Fairy Tales By The Grimm Brothers
Originally, fairy tales were used to teach children social norms or cultural beliefs within a society,
instead of primarily being used as entrainment. Fairy tales are also known to guide children to
accept the traditional stereotypes of being female and male, as they typically reinforce the idea that
women would be more desirable if they are not only obedient, but pure and beautiful as well. The
view of women as a 'lessor sex' is also a common belief in a patriarchal society, which is commonly
found in most fairy tales. The ideas which fairy tales reinforce needs to be challenged. Written by
the Grimm brothers, the two fairy tales Little Snow White {1819} and Little Briar Rose {1812} will
be analysed, along with Hans Christian Andersen's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The film does discriminate against women, as it portrays women to be submissive to a man's will.
The film also displays an attitude that it is perfectly acceptable for a beautiful woman to fall in love
with an ugly beast, but there is no indication that it is okay for a handsome man to fall for an ugly
woman. The film also displays woman solely in the private sphere, and the one occasion where
Belle leaves it, she has to be rescued. This indicates the idea that once a woman leaves the comforts
of home, she has to require the services of man to ensure her safety. Aside from the enchantress, all
other female character are shown as silly and selfish.
The film also displays the idea that if one does not conform to societies guidelines and values, then
they will be deemed as an outcast. Throughout the beginning of the film it is clear to the reader that
Belle is very intelligent, and possesses qualities which are typically reserved for male characters,
such as being adventures, reading, and inventing. Despite her obvious intelligence, the villagers
deem her as an outcast due to her overall longing for adventure. This reinforces the thinking that
intelligent females are a rarity, and to be something to be tolerated, but not encouraged. This is
shown when the villagers attempt to foil her ideas,

The Grimm Brothers And The Brothers
Throughout history, many stories are handed down generation to generation. When the brothers,
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, started to publish a different type of story that depicted ordinary
characters that overcame tough situations through supernatural and violent means, it caught
attention among the people. These stories portrayed characters that not only possessed abnormal
characteristics, but also had the lives of their adversaries end rather abruptly. The Grimm brothers
collected extensively on fairy tales depicting violent behavior that were directed to be read to the
children of that time which in turn gave a whole new meaning the term "fairy tale."
In a 2012 article, Cavendish provides some basic information regarding the Grimm brothers various
works. Their first published volume of Kinder– und Hausmärchen was released in 1812, which
included a total of 86 short stories. They then went on to release a second volume in 1814 and
gathered an additional 70 stories to incorporate. Eventually, many more editions were published and
after including additional stories as well as subtracting some, the translated English version became
known as Grimm's Fairy Tales (p. 8).
Short stories often begin with the death of another human being. Using Cinderella as an example,
Cinderella mourns when her mother tragically dies early on in the story. In a 2000 article, Hohr
discusses how one of the main problems that Cinderella has to face is the loss of her mother and
how she is going to

Themes In Brother And Sister By The Brothers Grimm
The fairy tale, Brother and Sister by the Brothers Grimm, is about two siblings trying to escape their
evil witched stepmother. All they wanted after their mother died was another rainbow to shine down
on them. As they were running away, the brother was bewitched by their stepmother and turned into
a roebuck. The witch believed that was the end for them so she returned to her home with peace.
The little girl and the roe went on their way, and they found a secluded cottage out in the middle of
the forest. They became content living in the cottage. One day, the king and his huntsmen were in
the forest, and the little roe wanted to join in on the hunt. So the sister let him go after he had begged

For example, someone in the higher or middle class a better say in the government than someone in
the lower class. The people in the upper class know more people, seem more trusting, and have a
better chance of making something of themselves. People in the upper class tend to know other
people that are in the social class, which makes them look good as well. They are also more

History Of The Grimm Brothers
Who are the Grimms Brothers? Well The Grimm Brothers were two brothers named Jacob and
William, and they lived in a family of nine children. They were famous for help writing and
improving the beautiful tales known as fairytales. Although they did not write the fairytales, they
went to towns and asked the people to tell their stories that have been past down to them. Later after
they heard the stories they would write them down and interpret it and make it more interesting.
Although the original fairy tales were not at all like the fairy tales today, they still were very
interesting. The original fairy tales were not at all what Disney put in their movies. The original ones

The Movie ' The Brothers Grimm '
Tangled does a really good job making sure they don't make Repunzel look weak and giving her a
lot of power, but they totally forget about the male of the story Flynn Ryder. The Brothers Grimm on
the other hand manage to have no masculine stereotypes for the prince but they make Repunzel look
like a helpless lamb.
In the original Brothers Grimm fairytale Repunzel just agrees to marry a total stranger and has no
second thoughts about such a plan. In Tangled she ties him up and hits him over the head with a
frying pan. When he tries to smoochz her she hits him again. These opposite reactions have to do
with the time period. If disney had come out with something with as bad of a message as the original
Brothers Grimm everyone would have been really upset at the poor influence it had on young
woman. It would have betrayed the out of date gender role that women are just waiting around to be
acknowledged by the male. Tangled also couldn't have gotten away with making Repunzel as, let 's
say naive, as in the original. I mean seriously this girl is not smart. Since this is a bit of a bold claim
here are some damning examples, "when you come, bring each time a silken rope and i will make a
ladder, and when it is quite ready I will get down by it and out of the tower" you know what else
works Repunzel? one long rope, cutting off your hair and tying it to the windowsill, even a clothes
rope. Probably the biggest and most obvious statement leading to these allegations of

Comparing Tangled And The Brothers Grimm
Tangled is a Disney movie created to tell the story of Rapunzel, a young girl taken by a witch and
locked in a tower. "Rapunzel" is a story collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brothers'
Grimm, about a young girl locked in a tower. Although they seem quite similar, there are quite a few
differences between the movie Tangled and the Brothers' Grimm "Rapunzel". One difference occurs
at the beginning and how the evil witch gains possession of Rapunzel. In the Brothers' Grimm story,
the witch agrees to let the man give the rampion from her garden to his wife as long as she gets their
first born. She said "the child that will come into the world must be given to me. It shall go well
with the child, and I will care for it like a mother." In the movie Tangled, a queen is pregnant and
gets sick. To heal her, people are sent out to look for a flower that cures all diseases. When the baby
is born, she has magical hair that can heal everybody and make you young again. The evil witch
breaks into the castle to cut a piece of the baby's hair but learns that once it's cut, it loses it's power.
So instead, she takes the child and flees the castle. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the movie Tangled, Rapunzel is locked up from the time she was kidnapped until she's 18. In the
Brothers' Grimm story, she gets locked in the tower when she's 12. In addition to that, another
difference In the movie Tangled is while she's locked in the tower. A man named Flynn Rider, a
wanted criminal, climbs into the tower. He helps her get out and takes her to see the lanterns. In the
Brothers' Grimm story, the king's son discovers the tower and hears Rapunzel singing. Once he
figures out how to get into the tower, he calls for her to let down her hair. Rapunzel lifts the king's
son into the tower and they create a plan to get her out of the tower to marry

The Brothers Grimm 's Fairy Tales
In the 19th century the Brothers Grimm fairy tales gave us, sex, vengeance, cruelty, crime and
murder. When the Brothers Grimm wanted to get across their morals, they used the sex, vengeance,
cruelty, crime and murder. For example, in Cinderella the step sisters, cut off parts of their feet to fit
into the golden slipper, and The Little Mermaid died at the end of her story. In the 20th Century, we
have more of a sugar coated approach to fairy tales. For example, in Cinderella her step sisters,
simply tried to squeeze into the glass slipper and Little Mermaid ended up with her prince. Now in
the 21st century, the fairy tales have stayed the same but , the style of sci–fi and other horror films
and fairy tales have gone back to what it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Historians tell us that fairy tales originated in the age marked by wars, plague, and famine" Maria
Tater writes in the Annotated Brothers Grimm, a 200th–anniversary reprint (W.W. Nortan, 552PP)
but then again, that could be said about any age in human history. The Grimm tales take place in
European landscape of villages and castles surrounded by forests, and they feature recognizable
preindustrial types: longsuffering peasants, quick–witted artisans, provided yet insecure royalty.
Love, hate, jealousy, envy, greed, fear, and ambition are the root of folk tales in the universal and
fundamental human emotions. "Pride is a mortal sin, kindness the cardinal virtue; these are the
values of people who see the world as a dangerous place, where a helping hand may be required to
snatch you from the clutches of capricious fate". The ubiquity of magical creatures and events hints
at an underlying understanding that in reality happy endings are hard to come by––that without
supernatural assistance, Cinderella would still be sleeping in the ashes after a hard day 's work and
the miller 's daughter in "Rumpelstiltskin" would have been put to death for failing to spin straw into
gold." Resourcefulness and courage matter in folk tales, but luck matters more. Although Wilhelm
Grimm added some pious exhortations, folk tales inhabit and illuminate a morally ambiguous
universe. "Pure, virtuous

