3. Research – Existing Products
For my existing products research I did some research and annotating magazine
front covers, contents pages, back covers, double page spreads mainly including
the action genre or non fiction, as my film idea was based off that. These were
from magazines such as Empire, ScreenDaily, Film Stories etc. I annotated them all
and included points such as the connotations of the colours, images, characters,
similar themes, how it appeals to their audience etc. This existing products
research definitely helped me with my production as I knew what similar style to
do my magazine as, e.g. having a setting background and main characters on the
front cover, list of contents for the contents page with a main character, etc. The
weaknesses of my product was that I only did existing products for my magazine,
not for my trailers/advert. I have watched several trailers before, especially before
I watch a film to see what it is about, so I had some research and experience
watching them. If I did do these for my existing products it could've influenced
how my final trailer would be like. I did several effects such as the typewriter
effect or glitch typing effect that I have seen before, and having the trailer build
tension by starting off calm and getting more intense as it goes on, and also
having a new character revealed at the end after the credits/film title, I have
learnt these from watching trailers, especially action ones as it is the same genre
as mine, so my trailer/advert could've been better.
4. Research – Audience
• For my audience research I made a google form and asked questions to my age demographic
primary target audience (teenagers, age 12 – 18) such as: 'what stands out the most in a magazine
cover?', I asked this so I knew what I could include in my magazine cover to appeal to the target
audience. This helped my product because the answers were 80% about the character and
background, which is why I made sure I had my background setting where my film idea is filmed
and set (in a forest in malton), and the main character (mysterious man) on the front, and his head
is infront of the title to show his importance in the film. 'What is your favourite genre of films?', this
was so I knew what genre I could base my film idea around, and it helped my product because the
main ones were action and adventure, which were the main genres of my film idea for my
trailer/advert. 'Is there any films coming out in 2021 that you're interested in?', this is so I knew
what 3 films I could write about, and it effected my product because I wrote about Fast and Furious
9, Godzilla vs Kong and Spider-Man: No Way Home, this is so I can appeal to my target audience as
from this market research, I can tell my audience are into these films. 'What is your favourite film?'
I asked this question because I did a section called 'audience's favourite films' on a double page
spread, so it was important and effective on my magazine because I chose to write about Avengers:
Infinity War, Fast and Furious 9, 1917 and Spider-Man 3 as I got these from my market research.
'Which one would you rather read about? Films to be released soon or film that are already out.',
this was an influence on my product because I wanted to know which one I could write about, and
as the votes were close, I chose to do both, but I did more about films that are coming out soon as
it got more votes. I also googled most anticipated marvel films of 2021 because lots of answers on
my google form was about marvel, therefore I knew it was popular with my target audience. I can
improve my audience market research by having more answers on the questionnaire to get more
answers and more varified answers, and my answers were similar to an interview, therefore I
should've had more 'other' options instead of having 'yes/no' answers.
5. Research – Comparing To Existing
Products
• After doing a lot of research, I am comparing my final products to my existing products research. My front cover
and the existing products both have a background where the film is set, also with a main character on the front to
assert their dominance and importance in the trailer/film idea, they also have information as to what is inside of
the magazine too, as mine says the film inside, the article number and month, an orange sticker to advertise
behind the scenes photos, and advertising the exclusive interviews inside to appeal to my target audience. Similar
to the Infinity War Empire front cover, it has a coloured banner at the top to advertise something, mine advertises
information on upcoming 2021 films on it, and the Empire one has the two magazine bumper pack. My back cover
is similar to the Harry Potter one I researched in my existing products, they both have the magazine masthead,
with information on what is inside, I did quotes on the back with interviews about my trailer I wrote about, and
from my research it had the films inside, what the interviewees talk about inside etc, and I did a list of the films
inside on my front cover. They also did extras like a barcode, their website link etc, and I did a barcode on the front
cover. With my contents page, it is similar how it had a character from a film inside, it was Thorin from The Hobbit
and on my contents page it was Spider-Man, they were both images of the character on a coloured background to
emphasise the character, I also added my masthead and the article month, which the Empire one did too. I did 6
double page spreads for my magazine, and in my research, I looked at 2 different ones, I had big images on my
double page spread of the character, similar to the screendaily one, also with an extra box of information similar
to the new films one I also had bold mastheads and film titles throughout. This means the research was very
successful and helpful for my final product.
