Fanzine Characters and Styles
• A fanzine (fan magazine) is an independent publication anyone can
make about a specific topic, person, event etc. It includes lots of
images, photos, information, facts, interviews. Over time, more
people were making fanzines and topics including sports, games,
music etc. They came around before computer software's like
photoshop, microsoft word so they were written on typewriters
with images with it and then moved over to being created
digitally.
Existing Products – Front Cover
The title is in a large white font that sticks out from the background,
the background is the base of the front cover, which is important to have
a good colour for it to make it stand out because it will appeal to the
reader more. There is also more text "The rise of lo-fi culture" to explain
more about what the fanzine is about. The image / drawing on the front
is a vinyl, to match the topic of lo-fi music, the drawing could be by the
author, which fits into the theme of it being a fan magazine. This whole
front cover looks handmade and drawn on like what fanzines were
traditionally like before computer software's. The colour scheme of pink,
white, yellow which are all calm colours which perfectly matches the
'lofi' theme because this type of instrumental music is made to be
relaxing and calming. Even the vinyl has pink shades on it to make it less
bold and more fitting with the background. I will use this research in
my main project to make sure I use colours that fit the theme, and I
could make it traditional by drawing on the items on the front cover.
Existing Products – Front Cover
This fanzine front cover is different to the last one I researched.
The image of someone on the front is in black and white, which
is very contrasting to the coloured background and text. The
yellow text with a black background, and then the black text
with a yellow background is an opposition that works well and
they're simple changes that make it more visually appealing. The
yellow circle on the left side looks like a sticker which makes it
look more traditional. The colour scheme is green, yellow, white
and black, the black text on the right side is used for the
headlines such as 'sound system special' which has the yellow text
with a list under it, so it doesn’t look that repetitive. I will use
this when I am doing my own front cover by using different
colours to do text to make it look better.
Existing Products – Front Cover
This existing product is a front cover with several black and white
images with a red background to match the colour of the title. The
masthead is very bold with a tall, thin font. Having 'mod' as white
and 'zines' as red on a black banner background makes it look more
visually appealing and eye-catching. The main colour schemes are
black, white and red, and the connotations of red link to make it look
dangerous, with what looks like posters in the background with red
over it to show it could be a serious topic. The black and white
images suggest this could be about an older topic. The white text on
the left side is clear and explains further what the topic is and how it
is a fanzine, so it isn't official or professionally published. When
making my own fanzine, I will consider this usage of using the colour
scheme to connote what it could be about and having the title on a
black banner is definitely eye catching.
Existing Products – Front & Back Cover
This fanzine example shows a back cover and front cover that
contrast each other and are very different. It is a travel theme,
so both are promoting different aspects of it, one is the history
of something, and the other has the title with Mexico city on it
with a building which could be a landmark or a building the
audience could recognise. It is also different to the traditional
drawing theme as these aren't handmade. The text on the
Mexico City page fits well with the background is it is just a
darker shade to stand out on it.
Existing Products – Contents Page
This is a contents page for a fanzine, the background colour with the black text
is a different colour scheme to some I've researched but it makes it stand out.
The unique images on the right page link with the use of different fonts to make
it look different and not just plain, which connotes it could be an art fanzine
with those images. The numbers of the pages also match the images on the right
by having different shapes, like circles or squares, this also adds to the visually
appealing effect of it and makes it stand out more because it is unique, also this
is because it is a fanzine and a non-official magazine. This could also link to how
the writing looks like it is using a font that is written on, as it looks like
someone's handwriting. It also has other information and credits on the bottom
of the left page which is interesting to see, because I haven't seen it yet on my
research, I will take this into consideration when making my own contents page
for my fanzine because it is better to have extra detail than just a list of pages,
with the 'editor' role ' designer' and 'contributors'. It has the title of the fanzine
at the top in a heading too, also using a different font to the list of pages, this
research has helped me for my own project because I could do that too because
it makes it look more appealing to my audience.
Existing Products – Contents Page
This contents page is very appealing, it has a purple
background with a white page over it, and the black shadow
effect on the left and bottom of the page makes it look more
traditional like it has been handmade or stuck onto it. The
title of the contents is simple but effective because it looks
handwritten, the subheadings that say 'part one, two and
three' is in purple too just like the background, it makes it
stand out like the background especially on a white page.
The pages are then listed underneath the coloured
subheading which makes it look organised. I will consider this
when I make my fanzine as I am making it digitally, there are
extra details like this to make it look more traditional.
