This is a presentation I did last year in Chicago for Cook County juvenile probation officers. It is an update on patterns of drug abuse by adolescents. Among other things, it acquaints viewers with the problem of street drug misrepresentation. Not only are the same street drugs sold in different forms, but drugs that look the same may contain completely different drugs.

Building on my latest book The Unmaking of Man, this talk was the opening keynote presentation for the 2013 new Zealand Disability Support Network Conference in Wellington. Although there is some awareness that disabled people suffered during the Holocaust too few know how central were disabled people to the horror of the Holocaust. Nor are we sufficiently aware that many of the forces that preceded the Holocaust are still very real today. We need to think deeper about how to protect each other in all our diversity.

Prof Peter Crampton (Dean and Head of Campus, University of Otago Wellington) specialist in public health medicine, argues that public health is a social, political, economic and justice issue, not a medical one. After charting the course of change to our health system since the 30’s, he urges every citizen to articulate in all their relationships (personal, professional, civil), their commitment to public health as a right of citizenship. He also agues that the goal of the public health system is to reduce inequalities and produce just outcomes for all New Zealanders. http://dosomething.org.nz

This paper was a Keynote presentation at the Scottish Drug Forum Conference on Stigma. The paper examines the social construction of stigma looking at the way in which drug use and notions of abuse are culturally bound and determined. The role of the media shapes and firms up these boundaries. For more resources see: https://julianbuchanan.wordpress.com/publications/ Feel free to email me: julianbuchanan@gmail.com

Chapter 13 Psychiatric Medications

Barbiturates are one of the much oldest classes of sedative-hypnotic agents. They have typically significant depressive cardiovascular and respiratory effects, however, and have been largely replaced in the ICU by the benzodiazepines, propofol, butyrophenones, and other newer agents. Barbiturates are occasionally availed for deep sedation or anesthesia in mechanically ventilated patients with status epilepticus and in patients with quiet elevated intracranial pressure (barbiturate coma). In patients with closed-head injury and aggrandized intracranial pressure refractory to conventional therapies, survival has been improved by adding high-dose barbiturates to conventional therapy Barbiturate, any of a class of organic compounds availed in medicine as sedatives (to produce a calming effect), as hypnotics (to produce sleep), or as an adjunct in anesthesia. Barbiturates are derivatives of barbituric acid (malonyl urea), which is typically formed from malonic acid and urea. Barbital was first synthesized in 1903, and phenobarbital became available in 1912. Barbiturates act by depressing the central nervous system, specifically on certain portions of the brain, though they tend to depress the functioning of all the body’s tissues. Most of them exert a quiet sedative effect in small doses and a hypnotic effect in larger doses [2]. The barbiturates have largely been replaced as sedatives by the benzodiazepines and other minor tranquilizers, which have fewer unfavourable side effects and less abuse potential.

CNS Drugs CNS Drugs The drugs which act on the CNS(Central Nervous System) are known as CNS drugs The CNS consists of cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla and the spinal cord. CNS depressants The drugs which have a depressant action on the CNS Non selective depressants: which produce a generalised depressant action on the CNS. Eg. Hypnotic and sedative, central muscle relaxants Selective depressants: it selectively depress certain region or portion of the CNS. They include tranquillizers, Analgesics and anti-convalsants B. CNS stimulants the drugs which stimulate and reactivate CNS used for variety of purposes like treatment of depressive state, maintenance of wakefulness restoration of respiration and blood and restoration of normal reflexes. C. CNS modifiers(Tranquillizers) used in treatment of mental disorders. they produce improvement in the mood and behaviour of the patient Major tranquillizers: reduce the agitation and disturbed behaviour which are associated with delusion and hallucinations in schizophrenia Minor tranquillizers: there are antianxiety agents which gives calming effect in patients in anxiety state associated with neurotic personality This slide contains the definition of CNS drugs. Their classification based on chemical structure and PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITY

Embark on an enlightening journey into the intricate world of the cytoskeleton and cell inclusions with Dr. Muhammad Ali Rabbani, Assistant Professor of Anatomy. In this comprehensive lecture, explore the structure, formation, and functions of the cytoskeleton's three major components: microtubules, microfilaments (actin filaments), and intermediate filaments. Additionally, delve into the realm of cell inclusions, understanding their nature, composition, and significance within cellular biology. 🎓 Learning Objectives:🎓 By the end of this lecture, students will: - Identify different components of the cytoskeleton and describe their structure, formation, and functions. - Define inclusion bodies and describe various types of cell inclusions. - Understand the roles of microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments in providing structural support, facilitating cellular motility, and aiding in cell division. - Analyze the dynamic instability of microtubules and the mechanisms of motor protein-driven intracellular transport. - Explore the formation, composition, and physiological significance of various cell inclusions, including fat droplets, glycogen granules, lipofuscin, and hemosiderin. 💡 Key Topics Covered: - Structure, Formation, and Functions of Microtubules - Microtubule Organizing Center (MTOC) and Centrosome - Dynamic Instability of Microtubules - Motor Proteins and Intracellular Transport - Structure and Functions of Microfilaments (Actin Filaments) - Actin Binding Proteins and Myosin Motors - Structure and Stability of Intermediate Filaments - Types of Intermediate Filaments: Keratin, Vimentin, Desmin, Neurofilaments, Glial Filaments, Lamin - Nature, Composition, and Significance of Cell Inclusions: Fat Droplets, Glycogen Granules, Lipofuscin, Hemosiderin 🔍 Connect with Dr. Muhammad Ali Rabbani for a deeper understanding of the cytoskeleton and cell inclusions!🔍 Learning Resources: For additional educational content and resources, visit our website: [www.medicoseacademics.com](www.medicoseacademics.com).