6. Planning
• I did a lot of planning for both my graphic design (magazine) and video
production (trailer/advert), including front cover, back cover, contents
page, double page spread layouts, risk assessments, style sheet images,
style sheet fonts, colour schemes, equipment list and budget for my film
magazine. I also did a risk assesment, storyboard, shot list, equipment list,
script, call sheet and budget for my trailer/advert and resources,
contigency plan, health and safety sheet and production schedule for both
of them. The strengths of this planning was that it made it easier to make
it final product in production and made it easier for me to understand
what I wanted to do and made me think of some new good ideas too,
especially new fonts, images, layouts I wanted to use for my magazine on
Photoshop and new shots, fonts, effects for my trailer/advert on
PremierePro.
7. Planning – Comparing to my final
product
• I made several layout for my front cover, back cover, double page spreads and contents page, and I kept my final
product layout, with the front cover having a green masthead, brown title, information and the background of my
character. The contents page is the same, with some extra boxes and a masthead on top on the final product, and
my double page spread layouts are similar but slightly different on each on my magazine, and it is like my planning
with the image, fun fact box etc. The back cover is also very similar having the masthead, quotes/interviews on the
back etc. I added effects to all of these pages to make it more eye-catching and appealing to my audience, such as
a stroke, emboss etc on my mastheads. I used very similar images from my style sheet, as I used my own images
for my front cover and back cover that I showed on my layouts. I used similar fonts from my style sheet including,
lemon milk or mastheads, godzilla for the godzilla vs kong page, and I found new fonts to use such as Louis George
Café for my paragraphs and writing inside of the magazine. My colour schemes were also the same as in the
planning, yellow, orange, green and brown for my front and back covers, and red, blue and white for my contents
page. I used all the equipment in the equipment list too and made sure I had enough for my budget. For my video
production (trailer/advert) I used my storyboard and shot list and stuck to it throughout filming. I made sure the
length of my shots were similar so I could have my trailer to be 2 minuites long An improvement for my planning
would be to make a storyboard and shot list for my advert, but I didn't because I used the same footage for my
advert with a few extra shots I took on the day. The clothing was the same on the day as it was in planning,
despite I took my photos a different day to filming my trailer, therefore the photo of the character on the back
cover is wearing a different hoodie, it would be an improvement to make sure we did it on the same day or wore
the same clothes. On the day of filming, it was very windy and the audio wasn't very clear so we didn't use the full
script, at the start the two characters said 'where do you wanna go now?' Then "I'm not fussed" and before the
music gets more intense, the character says "oh no it's gonna be dark soon" after it says "before it's too late". I
made sure I didn't have music in the background when the characters were talking, and I made the audio even
louder to make it clearer what they're saying. To improve next time I should film it close to the phone's
microphone to make their voices louder and clearer. I stuck to my equipment list and call sheet and budget.
8. Time Management – Pre-Production
• While doing pre-production, we were working at home due to lockdown
restrictions, so we had to come up with an idea at home, we worked
during college hours (9 – 4:30) and college days (Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday) during the day. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do at first, but I
had a lot of time at home to come up with an idea, and I chose to do a film
magazine with a trailer/advert for my film idea that will be on the front
cover of the magazine and inside. I preferred working inside college rather
than working from home but it gave me more time to think of my ideas for
my FMP project. Overall, despite working from home, I managed my time
well for pre-production and completed it all before Easter Holidays.
9. Time Management - Production
• We started production after Easter holidays, when we
started going into college every week, therefore we
had more time to work on our production using
Photoshop and PremierePro in college. We had 4
weeks of college, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
every week (not including Bank Holidays) from 12th
April to 5th May. I planned out my time management
for each day of each week on my planning so I knew
what I needed to do each day/week and tried to stay
on track so I can get it finished in time. Overall, the I
managed my time for production very well and got it
all finished in the 4 weeks
10. Time Management – Post-Production
• We are also in college every week, Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday for post-production,
so we have lots of time in lessons to finish it.
