Cause And Consequences Of Homelessness In The United States
Homelessness As I drove through the streets of New Orleans I constantly see homeless people sleeping in tents under the overpass on Claiborne Avenue
commonly named" tent city". I wondered what were the psychological reasons of those that ended up homeless, the statistics, causes, and consequences
of homelessness combined with the effect it has on society. There are various reasons that homelessness exists in the United States, the most common
reason is due to a lack of affordable housing. Homelessness is more predominant in urban areas than in rural regions of the U.S. According to the
Department of Housing and Urban Development, approximately 578,424 people were identified as homeless in the United States as of January 2014.

These sudden and unfortunate events displaced millions of people and led to an even larger increase in the homeless population. The Great Depression
in 1929 was another catastrophic event in American history that led to major economic hardships for millions of citizens that further propelled
homelessness. Although these historical events are from the past the residual effects are impacting the U.S. society and culture today. Slavery was a
part of the United States since the beginning of the American Revolution, which placed a racial division between the whites and blacks. Although
slavery was abolished during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the effects of racism lingered continuously and are sadly still affecting many African
Americans today in certain ways. After World War II, America improved greatly; in terms of economic wealth. This was a time of financial prosperity
and innovative technological advancements. Caucasians in America benefitted greatly from the country's newfound wealth; however African
Americans were not so lucky. They found themselves segregated from the whites and prohibited from certain rights. Some of these rights involved
housing and employment opportunities. While the Caucasians in the U.S. had access to their preferred employment and housing, African Americans
and other minorities were not granted these same rights.

Homelessness in the United States
The topic I have decided to focus Genius Hour on is how to solve the problem of homelessness in the United States. More than 3.5 million people
experience homelessness each year. And in 2013, there was a high of 2.5 million homeless children. But why should people care? People should care
because if they ever went into foreclosure, they could be secure in knowing that they would still have a place to stay in and would not be forced to go
on the streets. A solution to eliminatinghomelessness would be incorporating some socialism factors of government into our federal government. I
consider this a sensible solution because our federal government has a double security system that prevents our government

Homelessness is not a secret and has not been for decades as it increases in astonishing numbers. These outrageous numbers of people who are
without, homes and have no protection against such a damning situation which is cause by the increase of joblessness, coupled with a plummeting
economy. Why ask, why is so many of our citizens living this way? The question should be proposed by our government, how can we as a society fix
our homelessness in the United States?
Homelessness is a product of our entire country which is a direct reflection of our economy and there a lack of insight to those who have little to no

Without the mean to afford a stable way of life, people are sleeping in parks on benches, underneath bridges, in the wood under make shift shelters
and on the streets. Some are fortunate enough to find a shelter, however, meal times and an entry and exit time frames are in place to prevent over

is remaining America's who do not have a choice. Numerous homeless people do not want to live homeless or in poverty. Our government should
provide a service to make the homeless whole. We do not now the situation they are in. Homelessness is sad to see in my opinion and I feel future
generations will view this horrible situation in a different manner as viewed in the current society. Homelessness is a subject that has many different

The thought of being homeless is a terrifying to anyone, but sadly for many it is a reality. I could never imagine not knowing where I was going to
sleep for the night, especially not as a teenager. Teenage years are a struggle for everyone then adding homelessness into it gives an entirely different
set of issues for someone to be presented with. Teenage pregnancy is occurring throughout the United States, and it is a stressful time for everyone
involved. The teen mother has to not only worry about herself, but now for the child that is growing inside of her. She will have to face the rude
comments and looks she gets not only from her peers, but also random strangers on the streets. Much like pregnant teenagers in school, there are
pregnant homeless teens: "Studies suggest that pregnant and parenting homeless youth and young adults face even greater social, health, and mental
health challenges than homeless peers who are not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And of these 90 pregnant and homeless teens 56% had custody of their child. (Narendorf et al., 2016, p. 200–201). I personally find this disturbing,
how can someone with no home have custody of their child? Where is this child getting their meals? Where are they sleeping at night? What is this
child wearing? I don't personally understand how a homeless teen mother can be meeting the needs of a child. What is also disturbing to me was the
state many of the homeless mothers themselves were left in: "Among those mothers whose children were in their custody, nearly half met the criteria
for mental health disorders such as major depressive disorder (47%), antisocial personality disorder (47%), posttraumatic stress disorder (11%), and
alcohol abuse" (Narendorf et al., 2016, p. 201). Half of these mothers are suffering themselves with mental disorders, how are they deemed well

Everyone knows of homeless people, but not as many people actually know about homeless people. In the U.S. there are over 3.5 million people
who face homelessness each year. Many factors play into why people become or end up homeless and it is different for everyone especially the
various age groups of the homeless population; homeless people are from all walks of life including minors, adults, and elders. As sad as it is the
truth is that people under 18 years make up 39% of the total homeless population and 40% of those minors identify as LGBT. While the contributing
reasons to homelessness is seemingly never ending the main cause of youth homelessness is physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse from parents or
guardians. For these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Contrary to belief shelters are not a walk in and receive housing type of deal, but rather there is a process of calling the shelter and being put on a
waiting list which often times take much longer than what the caller was hoping for. With this in place and the fact that shelters are allowed to turn
away homeless people, most teens are rejected housing and sent elsewhere. Pat LaMarche says in her article " when a family presents itself to a
homeless shelter and a teenager is present, the shelter agrees to take the mom and younger kids if the teenaged children . . . leave them and go
elsewhere," (LaMarche, 1). So even when the whole family is homeless the teenager is still turned away and must go off on their own. Another subject
that often times causes young people to become homeless is emancipation. When a teenager who lives within foster care turns 18 they are freed to
face the world by themselves. It's more like they are kicked out. In many instances the newlyfound adult won't have anyplace to go to or end up moving
into a bad housing situation only to find themselves without shelter shortly after. California's own Department of Social Services concluded, "65
percent of emancipating youth lack safe and affordable housing at