Brothers Grimm's Cinderella, By The Brothers Grimm
Brothers Grimm's fairy tale "Cinderella" is a story of a young girl's life under her harsh stepmother.
The young girl's mother passes away, and her rich father remarries a woman with two daughters.
They mistreat the young girl so much that she always "looked so dusty and dirty" that people called
her Cinderella (Grimm 117). One day, the father gets his daughters what they want: beautiful
dresses, pearls and jewels for his stepdaughters, and a branch from the hazel tree for Cinderella.
Cinderella plants the hazel spring on her mother's grave, where it grows into a beautiful tree after
her tears fall on it. A little white bird would fly to it and toss the girl what she wanted. One day a

While Shavit's argument about learning a lesson is true, the lesson Shavit offers is complicated by
close reading of the tale. Instead of adult reliance and obedience being fully celebrated, there are
times in the story where it is punished, and other times wherein independence is celebrated. After
all, Cinderella is able to achieve her happy ending because she chooses when and who she listens to.
She listens to her mother and up until a certain point, to her stepmother. She does not blindly rely on
adult figures, and is independent enough to pursue what she wants, bringing up the notion of
independence being allowed as long as there is desire. In contrast, her stepsisters blindly follow their
mother, going as fall as mutilating themselves, yet only receive further punishment as their eyes are
pecked out. This then depicts the relationship between adult and child in "Cinderella": although
reliance and obedience is important, a child must not blindly follow adult figures and should learn to
be independent – when to do either, on the other hand, is something not clearly defined in the tale.
The relationship between adult and child is not so clear–cut, as the notions of "good," "evil" and
desire complicate how a child should act. The ambiguity between when to obey and rely on adults,
and when to make your own choices indicates that at times, the child has to make complex
decisions. This is important to consider as it paints how child readers view their own relationships
with adults, possibly even empowering them as it reveals that the child does not simply have to
obey, but is allowed to have a choice in that

The Brothers Grimm were two brothers named Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm who were born in Hanau,
Germany and their parents were named Philipp Wilhelm Grimm and Dorothea Grimm. The brothers
were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers and authors. Together they collected and
published strange folklore in the 19th century.
After their father died the family suddenly became very poor and that affected them for many years,
but still they went to the University of Marburg and that is when they first became curious about
German folklore and that became a lifelong dedication to collecting them.

The beautiful woman with magic powers and lively songs that are recognizably Cinderella, was
never included in the original tale. Cinderella "plants a tree by her mother's grave and prays under it
every day" (Triska). When the time comes for the festival, which last three nights, Cinderella finds
her dresses under this tree (Grimm, 83, 84). The splendid glass slippers that are known with
Cinderella, are another adaptation that was made after the original story was first written by the
Grimm Brothers. Before the festival "the birds [in the tree] threw...slippers embroidered with silk
and silver" (Grimm, 83). After Cinderella loses her slipper the last night of the festival, the prince
goes to her house and asks for the stepsisters to try on the slipper that he has. When the first sister
tries on the slipper her toes will not fit into the slipper. Her mother tells her "'Cut the toe off; when
you are Queen you will have no more need to go on foot.'" (Grimm, 85). When the second sister
tries on the slipper after the prince finds out that she cut off her toes, her heel will not fit into the
slipper. The stepmother tells the second daughter, "'Cut off a bit of your heel; when you are Queen
you will have no more need to go on foot.'" (Grimm, 85). After each of the sisters tricks the prince,
small birds tell the prince that he is carrying the wrong girl on his horse; they affirm to him the he is
carrying his princess when Cinderella is finally able to wear her lost slipper (Grimm, 86). Once
Cinderella and the prince are together and are getting married, "[the stepsisters] attend her wedding,
only to have their eyes pecked out by birds" (Triska). While Cinderella has many major adaptations,

Brothers, Jacob Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm are known world wide as "The Grimm
Brothers". These authors are famous for their work in the history and structure of the German
language and its relationship to other languages as well as, German folklore, tales and literature.
Through their lifelong research into the German language they created their own Dictionary called,
"Grimm Law." The Brothers also, published more than two–hundred and ten German folk tales that
they created from the stories that the villagers and peasants told them. Originally, these stories were
written for adult readers and considered inappropriate for children. Many of their stories have been
adapted by companies like Disney that want to turn them into appropriate children stories or movies.
Philipp and Dorothea Grimm had nine children, all of which, did not survive to adulthood. Jacob,

Fairy tales have been passed down from generation to generation, each person in one way or another

Because of the hardships they faced growing up their tales take on a more gruesome approach to
fairy tales. Because their mother was their only caregiver growing up, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
reflect their fondness towards her through the strong willed, independent female characters in their

A true hero in the eyes of Jacob and Wilhelm, their mother single handedly overcame opposition in
their family, just as their sister did growing up with five brothers. (Grimm, 11) The sentiment of
being abandoned as children unlocked a new territory of potential as their creative juices began to
surge. "Child abandonment is a many–faceted concept within myth, folktale, and literature," and the
Brothers Grimm explored this concept in great detail (Garry, 3). As they began to express
themselves through literature, male figures, such as fathers, were often dismissed as the females
stole the spotlight in their fairy tales. "Some modern psychologists have argued that [their] harsh
family background influenced the ways the Brothers Grimm interpret and present their tales"
(Grimm, 15). Without a prominent male figure growing up, they only had their mother to look up to
and to idealize as the strong willed individual who never gave up despite all the privation send her
way. The Brothers Grimm incorporate their own perspectives to generally recognized fairy tales,
often adding a twist and a more callous feel to them. They first started their collection of fairy tales
in 1806 by writing down those that they had previously heard from the females in their
neighborhood while growing up. This serves as another female sway on their fairy tales that
influences their stance on men vs. women in regards to

Child abuse, like poverty, was a common problem that still exists today, by either a parent or
guardian. In 2014, 702,000 children were victims of child maltreatment ("Child Abuse") with the
number rising each year. Over time, the abuse Hansel and Gretel faced allowed them to become the
symbol of the Hansel and Gretel Foundation, the haven for abused children (Lecture Notes,

Gretel continued to hope that the situation would get better; it is the same hope that abused children
today need to hold onto so they do not become part of the health–related statics, like substance

Grimm Brothers Collective Culture
The Grimm brothers lived in a factioned Germany with many different cultures that were struggling
to connect with one another. In attempts to help unify Germany the Grimm brothers, Jacob and
Wilhelm, traveled throughout the country; listening, collecting, and writing down oral stories and
fables from various regions in Germany. They believed that preserving oral culture and stories from
various places in Germany would nationalize Germany by having a collective culture rather than
many different cultures. With seven total editions and a dictionary, preserving culture and unifying
Germany was their life goal. Writing down these oral stories and collecting them assisted in the
formation of Germany as a nation rather than multiple different imagined communities. Most
nations have a shared common culture and an official language. The Grimm brothers helped usher in
an age of oneness in Germany and in doing so, Germany became a more unified nation.
At the time that the Grimm brothers were collecting their stories, Germany was many different
groups of people, differing by region. They were not what we consider today a nation. "A nation is
an imagined political community– and imagined as both inherently limited and

they belong to one another through shared beliefs, however, they will never meet everyone who is

Introduction:
I chose to research fairytales, specifically fairytales by the Grimm brothers. Fairytales are short
stories that tend to consist of fantasy people, places, and objects. Many of these consist of fairies or
magical creatures. Most fairy tales start off with "Once upon a time", or "In a faraway land". Many
times in fairytales objects are enchanted and can talk or move. The most common characters in a
fairy tale are prince and princess. A lot of fairy tales are retold throughout generations. As a child I
was told fairy tales as bedtime stories. I grew to love Disney movies which are popular for remaking
fairytales such as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. To this day I still enjoy remade fairy tales such

In "Sleeping Beauty", there is an evil fairy that is portrayed as a magic character. These
characteristics have been common throughout fairytales for as long as people can remember.
"Fairytales, as they exist today, took shape in sixteenth–century Italy" (Bottigheimer, par. 11) The
Grimm brothers were known for creating fairytales for children but scrutinized for them being so
gruesome. "Friends and associates of the Grimm brothers expressed their concern over the exposure
of children to the household tales" (Einfeld 81). Although the Grimm brothers saw their stories as
educational and having morals, many argue that the stories were not appropriate for children and
should not be told to them. The Grimm brothers did start an argument though stating, "Fright was
seen as an effective disciplinary measure for children" (Einfeld 91). By freighting kids they would
learn lessons from their fairytales and remember them as they grew older. Frightening acts took
place in many of the Grimm tales such as Rapunzel's lover becoming blind by the evil Gothel while
trying to visit her in the tower. The fairytales that the Grimm brothers created have over time been
retold in less gruesome manner to educate children and provide entertainment.
Fairytales by the Grimm brothers were not only gruesome but also have a common characteristic of
most fairytales, which is having evil characters or villains that are played by a women figure. This

