Audience survey results
1. My magazine is aimed at both a male and female
audience so it was important to me that I got
questionnaire results from both men and women to
know what both are looking for in my magazine. I
wanted to have an understanding of their interests
and what they would be looking for so that I could
take this into account when making my magazine. I
understand how important it is to grasp my
audience’s wants and needs in order to cater for
them so they will want to purchase my magazine.
My target audience falls between the 16-25 bracket
so I wanted to ask people around that age to
answer my questionnaire. I understand that
different ages have different interests so it was
important to me that I got an idea of what both
wanted from my magazine. Eve though they can’t
account for my whole audience, I do think it’s
important to take into consideration their age as it
could mean that I rule out their results completely.
2. This was an important question for me to ask as my magazine is
specifically looking at 60s music. Asking this question allowed me
to understand if the people I was asking would be interested in
my magazine. I was careful not to completely rule out their
responses if they preferred a different decade of music because
it doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be interested in my magazine.
However, I did focus more on results from people who liked 60s
music, when looking at results individually, as I knew they would
be my key audience.
This question was important following my pitch so that I
could ensure I was going in the right direction and that the
genre and overall style of my magazine was clear. There are
a number of conventions that I planned to use with the
intention of making the style of my magazine clear from the
cover. I understood that as the maker it can seem like the
style is clear as that’s what I’m aiming to do, but as a reader
seeing it for the first time it may not be as clear which is why
it was important for me to get an outsider’s view.
3. I asked this question because I thought it would be a good way
of understanding which artists readers themselves thought
would feature in my magazine. I had an idea of some artists
myself but wanted to see what potential readers thought, and I
also thought it would give me an indication of what they would
want to see as well. I found it interesting that both old and
modern artists were suggested. This is the kind of route that I
was looking to go down and I was happy to see that people were
suggesting ideas that were similar to that.
When pitching the idea for my magazine, I set the price at £6
after looking at some other magazines and taking into
consideration the fact that my magazine would be published
monthly. However, after looking at the results of my
questionnaire, I realised £6 wasn’t a suitable price that my
readers would be willing to pay. Also, I thought a lower price
would probably be a lot more suitable for a new magazine in
order to fit into the market and attract readers and then
overtime, the price could be increased.
4. The inspiration behind this question was an idea of having a feature in
my magazine that looked at an icon band or artist that fit into the
genre of my magazine. When thinking of how I would answer this
question and when asking people around me, I realised that most
people answer with a classic artist rather than a more modern artist.
When looking at the responses, I did take into account that some of
the results had come from people who were more interested in other
decades of music so their artist/band would be from that decade. The
most popular result was The Beatles, which fits into my magazine
genre perfectly. This would be a good band to include as a special
feature in my magazine.
This question was important for the same reason as the question
that asked which decade people felt my magazine reflected. After
making my pitch it was important to me that the genre and style
were communicated clearly and the audience had a clear
understanding of the genre so it wasn’t misleading. The results
show that other than one result, everybody could see that my
magazine fit into the pop genre. However, I plan on making some
changes to my magazine in the hopes of making this a bit more
clear to the reader.
5. This was the most important question in terms of showing me what readers really want to see in a
magazine. This is an important factor in any magazine as the readers are the people that need to be
impressed so they will continue to purchase my magazine. The only areas where people showed interest
were upcoming gigs, interviews and music articles. All of these will then be features in my magazine in order
to cater to their wants and needs. The most popular choice was interviews so I will be sure to consider this
when making my contents page and going into more depth with the contents of each feature.
