Fashion draping is an important process in fashion design where fabric is positioned and pinned on a dress form to develop a garment's structure. Muslin fabric is commonly used for draping as it is inexpensive and comes in various weights. The draping process involves selecting initial fabric, tearing it to shape, blocking and pressing it to form, and adding seam allowances. Draping allows designers to visualize how a dress will look and make adjustments before cutting, while reducing fabric waste. It is considered an important process used by many top fashion brands.
This session seeks to enlighten the learner on what pattern is, its improtance and and ways of obtaining them. it also help you to identify the tools and materials needed for pattern making
Fashion is a train that waits for nobody. Get it on or it’s gone.An individual style can also be a fashion when it is related to the current trend. Every style is not a fashion but a fashion is a style.

Methods of Pattern Making
Pattern making involves three methods-
Drafting
Draping
Flat paper pattern making
Drafting
It involves measurements derived from sizing systems or accurate measurements taken on a person, dress or body form.
Measurements for chest, waist, hip and so on, and ease allowances are marked on paper and construction lines are drawn to complete the pattern.
Drafting is used to create basic, foundation or design patterns.
MEASUREMENTS
Bust – measure just under the arms around the fullest part of chest.Waist – measure around narrowest part of torso.High Hip – measure 6 inches [15.5 cm] below waist around the hips.Back-waist length – measure from nape of neck to waist levelShoulder length – measure shoulder from ball socket to side of neck.Armhole depth – measure from nape of neck to under arm level.Back width – measure from armhole to armhole across shoulder blades.Neck – measure around base of neck.
Tools use for Drafting
A: Tape Measure
B: Seam Ripper
C: Fine Point Sharpie Marker
D: Tracing Wheel
E: Rotary Cutter

G: Tracing Paper
F: Fabric Scissors
H: Scotch Tape
I: Clear Rulers
J: Right Angle
K: Curved Rulers
Draping
It involves the draping of a two dimensional piece of fabric around a form, conforming to its shape, creating a three-dimensional fabric pattern.
Ease allowances for movement are added to make the garment comfortable to wear.
However, it is more expensive and time consuming than flat pattern making.
Draping can be made on a Human body or on a stand.
Advantage of draping is that the designer can see the overall design effect of the finished garment on the body form before the garment piece is cut and sewn.
Flat Pattern Making
It involves the development of a fitted basic pattern with comfort ease to fit a person or body form.
A sloper is the starting point for flat pattern designing.
It is a simple pattern that fits the body with just enough ease for movement and comfort. Five basic pattern pieces are used for women’s clothing.
They include a snug-fitting bodice front and bodice back with darts and a basic neckline, a sleeve and a fitted skirt front and back with darts.
However, as fashion changes frequently women’s styles fluctuate frequently.
These basic slopers are then manipulated to create fashions.
Nowadays draping is also tested by Computer aid techniques.
A basic sloper has no seam allowances, which facilitates its manipulations to various styles.
It has no design interest, only construction lines are marked on it.
It is necessary that the basic structure of a sloper should be such that adjustments can be introduced easily.
For a good pattern making, accurate measurements are of utmost importance.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