Fairy Tale By The Grimm Brothers
Rapunzel is a well–known fairy tale, originally created by the Grimm Brothers, that has changed
very much throughout the years. Starting out as a story of a girl locked in a tower, it has evolved
into countless versions. The most common adaption of the Grimm Brothers' story is the disney
movie Tangled. This movie debuted in 2010 and was a hit. Overall, the Grimm Brothers story has
become iconic for it's history and also its adaptations. The story Rapunzel was published in 1812 for
the first time ever by The Grimm Brothers, in Germany. During this time period, the mindset of the
German people was different than what it is today. The people of Germany believed in magic,
whereas today they know that it is not real. The reason that most of these Grimm Brother's stories
are based on magic, including Rapunzel, is because of this. Also at this time in Germany, most of the
people were commoners, middle class or even poor. That is why these stories are set in common
time and involve common people, for the most part. In Rapunzel, she is born into a poor family and
is a commoner herself. The Grimm Brothers themselves have a very interesting history. Although
most people believe that the Grimm Brothers are responsible for writing their fairytales, they are
not. These fairy tales were written long before the brothers were born, however they collected all the
stories and binded them together in one book. The Grimm Brothers went around asking friends and
family for fairy tales that they

Everything from music, to movies, and fairytales has been influenced by society. More specifically,
society has influenced the Grimm Brothers fairy tales. The Grimm Brothers fairy tales would be
considered dark and gruesome by today's standards. Parents would not allow their own children near
the stories, which caused society to give the tales a more PG feeling. The tales changed and became
what we know them as today. Disney has played a major role in creating the innocent versions that
today's early generations have experienced. While they rarely admit it, societies, such as Disney,
caused the original works of the Grimm Brothers to be overshadowed by their infantile adaptations.
Most of you have probably heard of the Grimm brothers, and if you haven't heard of them, you have
most likely seen their work. Disney movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella
are child friendly versions of the Grimm brothers' original fairy–tales. Ironically, the brothers had no
intention on becoming story–tellers, when first starting their journey. The book The Annotated
Brothers Grimm stated, that when trying to study other languages they found it easiest and best to
share stories that had been passed down generation to generation. The brothers kept all the stories
they had heard and published a book in 1812 called Kinder und Hausmarchen, which translates to

Ludwig even made drawings of some varieties of plants and insects. He worked in many styles and
media, too, ranging from rough sketches to detailed engravings, from blurred watercolors to
meticulous drawings. One of Ludwig's greatest artistic gifts was his ability to give very real
personalities to the faces of his subjects by using various facial expressions and a masterful
command of the different positions and characteristics of the eyes. This ability, along with his
interest in nature and his use of a myriad of subjects, including all types of people and landscapes,
lent itself well to the illustration of fairy tales.
The second edition of the first volume of the Grimms' Fairy Tales marked Ludwig's first
involvement with fairy tales. Achim von Arnim, who lent money, editing and publishing services,
and advice to the Grimms, had only one criticism of the enormously successful first edition of Fairy
Tales: it needed illustrations. The logical choice to fill this void in the second edition was Ludwig,
who made a series of engravings to accompany the text published in 1819. Since that book was
published, nearly every

Cinderella Vs Grimm Brothers
Cinderella Then and Now The original Cinderella collected by the Grimm Brothers is very different
than Disney's Cinderella. The version collected by the Grimm Brothers was first oral tradition than
written down long after oral tradition. While both the original version and the Disney version of
Cinderella talk about true love and a story from rags to riches, the Grimm Brothers' version is more
gruesome while Disney's version is also about love, it talks about what you need to have the courage
and be kind. The original version of Cinderella is very different than the newest version of
Cinderella that came out in 2015. The new version of Cinderella is a live action film whereas the
Grimm Brothers' version is in a book and not a film. The version of Cinderella that was collected by
the Grimm Brothers was called "Aschenputtel" which was written in German in 1857. What
happens in the version is that when the prince is looking for Cinderella one of the stepsisters cuts off
her toes and the other her heel. The live–action film starring Lily James is not gruesome at all
because the stepsister does not cut their feet to fit in the shoe. ... Show more content on

trailblazer. Cinderella in the live–action film is also represented as examples of strength and smarts.

Comparing The Grimm Brothers And The Little Mermaid
Contrasting the Grimm brother's version and Disney's version of The Little Mermaid.
Although both stories follow along with the same idea, they are entirely two different stories.
Having lesser detail, the original fairy tale was very short and only gave the main character a name,
a back story, and a goal. Disney's interpretation was more decorated and told a much longer, kid–
friendly story. The Grimm Brothers created a dark and simple fairy tale that was full of unexpected
twists and turns. Each sentence was very simple, and didn't add unnecessary details. I would like to

past what kind of creature they were. I found it really interesting to read something I thought was

It was more in depth, and it gave each character a back story– a life. Understandably, the story was

name was Sirenetta. Ariel has had this obsession with the surface for many years, collecting and
gathering all kinds of objects humans had used. Sirenetta was never allowed close to the sky

The Symbols Of The Grimm Brothers
Fairy tales weren't always fairy tales. Happy–endings weren't always the goal. It didn't use to be in a
land far away. Once upon a time didn't exist.
The Grimm brothers wrote stories as gory and grim as their name suggests. Their tales were darkly
comical, brusque and tragic. They were stories that were the truth for the people.
It all began, 200 years ago when this seemingly ordinary pair of brothers and German librarians put
together one of the most influential work of folklore in Germany, Europe and now the world.
Wilhelm Carl and Jacob Ludwig Grimm, the brother's interest in literature was fostered when they
were at the University of Marburg in the early 1800's was when they were encouraged to collect
popular German folklore stories and other material by their law professor, Friedrich Carl von
Savigny. Savigny was an important figure in the nationalist Romantic Movement that called for
Germany to be culturally and politically united.
Savigny was a form of inspiration to the brothers and a mentor to them. The brother's used
metaphors in their writing that they believed were saving authentic German popular culture, an
endangered species at that time. The metaphors used by them were messianic and ecological. The
preface of the first edition of the book begins with, 'We find it well, if storm or other misfortune,

Comparing The Robber Bridegroom And The Grimm Brothers
Fairy tales possess the ability to last throughout the decades. The stories are passed down from
generations and teach valuable lessons in extraordinary ways. In fact, most fairy tales began with
oral storytelling. However, The Grimm Brothers made multiple editions of tales that they claimed as
their own. With over 200 fairy tales, not all of their stories gained the same amount of popularity.
Their more prominent stories, such as "Cinderella" and "Snow White," create a sense of whimsy
with talking animals and love. In contrast, "The Robber Bridegroom," a lesser known fairy tale,
focuses on dark ideas: cannibalism and murder. The Grimm Brothers' fairy tale "The Robber
Bridegroom" did not reach the same level of acclaim as other Grimm stories ... Show more content

Grimm stories usually contain the standard characters of a fairy tale. In a normal fairy tale, the
characters include the fool, the fairy, the wicked crone, the charming prince, and the beautiful
damsel (Heckel). While not all of these characters are always included, most stories contain some
combination of them. These characters help make the iconic setup that makes the story popular. For
instance, the famous fairy tale "Snow White" shows off a wicked crone, a charming prince, and the
beautiful damsel. Snow White escapes her evil queen mother and ends up with her prince ("Snow
White"). In "Snow White," the ideal structure is in place; everything comes together and it has a
joyful ending. However, in "The Robber Bridegroom," there is no charming prince or a standard
wicked crone ("The Robber"). The daughter is left to defend herself against the suitor and she does
not end up with love. The archetypal characters are not only missing, but the standard theme of love
is not present anywhere within the story. The fairy tale did not reach its full capability because it