We have 2 weeks for post-production and
evaluating work from 10th May until the 19th
May, and the deadline is 21st May, so we have
a few extra days at home to finish the work if
needed. Overall, I managed my time well for
post-production and I will finish it before the
deadline on 21st May at 4pm.
11. Technical Qualities - Magazine
A large text box on
the right, it is a red
box edited with the
emboss effect to
make it bold and look
3D, this appeals
visually to the
audience more
A darker red stroke on the masthead
and subheading text to make it more
eye-catching to the audience
The ground is darker, this
is to make the film title
stand out more with the
black stroke, and to show
the darkness and
mystery of the character
standing above it
The colours of the leaves and sky are
darker, it is a front cover so I wanted
to make it as appealing as I could, but
I edited for them to be darker
shades/colours to emphasise the
mystery of the character
This existing product from my
research edited a box of two shades
of blue behind the title to make it
stand out, similar to mine but I used
a darker coloured stroke
12. Technical Qualities – Trailer/Advert
The dip to black transitions add to the element of tension
building up with the audience, and the characters getting
deeper into the forest
The sky gets darker as the mysterious man
approaches, this is using an effect called change
to colour, I changed it from the colour it was
already (light blue) and made it a darker shade
as the scenes went on
13. Aesthetic Qualities – Magazine Front
Cover
Orange banner and sticker
to advertise what's inside
the magazine, with
screenshots of inside pages.
This will stand out and be
eye-catching to the
audience to appeal to them
and what's inside, it is also
used on other film
magazines. Yellow text
because it stands out on the
orange background and fits
with the colour scheme of
yellow, orange, green and
brown
Green masthead on a darker green
stroke, with emboss editing to make it
stand out. Green colour because it is
higher up with the leaves on trees
The main character in the middle of
the front cover with the head over
the masthead to show the
importance and dominance of the
character. This is common in film
magazines. I edited the coat to
make it brighter so you can tell
what he is wearing. Wearing darker
clothes which have the
connotations of mystery and danger
Background of the location
the trailer is set, to show
where it is set
Brown film title because it is on
the ground, like the dirt, with a
darker black background to make
it more eye-cathing, with the font
to make it similar to the ground
with cracks and marks on it
Coverlines and writing on
the front has a darker
orange/brown stroke to
make it easier to read on
that background
14. Aesthetic Qualities – Magazine
Contents Page
White masthead with a
lighter shade on red on the
background to make it
stand out, with emboss
editing. I chose the colours
white, blue and red as this
colour scheme as this is the
same colours that
represent Spider-Man as I
write about that film in this
magazine
Whitw text with a blue
stroke and blue text with a
white stroke to make them
both stand out differently
as one is the title and the
other is a date, and the
contents page title is more
importance which is why it
is bigger
Blue box to advertise my film trailer and advert is out now to want people to read on to the
last few pages to read about my film idea. An image of Spider-Man hanging down and
pointing to the list of contents to appeal to my psychographic target audience who watch
these films and will recognise him .
15. Aesthetic Qualities – Magazine Double
Page Spread
Behind the scenes images
that were advertised on
the front and back cover, if
there is too much writing it
might be not what the
audience would expect, so
it is appealing
Fun fact box is the same
colour as the text on the
left page, which is the
opposite to make them
both stand out
Masthead is the same as
the front and back cover,
so the audience will
recognize it
16. Aesthetic Qualities – Magazine Back
Cover
Same masthead and film
title on the front cover, so
the audience will recognise
it and keep it in mind for if
they want to watch the
trailer
Another character on the
back to show the audience
other characters in the
trailer, and him with his
head over the title shows
his importance at the end
of the trailer and to the
idea, as he helps the other
characters
Writing and quotes on the
back have the same font,
colour and stroke so it isn't
too different, and it is
easier to read. Also the
same orange circle as the
front cover to advertise
more of the behind the
scenes photos inside,
wanting them to read the
magazine
17. Aesthetic Qualities - Trailer
When the mysterious
character walk on, the
grass and sky gets darker
which connotes how he is
as a character and lets the
audience know he is the
villain
The blue sky gets darker as
the character approaches
every time
The colour scheme is
similar to the colour
scheme on my magazine so
if the audience watch the
trailer they will be
interested in the magazine
cover too, or the other way
around.