2. Fashion draping is an important part
of fashion design. Draping for fashion design is
the process of positioning and pinning fabric on
a dress form to develop the structure of a
garment design. ... After draping, the fabric is
removed from the dress form and used to create
the sewing pattern for the garment.
WHAT IS DRAPING??
3. This process starts with the choice of fabric that you wish to choose to drape, whether you like it
to be woven and not knit,
choose the similar fabric weight and draping style as the actual fabric that you shall be using
throughout the entire process to build the costume.
Considering the traditional and old fashion industry, muslin was used for toiles or even for the
fitting prototypes.
The reason for choosing muslin over the years could be that it comes in a huge variety of fabric
and is an inexpensive fabric as compared to the other ones in the market.
PROCESS
4. Generally, there are four types of muslin cloth that are used in fashion draping
and are as follows:
•Standard & Classic Muslin Fabric
•The cotton twill Muslin
•The cotton voile Muslin
•Hemp and silk Muslin
INITIAL FABRICS SELECTION
5. This is the step wherein the estimation of how much muslin is required done, by also considering a reasonable
amount of extra fabric needed as peruse for the ease, seaming allowances, and the fashion styling.
The next step is to cut the extra edge of the muslin fabric with the use of scissors and then tear the fabric grain with
the required pressure to break the fabric yarns successfully.
Then, make sure that the crosswise true grain or the lengthwise true grain is forming the edge of the muslin that
will be used for the purpose of draping.
It is because when the selvage is tightly and closely woven, it has a tendency to hold in the muslin fabric by often
throwing the weave off.
Therefore, always make it a point that the center, back, and the front is carefully planned at least 3” away from the
selvage.
THE TEARING
6. BLOCKING
It may happen that there arises a need to reshape the muslin fabric so
that proper shape and angels are been given to the crosswise and true
lengthwise yarns and grains to give the perfect edge to the dress.
For reshaping the muslin, you can pull the edges of the fabric diagonally
till the fabric is all squared.
7. This may come as a difficult part of the process.
Here in, you are required to set the exact position of the yarns with the aid of steam
and the heat of the pressing.
Always make it a point to press in the right directions of the crosswise and
lengthwise grains, by never pressing on the bays.
Then, steam it followed by a dry iron.
PRESSING
8. The beginner and novice fashion and draping students are expected to successfully add 1-
inch seam allowance on all the straight streams by also including the side seams, the
waistline seams, and the underarm seams.
SEAM ALLOWANCES
9. ADVANTAGES OF THE DRAPING PROCESS
With the process of draping, fashion designers can get a rough idea and visualize that how a
dress is going to look in the final end, even before starting to cut, stitch and design the costume.
The biggest advantage of draping can also be said that it allows room for customization. A dress
or a specific costume can be made as per the measurements and requirements of the
concerned person.
It results in less wastage of the fabric wherein you only do trails before you actually cut the
fabric.
The process of draping also allows you to make paper patterns and designs which you use
further in a dress or for ideation of the next dress.
10. As with any other process, the draping has its own set of disadvantages
too, that are listed below:
As the process is more of a creative and artistic one, it requires you to
have more talent and fashion sense.
The draping is also called as an expensive process with the involvement
of too many elements in one.
DISADVANTAGES OF THIS PROCESS
11. It would be no wrong if we say that most of the biggest fashion brands and houses & haute
couture design houses create, design and curate the fashion costumes with the aid of the
draping process.
It is considered to be an extremely important process; for it lets the fashion designers get a
sense by visualizing the final look of the dress or the costume.
It allows them to see how the outfit is going to look on the body and can instantly work up on the
alterations and amendments as required in the designing and aesthetic of the costume.
Also, some of the fashion garments are impossible to be crafted and designed by using the flat
pattern technique and thus always require the draping technique and process to be followed at
first.
IMPORTANCE OF THE FASHION DRAPING PROCESS
12. If you have a dress form that isn’t quite the right size or shape to duplicate your figure, it’s not
useful for creative draping. The first step in no rules draping is to get your dress form looking
more like you.
The closer your form is to your size and shape, the more successful your draping is going to
be. Begin with a form that’s as similar as possible to your measurements, but not larger.
You can pad a dress form, but you can’t squeeze it down to get to the right size. Start with the
neck and shoulders, and work your way down.
Here are a few of my dress form hacks to help you get the perfect size and shape.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR DRESS FORM
13. SHOULDER PADS
I have broad shoulders.
No dress form on the market has shoulders that come close to mine.
To increase the shoulder breadth on my form, I ganged up a couple of shoulder pads from those old ’80s power suits
and, voilà—dress form shoulders.