The Fairy Tales By The Grimm Brothers
Society has and always will continue to have a great influence on many things such as, music, to
movies, and even fairy tales that we thought we knew so well. More specifically, society has
influenced the Grimm fairy tales. The original Grimms ' tales that were collected would now be
considered dark, gruesome, explicit and something that children should not, for any reason read.
Because of this, over time society wanted a change in what their children were hearing, reading and
now seeing. The tales have been changed and sugar coated to become as what we know them as
today. Disney is highly responsible, in part, for the innocent versions that today 's early generations
have been exposed. It begins with the Grimm brothers' long journey across Germany to study
language or also known as linguistics; and from here, society 's influence at the time started with the
creation of the tales. The Grimm brothers were well–known and fascinating story–tellers. Most of us
who have seen the classic Disney movies such as Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
have viewed an innocent and warmhearted version of the gruesome and dark tales that are known
from the Grimm fairy–tales. In the beginning of their journey, the brothers had no intention of
becoming world famous story–tellers. An article called the "Grimms ' Fairy Tales" states that the

Morals Of The Brothers Grimm
Before the Brothers Grimm transcribed what is known today as one of the most recognized
fairytales ever recorded, it was being passed down orally from generation to generation at every
corner of the globe. Various versions of Cinderella's myth can be found in almost every culture in
the world, all very distinct with their own specific qualities, reflecting each society's predominant
interpretations of religious themes. For instance, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's works were known to
promote their Prussian culture and language, such as "Aschenputtel", their German version of
Cinderella. Most of their adjustments were heavily influenced by the criticism of their fellow
countrymen, their audience, and their Christian beliefs.
The Brothers Grimm used a fearful and hopeful tone, syntax and story details in Aschenputtel to
convey the moral of the tale, "Virtue will be rewarded, Iniquity will be punished" (Perrault, pg. 162),
while still upholding the fairytale conventions. Fairytales were often used to convey a moral, social
or political lesson. "Aschenputtel" was no different. The Brothers Grimm "expressed the hope that
their collection would serve as a "manual of manners" (Erziehungsbuch)" (Tatar, pg.456) for
children, a host that would transmit moral lessons for life. The gory tone of the tale seems to
contradict such statement, but "in 1939, Vincent Brun accused the German of perverting the fairy
tale by exploiting its rude primitive instincts to educate...children." (Haase, pg.

Comparing Cinderella And The Brothers Grimm
Folk tales and fairy tales are stories that have been told to us since we were kids. Some stories are
passed down from generation to generation and change along the way. Fairy tales as Cinderella have
many different variants depending on the origin of where the story was created. A Cinderella story in
the United States differs from a Cinderella story from Russia. "Cinderella" is nothing of a mere
template of a specific folk tale. Cinderella is a story of a daughter who is looked down upon by her
evil stepmother and her stepsisters. Her stepmother does not allow her to go to a ball announced by
a prince, but Cinderella eventually finds a way of going and she marries the prince. Charles Perrault
and The Brothers Grimm are both famous for their variations of this story. Perrault is famous for
adding many elements to the story such as the fairy godmother and the glass slipper. Grimm is
famous for his gruesome version of Cinderella that ended in the eyes of the sisters getting pecked
out by birds. Despite both stories being similar, Perrault and Grimm show many aspects of the story
that are sparingly different.
Both stories consisted of an evil stepmother, but there is a father in both stories who play a different
role. In Perrault's version of the story, he says "The poor girl bore all patiently, and dared not
complain to her father, who would have scolded her if she had done so, for his wife governed him
entirely" (Perrault, 236). The father is fully controlled by the

Grimm Brothers Cinderella
I choose to revise the Grimm brothers' Cinderella because I felt the tale left the most negative
impact on young girls. It was the tale that infuriated me the most for its emphasis on beauty as the
only element that brings value to women. I can't exactly claim that this tale is the root of all beauty
problems but it has certainly played a role, being as it is the most popular tale worldwide with
countless revisions. Characters such as Cinderella make women feel like they have to be the upmost
beautiful women in order to marry a prince. Thus, women constantly subject themselves to pain and
mutilation in order to reach impossible beauty standards. Women pay for expensive cosmetic
surgeries, plaster their faces with make–up, do extreme diets, ... Show more content on

I moved the focus from beauty to education. I made it very clear to never mention whether or not
Liberella was beautiful or not. It could be that Liberella was very beautiful but I did not want to
bring any attention to that because it doesn't matter if she is or not, the only thing that matters is her
intellectual mind. A norm that is express in the Grimm's tale is that there is no price too high for
beauty. If you have to cut your toe or heel, then so be it, all in name of the prince. The stepmother
says, "Once you become queen, you won't have to walk anymore" (Grimm 83). I removed this
because it is a horrible message that teaches girls they are just objects to be looked at. Liberella does
not dream of being a man's trophy wife, she dreams of being a doctor who will fix cuts like the one
the step–sisters did in the original Grimm's tale. A norm that I did keep in my tale was the female
competition. The two bully sisters, Jessica and Lauren, constantly compare themselves to Liberella
by saying stuff such as, "She's not even pretty! We are way prettier than her!" (Torres 3). Liberella
doesn't feel the need to compare herself to those girls, but Lauren and Jessica do because they want
to bring other girls below them so that they can always want to be at the top of the beauty hierarchy.
That is what the obsession of beauty does to young girls. The original Grimm's Cinderella teaches

'The Brother Grimms Version Of Rapunzel'
The Brother Grimms' version of Rapunzel tells the story of a girl who was taken from her family as
soon as she was born and kept in custody until adulthood. When examining the story from a feminist
perspective, it becomes apparent that Rapunzel is a character that is given no choices of her own.
She is forced to follow all of the enchantress' instructions and is not able to live her own life until a
male character enters to save her. Rapunzel was taken by the enchantress as soon as her mother had
given birth to her. She was taken away due to the fact that her father had given her up due to fear in
a certain situation. Right off the bat of this story, both Rapunzel and her mother are treated as
objects. The father completely disregards the fact that Rapunzel is a human being and she is his and
his wife's daughter. Not even consulting his wife before making this decision. I can't help but

years old, the enchantress shut her into a tower, which lay in a forest, and had neither stairs nor door,

Rapunzel did not grow up to be a beautiful child? If Rapunzel had not grown up to be beautiful,

Grimm Brothers Cinderella
In the famous story of Cinderella, what do you think is the theme or main lesson of Cinderella? The
theme of Cinderella is bad people never succeed and good people will always prevail. The Grimm
Brothers Cinderella presents the theme of the Cinderella Archetype the best. The three different
examples that best present the theme in Grimm Brothers Cinderella are a bird takes out both of the
stepsisters' eyes for mistreating Cinderella poorly, making fun of Cinderella and not giving her a

If you were to compare Charles Perrault with the Grimm Brothers they both wrote in the beginning
that the stepsisters' treat her poorly but in the end it is different because in the Grimm Brothers the
sisters get consequences from birds. In the Charles Perrault Cinderella they forgave Cinderella for
all of their wickedness and Cinderella accepts the apologization and gives them lodgings in the
palace and 2 lords of the court. Only in the Grimm Brothers Cinderella, she has to pick up lentils
that her stepsisters' throw down for her to pick up. The Charles Perrault Cinderella difference that
was stated affects the theme because since the sisters apologized to Cinderella she gave them a
lodging and 2 lords which disagrees with the theme a little bit because the theme states that bad
people never succeed. The first part doesn't work because the stepsisters' didn't get a consequence in
the Charles Perrault. In the Grimm Brothers one they did and in the Charles Perrault they got to live
in the palace. Thatt is kind of like succeeding so that crosses out that bad people never succeed but
the good people succeeding still works because in the end Cinderella gets married in both stories.

similarities in the tales they tell. Both have morals for each tale. Some are weaker than others while
others are also stronger than others as well. The fairy tale I would be writing about would be little

Unlike in the version written by Perault, the Grimm Brothers take a creative path in which it is not
Bluebeard's appearance that makes others feel on edge when he is around, it is evident that that the
reason people find his presence discomforting is far deeper than his exterior. The list of variances
could go on and on, however, the main difference is the color of the man's beard. In the fairy–tale
written by Perrault, Bluebeard indeed has a blue beard. However, this is not the case in the tale

Today's story and renditions of "Rapunzel" are derived from the 1857 publication by Jacob and
Wilhelm Grimm in their collection of fairy tales and folktales, Children and Household Tales;
however, ideas for their published story had much more primitive origins. The original motif of hair
being used as a ladder dates all the way back to the 10th century when a Persian poet by the name of
Ferdowsi wrote that, "Roudabe offers to lower her hair to her true love, Zal, to use as a ladder to
climb up on to the roof of the women 's enclosure," as Laura Getty describes in her article "Maidens
and their guardians: Reinterpreting the `Rapunzel ' tale" (16). Much of "Rapunzel"'s plot is
influenced by oral German translations of the Italian fairy tale Petrosinella by Giambattista Basile in
1634. Similarly to how Rapunzel is locked away in a tower by a fairy as a consequence for her
parents stealing rapunzel plant from the fairy's garden, Petrosinella, or Parsley in English, is taken
by an ogress in consequence for her mother taking Parsley from the her garden. The ogress then
proceeds to "put the poor girl into a tower, which she caused to arise by her art, and which had
neither gate nor ladder, but only a little window, through which she ascended and descended by
means of Parsley 's hair, which was very long," (Ashliman). Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm used all of

