The loved ones that are left behind feel a sense of guilt, at fault, and thoughts that if they were more
involved, then their veteran would be alive. There have been many organizations that have
accomplished the prevention of suicide, but they seem to focus more of the male veteran. Stop 22,
Buddy Check 22, and Mission 22 are a few organizations that have tried to step in to help prevent
Veteran suicide, because these programs are just as similar as the Veterans Crisis Hotline. Veterans
need peer one–on–one attention that doesn't make them feel like they are going to be sent to a psych

Individuals' cultural values contribute to the how they view themselves and react to life
circumstances. In the mental health field, negative self–stigma among clients occurs commonly and
can lead to poor health. When suffering this affliction, patients internalize negative beliefs, which

dreams; (b) diminished responsiveness (numbing), which disinterest in significant activities and
with feeling of detachment and estrangement from others; and (c) symptoms such as exaggerating
startle response, disturbed sleep, difficulty in concentrating or remembering, guilt about surviving
when others did not, and avoidance of activates that call the traumatic event to mind" (as cited in

The newest face of Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has manifested itself regularly into
action packed movies, public scrutiny, and negative stereotypes by the media. The unfortunate truth
surrounding PTSD is that employers are unenthusiastic about hiring veterans with these hidden
disabilities. Unemployment rates in the United States amongst post 9/11 veterans have significantly
increased and employers consider the condition and impairment or obstacle. Although research and
advanced technology has enhanced the public's awareness of PTSD, understanding the contributing
factors to PTSD, why companies are hesitant in hiring veterans, how does this affect veteran
unemployment rates, and what avenues are available to assist veterans in rejoining the workforce.
Understanding PTSD
In order to understand why leading companies view sufferers of the disorder as untrustworthy or
undependable, we must understand the meaning of PTSD. According to the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs, "PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or
witnessing a life–threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault."
(U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2013) Compared to their civilian counterparts, 262,000 Iraq
and Afghanistan veterans have sough post–traumatic stress disorder treatment form Veterans Affairs
(VA).

Introduction Prior to this assignment student veterans were a portion of the student population that I
had no prior experience or knowledge of interacting with outside the scope of my history of higher
education course reviewing the components of the GI Bill. The assignment allowed me to get an in
depth historical analysis of the GI Bill and how it effected student equity in higher education from
its establishment. I have come to understand the services students veterans possess but as well as
some of the limitations they face being advocates for themselves in order to receive their benefits. In

from. To elaborate, men and woman go to war zones, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, or Pakistan, and

which still remains in the United Sates today is homelessness among veterans. Vanessa Turner has a
story that needs to be heard by many. As a homeless veteran, Turner joined the U.S. military in 1997
and later, proudly advanced to the rank of a sergeant. In 2003, Turner suffered from a traumatic
injury while serving in Iraq. In suffocating 130–degrees fahrenheit heat, Turner fell into a coma and
nearly died of heart failure. Immediately, she was brought to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center
in Washington D.C., treated, and released with a pending medical discharge. After Turner's release,
both her and her daughter had no residency and no permanent health care plan. In attempt to make a
stable living to sustain herself and her daughter, they often temporarily moved between family to
friends' apartments, never actually having a place to call home. In an effort to receive help from the
Veterans Affairs Medical Center was very frustrating; she was told she had to wait months simply to
get medical attention. Again when Turner requested for her belongings to be shipped back from her
unit's base in Germany, they told her she had to obtain transportation to Germany at her own
expense, which she was unable to do because of the amount of money that it would cost,

Suicide not only affects the veteran who committed it but it also affects their family. In 1999–2008
the suicide rate among veterans was 19.4% out of 100,000 and in 2009 the suicide rate went up to

U.S infantry troops landed in France and began training for combat. A stalemate lasted for several

took place on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month (U.S. Department of
Veteran Affairs, 2015). This has been known as "the war to end all wars." On November 11, 1919,

Many veterans are likely to suffer from Depression, Substance Abuse and/or Dependence, various
phobias, sleeplessness, and Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Palmer, 2011). Some Veterans
also have physical disabilities from combat wounds and it isn't unlikely to manage such pains with
pharmaceuticals that also lead to addiction. The stigma that permeates the military culture
surrounding mental health and the ability to adjust to any condition within the military is always
present, often making seeking treatment taboo (Jarvis, 2009). Historical Information The United
States Military was established in 1775, which coincided with the Revolutionary War. In 1776, the
government boosted enlistments into the military for the Revolutionary War by providing pensions
to disabled soldiers. In 1789, the Department of War was established, which would later be renamed

In this paper, I will focus on the topic of why veterans are coming back homeless. Veterans are seen
as a savior of the country they are risking their lives for every day, so why is it that they are coming
back from tours and service and ultimately ending up homeless? Since 2009 the United States stated
that in five years they would end veteran homeless, but the United States is still facing veteran
homelessness in the year 2017. Though the homeless rates of veterans have gone down since then,
why are veterans still facing homelessness if so many resources are supposed to be available for
them. Is there more than meets the eye when it comes to homelessness especially with veterans, yes.
Many things can attribute to this continuing issue such as lack of assistances provided, mental
illnesses, PTSD, lack or loss of support from being deployed, the use of drugs and alcohol as coping
strategies, and the economics.

PTSD is a mental health problem that some individuals can develop after experiencing or witnessing
a life–threatening event, such as combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. It is
normal for an individual to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after a
traumatic event. It may be hard to do normal activities, such as going to work, school, or spending
time with people you care about. For some individuals, PTSD symptoms may not start right away
they may come and go over time. With PTSD, veterans may find it had to keep their support groups
such as family, friends and possible significant others close due to the symptoms of PTSD.
Individuals can have a difficult time trying to get back into a routine that has now changed whether
they themselves are suffering from PTSD or individuals closest to those who are

Veteran Specific Healthcare
In our class we have gone over in the texts and lectures that today in our society much of our health
or our ability to stay healthy is the ability to get too and utilize proper healthcare. We have learned
in our readings that much of that healthcare is done at home but some of the most important care
and treatments must come from a specialized location of treatments and medical care, a hospital. In
the United States we do not have an established universal healthcare system as some countries in the
world do, you must have your insurance as well as the hospital you are going to must hopefully take
your insurance. Those are a socio–economic issue that affect everyone today and is the topic of
much discussion by scholars, politicians and everyday citizens as well. But there is a certain hospital
type that treats patients not based on their socio–economic class based off how expensive your
insurance is, and treats quite a few individuals for all their life as well as any injuries sustained in or

service. Although some have the support of family friends, it's not always the case for those who
undergo extended service for the United States. After serving a certain amount of time for the

Application to Social Welfare Policy
In relation to social welfare policy, if this bill passes, it could create a positive change for veterans

addressing the concerns of a growing population of people becomes more relevant to Social

He said that while he does deal with a lot of crisis situations, the position also does require him to
stay in the loop with the on goings within the Veterans Administrations, including the hospitals and
other health care centers. He must also build good relationships with the five Madison County
commissioners, since they are the ones who will deny and approve the claims Thaddeus puts in to
help veterans or their family. He was happy to say that he is very seldom denied a claim he puts a