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of poverty on young children and their families. The focus will be on homelessness and how the
child is affected in two major settings: the home, or lack of, and school. In both of these settings, children are impacted by different social forces and
must push through barriers that are set before them given their circumstance. "Living without permanent, long–term housing creates a number of
stressors for children and families, but being homeless can be particularly detrimental to the healthy development of young children" (McCoy–Roth,

language, gross motor, fine motor, social) compared to only 16 percent of their housed peers. In addition, compared with their peers, a higher
proportion of homeless preschoolers had a number of developmental delays" (McCoy–Roth, Mackintosh, & Murphey, 2012). This lends itself to an
ever–continuous cycle of poverty, violence, and low education, many times leading to homelessness. When families have very low income, their
children go hungry twice as much as their classmates who are not at the poverty level. Missing meals causes these children to have poor physical and
emotional health, and limited opportunities to socially and educationally interact with peers (McCoy–Roth, Mackintosh, & Murphey, 2012). Children
in this population have a hard time making friends as they are accustomed to having little to no privacy and experience higher levels of anxiety
(Powell, 2012). "Many homeless children lack quality experiences in early learning environments. These inadequate learning experiences create an
additional barrier to healthy growth in all developmental domains" (Powell, 2012). As early educators and advocates for young children, we need to
be available to families in our area and play integral roles that can make a difference in their lives. Some ways that I could do that in a student's life
would be to assure that the family's basic needs are met by striving to make a deeper connection, provide outside

During the 1980's the number of "homeless" people, those without a house in which to reside, increased at an alarming rate. Many analysts have given
much time and thought as to the reasons that this phenomenon occurred. They cite economic instability and government policies with facts and figures
to support their work. Beyond the research and cold statistics that explain this event, are the victims, and those that worked to help relieve their hardship

The Cause Of Homelessness In The United States
What is homelessness and who does it affect? Homelessness means to have no home or permanent place of residence. Homelessness affects hundreds
of thousands of people today. In the United States alone 750,000 people experience homelessness every night. 100,000 New Yorkers experience
homelessness each year. Each night, nearly 32,000 homeless individuals sleep in the New York shelter system.
What causes homelessness? There are many reasons why people become homeless. These reasons include poverty, disabilities (untreated mental
illness), substance abuse/drugs, domestic violence, housing, gambling addictions, low income, destroyed homes (fires), and lose of jobs. Until recently,
the attacks of September 11, 2001 has greatly impacted the homeless

people got to where they are and became homeless? Does that person ever realize that, in contrast to being lazy and ignorant fools, those homeless
people are humans just like him or her who just so happened to run into bad luck and end up on the streets? Homeless people do not ask to live on the

One out of seven people in the United States is in danger of facing hunger (The National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness,
"Overview of Homelessness in America"). People living in poverty are the ones most at risk of homelessness, and those who are most likely to
experience poverty are also more likely to face homelessness. These people include the elderly, youth, families, individuals, and others. Homelessness
is significantly caused by the lack of affordable housing and the few housing assistance programs. Housing wages are higher than the hourly wages
earned by renters. Poor people are often unable to pay for housing, food, child care, health care, and education altogether. Because of the limited
resources they have, they can only pay for some necessities. As a result, housing is given up since it takes up a large portion of their incomes. Minimum
wage has decreased since the late 1960s, and minimum and low wage workers cannot afford food and shelter. The high unemployment rates have
resulted in jobs being hard to find and obtain; and even if jobs are found, that does not mean those people automatically escape poverty. "The
declining value and availability of public assistance is another source of increasing poverty and homelessness and many families leaving welfare
struggle to get medical care, food, and housing as a result of loss of benefits, low wages, and unstable employment" (National Coalition for the

Poverty and Homelessness in the United States Poverty in America is a subject that though everybody recognizes is existent, most do not pay
attention to very often. In 2010 the poverty line for a family of four was $22,314.00 and 15.1% of Americans were living off of less than that
(Tavernise, 2011). While 15.1% is a high number to begin with, the truth is that many more people are living on the verge ofhomelessness. Countless
families are split up every night with children going to a friend's house or an extended family member's house to ensure that everyone has somewhere
to sleep. These people are called the "hidden homeless" by the Charlotte Observer (Whitesides, 2011). Even more people are either living in tent cities

While reading about homelessness through the media, one must be sure to realize that even the articles written include discourses and also that
they omit details in order to keep the attention of the readers. In Seattle the program that is to allow people living in cars to spend the night in
church parking lots seems like a great idea that will help out dozens of people. Something to consider though, is the fact that many people are not
willing to open up a safe haven, such as a church, to potentially dangerous. Even though many people try to go through their days without judging
people, it is inevitable to have discourses towards people. In America people grow up hearing stories about how if you give a homeless person
money that he or she will most likely use it on beer or drugs. These discourses need to be eliminated in order for the country's problem to be solved. The
United States is known as a country full of opportunities, a place where anyone can succeed but behind that visage is a reality that is becoming worse
and worse as time goes on. While people go throughout their days pretending that everyone lives a comfortable life in a warm home, the truth is that at
any given moment there are thousands of Americans who are homeless. Problems that have been existent since the beginning of the United States have
contributed to this ever–growing problem that is prominent now.