Grimm Brothers Literary Analysis
From 1812 to 1857, the Grimm Brothers collected and shared stories that continue to be told to this
day. Middle class women that were recognized for their storytelling abilities would visit the Grimm

ranged from fairy tales, horror stories, tall tales and comical accounts (578). Foreign rule created a
strong desire within the countrymen to recall their Germanic roots to figure their cultural worth
(578). This enhanced the Grimm brother's purpose of sharing these stories to preserve living

A Brief Look at the Brothers Grimm
How many little girls dream of being Snow White? How much money did Disney's Tangled make?
What little girl hasn't dressed up as Cinderella or dreamed of meeting her very own prince
charming? These popular fairy tales were created by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Their primary
motivation when starting their collection of fairy tales was to preserve culture rather than entertain,
but entertain is what they did. These fairy tales, and versions of them, have remained popular for a
very long time, outlasting most other works of literature. The Brothers Grimm adapted these well–
known stories from around Europe to reflect their own personal views, Germanize them and remove
some of the more disturbing details of the original stories. In the same way, these fairy tales have
been altered again and again to be acceptable to society. Fairy tales similar in theme can be found
across the world. The Brothers Grimm versions are the most familiar because their emphasis on
German culture and Christian morals is very similar to American culture and values. The
adaptability and skillful incorporation of morals and issues considered socially unacceptable in an
entertaining story, has allowed the Brother's fairy tales to last throughout the ages. One of the most
popular of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales is Snow White. In the original version, the theme was
that of a mother–daughter rivalry, but the Grimm brothers changed many elements so that it would

The Grimm Brothers And Fairy Tales
The Grimm Brothers are well known around the world for the fairy tales they shared to the world.
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, were German academics, linguists, cultural
researchers, lexicographers, and authors who together specialized in collecting and publishing
folklore during the 19th century. They were among the best–known storytellers of folk tales and the
popularized stories such as "Cinderella", "The Frog Prince", "Hansel and Gretel", "Rapunzel",
"Rumpelstiltskin", and "Snow White". Their first collection of folk tales, Children 's and Household
Tales, was published in 1812 (Brothers Grimm). The Grimm Brothers shared fairy tales that had
been passed down through generations, these stories changed the everyday lives of many people by
influencing their perception. This article will help to get to know the Grimm brothers from their
family origins, to what happened to their stories over years.
The Grimm Brothers originally came from Hanau, Germany. The boys grew up in a family of
eleven. Sons of Philipp Wilhelm Grimm and Dorothea Grimm, née Zimmer had nine children and
three died in infancy. Jacob and Wilhelm were the second and the third eldest in the family. In the
early 1800's, the boys began to study law at the University of Marburg. While there at the university