Existing Products – Inside Pages
In this fanzine, one page has an image, and the next page has
text, which makes it a lot more simple and easier for someone
to read, because it isn't an officially published magazine, it is a
fan made one (fanzine). The colour scheme of red and blue is
reocurring throughout these pages, on the images, even the
blue text on the white background and the red and blue stripes
on the right side of every page makes it more visually pleasing
to the reader. The font is also a fairly medium and larger size,
and it is centered in the middle of the page leaving space
around the text at the top, bottom and sides. When I am making
my own fanzine, I will take these points about text and images
into consideration so I can make it more appealing and easier to
read for my audience, by having larger text and images etc.
Existing Products – Inside Pages
This is a double page spread for a fanzine. The
colour scheme of blue and red on a white
background is simple but effective, because all
the images have are blue or red, with the text to
match. This makes it easier and appealing to the
reader to look at, the one red image is in a red
box in the bottom left so it is away from the blue
images, this makes it more organised for a reader
to look at. There is also text next to the images
on the side, and text above it too, this makes it a
different layout to the usual fanzine layout to
make it stand out. When making my own fanzine I
will take this into consideration by making the
text similar colour to the images, and how I
layout the inside pages.
Interview
Interviews (Part 1)
• Q1 – How did you get into football?
• Through the family, my family likes it, my brother and my dad and I like it too
• Q2 – Does you or any friends / family support any Premier League teams?
• We support York City because we're from York
• Q3 – Who do you think could win the Premier League this season?
• Top 3 battle between Liverpool, Chelsea or Man U, Chelsea look consistent so probably
them and they've won the Champions League recently too
• Q4 – Who do you think would be at the bottom of the league and get relegated this
season?
• Too early to tell but definitely Norwich
• Q5 – Do you play any football related games, like FIFA?
• Yes I play FIFA, Pes and other games like football manager
Interviews (Part 2)
• Q7 – How do you think your team is doing this season?
• They've had a few wins and losses, they're quite low down now, it goes from League 2 to League 1,
then conference north and south, but York are obviously in north
• Q8 – Who is your favourite player from your favourite team?
• In the Premier League, I'd say Adama Traore, he's very good and I like watching him play
• Q9 – What do you think of Ronaldo coming to the Premier League and do you think it will benefit the
overall audience?
• I think they bought him for something like 30 million, and on the first day they sold more shirts and made back
a lot of money from that, so definitely yes
• Q10 – Do you think Ronaldo will have a big impact on Man United?
• Yes because they might have a chance of winning, but the manager isn't good though
• Q11 – Do you know of any Championship teams that could be promoted to the Premier League next year?
• Teams who have been relegated recently, like West Brom, Fulham, Nottingham Forest. Anyone could go up; they
could be like a yoyo team and go up and down a lot. It is more of a fun league to watch
Interview Reflections
• What did I enjoy?
• I enjoyed doing this interview because it was informative to learn about the topic and it gave me experience for interviews.
• 3 things that went well
• The questions were good and researched well, I used google to do some research on the topic I was interviewing about (Premier League football) and the
topic I was being interviewed about was action films. The questions were also answered well, we answered them all with our answers and developed on
them too. Another thing that went well was the communication, we developed on each other's answers and suggested things with our questions.
• 3 things that didn't work well
• The timing didn't go very well with these interviews, we answered every question and sometimes had little tangents, but the interviews were 4 – 5
minutes each. At first it was harder to think hard and develop my answers while it was being recorded but as the interviews went on, we got used to it.
Another thing that didn’t go very well was trying to send the audio for the interview, and then upload it onto PowerPoint, which is why I wrote it up and
displayed it in a written way, this could have been a connection issue or a problem with the audio recording app we used.
• 3 points I've learned from this and can apply to my project
• I've learned to display my interview in a written way next time for my factual project because I am doing a fanzine, so I'll write it down inside on one of
the pages. I have also learned to take my time with answers and develop on them, instead of doing it quickly or fast, and come up with questions that
have depth, like asking why.
• What was it like being interviewed? How has this informed your process for when you interview someone else?
• It was good and informed me on the process of interviewing someone else, how to explain the question and how to answer them better
Audience Research
• My age demographic primary target audience is teenagers (age
16 – 24). My age demographic secondary target audience is
younger adults (age 12 – 15) , I will appeal to this audience range
by making my product visually effective by having bright colours,
large fonts and titles etc.. My gender demographic target
audience is anyone, it is aimed at all genders because anyone can
enjoy it.