information could be analyzed to help people know the cause of people become homeless, how long people become homeless, what exactly homeless
people need, and the effect of mainstream's support. Government already saw some positive influence of these programs. The number of family

In 2005 an estimated 100 million people were homeless worldwide and as many as 1.6 billion without proper housing (global homelessness).
Homelessness is an often overlooked problem; people do not realize the extremities of this issue. Unfortunately, Columbus, GA has one of the highest
homelessness rates in GA (homelessness report). People unintentionally disregard them every day on their way to work, school, and home. They are
regular people just like everyone else, yet no one takes care of them. Unfortunate situations can happen to anyone, and when they do people reach out
and do what they need to take care of them; so why do they not do the same for the homeless? This is a problem that desperately needs help. In
Boston, they have an organization called Housing First. This organization reaches out to the homeless communities, finds them apartments, helps them
get a job and provides a way for them to get their life back on track. In Columbus, we need to start something similar called Community First.
Homeless People are constantly blamed themselves for their situation, but often times it has nothing to do with anything they have done. People can

Homelessness. It's a problem all over the United States, a problem all over Missouri, and a problem all over the entire St. Louis area. About 30% of

individuals do have jobs, in fact almost half (44%) of homeless people have jobs. This shows that there is more to homelessness than just not having a

What is meant by homelessness in the United States? Homelessness is something that can be temporary or chronic. It is when an individual or family
does not have and cannot afford a suitable place to live long term. Things like staying in a shelter, one room facilities (motel) or staying with a family
member or friend does not mean you are not homeless. If you cannot afford suitable long term accommodations yourself, then you are considered
homeless. When you are referring to youth homelessness they are considered homeless if they do not have parents to care for them or are not in the
foster or legal system receiving care.
Complications of being Homeless. Being homeless comes with many complications that lead to the continuation of having no home. When you are
homeless you are more susceptible to things such as infection and other health problems. Homeless youth that have no parental ties are less likely
to graduate. You are also at a greater risk of physical harm being caused to you by someone else such as rape, human trafficking or assault. If you
do not have somewhere and some way to clean up and to clean your cloths then it is next to impossible to go for job interviews. This causes you to
remain in a homeless situation. You are also more susceptible to drug and alcohol use as a way to cope with your situation. According to the National
Conference of State Legislator website "It is estimated that 5,000 unaccompanied youth die each year as a result

Ending Homelessness
Homelessness in the United States can be ended, not just maintained. Allot of cities now have plans to eradicate homelessness. Homelessness and
housing instability are large issues that afflict a diverse demographic such as: Families, youth, veterans, and chronically homeless single male adults.
Ending homelessness may require specialized solutions that are specific to individual needs. Factors like these make defeating homelessness a difficult
task. Although solutions exist for some of the demographics, such as housing for chronically homeless adults, scaling up best practices remains a
challenge. For other subpopulations, such as transitional aged youth, evidence–based interventions need to be developed. In this paper we argue that
ending homelessness is a Grand Challenge that is big, important, and compelling–one that the profession of social work should be adopt. Meeting this
challenge will require a focused, organized response from social work researchers, clinicians, and policymakers. Ending homelessness will require
innovation and interdisciplinary or cross–sector collaboration. Key words: Housing First, Permanent Supportive Housing, rapid re–housing, prevention,
poverty. The notion that homelessness in the United States can be ended, rather than managed (Mangano, 2002; National Alliance to End
Homelessness, 2012), represents a fundamental shift in expectations from the 1980s and '90s. Since the early 2000s, researchers, policymakers,

Homelessness in America
"On a single night in January 2015, there were 564,708 people experiencing homelessness in the United States. Sixty–nine percent of those who were
homeless were in sheltered locations and 31 percent were found in unsheltered locations" (Facts). People living in poverty are most likely have a high
risk becoming homeless. Many other reasons why becoming homeless is due to economic conditions such as unemployment and increasing housing
costs (Why). In addition, with all the new economic rules they are at higher risk of losing what they have already. In certain areas, homeless people
are families, single mothers, and children are a major issue in homelessness. However, the number of homeless is families who has children had
increased more over the past decade or so. It is the fastest growing division of the homeless population. The problem of homelessness in America is
growing drastically. It is an issue that can strike at anyone in each moment and least expect when the situation occurs. Therefore, this should be
addressed as a major crisis than an inconvenient issue. The National Alliance to End Homelessness and the Government should come together to create
a solution to end all homelessness around America for once and for all.