Fairy Tales By The Grimm Brothers

  • 1. Fairy Tales By The Grimm Brothers Originally, fairy tales were used to teach children social norms or cultural beliefs within a society, instead of primarily being used as entrainment. Fairy tales are also known to guide children to accept the traditional stereotypes of being female and male, as they typically reinforce the idea that women would be more desirable if they are not only obedient, but pure and beautiful as well. The view of women as a 'lessor sex' is also a common belief in a patriarchal society, which is commonly found in most fairy tales. The ideas which fairy tales reinforce needs to be challenged. Written by the Grimm brothers, the two fairy tales Little Snow White {1819} and Little Briar Rose {1812} will be analysed, along with Hans Christian Andersen's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film does discriminate against women, as it portrays women to be submissive to a man's will. The film also displays an attitude that it is perfectly acceptable for a beautiful woman to fall in love with an ugly beast, but there is no indication that it is okay for a handsome man to fall for an ugly woman. The film also displays woman solely in the private sphere, and the one occasion where Belle leaves it, she has to be rescued. This indicates the idea that once a woman leaves the comforts of home, she has to require the services of man to ensure her safety. Aside from the enchantress, all other female character are shown as silly and selfish. The film also displays the idea that if one does not conform to societies guidelines and values, then they will be deemed as an outcast. Throughout the beginning of the film it is clear to the reader that Belle is very intelligent, and possesses qualities which are typically reserved for male characters, such as being adventures, reading, and inventing. Despite her obvious intelligence, the villagers deem her as an outcast due to her overall longing for adventure. This reinforces the thinking that intelligent females are a rarity, and to be something to be tolerated, but not encouraged. This is shown when the villagers attempt to foil her ideas, ... • 3. The Grimm Brothers And The Brothers Throughout history, many stories are handed down generation to generation. When the brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, started to publish a different type of story that depicted ordinary characters that overcame tough situations through supernatural and violent means, it caught attention among the people. These stories portrayed characters that not only possessed abnormal characteristics, but also had the lives of their adversaries end rather abruptly. The Grimm brothers collected extensively on fairy tales depicting violent behavior that were directed to be read to the children of that time which in turn gave a whole new meaning the term "fairy tale." In a 2012 article, Cavendish provides some basic information regarding the Grimm brothers various works. Their first published volume of Kinder– und Hausmärchen was released in 1812, which included a total of 86 short stories. They then went on to release a second volume in 1814 and gathered an additional 70 stories to incorporate. Eventually, many more editions were published and after including additional stories as well as subtracting some, the translated English version became known as Grimm's Fairy Tales (p. 8). Short stories often begin with the death of another human being. Using Cinderella as an example, Cinderella mourns when her mother tragically dies early on in the story. In a 2000 article, Hohr discusses how one of the main problems that Cinderella has to face is the loss of her mother and how she is going to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Themes In Brother And Sister By The Brothers Grimm The fairy tale, Brother and Sister by the Brothers Grimm, is about two siblings trying to escape their evil witched stepmother. All they wanted after their mother died was another rainbow to shine down on them. As they were running away, the brother was bewitched by their stepmother and turned into a roebuck. The witch believed that was the end for them so she returned to her home with peace. The little girl and the roe went on their way, and they found a secluded cottage out in the middle of the forest. They became content living in the cottage. One day, the king and his huntsmen were in the forest, and the little roe wanted to join in on the hunt. For example, someone in the higher or middle class a better say in the government than someone in the lower class. The people in the upper class know more people, seem more trusting, and have a better chance of making something of themselves. People in the upper class tend to know other people that are in the social class, which makes them look good as well. They are also more informed on what goes on in their community and country. Those who are higher up know how to dress better, and they have the extra money to spend on themselves. Usually, when someone feels right with themselves and other can tell. This gives everyone else a sense that they could be trusted. They also have a better chance of escalating themselves socially. They are already in the upper class, which only means they can only do better. Rather people in the lower class, they do not much social contact with other higher than them. Those who are in the lower class tend to this sense of not caring. They do not care how they dress or what is going on in the government. • 7. History Of The Grimm Brothers Who are the Grimms Brothers? Well The Grimm Brothers were two brothers named Jacob and William, and they lived in a family of nine children. They were famous for help writing and improving the beautiful tales known as fairytales. Although they did not write the fairytales, they went to towns and asked the people to tell their stories that have been past down to them. Later after they heard the stories they would write them down and interpret it and make it more interesting. Although the original fairy tales were not at all like the fairy tales today, they still were very interesting. The original fairy tales were not at all what Disney put in their movies. • 9. The Movie ' The Brothers Grimm ' Tangled does a really good job making sure they don't make Repunzel look weak and giving her a lot of power, but they totally forget about the male of the story Flynn Ryder. The Brothers Grimm on the other hand manage to have no masculine stereotypes for the prince but they make Repunzel look like a helpless lamb. In the original Brothers Grimm fairytale Repunzel just agrees to marry a total stranger and has no second thoughts about such a plan. In Tangled she ties him up and hits him over the head with a frying pan. When he tries to smoochz her she hits him again. These opposite reactions have to do with the time period. If disney had come out with something with as bad of a message as the original Brothers Grimm everyone would have been really upset at the poor influence it had on young woman. It would have betrayed the out of date gender role that women are just waiting around to be acknowledged by the male. Tangled also couldn't have gotten away with making Repunzel as, let 's say naive, as in the original. I mean seriously this girl is not smart. Since this is a bit of a bold claim here are some damning examples, "when you come, bring each time a silken rope and i will make a ladder, and when it is quite ready I will get down by it and out of the tower" you know what else works Repunzel? one long rope, cutting off your hair and tying it to the windowsill, even a clothes rope. Probably the biggest and most obvious statement leading to these allegations of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Comparing Tangled And The Brothers Grimm Tangled is a Disney movie created to tell the story of Rapunzel, a young girl taken by a witch and locked in a tower. "Rapunzel" is a story collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brothers' Grimm, about a young girl locked in a tower. Although they seem quite similar, there are quite a few differences between the movie Tangled and the Brothers' Grimm "Rapunzel". One difference occurs at the beginning and how the evil witch gains possession of Rapunzel. In the Brothers' Grimm story, the witch agrees to let the man give the rampion from her garden to his wife as long as she gets their first born. She said "the child that will come into the world must be given to me. It shall go well with the child, and I will care for it like a mother." In the movie Tangled, a queen is pregnant and gets sick. To heal her, people are sent out to look for a flower that cures all diseases. When the baby is born, she has magical hair that can heal everybody and make you young again. The evil witch breaks into the castle to cut a piece of the baby's hair but learns that once it's cut, it loses it's power. So instead, she takes the child and flees the castle. ... A man named Flynn Rider, a wanted criminal, climbs into the tower. He helps her get out and takes her to see the lanterns. In the Brothers' Grimm story, the king's son discovers the tower and hears Rapunzel singing. Once he figures out how to get into the tower, he calls for her to let down her hair. • 13. The Brothers Grimm 's Fairy Tales In the 19th century the Brothers Grimm fairy tales gave us, sex, vengeance, cruelty, crime and murder. When the Brothers Grimm wanted to get across their morals, they used the sex, vengeance, cruelty, crime and murder. For example, in Cinderella the step sisters, cut off parts of their feet to fit into the golden slipper, and The Little Mermaid died at the end of her story. In the 20th Century, we have more of a sugar coated approach to fairy tales. For example, in Cinderella her step sisters, simply tried to squeeze into the glass slipper and Little Mermaid ended up with her prince. Now in the 21st century, the fairy tales have stayed the same but , the style of sci–fi and other horror films and fairy tales have gone back to what it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Historians tell us that fairy tales originated in the age marked by wars, plague, and famine" Maria Tater writes in the Annotated Brothers Grimm, a 200th–anniversary reprint (W.W. Nortan, 552PP) but then again, that could be said about any age in human history. The Grimm tales take place in European landscape of villages and castles surrounded by forests, and they feature recognizable preindustrial types: longsuffering peasants, quick–witted artisans, provided yet insecure royalty. Love, hate, jealousy, envy, greed, fear, and ambition are the root of folk tales in the universal and fundamental human emotions. "Pride is a mortal sin, kindness the cardinal virtue; these are the values of people who see the world as a dangerous place, where a helping hand may be required to snatch you from the clutches of capricious fate". The ubiquity of magical creatures and events hints at an underlying understanding that in reality happy endings are hard to come by––that without supernatural assistance, Cinderella would still be sleeping in the ashes after a hard day 's work and the miller 's daughter in "Rumpelstiltskin" would have been put to death for failing to spin straw into gold." Resourcefulness and courage matter in folk tales, but luck matters more. Although Wilhelm Grimm added some pious exhortations, folk tales inhabit and illuminate a morally ambiguous universe. The young girl's mother passes away, and her rich father remarries a woman with two daughters. They mistreat the young girl so much that she always "looked so dusty and dirty" that people called her Cinderella (Grimm 117). One day, the father gets his daughters what they want: beautiful dresses, pearls and jewels for his stepdaughters, and a branch from the hazel tree for Cinderella. Cinderella plants the hazel spring on her mother's grave, where it grows into a beautiful tree after her tears fall on it. A little white bird would fly to it and toss the girl what she wanted. While Shavit's argument about learning a lesson is true, the lesson Shavit offers is complicated by close reading of the tale. Instead of adult reliance and obedience being fully celebrated, there are times in the story where it is punished, and other times wherein independence is celebrated. After all, Cinderella is able to achieve her happy ending because she chooses when and who she listens to. She listens to her mother and up until a certain point, to her stepmother. She does not blindly rely on adult figures, and is independent enough to pursue what she wants, bringing up the notion of independence being allowed as long as there is desire. In contrast, her stepsisters blindly follow their mother, going as fall as mutilating themselves, yet only receive further punishment as their eyes are pecked out. This then depicts the relationship between adult and child in "Cinderella": although reliance and obedience is important, a child must not blindly follow adult figures and should learn to be independent – when to do either, on the other hand, is something not clearly defined in the tale. The relationship between adult and child is not so clear–cut, as the notions of "good," "evil" and desire complicate how a child should act. The ambiguity between when to obey and rely on adults, and when to make your own choices indicates that at times, the child has to make complex decisions. This is important to consider as it paints how child readers view their own relationships with adults, possibly even empowering them as it reveals that the child does not simply have to obey, but is allowed to have a choice in that ... The splendid glass slippers that are known with Cinderella, are another adaptation that was made after the original story was first written by the Grimm Brothers. Before