2.1 CASE STUDY OF CONTENA ARCHITECTURE
THE CONTAINER BAR BY NARTH ARROW STUDIO
It proposed a range of experiences within the area by stacked arrangementof recycled shipping container to provide a
both open and enclosed spaces which forms the container bar. The stacked volumes have each been converted into a
series of private rooms, making their original function as a container unrecognizable when inside. The double volume of
ceiling height in the bar area is covered by a floating steel roof structure to ensure the weather protection, but also
helps in framing the courtyard with the surrounding of vegetation.
Through the case study, itproposed the similar of structural element thathelps to support the roof structure & stacking
containers with our pavilion which designed the indoor & outdoor gallery of housing the architecture & interior working
models.

LOCATION PLAN N.T.S
The site is a lake located opposite to block E and block D which near to the architecture & interior design studio. It has a
small pathway in front of it and a pond near to it. Greenery can be found around the site but still, it is very hot as there
is a lack of sun shading device around. It has a nice view of the lake and few seating are provided along the pathway as
well for the students to have activities around. The location of site is a suitable place for housing the model works as it
can be partof the attraction to the university when people passing through the area.

2.2 SITE ANALYSIS
2.2.4 S.W.O.T ANALYSIS
Site C is the area which itnears to the architecture & interior course block E thatallows the gallery of their works to be
shown easily when passing through around the area. The larger & ample space which situated at the site is good enough
for ventilation to pass through that can be part of the energy efficiency design features but it hard to construct due to
the water body which required by client. The expose of sunlight dedicated to higher level of hotness which allows the
opportunity of stopping point for users when passing through the area for resting and visit the gallery works. It can be
treat as gathering space for students to do their works and interests in the activity room. The views of the site also
become the opportunity for the pavilion to be created in order to attract people to come.
STRENGTH
- good ventilation
-larger & ample open space
WEAKNESS
-expose to large amount of heat
-hard to construct due to waterbody
OPPORTUNITY
-shelter
-gathering space
-lake view

5.1 FOUNDATION
Pile foundations are used in the construction of pavilion to support the weight of the platform and the entire structure
above it. It is a system used to transfer loads to a deeper soil layer while resisting vertical, lateral and uplift load.
Considering the location of site where the building is sat on the waterbody of a lake: concrete piles are selected due to
the strength of the material while avoiding the corrosion that mighthappen to steel pile. It is used to transfer the loads
from the structure through the water and into stiffer soil under underneath it.
Advantages of precastconcrete piles:
 High load capacities
 Will notcorrode
 Easy to be connected to each other
 Relatively inexpensive
 Quality check can be done before driving
Comparing to steel piles which are:
 More expensive
 Piles will corrode after some time
 Piles tend to deviate during driving
Precast concrete piles are selected and
they usually come in triangle, circle or

Acontainer pavilion can be considered as a sustainable building as itcan be reuse after being used forshipping. Bydoing
that, it reduces the amountof abandon containers thus cutting down on the energy needed to melt down the steel.
It can reduce the cost of building construction as the containers are load bearing therefore minimal structures are
needed to construct the building. At the same time, it is versatile as they can be stacked on top of each other creating a
multi-level structure while greatly reducing the construction time.

Considerations needed for container building:
 Selecting the rightsized container
 Not over cutting steel panels to avoid losing its strength
E.g. removal of all corrugated panels
 Openings e.g. door, window, skylight thatare added should be taken care off to avoid leaking
 Sloping roof has to be used to allow rainwater to run off as the containers have a flat upper surface
 Insulation need to be added to ensure water proofing
 Insulation for hot or cold weather

CONTEMPORARY WINDOWS & DOORS
The proposed types of windows and doors is similar to the early industrial style by using a variety of materials &
elements you might find in a factory, such as corrugated metal, concrete and exposed wood. This look has become
increasingly popular in urban settings nowadays.
COLOURS & FINISHES
Painted exterior finishes are most common in the Industrial Modern style. The colour range is quite varied and
includes dark colours. For interiors, maple with a clear coat finish is customary. However, other wood species
and stains, or painted wood, may also be used.

BHD Company No: 123456-T 41 CONTENA PAVILION/PROJECT 1/2017 5.1 FOUNDATION Pile foundations are used in the construction of pavilion to support the weight of the platform and the entire structure above it. It is a system used to transfer loads to a deeper soil layer while resisting vertical, lateral and uplift load. Considering the location of site where the building is sat on the waterbody of a lake: concrete piles are selected due to the strength of the material while avoiding the corrosion that mighthappen to steel pile. It is used to transfer the loads from the structure through the water and into stiffer soil under underneath it. Advantages of precastconcrete piles:  High load capacities  Will notcorrode  Easy to be connected to each other  Relatively inexpensive  Quality check can be done before driving Comparing to steel piles which are:  More expensive  Piles will corrode after some time  Piles tend to deviate during driving Precast concrete piles are selected and they usually come in triangle, circle or octagonal section. The piles are produced in one metre intervals between 3 and 13 meters however they can be connected to reach the required length. Maximum length – Precast 10-15m Pre-stressed 20-30m Optimum load range – 350-3500kN 5.0 C&S ENGINEERING

Bydoing that, it reduces the amountof abandon containers thus cutting down on the energy needed to melt down the steel. It can reduce the cost of building construction as the containers are load bearing therefore minimal structures are needed to construct the building. At the same time, it is versatile as they can be stacked on top of each other creating a multi-level structure while greatly reducing the construction time. 5.0 C&S ENGINEERING