Survey Results
My first question is asking my audience if they've read a fanzine before, 3/8 said yes however 5/8 people
said no, this means that a minority of the target audience that did this survey reads fanzines, so it is a
specific group of my target audience that I am aiming this at.
Survey Results
I asked my audience what makes a good front
cover, and my responses were very helpful, the
main answers were eye catching, organised,
colours, images and titles. I will take this into
consideration when making my own fanzine
front cover and include these points. My target
audience who answered this is aged 16 – 24
which is my primary age demographic I'm
aiming my work at, so these answers are very
useful.
Survey Results
This question is asking what my audience
would rather look at inside the fanzine,
and 75% voted for a bit of both images and
writing, 25% voted for lots of images and
nobody voted for lots of writing. This helps
me a lot because a bit of both is what a lot
of fanzines in my existing products
research included, as nobody voted for lots
of writing, I won't have full blocks of text
as it isn't an official magazine, and the
audience may not find it appealing.
Survey Results
This question is about the contents within the
fanzine, 3/8 people said they would want to read
about facts and information, 3/8 also said they
would want to read about the charts and the other
25% said they want to read about statistics. Nobody
voted for recommendations which means I won't
really include it in my fanzine, mainly because if
somebody was reading the fanzine, they would like
to see facts on the specific topic.
Survey Results
As I am planning to do a music related
fanzine, I asked my target audience what
their favourite genre is so it can appeal to
them the most, and the most popular
answer was hip hop, a few others like r&b
or pop music too. I will write about these
genres in my fanzine

The numbers of the pages also match the images on the right by having different shapes, like circles or squares, this also adds to the visually appealing effect of it and makes it stand out more because it is unique, also this is because it is a fanzine and a non-official magazine. This could also link to how the writing looks like it is using a font that is written on, as it looks like someone's handwriting. It also has other information and credits on the bottom of the left page which is interesting to see, because I haven't seen it yet on my research, I will take this into consideration when making my own contents page for my fanzine because it is better to have extra detail than just a list of pages, with the 'editor' role ' designer' and 'contributors'. It has the title of the fanzine at the top in a heading too, also using a different font to the list of pages, this research has helped me for my own project because I could do that too because it makes it look more appealing to my audience.
  • 13. Existing Products – Contents Page This contents page is very appealing, it has a purple background with a white page over it, and the black shadow effect on the left and bottom of the page makes it look more traditional like it has been handmade or stuck onto it. The title of the contents is simple but effective because it looks handwritten, the subheadings that say 'part one, two and three' is in purple too just like the background, it makes it stand out like the background especially on a white page. The pages are then listed underneath the coloured subheading which makes it look organised. I will consider this when I make my fanzine as I am making it digitally, there are extra details like this to make it look more traditional.
  • 14. Existing Products – Inside Pages In this fanzine, one page has an image, and the next page has text, which makes it a lot more simple and easier for someone to read, because it isn't an officially published magazine, it is a fan made one (fanzine). The colour scheme of red and blue is reocurring throughout these pages, on the images, even the blue text on the white background and the red and blue stripes on the right side of every page makes it more visually pleasing to the reader. The font is also a fairly medium and larger size, and it is centered in the middle of the page leaving space around the text at the top, bottom and sides. When I am making my own fanzine, I will take these points about text and images into consideration so I can make it more appealing and easier to read for my audience, by having larger text and images etc.
  • 15. Existing Products – Inside Pages This is a double page spread for a fanzine. The colour scheme of blue and red on a white background is simple but effective, because all the images have are blue or red, with the text to match. This makes it easier and appealing to the reader to look at, the one red image is in a red box in the bottom left so it is away from the blue images, this makes it more organised for a reader to look at. There is also text next to the images on the side, and text above it too, this makes it a different layout to the usual fanzine layout to make it stand out. When making my own fanzine I will take this into consideration by making the text similar colour to the images, and how I layout the inside pages.