Usually the government wants the best for the people of its nation, and provides for their needs. Shockingly, this is not the case in Yemen, where
families with young children are left to defend themselves. Specifically homosexual men are being targeted by their own nation, and terrorist groups.
The conflict in Yemen is in the most dire of situations as innocent people are dying, becoming homeless, and getting arrested. This is an urgent problem
because many innocent people are being victimized in Yemen, and have nobody on their side.
To start with, innocent people given harsh punishments, some even being killed simply because of their sexuality, by the government and terrorists.

refugees, there are far more innocent people such as families with young children suffering from terror attacks, starvation, and homelessness in their

The topic of homelessness is not widely talked about in our communities due to, lack of knowledge, considered to be a lost cause, ignorance or
unwilling to get involved and help. Yet, everyday we are faced with some form of homelessness. When you exit the freeway, drive through your
neighborhoods or outside a place of business. In the state of California, the effects on homelessness continues to be a ongoing challenge for us. So,
what are some of the causes for one to be homeless?
In 2010, California prison system released more than 125,000 former prisoners into our neighborhoods and continue to release them every year,

For many of us, shelter and food are things that may come easy. However, the same cannot be said for many people in the world today. While we
complain about the weather or the food not tasting the way it should, someone out there today may not even have a place to stay or food to eat.
Homelessness is an issue that we've all heard of and probably witnessed as well. Most people will point fingers and say that it's the individual's fault
for always doing drugs and not having a job. However, that isn't true for most cases. A lot of people are not aware of the correlations and causations,
magnitude, and demographics of homelessness. Often times, we are more focused on whose fault it is rather than what actually caused the problem and

The factors that tie in with veteran's homelessness have to do with the fact that a large number of them are affected by post–traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD), which is a mental health problem that is developed after experiencing a life–threatening event, such as combat, natural disaster, car accident,
or sexual assault. Because of this, veterans are more likely to turn to substance abuse in order to escape from their PTSD. As well, the lack of family
and support system takes a toll on them. On top of that, they have a hard time coming back to the workforce because the military jobs and training put
them at a disadvantage when it comes to regular employment. However, as of recent statistics, the numbers of homeless veterans have actually been
decreasing. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs, "There was a 17 percent decline in the estimated number of homeless Veterans
nationwide between January 2015 and January 2016." There has always been some kind of push for the government to do more in helping veterans.
Based on these numbers, it seems that they have finally made an effort to help out veterans and the results are looking

Homelessness In The United States
Can you imagine if you had no house and had to sleep on the street in the United States? You are sick and need to see the doctor. What do you do?
People who have no house are called homeless people. When they don't feel well and need to see a physician, they do not know where they can go
and ask for help. Homeless people have the barriers of access to health care in the US. Therefore, the government should ensure that homeless people
gain information about health care services and can access those services. To understand the extent of the problem, we first need to understand what the
definition of homeless people and health care are, and what are the connection between them. Then we can discuss what the barriers of homeless

Health care can be defined as the "prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well–being through
the services offered by the medical and allied health professions" ("Health care", n. d.). In the U.S., health care is offered by both private and public
insurers. Generally, it comes from an employer–sponsored insurance. In the past, homeless people who had no job generally had no health insurance.
Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) was established to serve those people (Zlotnick, Zerger, & Wolfe, 2013, p. 2). HCH is a model that helps the
federal government to encourage homeless people who have problems to access health care. These people face a lack of money, of health care
insurance, and of knowledge about where they can go when they are sick. The problem of homeless people with health care is an ongoing problem.
The federal government tried to solve these problems, but when Obama became president of the United States, he launched a new health care policy
called The Affordable Care Act (ACA). The important policy under ACA is expanding Medicaid coverage for all US citizens, including homeless
people. Many Americans get advantages from ACA because people who have low income can have more access to health care (Clemans–Cope et al.,
2013, p. 3). The government spends a lot of money to serve people who cannot access health care. Unfortunately, many people do

As Americans, individuals take the small comforts of life for granted daily. The everyday individual overlooks a growing dilemma in the U.S., and
goes home every night to the comfort of their family. The homeless population has increased over the years, and continues to grow by the day with
the increase of the cost of living. Healthcare needs, and the availability of facilities to the under privileged is a major problem in the United States. Up
to 610,000 individuals and families are living on the streets each and every night. All of these individuals are at a greater risk of contracting an illness
simply because of their living situations, as well as not having the means to financially afford the cost of a doctor's visit. Homeless individuals

As of 2005 over 727,000 individuals were without homes and had nowhere to go (Romeo). Homelessness in The United States is continuously
increasing problem, how can this problem be avoided, how can the problem be helped, and how does homelessness begin. How can homelessness
start? When people lose their continuous income, they lose their money and can no longer afford the basic necessities that most people take for
vantage and do not ever think twice about. The average monthly income for homeless households is $267 and although they may be able to afford
the "low" rent rates they are still unable to pay for the electricity and water bills (Spectator). The National Low Income Coalition states more than
half the low income families cannot afford to buy two bedroom apartments and the percentage for unpaid rent and utility billing which causes
evictions is up to more than 80 percent (Spectator). Along with the loss of their jobs these people are unlikely to find other jobs. Some individuals

36.3 million live in households without enough food." This statistic only reflects the United States, and to many people, it just doesn't make sense. For
instance Alfredzine Black of the YWCA in Marion, Indiana says, "I don't understand why we have so muchpoverty in the richest country in the world!"

The World Bank monitors poverty and homelessness around the world, but other agencies focus on evaluating the United States alone. One of these is
the United States Census Bureau.
In the United States, the Census Bureau sets the official poverty line. The figure used to compute a person's poverty status includes any earnings,
Social Security payments, child support, or other assistance. Then, using the size of the family and the ages of the family members, the Census Bureau
determines which poverty threshold applies...According to this poverty measure, 12.5 percent of the U.S. population lived in poverty in 2007.

