nation’s brilliance and ability to thrive is largely dependent upon
Aits people’s edification. Without being open-minded and allowing
oneself to be taught, a person can become stagnant, ignorant, and
frozen in time. Well, a brief and comprehensive look on several
civilizations throughout history would reveal the importance of education
as it applies to society including its economic growth.
It is rightly said that, “Knowledge is Power”. This quote has many flexible
shades of application and holds good in several frameworks. Knowledge
and Education has enabled us to make all the progressions in the science
and technology spheres that we have been able to achieve today. It has
motivated us to be far more capable, superior and sophisticated beings.
Always remember, Knowledge will give you power, but education will
shape your character and character will earn you Respect.
While the education during the initial years of schooling are general, some
special streams of courses are pursued by children as they grow up so that
they attain proficiency and skill in the field in which they want to excel
and build their career. Higher education, theoretically, will also enable
individuals to expand their knowledge and skills, express their thoughts
clearly in speech and in writing, grasp abstract concepts and theories, and
increase their understanding of the world and their community. Pursuing
higher education improves an individual’s quality of life.
Citizens tend to recognize the value of education, especially during times
of economic turmoil, which create an environment rampant with job
uncertainty. When considered as the search for enlightenment, education
could be considered as a journey, or a pilgrimage. If done properly, this
pursuit implicates the veracity of the whole person -- human relationships
and humanity, career choices, and chief decisions throughout one’s life.
Enlightenment truly involves “education” -- a leading out, a moving away
from. But if we, as individuals, organizations and society, are to move
forward, anticipating and answering the challenges of tomorrow is
imperative. We need to look to the future not just to prepare for it, but to
give it a concrete shape with the help of our education.
Innovation is great in every aspect, but how do we innovate thoughtfully?
What’s the right balance between speed and careful study? The answers
don’t exist in any single space. We’ll only realize the full, inclusive
potential of tomorrow by hurdling across old boundaries that divide
disciplines, institutions and nations. We’ll evolve and improve ourselves to
fit better into the real economic world only with enlightenment through
methodical education with the help of competent educational institutions.

10. he higher education system of the United States of America provides an incomparable level of
Tflexibility through a number of diverse institutions that the States encompasses. It is indeed the most
attractive feature of the U.S. higher education system for scholars hailing to refine their skills from
all over the world.
This diversity offers students with varied options to specialize in their choice of academic disciplines and
even gain employment training through their career center. More than 4,500 accredited institutions help to
leverage the higher education framework in the United States. The institutions are accredited on a national
or regional level by independent accrediting bodies, unlike many countries which are organized and managed
by a central body.
Some of the various institutions that offer higher-education degrees include liberal arts institutions, private
colleges and universities, community colleges, colleges for biblical studies, law colleges etc. For example,
liberal art institutions offer major/minor degree courses in the arts, humanities, languages, and social and
physical sciences. The majority of liberal arts institutions are private. Private colleges and universities are
funded by a combination of endowments, research grants, gifts from alumni, and tuition fees. Community
colleges are another option that provides students with two-year associate degree programs for them to
continue studies for an undergraduate degree along with helping them gain occupational skills for immediate
employment.
The United States is privileged to have some glorious multiversities basking on its terrain, which provide a
plethora of courses under one roof. Public Universities, founded and subsidized by the U.S. state
governments, are state colleges and universities that provide a low-cost education to residents of that state.
Public universities generally offer access to research opportunities and curriculums in a wide variety of fields
of study.
The U.S. academic calendar typically runs from September to May and can be divided into two academic
terms of 16-18 weeks known as semesters. Alternatively, some of the schools operate on a quarter or
trimester system of multiple terms, each with period of 10-12 weeks.
After a brief exploration in the chaotic pedagogy of the United States, The Knowledge Review takes the
pleasure to guide you towards erudition with its issue on “The 50 Admirable educational institutions 2017.”
With the variety of available competent educational institutions, students are sure to find the right fit for their
academic, financial, and personal needs. So flip through the folios and don’t miss out on the scholarly articles
from the editorial desk.

28. Increasing
the Retention Rate to Increase the
Graduation Rate
he first query that comes to mind of any aspiring freshman is the graduation rate of the
Tcollege. It has been presumed that the reason for the low graduation rate has been due to poor
service experience and treatment that has been meted out by the college onto the students.
The low graduation rate has also been linked to the non-delivery of good quality education and
scheduling conflicts due to which students are not able to find the right course. Today, maintaining a
proper retention rate has become a prime concern for most major schools with students having many
choices to opt for graduation in the country.
As per the National Center for Education Statistics, 60% of first-time, full-time students have
completed their graduation in the allotted 6 years. To be more specific, it was 58% at public
institutions, 65% at private non-profit institutions, and 27% at private for-profit institutions.
The variations in the graduation rates were also observed according to the institutions’ selectivity
level. It was observed that the institutes that had the lowest admission acceptance rate had the highest
graduation rate. Those with an open admission policy had the lowest graduation rate.
The Role of the Campus
As per a recent study, certain non-academic aspects of campus can play a very influential role in
a student’s life. Through participation in campus recreation programs, students have received health
and social benefits. As per Astin's (1984) theory, participation in extracurricular activities contributes
to the success of students. The student learning process has been observed to have increased
considerably with increased involvement of students in the extracurricular activities, and both campus
recreation activities and intramural sports have played an equal role in providing students with equal
opportunities for getting involved in the university. In a separate study from Astin (1993), it has also
been observed that student's overall satisfaction with the college has been related to their participation
in intramural sports.

