22. Batllo House (Casa Batlló)
Batllo House (Casa Batlló) is a famous building in the heart of Barcelona is Antoni Gaudi's
masterpiece. House built before the transformation, which was redesigned in 1904 by Gaudi
been refurbished several times.
Like everything Gaudí designed, it can only identify as Modernisme or Art Nouveau in the
broadest sense. On the first floor, it has a particularly unusual tracery, irregular oval windows
and flowing sculpted stone work. Few lines, most of the external walls decorated with colorful
mosaics made of broken tiles.
Locals name for Batlló House variously as the house of bones or house of the dragon. The
balconies look like the bony jaws of some strange beast and the roof represents Sant Jordi
(St George) and the dragon. Even the roof was built to look like the shape of a dragon’s back,
with shiny scales – the 'spine' changes colour as you walk around. If you stare long enough at
the building, it seems almost to be a living being. Before going inside, take a look at the
pavement. Each paving piece carries stylised images of an octopus and a starfish.
32. Mila House (Casa Milà)
Mila House is a modernist building in Barcelona. It designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, and
was built from 1906 to 1912.
The building was commissioned in 1906 by businessman Pere Milà and his wife. At the
time, it was controversial because of the undulating stone facade and twisting wrought
iron balconies and windows.
The front of the house looks like massive rocks, relaxed only by the wavy lines of iron and
beaten ornaments. The bright stone of this otherwise colorless facade distinguishes it from
all of Gaudí's other works and is very expressionistic.
The Mila House got the nickname "Quarry" however, because of the unusual construction.
The large stone slabs were first mounted to the facade and then processed by the
craftsmen. The city of Barcelona announced right after the completion that the Casa Milà
was a work of art. The house has a natural ventilation system, which makes air
conditioning unnecessary and in Gaudi's plans were provided with an elevator, however
the elevator wasn't built in the building until much later. You can move the interior walls. A
concrete-steel construction, which requires no load-bearing walls makes this possible.
In 1984 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Currently, it is the headquarters
of the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation, which manages the exhibitions, activities and
public visits at Mila House.
42. The highlight of Mila House is without doubt the roof. Not only the overwhelming
view of the city attracts the eyes of the visitors. Moreover the chimneys,
ventilation shafts and stairwells with their fanciful colors and shapes attract them.
Some chimneys look like soldiers, who watch over the roof.

The benches at the oval shaped center of the square are ideal for people-
watching. A single row of trees surrounds this area, shielding it from the traffic
heavy streets. To the north are a couple of large circular fountains that are
illuminated at night.