These studies may be biased or skewed depending on the information available to Census Bureau and World Bank employees who conduct them or
the factors used to determine who is poor. For example, the factors taken into consideration by the Census Bureau may contribute to faulty results,
since they only determine who is under the poverty line after they calculate how much Social Security money or "other assistance" the applicants
receive. It seems like it would make much more sense to learn how well the subjects of the studies are doing on their own before they are assisted, and
maybe this way an accurate measure of the homeless population could be obtained, but

Homelessness In The United States
An alarming prevalence of homelessness is present throughout the United States. At any given night in 2014, approximately five hundred thousand
people were homeless (Klassen, 2013). The government has limited resources, in which policy makers have to make decisions on how to allocate them.
This United States has a long history of citizens being without housing. Dating back to the colonial era, homeless people were often referred to as "the
wandering poor, sturdy beggars, or simply as vagrants, the homeless first became noticeable in the late eighteenth century, then grew significantly in
number after 1820, when urbanization and industrial development began to take hold in the young nation" (Kusmer, 2002, pp. 16). Federal funding for

While the government is active in providing subsidized housing and funding to programs to help homeless citizens, the majority of governments have
utilized legislation in terms of public space regulation, rather than ameliorating the underlying causes of homelessness. Published in the Columbia
Human Rights Law Review, "Many communities across the country continue to pass ordinances criminally punishing homeless persons for engaging
in necessary, life–sustaining activities such as sleeping in public places in the absence of an indoor alternative (Tars, Johnson, Bauman, & Foscarinis,
2014, pp. 740). The consensus of the authors is that homelessness continues due to "selective enforcement of public space restrictions such as loitering
laws, park closure rules, and open container ordinances. Driven by business interests or not–in–my–backyard attitudes, the ultimate goal of such
measures is often to remove the visible effects of homelessness and poverty from downtowns, tourist destinations, residential areas, and even entire
communities" (Tars et al., 2014, pp. 740). Matching the constitutionality notion of Siebert, here the publication has asserted "Advocates have
successfully argued that it is cruel and unusual punishment to penalize people for involuntary conduct, that is, engaging in necessary, life–sustaining
conduct in public places when shelter or housing is unavailable, and that prohibiting a "necessity of life," such as a place to sleep, impedes homeless
persons' freedom of travel or movement" (Tars et. al., 2014, pp. 740). However, even the authors agree that these actions do not help to end
homelessness, rather just managing of the present problem (Tars et. al., 2014, pp.

Homelessness And The United States
Homelessness has always been a present problem in the United States. It is caused by many factors that some of us are not aware of. The situations of
these people hurt their families and local communities alike. Two sources were examined for their content on these issues. This essay describes the
hardships of homelessness and what can be done to help these people.
Helping the Homeless Many people have gotten to experience what life is like in big cities or small rural communities. Often times, these places
have a population of wealthier people and an area of poorer families. What many do not experience is what it is like to be homeless in these places.
Homeless men, women and children can be seen under bridges, on front stoops, in cars, and several other locations of "shelter". This problem is
more common and local than a lot of us believe. Whether we know it or not, we have people that are struggling with homelessness in our own
communities today. This epidemic is more real than we may ever know. It is very sad to imagine these people living in these conditions but things can
be done to help. Homelessness is a reality in local communities and can be improved through schools, educational programs, charity, and helping them
overcome barriers or stressors. There are numerous common misconceptions about the homeless and how they are being helped. People usually picture
a homeless person as lazy (known as a "bum") or unfit for society. It

Homeless as defined by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an individual who lacks housing, including those whose primary
residence during the night is a supervised public or private facility that provides temporary living accommodations, they are a person with out
permanent housing, who may live on the streets, in a shelter, abandoned building, or other unstable situations (HHS). It is important for communities
throughout the United States to develop a system that identifies the number of homeless around them. This information is valuable to many government
and private agencies, it enables them to acquire, and maintain needed resources and money in order to best serve their homeless populations. There are
different ways that communities attempt to count their homeless population, shelters, feeding centers and others who provide resources are able to
take count of how many they serve each day, but unfortunately it can be hard to track those who do not come on a returning basis. The US Census

The Homelessness Of The United States
Whose responsibility is it to help the homeless in the United States? I believe that it is everyone's responsibility. As of January 2015 the homeless
count in America was 564,708 people (Fluit, 2015). Even though this is a decline in homeless in America this is still unacceptable. As Americans we
need to do all that we can to decrease these numbers. There is so much we could do that would go a long way to help our homeless, like donating
time or money to the proper organizations. "In January 2015, 358,422 people experienced homelessness as individuals (64 percent of all homeless
people). There were 206,286 homeless people in families with children on a single night in January 2015, accounting for 36 percent of all
homeless people. Homelessness among individuals declined by less than 1 percent (or 1,767) between 2014 and 2015, and by 13 percent (or
54,278) between 2007 and 2015. Homelessness among people in families with children declined by 5 percent (or 9,975) between 2014 and 2015,
and by 12 percent (or 28,272) between 2007 and 2015" (Authors et al, 2016). "In January 2015, 83,170 individuals and 13,105 people in families
with children were chronically homeless. Chronic homelessness among individuals declined by 1 percent (or 819) over the past year, and by 31
percent (or 36,643) between 2007 and 2015. In January 2015, 47,725 veterans were homeless on a single night. Fewer than 10 percent (4,338) were