29. It has been observed that being an active member of the college community is directly linked to the
student’s retention rate. The interactions that take place outside the formal academic areas of the
college have a far better influential effect on the students to make them devote additional efforts to
their learning activities. With high levels of integration in the social system of the college, the
students would refrain from any doubts in their minds regarding pursuing their education.
Due to such campus recreation activities, students have reported to have gained various benefits such
as, feelings of well-being, stress reduction, respect for others, friendships and self-confidence.
Sense of Belonging from the Faculty
A grim state of event is that, on an average, a college loses around $9 million in revenue due to
student attrition. Many of the universities have not been able to graduate more than 50% of incoming
freshmen. Many of the colleges have allotted a definite fund for association with external peripheries
to monitor student attrition and to increase the graduation rates. These institutes have showcased their
successful portfolios in the successive years. So, it is no surprise that many of the Ivy League colleges
are investing heavily in the entire academic activity in a way that aids the faculties in the entire
teaching process. This has actually provided the staff members with more time to engage with the
students in their curriculum. The faculties get all the opportunities to be the quintessential
representative of the university and a role model to their students.
With the stress of the academics off their heads, and with students responding positively to the
academic curriculum, the staff members are the most eligible ones to create a positive impact on the
student’s decision to pursue his/her studies. Colleges are conducting faculty training programs so that
the faculty could encourage students and build their self-esteem by helping them in their needs,
motivating them for the life after their studies and by actively showing their trust in the students’
performance. In the same context, colleges are also improving the working environment of the
faculties, so that they could transcend the same positive vibe to their students.
The Point of Synergy
In contradiction to a popular perception, Campus Recreation Programs actually improve the market
value of the College in this competitive education sector. To increase the likelihood of students’
approach towards Campus Recreation Facilities and Programs, the authorities of the college are
entrusted with the crucial assignment of providing with all the facilities such as proper scheduling of
the academic curriculum, proper infrastructure to conduct such activities and last but not the least,
a motivation factor from the faculties.
With more involvement in such activities comes more dedication devotion of students towards the
college and its academics and this in return helps them to allot their additional focus towards studies
also. With an interactive and liberal social system, students will have a sense of belonging and
eventually it results in an expanded alumni network that contributes back to the university by
recommending it to other students.

Dr. Germaine Washington, M.B.A., D.M., is the Department Chair of

Professor of Business at Calvary University. Dr. Washington’s passion
for teaching developed over an 18-year period of counseling children,
adolescents, adults and families that were struggling with addictions

While helping her clients build proper self-esteem and life skills she
realized that teaching was an integral part of every counseling
situation, and the need to inspire and be inspired was necessary for
success in life. This realization, coupled with her experience as a
clinical director, was the reason for her transition into the current role
of preparing others to teach and inspire. In the classroom, she's often
presenting scenarios where students learn to develop their own
solutions to problems. She wants the student’s perspective, but is
always challenging them to, “Back it up with the (text) book!” She
teaches her students to anchor everything in objective truth rather than
personal opinion.
Dr. Washington's frequent reminder is, “Whatever stage of life you're

40. Role of Universities in
Teaching the Skills Needed
to Sustain in a
Knowledge-Based Economy
f all until now, universities have provided the society with a safe way to gamble with the future, by encouraging
Oinnovative research and development that may not have apparent short-term benefits, without incurring major social or
commercial loss. Another most important lesson we learn at college is the ability to challenge the assumptions and
positions of powerful agencies outside the university. There is a risk in tying university and college programs too closely to
immediate labor market needs. The demands in the Labor Market can shift haphazardly, and specifically, in a knowledge-
based society, it is impossible to judge what kinds of businesses or trades will emerge in the future.
Nevertheless, the rapid development in higher education and the very large sums invested in learning is largely driven by
government, employers and parents wanting a work-force that is competitive, employable and preferably affluent. Indeed, the
universities have always been persuasive about this one role, which started as preparation and training for the church, then the
law and much later, the government administration.
Physiognomies of some knowledge-based workers
For a knowledge-based economy to run efficaciously and effortlessly, it would require people who are focused and motivated
towards contributing numbers in the expansion of the knowledge-based economy. Such knowledge-based workers are
determined and have distinguished characteristics,
•They usually work in small companies, mostly startups.
•They often work on contractual basis, or as part-time workers, so they move around from one job to another fairly
frequently.
•They sometimes are entrepreneurs and are their own bosses; sometimes they have created their own job, which didn't exist
until they worked out that there was a need and they could strive to meet that need.
•They are adaptable to the digital advancements and are competent digitally; digital technology is a key component of their
work contributing to the business.
•There are constant changes in the nature of their work, typically based on response to market and technological
developments and thus the knowledge base of their work is likely to change rapidly.
•They play many roles because they often work for themselves or in small companies. So their role is diversely covering
various verticals of marketing, designing, accounting, sales, managerial responsibilities, technical support, etc.
•They depend on social media platforms to bring-in business and to keep their knowledge up to date with current trends in
their area of work
•They need to be quick learners to stay on top in their business-space, and they need to manage that learning for themselves.
•Above all, they need to be flexible, to adapt to rapidly changing conditions around them.
Embedding skills in the curriculum
Most faculties in universities are well trained in content and have a deep understanding of their subject areas. Expertise in
development of skills though, is another matter. It is not that faculty does not help students develop skills – they do – but
whether these intellectual skills match the needs of knowledge-based workers, and whether enough emphasis is given to
development of skills within the curriculum.

