IPC began publishing magazines in the 1850s and over time expanded their catalog to include magazines targeted towards various interests and demographics. In the early 1900s, IPC introduced some of the first women's magazines and began including free gifts. During World War II, IPC's magazines played a key role in raising morale on the home front. IPC continued expanding their offerings throughout the 20th century to match emerging interests and trends, and was acquired by The Reed Group in the 1970s.

3. 1800s In 1853 there was a magazine called ‘the field’
this magazine was released by IPC and was on the topic
of the Crimean war. This magazine became the best
seller within a single year.in the late 1800s there were
several new magazines that came onto shelves and
theses again were published by IPC. These magazines
were mainly hobby/special interest magazines. They are
ranged from ‘Shooting Times’ to ‘The Railway Magazine’.
These magazines are mainly aimed at men that are in
the upper class bracket with and very strong income.
There are 2 or three that were aimed at women such as
‘Country Life’ and ‘Amateur Gardening’. In 1889 they
had the best prize of their time. They had included a
competition where the prize was £1 a week for life. This
doesn’t sound like much today but back then it was a
very big amount of money to the public and IPC where
rich enough to give this money away but now we have
prizes of £ 1000000 or more.
4. 1900s
1920s IPC reached out to the female market of special
interest magazines. Magazines such as ‘Ideal Home’ were
released rather than. This magazine was produced by a
captain who was from the army and was making this
magazine as it was aimed towards people who likes to
help others as he thought that there needed to be
houses built for soldiers after they come back from war.
5. In the 1930s saw a woman’s only magazine called
‘woman’s own’ this was aimed at women who were of a
high class and had a lot of money. The first issue of this
magazine had a free gift known as a cover mount which
was the first time that IPC included a free gift for their
magazines. This gift was for a very expensive hobby of
knitting. This is why the women who brought the
magazine had a high income from their husbands. The
first issue also only cost 2d which wasn’t a lot of money
ad it was really good value for money as it was the first
ever full colour magazine produced. This would mean IPC
would be a good choice for me as a publisher of a
magazine as they can get decent quality magazine to sell
for a cheap price which means that more people would
buy it.
6. 1940s saw a key war time role with magazines. This
came especially from women’s magazines as the men
were off fighting on the front line. They were aiming to
raise the morale of the women back at home as they
were helping the war effort back on home soil. These
magazines were closely linked with the government as
they were allowed to print information that would
otherwise be kept from the public. This would mean that
if they were the publishers of my magazine then I could
have the possibility of having up to date information that
people would not find out as easy if it wasn’t in the
magazine.
7. 1950s saw the new arrivals of music magazines. These
magazines had sections such as top charts of all the
popular music as it wasn’t on the radio. Some of the big
magazines like NME were first published in this decade
and are still going to day and are stronger than ever. TV
listing magazines were also introduced to the collection
so that anyone who could afford a tv could see when
their favourite programmes were on and what channel
they were on. This was mainly aimed at the higher
classes as lower class people could not afford a television
but now televisions are easy to acquire and the
magazines are cheaper and available to everyone.
8. There was a lot of new hobbies that became very popular
in the 1960s. This meant that IPC had to create a new set
of special interest magazines. They ranged from ‘Shoot’
to ‘Family Circle’. These magazines really took off as
more people where becoming interested in theses types
of things and were also being able to afford more things
such as magazines. The Shoot magazine was the best
selling magazine in the decade due to the famous world
cup victory from England and Bobby Charlton in 1966.
9. This was the decade when IPC was acquired by the company
known as The Reed Group. And formed the giant global
corporation Reed International. Also IPC had visits from the
Royal Family who featured in some of their magazines which
would be good publicity for my magazine having famous
figures in my magazine ass people would want to read about
them and what they have to say.
10. This was the decade when expanded its selling regions to abroad. Their main target
was Europe. The first international title released was Marie Claire in 1988. IPC
editorial awards are introduced by the company to boost and honour editorial
excellence. Several new interest magazines that are classed as essential took off so
well in the UK that they decided to lunch them in France and they were selling out
quicker than they ever had before.
11. Televisions, became more affordable. There was one
thing wrong, no one knew what was on the TV and
when its was on. This is where IPC decided that they
would release a magazine with the times and channels
of all the shows that will be put on TV. This magazine
was really popular because it helped people to see
their favourite television programme rather than miss
it. This would mean that IPC are a good publisher for
my magazine because they can add a section which is
like the TV listings but release dates of Tour, Albums
and other merchandise.
12. The turn of the century saw IPC renamed. IPC
Media a new identity to go with a new strategy.
The new strategy was to be a brand-centric
company. New Men interest magazines are released
such as: Nuts magazine in 2004 and this had an
£8million marketing investment which is IPC’s
biggest in their history.
13. Bauer media is Europe's largest privately owned publishing group. They also initially published
magazines that are special interest magazines and are on the topic of Angling times and Motorcycle
News. Which they still publish today. They are a business built on influential brands rather than just
any random style of brand. This would be good for me as they could make an impact on sales as
music magazines are one of their special features of the influential marketing scheme. This would be
better than IPC as they don’t have the same influential scheme as Bauer which may mean that they
cant make my magazine as influential as Bauer could.