  • 17. Interviews (Part 1) • Q1 – How did you get into football? • Through the family, my family likes it, my brother and my dad and I like it too • Q2 – Does you or any friends / family support any Premier League teams? • We support York City because we're from York • Q3 – Who do you think could win the Premier League this season? • Top 3 battle between Liverpool, Chelsea or Man U, Chelsea look consistent so probably them and they've won the Champions League recently too • Q4 – Who do you think would be at the bottom of the league and get relegated this season? • Too early to tell but definitely Norwich • Q5 – Do you play any football related games, like FIFA? • Yes I play FIFA, Pes and other games like football manager
  • 18. Interviews (Part 2) • Q7 – How do you think your team is doing this season? • They've had a few wins and losses, they're quite low down now, it goes from League 2 to League 1, then conference north and south, but York are obviously in north • Q8 – Who is your favourite player from your favourite team? • In the Premier League, I'd say Adama Traore, he's very good and I like watching him play • Q9 – What do you think of Ronaldo coming to the Premier League and do you think it will benefit the overall audience? • I think they bought him for something like 30 million, and on the first day they sold more shirts and made back a lot of money from that, so definitely yes • Q10 – Do you think Ronaldo will have a big impact on Man United? • Yes because they might have a chance of winning, but the manager isn't good though • Q11 – Do you know of any Championship teams that could be promoted to the Premier League next year? • Teams who have been relegated recently, like West Brom, Fulham, Nottingham Forest. Anyone could go up; they could be like a yoyo team and go up and down a lot. It is more of a fun league to watch
  • 19. Interview Reflections • What did I enjoy? • I enjoyed doing this interview because it was informative to learn about the topic and it gave me experience for interviews. • 3 things that went well • The questions were good and researched well, I used google to do some research on the topic I was interviewing about (Premier League football) and the topic I was being interviewed about was action films. The questions were also answered well, we answered them all with our answers and developed on them too. Another thing that went well was the communication, we developed on each other's answers and suggested things with our questions. • 3 things that didn't work well • The timing didn't go very well with these interviews, we answered every question and sometimes had little tangents, but the interviews were 4 – 5 minutes each. At first it was harder to think hard and develop my answers while it was being recorded but as the interviews went on, we got used to it. Another thing that didn’t go very well was trying to send the audio for the interview, and then upload it onto PowerPoint, which is why I wrote it up and displayed it in a written way, this could have been a connection issue or a problem with the audio recording app we used. • 3 points I've learned from this and can apply to my project • I've learned to display my interview in a written way next time for my factual project because I am doing a fanzine, so I'll write it down inside on one of the pages. I have also learned to take my time with answers and develop on them, instead of doing it quickly or fast, and come up with questions that have depth, like asking why. • What was it like being interviewed? How has this informed your process for when you interview someone else? • It was good and informed me on the process of interviewing someone else, how to explain the question and how to answer them better
  • 20. Audience Research • My age demographic primary target audience is teenagers (age 16 – 24). My age demographic secondary target audience is younger adults (age 12 – 15) , I will appeal to this audience range by making my product visually effective by having bright colours, large fonts and titles etc.. My gender demographic target audience is anyone, it is aimed at all genders because anyone can enjoy it.
  • 21. Survey Results My first question is asking my audience if they've read a fanzine before, 3/8 said yes however 5/8 people said no, this means that a minority of the target audience that did this survey reads fanzines, so it is a specific group of my target audience that I am aiming this at.
  • 22. Survey Results I asked my audience what makes a good front cover, and my responses were very helpful, the main answers were eye catching, organised, colours, images and titles. I will take this into consideration when making my own fanzine front cover and include these points. My target audience who answered this is aged 16 – 24 which is my primary age demographic I'm aiming my work at, so these answers are very useful.
  • 23. Survey Results This question is asking what my audience would rather look at inside the fanzine, and 75% voted for a bit of both images and writing, 25% voted for lots of images and nobody voted for lots of writing. This helps me a lot because a bit of both is what a lot of fanzines in my existing products research included, as nobody voted for lots of writing, I won't have full blocks of text as it isn't an official magazine, and the audience may not find it appealing.
  • 24. Survey Results This question is about the contents within the fanzine, 3/8 people said they would want to read about facts and information, 3/8 also said they would want to read about the charts and the other 25% said they want to read about statistics. Nobody voted for recommendations which means I won't really include it in my fanzine, mainly because if somebody was reading the fanzine, they would like to see facts on the specific topic.
  • 25. Survey Results As I am planning to do a music related fanzine, I asked my target audience what their favourite genre is so it can appeal to them the most, and the most popular answer was hip hop, a few others like r&b or pop music too. I will write about these genres in my fanzine
