3. Research
My research was very valuable to creating my final product. At first I wasn’t sure what
I was going to do for my FMP, I did some research into what I could do outdoors that
would require a video because that is what I wanted to do. Whilst doing my research I
found an advertisement for Great Britain this video inspired me to create my FMP.
The strengths of my research was the poster, National Railways made many of these
posters in a particular style which I really liked. This research helped my product
because I made a poster very similar to those, the layout is similar and the image I
put a oil paint filter on it because the image on the original poster was a painting. For
print again I created some postcards I did some research into different types of
postcards and came across the 1950’s American style postcards, I really liked the
design so I replicated it using my own photos, this helped my product because it
shows the places I filmed in the letters which supplements my video. The video I
researched was an advertisement for Great Britain I really like the style of this video it
influenced my video a lot. I liked how it was a quick shot after quick shot, this helped
my FMP Video because when it came to planning the shots and editing them I already
knew what I wanted so it was easier to do.
I did some research which supplements my video, I researched information about the
things and locations that I filmed in my video. I think this research helped my product
because my video is to advertise Ripon and having some information on these places
adds a lot the the audience appeal because they might be more interested in visiting
when they hear about the history of these places.

inspiration from.

5. Research
The weaknesses of my research was that I didn’t do enough research on
things to film in Ripon, I knew of the bigger things in Ripon to look at but I
wish I did more research into some of the smaller details in Ripon that would
make it so my video would take you into the depths and details of Ripon. I
also should have looked at different types of posters for different layouts. I
only really looked at one poster so my posters look very similar.
6. Planning
• My strengths of my planning was I knew which locations I would film. This
allowed me to organise getting to these places and what days, for example I
had to book a time slot to go to Fountains Abbey. The planning allowed me to
have enough time in case something changes. I had also planned what shots I
wanted to do. This helped my product because I could arrive at the location
and know exactly what I want to film and how I’m going to do it, this meant I
could create the video in my head before even putting it into the software.
• My weaknesses in my planning was probably my scheduling of when I was
going to do things. I was a bit all over the place and mainly just filmed
whenever, I didn’t have a set plan of days I would film. If I had planned this
better I think I would have had more time to get footage and edit my work,
this would of improved my video because I could experiment more with
effects, and I would have had more footage to go through which means I
would have had a lot more options when selecting what footage I want to use.
7. Time Management
• I thought my time management was alright it was both good and bad. For
my production I thought my time management was good I was able to
finish my production on time with the schedule. My pre-production and
planning I didn’t manage my time right because I didn’t quite finish it
before my production, then I focused on my production so I ended up
completing my pre-production and planning late. I think if I had more time
my products may have improved. I would have done more shots for my
video and maybe make it longer and visually more appealing. For my print
if I had more time I would have explored more different types of posters
and postcards. I may have also gone into creating billboards and adverts to
put on buses and at bus stops for example.
8. Technical Qualities
Similarities
• The texts are both 3D with an orange
3D outside
• They both have inner white lines on
the words
• They both have images in the letters
• They both have a landscape image
• They both say “Greetings From”
Differences
• The Wyoming one is painted whereas mine is
all images
• Mine has a older look to it, its covered in
muck and dirt whereas the Wyoming one is
clean.
• The Wyoming one has a man riding a bull on it
whereas mine is just a landscape.
• The bend in the letters are different mine
goes up then slightly down, the Wyoming one
curves in an arc
• The Wyoming one does have like a slogan
under the name
9. Similarities
• The picture takes up most
of the poster
• They are both look like
paintings
• They both have similar font
on the name of the place
• The layout is very similar
• They both have writing
under the title and a small
note under the image of
where it is.
Ddifferences
• The colours are different mine is
looks bluer, theirs looks more
yellow/orange
• My title has got colours in it where's
theirs is black
• The sizes of text are different theirs is
a lot bigger
• Theirs has a company logo mine
doesn’t.
10. Similarities
• Both of building
• Both shot from a good distance away from
the building
• The colours are similar, browns, greys,
whites
• Both have blue sky over top
• Both photos are taken from a human eye
view
Differences
• Theirs was taking from the street mine
was from a car park
• Theirs is looking down the street
whereas mine is focused on the
buildings
• Mine has writing under it giving
information about the place theirs does
not
• Theirs has cars in the image mine
doesn’t
11. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work looks good, I thought it was relatively creative, some of my print is very
similar but overall it was quite different. The aspects of my production that I like are my
1950’s American style postcard I really like the colours of it and how it looks old, I also like
the style of fonts I used. To improve it I would of changed the colour balance off the images
in the letter because I feel like they stand out a bit too much and don’t look very old.
My strengths in my production were my print items, I thought I did a good job of putting it
all together, pictures and text, to create a good looking poster and postcard.
My weaknesses are in my video, there are some shots where you can see the sunlight
reflecting of my camera lens. And my posters I did look very similar to each other in terms
of layout.
12. The grey sky contrasts nicely with the white text, it makes
the text stands out and really draws your focus.
The horses in the image run under the words this give a
cool effect because as you read down the text on screen
your eyes are lead to these horses racing.
13. The postcard
itself looks old
because of the
brown tone to it
as well as the
marks of what
would be dirt.
The background
picture works
well because it
looks like it flows
with the text. A
lot of the
postcards I
researched had a
very plain
background
sometimes just a
colour, that is why
I went with a
simple landscape
image.
Because the image I took
was in the snow the white
really brings out the brown
patches on the postcard
making it easier to see the
age.