18. Audience Appeal - Magazine
I appealed to my audience by having a section in
my magazine called audiences favourite films,
where I talk about all my favourite films from my
audience's responses I got on my google forms
questionnaire, I also said this in my extra box of
information to make it interactive with the
audience and to make them feel like their
favourite film can be inside the magazine.
My age demographic primary
target audience are teenagers,
aged 13 – 18. My psychographic
primary target audience is
someone who watches films and
enjoys them and reading about
them. Teenagers filled out my
questionnaire so I got the
answers I wanted
I also used what the
audience said stands out
on my front cover to make
it appealing to them
looking at it, to make them
want to read the magazine
19. Audience Appeal – Trailer/Advert
• I made my film idea an action and adventure film because of
the answers on my market research, on my questionnaire. It
also had elements of the horror genre in the main character. I
also appealed to my audience by making it relatable at the
start, which is the first part people see, it is two friends having
fun and having a normal day playing football, until it changes.
It is also set in a forest in a town,
which means lots of my target
audience (teenagers) could have a
forest in their town/area, so it
could be interesting for them to
keep watching
21. Feedback 1 – from Karl Shepherd,
media student
• What did you like about the product?
• "I think the trailer overall is good, I like the way the music
fits what's happening very well. The front cover looks great,
the articles are grabbing and the font fit the article.""
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
• "The ending is a bit abrupt with the music and the scene
cutting off so that could be smoothed out. There is maybe a
little too much text on the double page spreads which can
be a little boring so an interactive section like a quiz for
example could make it interesting."
22. Feedback 2 – from Sam Smith, media
student
• What did you like about the product?
• "I like the trailer, it builds up tension and creates the
emotions for the characters, especially how the two
friends are feeling, scared. The magazine is good with
the images on each page."
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
• "I think it could be better with the audio at the end of
the trailer, it cuts off all of a sudden at the end of the
title, it would be better if it faded out."
23. Feedback 3 – Harry Smith
• What did you like about the product?
• "I enjoyed how the advert is similar to the trailer, with a
few new shots too, and how the colours schemes are good
and fitting for the films you are writing about. Showing
another character at the end of the trailer is like what they
do in action films, which is good."
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
• "The music could be better if the music was more smooth
at the end of the trailer, it cut off instead of slowing down."
24. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• I agree with my peer feedback, especially with the audio part, it would be a lot better if the audio
faded at the end, with the non copyright music I used, the music got more intense but it didn't slow
down as much towards the end, and if I cut it throughout the trailer, it could sound abrupt at
different times through the trailer. I agree with how you can tell what the characters emotions are
like for the two friends in the trailer, as they're scared, and you can't tell much about the
mysterious man because that's his role as a character. I agree with the front cover and article
colours and fonts working well, I spent a lot of time planning my fonts and even found some new
ones while doing my production too. I agree with tension building up throughout the trailer,
especially with the music as they go deeper and deeper into the forest, as this was my plan for the
trailer.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I disagree to an extent with having too much text on some double page spreads, I agree with it
being quite boring to look at, so I should've done an interactive part, such as a quiz like the
feedback says, on a different double page to include as well as the wiriting. I added in the fun fact
boxes and lots of images and colours on the double page spreads, to make it look more visually
appealing, and not lots of writing on a page as some of my target audience may not like it.
25. Peer Feedback Summary
I would make a few changes from my peer feedback, it was good to see what
people thought of my FMP work. I would make the text bigger on my double page
spread writing, to make it more visable, from the feedback I got to make it more
visual appealing to my audience. I also would make some of the images/fun fact
boxes bigger to make it more appealing and interesting for the target audience to
look at. I will also try and make the music different at the end so it can sound
better, and make a few adjustments in the film advert when the audio switches
from one to another to make it a smoother transition.