Homelessness Affects Everyone
No matter who's living on the streets, Homelessness affects everyone. Homelessness is a major problem. Approximately 643,067 people every night
experience homelessness in America. Homelessness is a problem in numerous ways, it is a economic problem and a public health problem. Many
people believe all homeless people are drug addicts and are mentally ill but this very false. Many homeless people struggle with both mental illness and
addiction, often using alcohol and/or drugs to self–medicate an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness but not all homeless people are mentally
unstable drug addicts. The main causes of homelessness are poverty, unemployment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The minimum wage plays a huge factor in homelessness. The average minimum wage in America of $7.25 does not provide enough for a person
to afford a standard two bedroom apartment. Statistics claim that one would have to earn at least three times the average minimum wage to afford
a standard two bedroom apartment. This affects the economy because workers that earn minimum wage can not afford the basic necessities to live
so they either live in the streets or live off government funded homes, such as shelters. People without housing are high consumers of public
resources and generate expense, rather than income, for the community. Based on a study conducted a few years ago, it can cost a community as
much as $23,000 for one person to be chronically homeless for one year because of (shelter stays, jail time, emergency room visits, etc.).
Homelessness is bad for business because it can be a deterrent to visitors of a city. Without their own housing and the social status to use restrooms in
public places, people who are homeless often have to relieve themselves outside, which can cause infections and diseases. They don't have access to
health care and often have chronic illnesses, made worse by there tough living conditions, such as sleeping outside in all weather and eating out of
trash cans. Since most homeless people have such poor hygiene, settled people don't want to go near them, so they won't go to the stores there sleeping
near, which will hurt the stores

Homelessness : The Problem Within The United States
Homelessness is an arising problem within the United States. Poverty and homelessness are inheritably linked. As children we were raised to believe
that through hard work and determination that we could accomplish anything. We all had dreams of having nice cars, a nice home and lots of money,
however this is impossible when a person is living pay check to pay check and close to being homeless. Knowing that we live in the "land of
opportunity" brings many dreams to anyone's mind, however, many families are experiencing financial issues that are causing them to become
homeless because they cannot afford to live and pay their bills, food, child care, health care and education (National Coalition of the homeless, 2007).

On any given night there are more than 300,000 veterans that have no shelter or food. Veterans are more likely to become homeless, before any other
American (Veterans Inc., 2010). With this number so high, it makes people ask themselves, these men and woman are fighting for our country but they
have no place to live after returning home. We hope that the next generation will either come up with new ways to accommodate the homeless
population and find new resources to modify the current system.
Domestic violence is defined as emotionally or physically (or both) controlling an intimate partner, often involving physical assault, stalking or sexual
assault (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2009). Something close to my home, Fargo North Dakota 2005, 1 in 5 women reported that she had left

Rights Project, n.d.). Living so close to Minnesota as well, 1 in every 3 homeless women were driven from their home by domestic violence in 2003
(ACLU Women 's Rights Project, n.d.). These numbers are unthinkable when a person lives in the area, and knowing that it happens to just about
anyone. Many women don't have the resources or family around them that they can rely on when something of that nature occurs. When a woman has

Homelessness Among The United States
Homelessness has always been growing across communities in the United States, and many struggle from it as they are people who are lacking in
funds, causing them to be without a home. Today, homelessness among individuals is becoming more common and is unfortunately spreading all
over the world. Most home owning people are unaware of the actuality of the conditions that the homeless people reside in and many cannot
comprehend the troubles and hardships they face just to keep themselves alive. Most homeless people are known to reside in abandoned buildings,
buses, cars, street corners and in many community parks. Most homeless people can barely afford to eat every day and to survive many live on the
scraps and leftovers from others. Homelessness is defined as someone who cannot afford to pay for housing without depriving themselves of the
essentials needed in life. People who become homeless do not all necessarily live on streets, but many "homeless people in our modern society stay
with friends, relatives and even in shelters as they cannot afford to live on their own" (Espejo 28).
The three kinds of homelessness that exist are, temporary homelessness, episodical/cynical homelessness and chronic homelessness. A person who
falls under the category of temporary homelessness is typically a person or family that becomes homeless for a short period of time. Most people are
forced into temporary homelessness because of an unexpected and minor occurrence such as the loss of a

In Stanislaus county the homeless population has grown from 1,156 in 2005 to 1,800 today and still growing. Modesto had the highest count of
homelessness with 983 documented homeless individuals according to a 2015 Modesto Bee study and sadly, the amount increases as surrounding
areas begin to enforce strict laws. These laws criminalize and relocate homeless folk to our county. There are no exceptions to the cold reality of
homelessness: men, women, children, military veterans, individuals, and families are included in the rising numbers of homelessness in Stanislaus
County. According to the National Law Center on Homelessness andPoverty, the leading cause of homelessness in the United States is the lack of
affordable housing. Exposing the problems and cause will allow us to figure out how we can work towards a solution. The answer to diminishing
homelessness is to invest in permanent housing. By working together as a community and devising a plan, we could reduce and possibly end
homelessness in Stanislaus County.
Individuals and families are being kicked from their homes due to the rising costs of living. Some people can not afford these costs with their annual
income and now have forced to the streets or into homeless shelters. Many people might say that homelessness can never be avoided nor stopped but

