2. What Types of Magazine and Target Audiences has IPC Been
Associated With Over the Years?
In the early 1800’s, IPC’s target audience was middle class males who are educated. This is
obvious to me because of the fact IPC were publishing newspapers. Due to a change in
technology, IPC began to publish magazines which helped to reach a wider audience.
IPC has always been associated with specific magazines that cater to specific genres. For
example in the late 1800’s, “Country Life” “Horse and Hound”, “Amateur Gardening”, “Shooting
Times” and “Amateur Photographer” were magazines published by IPC that are very genre
specific. “Country Life” magazine is targeted towards older women who are interested in the
country side lifestyle. These women would be generally white due to the time era of the 1800’s,
there were not many black people living in the countryside. They would also be higher class as
homes outside of the city tend to be more expensive.
“Loaded” magazine was published in the 1990’s and is practically
the exact opposite to the style of magazine that is “Country Life”.
“Loaded” is a lot more aggressive and direct in its approach to
attract an audience of males rather than females.
3. Why Might IPC Be an Appropriate Publisher For a New
Music Magazine?
0 In the 1990’s , IPC published NME which was a massive success and led to becoming the first
major UK music magazine to gets its own website. This will act as an inspiration to other
producers of music magazines that theirs will also be as successful as NME if they choose IPC
as their publisher.
0 Despite having only one huge success story with music magazines, IPC have had many
experience with all types of magazines so I am sure that if a decent magazine was produced,
then IPC will be able to print and distribute these copies very successfully.
4. What Sort of Genres of Music/Types of Magazines Might
They Be Likely to Publish?
0 IPC will probably continue to publish the same genre of music magazine as “NME”. This is the
Rock/Indie genre. They will continue to publish this genre because it will allow them to focus
entirely on one genre per magazine topic, which will keep the producers happy as they know
they are getting the publishers full attention.