41. Some of the important skills that hold an important role in an individual's overall development are communications skills, the
ability to learn independently, ethics and responsibility, teamwork and flexibility, thinking skills, digital skills and knowledge
management.
Universities can take that into consideration and look for ways to entrench these skills into curriculum.
•Development of skills is relatively context-specific. Furthermore, these skills need to be rooted within relatively particular
knowledge domain. For example, problem solving in business is different from problem-solving in medicine. Different
processes and approaches are used to solve problems in these domains (for instance, business tends to be more intuitive,
medicine more deductive; business would probably accept a solution that will contain a higher element of risk or uncertainty,
while medicine is more risk averse);
•Skills are often best learned in moderately small steps, with steps increasing gradually as mastery is approached;
•Learners need a lot of practice to reach mastery and consistency in a particular skill;
•Learners need feedback on a regular basis to learn skills quickly and effectively; immediate feedback is usually better than
late feedback;
•Although skills can be learned by trial and error without the intervention of any of the lateral mentors like a teacher, coach,
or technology, development of those skills can be greatly enhanced with appropriate interventions.
The increasing competitiveness has raised a question on employability for graduates in the knowledge-based economy. And
the question is; Are universities teaching the skills needed in a Knowledge-Based Economy? T R

Financial Aids and Scholarships:
Last fall, College of Saint Mary took a stand against the
rising cost of college tuition by announcing an
undergraduate tuition reduction of 33% ($10,000 reduction
per year). The pure motivation behind CSM’s initiative was
to follow its institutional mission of providing access to a
college education for more women.
Current students will save nearly $2,000 in out-of-pocket
costs per year and incoming students will save thousands
(depending on their academic/athletic performance and
need).
76% of undergraduate students received federal loans to
help pay for college. At some schools where few students
borrow federal loans, the typical undergraduate may leave
school with $0 in debt. More than 95% of students receive

“CCAD fosters a community that educates diverse students so they can unleash their creative power to
shape culture and commerce.”
CCAD will be recognized as a top-tier college of art and design, a cultural leader, and the engine of
Columbus' creative economy. CCAD will have a global reputation for delivering an innovative and
relevant creative educational experience of value to its students, alumni, and society.
Mark of Honor
In 2001, CCAD made a mark on the city skyline with their giant ART
sculpture. The piece is 100 feet tall, 101 feet wide and weighs 24,000
pounds. (It also has zero bad angles when it comes to taking selfies.)
The sculpture came to be after Ric Petry, now Director of Graduate
Studies, joked that CCAD should build a giant ART sign inspired by
1950s diners. Then President Denny Griffith liked the idea. So they
got a giant ART sign that serves, as Denny said, “as a beacon for the
arts in Columbus and beyond.”

and theories of gender and sexuality, and her graduate art
history works are focused on the visual crisis surrounding
the AIDS epidemic. She received her BA in Art History
from Stanford University, her MA in Art History from
University of California Santa Barbara where she also
completed doctoral coursework and exams, and her EdD

realworld projects with companies and organizations while in
school, giving them the opportunity to learn and lead design
processes, and providing partners the kind of unique and
innovative thinking they can only get from CCAD.
Students have the opportunity to work closely with
professionals in their fields, and can compete against peers
and professionals in events such as the FirstBuild Hackathon

employers at internship and job fairs, through one-on-one
career advising, job readiness workshops, help with resumes,
and much more. The twice-annual juried Art Fair provides
students and alumni the opportunity to sell their work to a
crowd of eager art buyers.
CCAD's Student Government Association and the Student
Involvement and Orientation Office provide for fun and
learning outside of the classroom as well as programming
such as bringing comedians to campus, holding talent shows,
and facilitating cultural, academic, religious, social, and
recreational opportunities.

overwhelming — it’s a major investment. CCAD encourages
an individual’s investment in his/her work and passion and
envisions revolutionary changes those contributions will
bring to the art and design world. They offer two types of
institutional scholarships: academic scholarships and merit
scholarships. These are based on academic qualifications such
as grades and test scores, on your major and on the talent