the festival "the birds [in the tree] threw...slippers embroidered with silk and silver" (Grimm, 83). After Cinderella loses her slipper the last night of the festival, the prince goes to her house and asks for the stepsisters to try on the slipper that he has. When the first sister tries on the slipper her toes will not fit into the slipper. Her mother tells her "'Cut the toe off; when you are Queen you will have no more need to go on foot.'" (Grimm, 85). When the second sister tries on the slipper after the prince finds out that she cut off her toes, her heel will not fit into the slipper. The stepmother tells the second daughter, "'Cut off a bit of your heel; when you are Queen you will have no more need to go on foot.'" (Grimm, 85). After each of the sisters tricks the prince, small birds tell the prince that he is carrying the wrong girl on his horse; they affirm to him the he is carrying his princess when Cinderella is finally able to wear her lost slipper (Grimm, 86). The Brothers Grimm wrote hundreds of fairy tales in their life time and in these works they used their childhood experiences as reference. Because of the hardships they faced growing up their tales take on a more gruesome approach to fairy tales. A true hero in the eyes of Jacob and Wilhelm, their mother single handedly overcame opposition in their family, just as their sister did growing up with five brothers. (Grimm, 11) The sentiment of being abandoned as children unlocked a new territory of potential as their creative juices began to surge. "Child abandonment is a many–faceted concept within myth, folktale, and literature," and the Brothers Grimm explored this concept in great detail (Garry, 3). As they began to express themselves through literature, male figures, such as fathers, were often dismissed as the females stole the spotlight in their fairy tales. "Some modern psychologists have argued that [their] harsh family background influenced the ways the Brothers Grimm interpret and present their tales" (Grimm, 15). Without a prominent male figure growing up, they only had their mother to look up to and to idealize as the strong willed individual who never gave up despite all the privation send her way. The Brothers Grimm incorporate their own perspectives to generally recognized fairy tales, often adding a twist and a more callous feel to them. In attempts to help unify Germany the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, traveled throughout the country; listening, collecting, and writing down oral stories and fables from various regions in Germany. They believed that preserving oral culture and stories from various places in Germany would nationalize Germany by having a collective culture rather than many different cultures. With seven total editions and a dictionary, preserving culture and unifying Germany was their life goal. Writing down these oral stories and collecting them assisted in the formation of Germany as a nation rather than multiple different imagined communities. Most nations have a shared common culture and an official language. The Grimm brothers helped usher in an age of oneness in Germany and in doing so, Germany became a more unified nation. At the time that the Grimm brothers were collecting their stories, Germany was many different groups of people, differing by region. They were not what we consider today a nation. "A nation is an imagined political community– and imagined as both inherently limited and 2 sovereign." (1. • 33. The Grimm Brothers: Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Introduction: I chose to research fairytales, specifically fairytales by the Grimm brothers. Fairytales are short stories that tend to consist of fantasy people, places, and objects. Many of these consist of fairies or magical creatures. Most fairy tales start off with "Once upon a time", or "In a faraway land". Many times in fairytales objects are enchanted and can talk or move. The most common characters in a fairy tale are prince and princess. A lot of fairy tales are retold throughout generations. As a child I was told fairy tales as bedtime stories. I grew to love Disney movies which are popular for remaking fairytales such as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. To this day I still enjoy remade fairy tales such as "Rapunzel" which was ... These characteristics have been common throughout fairytales for as long as people can remember. "Fairytales, as they exist today, took shape in sixteenth–century Italy" (Bottigheimer, par. 11) The Grimm brothers were known for creating fairytales for children but scrutinized for them being so gruesome. "Friends and associates of the Grimm brothers expressed their concern over the exposure of children to the household tales" (Einfeld 81). Although the Grimm brothers saw their stories as educational and having morals, many argue that the stories were not appropriate for children and should not be told to them. The Grimm brothers did start an argument though stating, "Fright was seen as an effective disciplinary measure for children" (Einfeld 91). By freighting kids they would learn lessons from their fairytales and remember them as they grew older. Frightening acts took place in many of the Grimm tales such as Rapunzel's lover becoming blind by the evil Gothel while trying to visit her in the tower. The fairytales that the Grimm brothers created have over time been retold in less gruesome manner to educate children and provide entertainment. Fairytales by the Grimm brothers were not only gruesome but also have a common characteristic of most fairytales, which is having evil characters or villains that are played by a women figure. Starting out as a story of a girl locked in a tower, it has evolved into countless versions. The most common adaption of the Grimm Brothers' story is the disney movie Tangled. This movie debuted in 2010 and was a hit. Overall, the Grimm Brothers story has become iconic for it's history and also its adaptations. The story Rapunzel was published in 1812 for the first time ever by The Grimm Brothers, in Germany. During this time period, the mindset of the German people was different than what it is today. The people of Germany believed in magic, whereas today they know that it is not real. The reason that most of these Grimm Brother's stories are based on magic, including Rapunzel, is because of this. Also at this time in Germany, most of the people were commoners, middle class or even poor. That is why these stories are set in common time and involve common people, for the most part. In Rapunzel, she is born into a poor family and is a commoner herself. The Grimm Brothers themselves have a very interesting history. Although most people believe that the Grimm Brothers are responsible for writing their fairytales, they are not. • 39. The Grimm Brothers Essay The Grimm Brothers Any good fairy tale may captivate a child's (or adult's) mind, but few could argue that, to be truly enchanting, a tale needs great illustrations. Two of the most influential fairy tale tellers in history were the German Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. Both very intelligent scholars, they knew how to spin a tale in the most effective way possible. However, they had plenty of work just dealing with the tales' text, so in the area of illustration, they let their younger brother Ludwig take over, beginning with the second edition of their fairy tales. He worked in many styles and media, too, ranging from rough sketches to detailed engravings, from blurred watercolors to meticulous drawings. One of Ludwig's greatest artistic gifts was his ability to give very real personalities to the faces of his subjects by using various facial expressions and a masterful command of the different positions and characteristics of the eyes. This ability, along with his interest in nature and his use of a myriad of subjects, including all types of people and landscapes, lent itself well to the illustration of fairy tales. The second edition of the first volume of the Grimms' Fairy Tales marked Ludwig's first involvement with fairy tales. Achim von Arnim, who lent money, editing and publishing services, and advice to the Grimms, had only one criticism of the enormously successful first edition of Fairy Tales: it needed illustrations. The logical choice to fill this void in the second edition was Ludwig, who made a series of engravings to accompany the text published in 1819. Since that book was published, nearly every ... It all began, 200 years ago when this seemingly ordinary pair of brothers and German librarians put together one of the most influential work of folklore in Germany, Europe and now the world. Wilhelm Carl and Jacob Ludwig Grimm, the brother's interest in literature was fostered when they were at the University of Marburg in the early 1800's was when they were encouraged to collect popular German folklore stories and other material by their law professor, Friedrich Carl von Savigny. Savigny was an important figure in the nationalist Romantic Movement that called for Germany to be culturally and politically united. Morals Of The Brothers Grimm Before the Brothers Grimm transcribed what is known today as one of the most recognized fairytales ever recorded, it was being passed down orally from generation to generation at every corner of the globe. Various versions of Cinderella's myth can be found in almost every culture in the world, all very distinct with their own specific qualities, reflecting each society's predominant interpretations of religious themes. For instance, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's works were known to promote their Prussian culture and language, such as "Aschenputtel", their German version of Cinderella. Most of their adjustments were heavily influenced by the criticism of their fellow countrymen, their audience, and their Christian beliefs. The Brothers Grimm used a fearful and hopeful tone, syntax and story details in Aschenputtel to convey the moral of the tale, "Virtue will be rewarded, Iniquity will be punished" (Perrault, pg. 162), while still upholding the fairytale conventions. Fairytales were often used to convey a moral, social or political lesson. "Aschenputtel" was no different. The Brothers Grimm "expressed the hope that their collection would serve as a "manual of manners" (Erziehungsbuch)" (Tatar, pg.456) for children, a host that would transmit moral lessons for life. • 55. Comparing Cinderella And The Brothers Grimm Folk tales and fairy tales are stories that have been told to us since we were kids. Some stories are passed down from generation to generation and change along the way. Fairy tales as Cinderella have many different variants depending on the origin of where the story was created. A Cinderella story in the United States differs from a Cinderella story from Russia. "Cinderella" is nothing of a mere template of a specific folk tale. Cinderella is a story of a daughter who is looked down upon by her evil stepmother and her stepsisters. Her stepmother does not allow her to go to a ball announced by a prince, but Cinderella eventually finds a way of going and she marries the prince. Charles Perrault and The Brothers Grimm are both famous for their variations of this story. Perrault is famous for adding many elements to the story such as the fairy godmother and the glass slipper. Grimm is famous for his gruesome version of Cinderella that ended in the eyes of the sisters getting pecked out by birds. Despite both stories being similar, Perrault and Grimm show many aspects of the story that are sparingly different. Both stories consisted of an evil stepmother, but there is a father in both stories who play a different role. In Perrault's version of the story, he says "The poor girl bore all patiently, and dared not complain to her father, who would have scolded her if she had done so, for his wife governed him entirely" (Perrault, 236). • 57. Grimm Brothers Cinderella I choose to revise the Grimm brothers' Cinderella because I felt the tale left the most negative impact on young girls. It was the tale that infuriated me the most for its emphasis on beauty as the only element that brings value to women. I can't exactly claim that this tale is the root of all beauty problems but it has certainly played a role, being as it is the most popular tale worldwide with countless revisions. Characters such as Cinderella make women feel like they have to be the upmost beautiful women in order to marry a prince. Thus, women constantly subject themselves to pain and mutilation in order to reach impossible beauty standards. Women pay for expensive cosmetic surgeries, plaster their faces with make–up, do extreme diets, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I moved the focus from beauty to education. I made it very clear to never mention whether or not Liberella was beautiful or not. It could be that Liberella was very beautiful but I did not want to bring any attention to that because it doesn't matter if she is or not, the only thing that matters is her intellectual mind. A norm that is express in the Grimm's tale is that there is no price too high for beauty. If you have to cut your toe or heel, then so be it, all in name of the prince. The stepmother says, "Once you become queen, you won't have to walk anymore" (Grimm 83). I removed this because it is a horrible message that teaches girls they are just objects to be looked at. Liberella does not dream of being a man's trophy wife, she dreams of being a doctor who will fix cuts like the one the step–sisters did in the original Grimm's tale. A norm that I did keep in my tale was the female competition. The two bully sisters, Jessica and Lauren, constantly compare themselves to Liberella by saying stuff such as, "She's not even pretty! We are way prettier than her!" (Torres 3). Liberella doesn't feel the need to compare herself to those girls, but Lauren and Jessica do because they want to bring other girls below them so that they can always want to be at the top of the beauty hierarchy. That is what the obsession of beauty does to young girls. The original Grimm's Cinderella teaches that the one who is the most beautiful will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Grimm Brothers And Cinderella Comparison Many have wondered why all Disney tails end in lies. Well here's what actually happened, Cinderella a sweet girl, talks to mice and lives happily ever after. Yeah her, her story is actually really messed up and takes a more sinister turn rather than a friendly kids story. The Grimm Brothers version has some major differences as oppose to the Disney version. In the Grimm brothers story we meet a young girl named Cinderella and her mother dies when she is very young, Cinderella ends up living with her father and his new wife and her two daughters that are very beautiful on the outside but rotten to the core on the inside. They treat their darling stepsister like a slave or a maid by taking away all of her extravagant clothes with old ragged clothes and took away her comfortable shoes and gave her back old wooden shoes that would give anyone blisters. One day her father came back from of his trips and brought back the two step sisters what they had asked for material things of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So the sisters don't fit into Cinderella's slipper so they both decide to cut off their toes and heels, it's gets worse after the prince finds out that the shoe is really Cinderella's they go off and get married and the sister get their eyes gauged out by birds. 