Cause And Consequences Of Homelessness In The United States

  • 1. Cause And Consequences Of Homelessness In The United States Homelessness As I drove through the streets of New Orleans I constantly see homeless people sleeping in tents under the overpass on Claiborne Avenue commonly named" tent city". I wondered what were the psychological reasons of those that ended up homeless, the statistics, causes, and consequences of homelessness combined with the effect it has on society. There are various reasons that homelessness exists in the United States, the most common reason is due to a lack of affordable housing. Homelessness is more predominant in urban areas than in rural regions of the U.S. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, approximately 578,424 people were identified as homeless in the United States as of January 2014. The Great Depression in 1929 was another catastrophic event in American history that led to major economic hardships for millions of citizens that further propelled homelessness. Although these historical events are from the past the residual effects are impacting the U.S. society and culture today. Slavery was a part of the United States since the beginning of the American Revolution, which placed a racial division between the whites and blacks. Although slavery was abolished during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the effects of racism lingered continuously and are sadly still affecting many African Americans today in certain ways. After World War II, America improved greatly; in terms of economic wealth. This was a time of financial prosperity and innovative technological advancements. Caucasians in America benefitted greatly from the country's newfound wealth; however African Americans were not so lucky. They found themselves segregated from the whites and prohibited from certain rights. Some of these rights involved housing and employment opportunities. While the Caucasians in the U.S. had access to their preferred employment and housing, African Americans and other minorities were not granted these same rights. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Homelessness In The United States Research Paper Homelessness in the United States The topic I have decided to focus Genius Hour on is how to solve the problem of homelessness in the United States. More than 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year. And in 2013, there was a high of 2.5 million homeless children. But why should people care? People should care because if they ever went into foreclosure, they could be secure in knowing that they would still have a place to stay in and would not be forced to go on the streets. A solution to eliminatinghomelessness would be incorporating some socialism factors of government into our federal government. I consider this a sensible solution because our federal government has a double security system that prevents our government ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These outrageous numbers of people who are without, homes and have no protection against such a damning situation which is cause by the increase of joblessness, coupled with a plummeting economy. Why ask, why is so many of our citizens living this way? The question should be proposed by our government, how can we as a society fix our homelessness in the United States? Homelessness is a product of our entire country which is a direct reflection of our economy and there a lack of insight to those who have little to no means of digging themselves out of this rut. • 4. Homelessness In The United States The thought of being homeless is a terrifying to anyone, but sadly for many it is a reality. I could never imagine not knowing where I was going to sleep for the night, especially not as a teenager. Teenage years are a struggle for everyone then adding homelessness into it gives an entirely different set of issues for someone to be presented with. Teenage pregnancy is occurring throughout the United States, and it is a stressful time for everyone involved. The teen mother has to not only worry about herself, but now for the child that is growing inside of her. She will have to face the rude comments and looks she gets not only from her peers, but also random strangers on the streets. Much like pregnant teenagers in school, there are pregnant homeless teens: "Studies suggest that pregnant and parenting homeless youth and young adults face even greater social, health, and mental health challenges than homeless peers who are not ... I personally find this disturbing, how can someone with no home have custody of their child? Where is this child getting their meals? Where are they sleeping at night? What is this child wearing? I don't personally understand how a homeless teen mother can be meeting the needs of a child. What is also disturbing to me was the state many of the homeless mothers themselves were left in: "Among those mothers whose children were in their custody, nearly half met the criteria for mental health disorders such as major depressive disorder (47%), antisocial personality disorder (47%), posttraumatic stress disorder (11%), and alcohol abuse" (Narendorf et al., 2016, p. 201). • 5. Homelessness In The United States Everyone knows of homeless people, but not as many people actually know about homeless people. In the U.S. there are over 3.5 million people who face homelessness each year. Many factors play into why people become or end up homeless and it is different for everyone especially the various age groups of the homeless population; homeless people are from all walks of life including minors, adults, and elders. As sad as it is the truth is that people under 18 years make up 39% of the total homeless population and 40% of those minors identify as LGBT. While the contributing reasons to homelessness is seemingly never ending the main cause of youth homelessness is physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse from parents or guardians. For these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Contrary to belief shelters are not a walk in and receive housing type of deal, but rather there is a process of calling the shelter and being put on a waiting list which often times take much longer than what the caller was hoping for. With this in place and the fact that shelters are allowed to turn away homeless people, most teens are rejected housing and sent elsewhere. Pat LaMarche says in her article " when a family presents itself to a homeless shelter and a teenager is present, the shelter agrees to take the mom and younger kids if the teenaged children . . . leave them and go elsewhere," (LaMarche, 1). So even when the whole family is homeless the teenager is still turned away and must go off on their own. Another subject that often times causes young people to become homeless is emancipation. When a teenager who lives within foster care turns 18 they are freed to face the world by themselves. It's more like they are kicked out. In many instances the newlyfound adult won't have anyplace to go to or end up moving into a bad housing situation only to find themselves without shelter shortly after. California's own Department of Social Services concluded, "65 percent of emancipating youth lack safe and affordable housing at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Homelessness in the United States The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of poverty on young children and their families. The focus will be on homelessness and how the child is affected in two major settings: the home, or lack of, and school. In both of these settings, children are impacted by different social forces and must push through barriers that are set before them given their circumstance. "Living without permanent, long–term housing creates a number of stressors for children and families, but being homeless can be particularly detrimental to the healthy development of young children" (McCoy–Roth, Mackintosh, & Murphey, 2012). In addition, compared with their peers, a higher proportion of homeless preschoolers had a number of developmental delays" (McCoy–Roth, Mackintosh, & Murphey, 2012). This