“Oh GOSH! Reflecting on Hackteria's Collaborative Practices in a Global Do-It...
Contents Page Analysis
1. Contents Page
Images:
The main image is of ‘John Lennon’, as you can see the image is very serious, this could reflect on the sort of artist he
is and his personality. This isn’t a image taken by Q as John Lennon was shot dead. The image that is used shows him
as young man sitting down on a wooden chair. He has his arms on his legs and his legs are crossed. Although he looks
serious, he looks comfortable and approachable. Q has chosen this image as he was widely known as a influential
artists for decades, therefore it appeals to their target audience, men and women. The fact that the image is in black
and white reinforces the idea that he is a classic artist that has been around for decades and that his music is still
living on today. He has also been given a respectful representation, as many people look up to him for many different
reasons. The image colour also links to the house style. The other images on the double page contents page aren’t as
important as the main one, this is shown as they are much smaller than the main picture. The other images relate to
the genre of music, all R&B, Rock, and alternative. Usually the other artists wont be as well known as the main image
artist, they may be upcoming or aspiring artists.
Title:
The title is written in the same house style as the rest of the magazine, this adheres to the codes and conventions
of the magazine. This also relates to the target audience, which is male, Q have chosen to use dark colours and bold
letters as that is what attracts men, as it is seen as more bold, powerful and masculine. The title is also bordered
unlike all the other text on the double page contents page. The colours used again link to the house style.
Page Numbers:
The page numbers are written at the bottom of the page, and next to each topic being discussed. This is a code and convention of music magazines as they are informing readers where
to go to read on about a certain topic. They NEVER use the word ‘page’ they just write the number either before or after each topic. The colour of the numbers follow the house scheme,
they are in black like the ‘contents’ title and they are also written in bold font.
Headings and Subheadings:
Subheadings are used to give the reader/audience an idea of what the article is about and what they will find in each section. They are both written in bold and have think underline to emphasise the
importance of each article, again following the house scheme. The only main headings on the contents page is ‘Features’ and ‘Regulars’, they are both written in a separate style to other article headings,
this is to show that they are important. The ‘Features’ section is mostly there to inform the reader what is in this weeks/months issue. Where as the ‘Regulars’ is articles, or topics that is commonly used
or seen in other issues. These are things that recurring readers will be interested in reading, for example ‘Q Quiz’, if the regular audience take part in this every issue they buy then they will look for this
automatically.
Date, Issue Number and Subscription Information:
The date is there so collectors can see when the issue was released and when the next one will be released. In addition to that collectors will also use the issue number to see if they have that issue or
not. Magazines usually have subscription on it so that more potential subscribers will subscribe to their magazine. Some times they include offers which may attract more readers to subscribe to the
magazine.
Summaries of articles and Layout:
On contents pages the layout is usually set in blocks so it is easy for the reader to read information without getting confused. This adheres to the codes and conventions of music magazines and
magazines in general. There will also never be a blank space on a contents page, it will always be crammed full with information. The summaries of each articles are underneath each heading, they
basically briefly tell the audience what each section is about in a few words. They will usually create tension, sometimes they used little jokes that fans will understand. The summaries will link to the
pictures used.
2. Images:
There are 3 images on this single contents page, they are all fairly large but don’t fill up the entire space of the page. All images are taken of different
acts/artists and are taken in different settings and locations. The biggest photo and the main image of the contents is of singer songwriter ‘Pharrel
Williams’ this is a taken from a midshot, he has both of his hands up to his face and his holding a phone up to his ear. He has a very relaxed facial
expression and his body language and posture reinforces this. Pharrel is looking straight at the camera which is called direct address, he is aware that
he is being photographed. He is wearing a blue top with animated skiing characters on it which tells the audience that he is fun and doesn’t take
himself to seriously. He is also wearing a darker pair of blue jeans and a blue snapback to match this outfit. Additionally his tattoos are on show which
makes him seem more masculine and ‘cool’. Also you can see that he is showing off a lot of expensive jewellery and accessories, he's wearing a sparkly
ring, a watch and a belt. We can assume that these items are worth a lot of money as he is a well known famous and very rich singer and so he can
afford these luxury's. This is also reinforced by the fact he is standing in front of a pool, and the weather looks very sunny, which we can assume means
he lives in a very nice house in a very hot place. Lastly there is a white box with some text telling the audience who this is on the picture. Directly next
to the picture of Pharrel is another photo, which is sort of a long shot/midshot picture as you don’t see the whole of both models but you do see the
majority of their bodies. The duo are a well known rock band called ‘the kills’, their body language presents them as a typical rock and roll star,
slouched, uninterested and moody. They don’t look like they are taking much interest in the fact that there is a camera there and they are just getting
on with things. Additionally their physical appearance also adheres to their stereotype and the way they are being presented, they both look slightly
grubby and messy. They both are wearing dark outfits and leathery jackets, this gives them a edgy look, additionally they look as if they are on a tour
bus and that reinforces their rocky, edgy look. One of the duo has a guitar placed on his lap and is on the phone not taking any notice of anything
around him and the second of the duo is slouched on a sofa with a cigarette in his hands which exemplifies the fact he is suppose to be a ‘rock star’.
The last picture on the contents page is of Justin Timberlake and it looks as if its been taken outside. Justin is dressed in a white and black suit and the
picture angle is taken from a worms eye view. He has his hands in his trouser pockets, although you cant see his facial expression you can tell that he's
trying to give off a ‘cool’ look about him.
Layout:
The title of the page ‘Table of contents’ Is placed at the top of the page so that people can automatically see what the page is about. The page is set out quite simple and straight forward, it follows the
codes and conventions of a normal contents page as there are no white gaps anywhere, every space is being used and filled. Additionally it has a main picture where the attention is directed to, and this
is shown as the picture is much brighter than the others which means its contrasting, so it stands out, additionally it is the bigger picture, and therefore it fills more of the page, the page is also
uniformed well.
Sections:
The page is sectioned off into sections and category's, such as features, remix and headliners, these are used to separate the issues that are going to be discussed throughout the magazine, they
averagely have around 8/9 articles in each section. Under each article title is a small description informing the reader what the article is about in more depth. For example; under the features section is
the article title ‘FASHION ROCKS PRESENTS’ in capital bold letters, this is to clearly show that this is the article title. Then next to it in sentence case letter is ‘Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban,
Beyoncé, Chris Brown, the Black Eyed Peas, and Rihanna’. As I said earlier this is further information for the reader about the article. However surprisingly there is no page number which is usually
conventional for a magazine of this much status. They have used a colour scheme of black and red, all of the section heading are in black bold capped words and they then the headings for the articles
are in black again, however the ‘T’ in the ‘Table of contents’ is in red where as the rest of the word is in black. Similarly the heading ‘FASHION ROCKS’ is written in red in the middle of the page. There is a
separate section in the bottom left hand corner which refers to the cover story, it reads ‘ON THE COVER’ and underneath is a small paragraph telling us more about the cover and underneath this is the
picture which if referred to earlier of Justin Timberlake. There is also no reference to social media/publishing/subscription information which is very unusual for a magazine of this sort. However they do
reference an editors letter.
