1. What types of magazine and target audiences has IPC been associated with over the years?
In the early 1900’s IPC started of with magazines that focused on particularly popular magazines at
the time such as gardening, hunting and yachting. The next big thing they focused on was magazines
that focused on the lifestyles of women and in the 1920’s the first magazine which influenced lifestyles
were then brought out. The first music and TV magazines weren’t brought out until the 1950s following
the sudden popularity of music and the arrival of ITV.
Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine?
I feel that IPC would be an appropriate publisher for a new magazine because of all the previous
successful ones they have published over the years such as NME. Also because they have such a
good brand name and reputation having them publish a new music magazine would instantly make it
slightly popular because the audience would know their previous successful and good magazines
therefore wanting to read them.
What sorts of genres of music/types of magazines might they be likely to publish?
I think that they would want to only publish magazines focusing on a genre of music that they feel is
popular and would have a large audience wanting to purchase it. This is because they wouldn’t want
to put a magazine that isn’t likely to do well on the market as they wouldn’t make much profit.
Therefore genres of music I feel they would be likely to publish would be genres such as Pop or Rock
as they appear to have the biggest and more loyal fans than other genres are likely to have.
Why might alternative publishers like Bauer be appropriate?
Bauer magazine appears to focus a lot on the younger audience which is the age group that is more
interested in music and wants to keep up to date with the artists and music in that particular genre. As
they are good at promoting magazines for younger readers that would make them good at doing this
for a music magazine focusing on younger readers.
