PATTERN DRAPING
Biniya Arakkal
Draping
◦ Draping for fashion design is the process of positioning and pinning
fabric on a dress form to develop the structure of a garment design.
◦ After draping, the fabric is removed from the dress form and used to
create the sewing pattern for the garment.
◦ Then the process of pattern making, fabric layout, cutting and sewing
happens behind each to create a garment ready.
Importance of draping
◦ Draping is considered an important skill for up coming designers because it
teaches the art of putting a piece of clothing together on a dress form before
creating a sketch.
◦ The art of draping teaches a designer how darts and seams give a garment shape
and a perfect fit.
◦ Knowing about darts and seams helps a designer recognize what's wrong with a
garment and quickly figure out how to fix it.
◦ A designer who experiments with draping also has more options because she can
keep on changing designs with darts and drape application different simply with
fabric other than erasing her sketching.
ADVANTAGE OF
DRAPING
Advantage
◦ You don’t have to know from experience how much ease allowance is necessary
where. You can just add more ease until it looks right.
◦ If you are using a stretchable fabric, you have to do few alterations than with flat
pattern. You can directly use the material directly rather than muslin material.
◦ It’s easier to see how the stripe/ pattern in the fabric will look of on a figure if
you drape with the fabric.
◦ Mainly this is the easiest technique for the designer to view the 3D form of
design before cut and sew into a garment.
DISADVANTAGE
Disadvantage
◦ For complicated designs, you have to have a general sense of the shape before you start, in order to cut the
right size of fabric required.
◦ Accurate size dress form is needed.
◦ Laying the fabric on to the table and tracing out the pattern onto a paper or else on fabric takes thrice the
time and effort when compared to pattern making.