lends itself to an ever–continuous cycle of poverty, violence, and low education, many times leading to homelessness. When families have very low income, their children go hungry twice as much as their classmates who are not at the poverty level. Missing meals causes these children to have poor physical and emotional health, and limited opportunities to socially and educationally interact with peers (McCoy–Roth, Mackintosh, & Murphey, 2012). Children in this population have a hard time making friends as they are accustomed to having little to no privacy and experience higher levels of anxiety (Powell, 2012). "Many homeless children lack quality experiences in early learning environments. These inadequate learning experiences create an additional barrier to healthy growth in all developmental domains" (Powell, 2012). As early educators and advocates for young children, we need to be available to families in our area and play integral roles that can make a difference in their lives. Some ways that I could do that in a student's life would be to assure that the family's basic needs are met by striving to make a deeper connection, provide outside ... Homeless people do not ask to live on the streets without a home to which to return and mostly are without homes because they cannot make enough money to pay to live in their previous homes. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One out of seven people in the United States is in danger of facing hunger (The National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, "Overview of Homelessness in America"). People living in poverty are the ones most at risk of homelessness, and those who are most likely to experience poverty are also more likely to face homelessness. These people include the elderly, youth, families, individuals, and others. Homelessness is significantly caused by the lack of affordable housing and the few housing assistance programs. Housing wages are higher than the hourly wages earned by renters. Poor people are often unable to pay for housing, food, child care, health care, and education altogether. Because of the limited resources they have, they can only pay for some necessities. As a result, housing is given up since it takes up a large portion of their incomes. Minimum wage has decreased since the late 1960s, and minimum and low wage workers cannot afford food and shelter. The high unemployment rates have resulted in jobs being hard to find and obtain; and even if jobs are found, that does not mean those people automatically escape poverty. "The declining value and availability of public assistance is another source of increasing poverty and homelessness and many families leaving welfare struggle to get medical care, food, and housing as a result of loss of benefits, low wages, and unstable employment" (National Coalition for the Homeless, "Homelessness in ... While reading about homelessness through the media, one must be sure to realize that even the articles written include discourses and also that they omit details in order to keep the attention of the readers. Something to consider though, is the fact that many people are not willing to open up a safe haven, such as a church, to potentially dangerous. Even though many people try to go through their days without judging people, it is inevitable to have discourses towards people. In America people grow up hearing stories about how if you give a homeless person money that he or she will most likely use it on beer or drugs. These discourses need to be eliminated in order for the country's problem to be solved. The United States is known as a country full of opportunities, a place where anyone can succeed but behind that visage is a reality that is becoming worse and worse as time goes on. • 12. Homelessness : The Problem Of Homelessness In The United... In 2005 an estimated 100 million people were homeless worldwide and as many as 1.6 billion without proper housing (global homelessness). Homelessness is an often overlooked problem; people do not realize the extremities of this issue. Unfortunately, Columbus, GA has one of the highest homelessness rates in GA (homelessness report). People unintentionally disregard them every day on their way to work, school, and home. They are regular people just like everyone else, yet no one takes care of them. Unfortunate situations can happen to anyone, and when they do people reach out and do what they need to take care of them; so why do they not do the same for the homeless? This is a problem that desperately needs help. In Boston, they have an organization called Housing First. This organization reaches out to the homeless communities, finds them apartments, helps them get a job and provides a way for them to get their life back on track. In Columbus, we need to start something similar called Community First. Homeless People are constantly blamed themselves for their situation, but often times it has nothing to do with anything they have done. People can become homeless in various ways. • 17. Is Homelessness The United States? Week 3 white What is meant by homelessness in the United States? Homelessness is something that can be temporary or chronic. It is when an individual or family does not have and cannot afford a suitable place to live long term. Things like staying in a shelter, one room facilities (motel) or staying with a family member or friend does not mean you are not homeless. If you cannot afford suitable long term accommodations yourself, then you are considered homeless. When you are referring to youth homelessness they are considered homeless if they do not have parents to care for them or are not in the foster or legal system receiving care. Complications of being Homeless. Being homeless comes with many complications that lead to the continuation of having no home. When you are homeless you are more susceptible to things such as infection and other health problems. Homeless youth that have no parental ties are less likely to graduate. You are also at a greater risk of physical harm being caused to you by someone else such as rape, human trafficking or assault. If you do not have somewhere and some way to clean up and to clean your cloths then it is next to impossible to go for job interviews. This causes you to remain in a homeless situation. You are also more susceptible to drug and alcohol use as a way to cope with your situation. According to the National Conference of State Legislator website "It is estimated that 5,000 unaccompanied youth die each year as a result ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. The Homelessness Of The United States Ending Homelessness Homelessness in the United States can be ended, not just maintained. Allot of cities now have plans to eradicate homelessness. Homelessness and housing instability are large issues that afflict a diverse demographic such as: Families, youth, veterans, and chronically homeless single male adults. Ending homelessness may require specialized solutions that are specific to individual needs. Factors like these make defeating homelessness a difficult task. Although solutions exist for some of the demographics, such as housing for chronically homeless adults, scaling up best practices remains a challenge. For other subpopulations, such as transitional aged youth, evidence–based interventions need to be developed. In this paper we argue that ending homelessness is a Grand Challenge that is big, important, and compelling–one that the profession of social work should be adopt. Meeting this challenge will require a focused, organized response from social work researchers, clinicians, and policymakers. In the U.S., health care is offered by both private and public insurers. Generally, it comes from an employer–sponsored insurance. In the past, homeless people who had no job generally had no health insurance. Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) was established to serve those people (Zlotnick, Zerger, & Wolfe, 2013, p. 2). The federal government tried to solve these problems, but when Obama became president of the United States, he launched a new health care policy called The Affordable Care Act (ACA).
