1. Research Task 4 – Research into music
industries and institutions Q1-3
2. 1800’s to 1900’s
• IPC launched The Field in 1853 which was a newspaper came the largest
newspaper in Europe within a year. As the newspaper became large in Europe
there would be a potential wider audience attraction in Europe and different
countries as people would want to know what is so good about it. After this, IPC
produced magazines such as Shooting Times, Yachting World and Country Life
which genre is all hobbies. All these magazines are stereotypical produced for the
target audience of white, rich, high class males dedicated to their hobbies after
work while their wives were looking after their children. This is because at this
time people lived in a more Patriarchy society and women were meant to do
domestic chores in the house. They then produced their first magazine which
included promotion which was where the audience could guess the right answer
to the question given then they received £1 every week for their life.
3. 1920’s – 1940’s
• Ideal home was then produced. This is significance for the start of equality in
media, Ideal homes is potentially more of a female magazine because of the
stereotype’s of women in homes at this period of time so therefore it shows that
IPC are moving away from the target audience of rich, white, upper class males
and now moving onto a wider audience of females. It could still be argued that the
target audience is rich, white, upper class females so the target audience is not as
branched out as it could be.
• In 1932, a magazine which was 100% dedicated to women was produced, this was
called Women’s Own. IPC focused on the promotions by included more cover
mounts into magazines. For Women’s Own which the genre is gossip they chose to
include a cover mount which is a stereotype of domestic women at the time, this
was three skeins of wool. This would have attracted women into buying the
magazine because they would have been brought up with the hobby of knitting.
Also because it is a gossip magazine the audience would be expanding even more.
4. 1950’s – 1970’s
• IPC then produced NME which the genre is music will be similar to the music
magazine I will create. NME set the ball rolling with its compilation of the first
official UK record chart. What else which was produced was Tv Times etc. This
shows that IPC are moving with the times about what people are starting to get
into. Also in the 1800’s there was no Tv’s so there wasn’t a need for a ‘Tv Time’
therefore it shows that ICP are also moving with the technology.
• In 1969 IPC produced ‘Shoot’ which the genre was sport and was a football
magazine. This shows that IPC are now moving onto an even bigger audience
which is middle class, white males. Now LPC have the audience of white, rich,
upper class males. They also have Women and now lower classes.
5. 1980’s – 1990’s
• In the 1980’s IPC chose to produce a new magazine known as Essentials which the
genre was British lifestyle, which was a sell out and after only six issues it launched
in France. In the 1990’s IPC then began to produce TV listings which shows people
what's on the TV, this would be popular to nearly everyone who watches TV so this
shows that in 1990 IPC were still branching out to new audiences. NME which was
produced by IPC became the first major UK music title to get its own internet site.
This then became Europe’s most popular music website.
6. Why IPC is good for my new magazine.
• IPC are not scared at taking risks, this is shown when in the 1920’s to 1940’s they
produced a magazine only for women, back then in the Patriarchy society all
women would do is complete domestic chores so this was a big risk to take. This
shows to me that they wouldn’t mind taking a risk with my magazine.
• IPC are also very loyal and guarantee success for magazines. This is shown as Ideal
Home was first produced in the 1920’s and still today is produced. This tells me
that if Ideal Home have stuck with IPC they must be good at their job.
• They also have a lot of money. This is good as they can produce my magazine with
promotions such as in the 1900’s where they did a competition for £1 a week to
any reader who guesses the answer to a question for a life time.
7. Bauer
• The Bauer Media Group is one of the most successful media companies in the
world. It includes the key markets of Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand, Poland
and the USA and has a presence in 20 Countries. This shows that they have links
everywhere and they have a huge audience. In the 1920’s they produced their first
sport magazine. In the 1950s and 1960s Bauer were very successful with its youth
magazines. In the 1970’s they produced their first women's magazine which was
Women Weeklies.
8. Which Company Do I Prefer for my magazine?
• I prefer IPC, this is simply because they’re so loyal towards the
magazines. This is shown by magazines being produced over
20years ago still being produced by the same company. I
believe this is good for my magazine because if my magazine
was to become successful I would know that IPC would be
loyal towards me.
