoramic and best views. Figure 4.1.2.1 shows images of urban rigger

Thus, building footprint is minimised while opening views to water Creating connections By detaching the corners slightly, a hexagonal courtyard with open corners takes form, creating a connection between communities and allowing for further expansion Multi-level connections Another layer of container units completes the circle, forming a hexagon of overlapping entities Internal communities Courtyards at the heart of urban rigger create opportunities for community activities within each unit. As weather in Denmark changes drastically, gaps are closed with greenhouse glass, minimising thermal exposure Outward views The hexagons combine in a variety of ways to form different communities, focusing views in all directions and creating clear and unique views directed towards the sea Figure 4.1.2.2 shows diagram analysis of urban rigger
  • 37. BLACK Sdn Bhd Container Stack Pavilion Container stack pavilion, designed by People’s Architecture is located in Dong Shan Ma Lu, China. This project consists of shipping containers stacked and shifted in plan and layered in elevation to maximize rooftop views and shaded public areas on the ground at the Container Stack Pavilion. A 7.5 meter cantilevered box is the point of entrance to the building’s upper level roof, while the pavilion itself seems to extend out toward bordering streets, showcasing its interior activities.   • 40. BLACK Sdn Bhd 4.2 Site Study and Responses 4.2.1 Site analysis NOISE A dual direction vehicular circulation occurs on the site, which causes disturbance in acoustics and visuals. OBSTACLES As the rear side is an uphill terrain, spaces located higher will be directed to that view to be able to observe what’s beyond the uphill terrain. Therefore, spaces on the higher floors are more open. VENTITLATION First floor is entirely open to receive natural wind for stack and cross ventilation throughout the building, reducing the need for mechanical ventilation thus passive design achieved. VEGETATION The site is located on rocky uneven grounds, with hard soil conditions and unpaved grounds surrounding it, making pedestrian walking experience unpleasant. Therefore, paved walkways will lead people into the building, with vegetation acting as a natural edge and a buffer zone between the bare grounds surrounding our site and our eventual building.