'The Brother Grimms Version Of Rapunzel' The Brother Grimms' version of Rapunzel tells the story of a girl who was taken from her family as soon as she was born and kept in custody until adulthood. When examining the story from a feminist perspective, it becomes apparent that Rapunzel is a character that is given no choices of her own. She is forced to follow all of the enchantress' instructions and is not able to live her own life until a male character enters to save her. Rapunzel was taken by the enchantress as soon as her mother had given birth to her. She was taken away due to the fact that her father had given her up due to fear in a certain situation. Right off the bat of this story, both Rapunzel and her mother are treated as objects. The father completely disregards the fact that Rapunzel is a human being and she is his and his wife's daughter. Not even consulting his wife before making this decision. I can't help but wonder why he didn't consult his wife before giving up the rights to their child, it's as if he feels that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The enchantress kept her hidden, kept her as her own little secret. This shows that the enchantress was aware that many people would have enjoyed Rapunzel, so she locked her away in the tower. The story reads, "Rapunzel grew into the most beautiful child under the sun. When she was twelve years old, the enchantress shut her into a tower, which lay in a forest, and had neither stairs nor door, but quite at the top was a little window." The preceding quotation poses the question of what if Rapunzel did not grow up to be a beautiful child? If Rapunzel had not grown up to be beautiful, would the enchantress have treated her differently? And what if this child was not the female Rapunzel was, would the enchantress still lock her away in the tall tower away from everyone that could view her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Grimm Brothers Cinderella In the famous story of Cinderella, what do you think is the theme or main lesson of Cinderella? The theme of Cinderella is bad people never succeed and good people will always prevail. The Grimm Brothers Cinderella presents the theme of the Cinderella Archetype the best. The three different examples that best present the theme in Grimm Brothers Cinderella are a bird takes out both of the stepsisters' eyes for mistreating Cinderella poorly, making fun of Cinderella and not giving her a dress , and making Cinderella be their maid and in the end the stepsisters' miserably live with no eyes and with either no heels or no toes. A bird takes out Cinderella's stepsisters' eyes for their wickedness and falsehood to Cinderella. In the beginning the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you were to compare Charles Perrault with the Grimm Brothers they both wrote in the beginning that the stepsisters' treat her poorly but in the end it is different because in the Grimm Brothers the sisters get consequences from birds. In the Charles Perrault Cinderella they forgave Cinderella for all of their wickedness and Cinderella accepts the apologization and gives them lodgings in the palace and 2 lords of the court. Only in the Grimm Brothers Cinderella, she has to pick up lentils that her stepsisters' throw down for her to pick up. The Charles Perrault Cinderella difference that was stated affects the theme because since the sisters apologized to Cinderella she gave them a lodging and 2 lords which disagrees with the theme a little bit because the theme states that bad people never succeed. The first part doesn't work because the stepsisters' didn't get a consequence in the Charles Perrault. In the Grimm Brothers one they did and in the Charles Perrault they got to live in the palace. Thatt is kind of like succeeding so that crosses out that bad people never succeed but the good people succeeding still works because in the end Cinderella gets married in both stories. • 67. Comparing Perrault And The Grimm Brothers When it comes to picking authors, who interest me in the field of fairytales I would have to choose Perrault and the Grimm brothers. Even though one is from the 17th century and the other two are from the 19th century, they go about telling stories a little differently while also having some similarities in the tales they tell. Both have morals for each tale. Some are weaker than others while others are also stronger than others as well. The fairy tale I would be writing about would be little red riding hood. The little red riding hood that I remember reading about when I was little was saved by a woodsman. However, coming into this class and reading the original, I found it interested that both tales ended differently. Perrault who was known as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the 17th century the protestant era did not exist. During the 17th century it was noticed that a child's youth was becoming more of a distinguished stage in life that was considered a critical base of the development of character (Zipes, 36). While Perrault was writing, he had to focus and come up with a way to teach adults and kids the same morals. In Perrault's tales, he clearly states the characteristics a woman needs are to be beautiful, polite, graceful, industrious, and properly groomed while also knowing how to control herself always (Zipes, 40). So basically, just waiting for the right man to come in and save the day, which was fine for back in the 17th century but in today's time, no women wants to wait for somebody to pretend to save the day. • 69. Charles Perrault And The Brothers Grimm And Grimm Brothers Although there are many versions of virtually every fairy–tale known to man, not all of the different adaptations are contrasting. The bases of stories tend to remain the same, due to the fact that the main plots are unvarying. Throughout history, these famous fairytales have been passed on by word of mouth. The two most well–known authors who wrote their interpretations of fairy–tales are French author Charles Perrault (1628–1703), and The Brothers Grimm / Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859). Although Perrault wrote down his thoughts much earlier than the Grimm Brothers, the brothers appear to have gained more credit and fame from their works. One of the darkest and most intriguing work of theirs is the story of Bluebeard. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike in the version written by Perault, the Grimm Brothers take a creative path in which it is not Bluebeard's appearance that makes others feel on edge when he is around, it is evident that that the reason people find his presence discomforting is far deeper than his exterior. The list of variances could go on and on, however, the main difference is the color of the man's beard. In the fairy–tale written by Perrault, Bluebeard indeed has a blue beard. However, this is not the case in the tale written by the Grimm Brothers, where in reality Bluebeard's beard is veritably black. Not only are there evident differences in the information presented in the writing, but in fact, the style of writing is much different as well. With these main variances in the ideas of the story, one may think that the tale of Bluebeard may differ between the two different versions, however that is not necessarily the case. When reading the adaptation by Perrault, the reader may find the story slightly complex and confusing. "They ceased not to extol and envy the happiness of their friend" (Perrault 2). It can be noted that Perrault uses words that may seem to be very formal and professional sounding, however, the reader can easily find themselves getting lost in the ocean of complex words and phrases. The writing of the Brothers Grimm, however, is much more understandable and to the point. They shortened the scene where Bluebeard's wife invites her friends over, which is the ... Fairy tales engage children with mythical creatures and charming royal characters that they admire all the while holding deeper meanings and valuable life lessons. These classic themes have been enjoyed and passed down from generation to generation since the morals and lessons withheld in the tales can be used by people of any age in any point in time. "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm is an example of one of these classic fairy tales whose story survives today. Today's story and renditions of "Rapunzel" are derived from the 1857 publication by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in their collection of fairy tales and folktales, Children and Household Tales; however, ideas for their published story had much more primitive origins. The original motif of hair being used as a ladder dates all the way back to the 10th century when a Persian poet by the name of Ferdowsi wrote that, "Roudabe offers to lower her hair to her true love, Zal, to use as a ladder to climb up on to the roof of the women 's enclosure," as Laura Getty describes in her article "Maidens and their guardians: Reinterpreting the `Rapunzel ' tale" (16). Much of "Rapunzel"'s plot is influenced by oral German translations of the Italian fairy tale Petrosinella by Giambattista Basile in 1634. Similarly to how Rapunzel is locked away in a tower by a fairy as a consequence for her parents stealing rapunzel plant from the fairy's garden, Petrosinella, or Parsley in English, is taken by an ogress in consequence for her mother taking Parsley from the her garden. The ogress then proceeds to "put the poor girl into a tower, which she caused to arise by her art, and which had neither gate nor ladder, but only a little window, through which she ascended and descended by means of Parsley 's hair, which was very long," (Ashliman). • 73. Grimm Brothers Literary Analysis From 1812 to 1857, the Grimm Brothers collected and shared stories that continue to be told to this day. Middle class women that were recognized for their storytelling abilities would visit the Grimm brothers, who would then transcribe the women's stories (Thury, Eva M., and Margaret Klopfle Devinney 578) that were then edited and published. The different stories the brothers collected ranged from fairy tales, horror stories, tall tales and comical accounts (578). Foreign rule created a strong desire within the countrymen to recall their Germanic roots to figure their cultural worth (578). This enhanced the Grimm brother's purpose of sharing these stories to preserve living artifacts from ancient times. It was believed that preserving native ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 75. A Brief Look at the Brothers Grimm How many little girls dream of being Snow White? How much money did Disney's Tangled make? What little girl hasn't dressed up as Cinderella or dreamed of meeting her very own prince charming? These popular fairy tales were created by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Their primary motivation when starting their collection of fairy tales was to preserve culture rather than entertain, but entertain is what they did. These fairy tales, and versions of them, have remained popular for a very long time, outlasting most other works of literature. The Brothers Grimm adapted these well– known stories from around Europe to reflect their own personal views, Germanize them and remove some of the more disturbing details of the original stories. In the same way, these fairy tales have been altered again and again to be acceptable to society. Fairy tales similar in theme can be found across the world. The Brothers Grimm versions are the most familiar because their emphasis on German culture and Christian morals is very similar to American culture and values. The adaptability and skillful incorporation of morals and issues considered socially unacceptable in an entertaining story, has allowed the Brother's fairy tales to last throughout the ages. One of the most popular of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales is Snow White. In the original version, the theme was that of a mother–daughter rivalry, but the Grimm brothers changed many elements so that it would more closely reflect their values. In the ...