The text works well with the postcard because I
used quite dark colours to continue the old look
to it. The 3D look to it as well makes it stand out
and easier to read.
I like the slight
bend in the
writing it
changes the
postcard a lot
because it
makes it look
more interesting
and not boring
and straight.
The images in the letters add a lot to
the image it adds some extra colours
to the postcard. When you look at the
image there are more images in side a
bigger picture which I think is a cool
effect.
14. The image I used
looks like an oil
painting this changes
the poster because it
gives a cool effect to
the image that it
almost doesn’t look
like a real photo
which I like.
The colours on the little
flags add a lot of colour
to the image, I liked the
colours so I replicated
the colours and put it in
the text.
The white border
around the poster
makes it look more
professional and I think
it brings the focus point
to the image.
15. Very simplistic postcard.
Its quite brightly
coloured. I again added
an oil filter on this
postcard.
White border around
the image makes it
look more professional
and clean.
The white word
“Ripon” stand out
amongst everything
because its on a
plain blue
background where
there isn’t much
else happening. This
draws your eyes to
that word when you
first look at it.
16. The burn marks adds
detail to make the poster
and makes it look old and
distressed which ties in
with the old cathedral.
The way the text is laid
out with the underlined
text makes the poster
look very sophisticated.
The image is very grey, I
like this because it gives
off an eerie effect,
some of the edges of
the photo are darker
like its getting slightly
dirty, this just ties the
image in with the old
look of the poster.
17. Audience Appeal
I think a particular bit that would appeal to the audience would be the information I put with
my video. I think this appeals to the audience because I hope it would intrigue people into
wanting to learn more about Ripon, which would hopefully lead them to visit.
On my questionnaire I found that most people see adverts on social media or TV. My video
would be available on social media, like YouTube or it could be put on TV.
This is the factual information which I have put
on every location. With this information I hope
it would appeal to people because if they have
heard the history of the place they might get
interested and want to visit.
This is a wide shot
from far back I did
this shot so you
can get a good
view of what
Fountains Abbey
looks like. Being
able to see the
whole thing in the
advert helps
because people are
more likely to visit
when they know
what they are
coming to see.
When I did my
filming It is almost
like you are walking
there yourself
because of the way
I filmed it. I filmed it
walking through so
you can get an idea
of what it is like
being there.
18. In the word “Ripon” I
added in my own
photos which shows
the places I filmed in
my video and the
best places to go in
Ripon. I did this so if
someone gets this
postcard they will
have an idea of
what's in Ripon, this
might entice them to
go to Ripon.
I used a multiply
effect on my own
image and an
image of an old
postcard this gave
the effect of a
naturally old
photo on a
postcard. I did this
because I wanted
the audience the
want to know
more about the
history of Ripon.
This is an 1950’s American style postcard
For the text I used a 3D effect on all of them, I did this
so it would stand out and be easier to read when
looking at it. With the word ”Ripon” I made it so it looks
bent, this was common in the old American style
postcards so I did the same. I did this so it stands out to
the audience when they look at it.
19. On the flags in front
of the cathedral are
multiple different
colours. In the word
“Ripon” I replicated
the colour pattern,
this gives the effect
of similarities
throughout the
poster. This gives off
a good effect to the
audience because it
looks more
professional
There are lots of
bright and different
colours and
different fonts on
the poster. I did this
so when people
look at it, its more
pleasing to the eye
and it gives the
effect that Ripon is
a happy fun place to
be (which it is).
20. This is a simple designed
postcard. It gives the
audience a little snapshot
of what they will see in
Ripon.
I wanted to give the
effect that you are
standing there in
person when you look
at this postcard.
21. With this poster I
wanted to give the
feel to the audience
that this is a very old
sophisticated, upper
class poster for
Ripon.
For this poster I wanted
to give the audience a
really good close view
of the Cathedral hoping
this would entice the
audience to want to see
it in person.
The burn marks gives
the audience the feel
that its old which
they can link to the
Cathedral because
that is also old.
23. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I really liked the American style postcard, I like
how you have made it look old with the colours
and the editing.
– What I like about the video is the facts at the
bottom of the screen it adds more to look at so it
doesn’t get repetitive.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• The posters look similar, you could of used
different layouts.
24. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like how the video goes with the music to the beat, it
helps it flow better.
– I liked how you replicated the colours on the flag into the
words on the poster.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
• On the browner poster I don think the image really fits
colour wise, so I think you should of altered the image
so the colours work better together.
25. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the American looking postcard because of the
images in the letters, it looks cool and adds a lot more
to look at to the postcard
– I liked the use of the fade in and out of the text in the
video, it makes it look more professional
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I think you should of used different photos of the
different things you used in your video on the
posters.
26. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• I agree that my American style postcard is my best print product, I liked
how I made it look old and from the era as well as the pictures in the
letters does add a lot to the piece.
• The video cuts to the beat which makes it flow really well.
• I also agree with the fact that I added a fade to the text which does make
it look more professional.
• I also think the addition of facts and information to the video adds a lot to
the final product.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I disagree with the statement of adding different images to the posters, I
think the Ripon Cathedral is a good thing to have on a poster because
most people are going to see it due to it being in the town.
27. Peer Feedback Summary
– I would of definitely changed my posters so they
don’t look so similar, I would of explored more
layouts and designs.
– I think I should have spent more time on the
posters. For example the one where the image
doesn’t really looks like it fits in with the rest of
the poster I would go back and edit the colours of
it so it does fit in better.
