Population Education- Meaning and Definition.
 According to UNESCO, “Population Education is an educational
programme which provides for a study of population situation of the family, the
community, nation and world, with the purpose of developing in the students
rational and responsible attitudes and behaviour towards that situation.”
 Burbson: “Population education is an exploration of knowledge and
attitude about population, the family and sex. It includes population
awareness, family living, reproduction education and basic values.”
 Gopal Population:“Population education may be defined as an
educational programme which provides for a study of the population
phenomenon so as to enable the students to take rational decisions towards
problems arising out of rapid population growth.”
TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
OBJECTIVES OF POPULATION EDUCATION.
The objectives of Population Education are:
1. To enable the students to understand that family size is controlled.
2. That population limitation can facilitate the development of a higher quality of life in the
nation.
3. That a small family size can contribute materially to the quality of living for the
individual family.
4. To enable the students to appreciate the fact that for preserving the health and welfare of
the members of the family and to ensure good prospects for the younger generation, the
Indian families of today and tomorrow should be small and compact.
5. To give accurate information to the students about the effect of changes in family size
and in national population on the individual.
TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
AIMS OR STRATEGIES OF POPULATIon EDUCATION.
The aims of population education are as follows:
(i) Population education aims at assisting the individual to understand the causes and
consequences of population phenomena.
(ii) It enables the individual to understand how docs population situation affect the
individual and society.
(iii) It aims at recognizing the causes of demographic phenomena and to enable the
people to make changes in order to remove those obstacles for social progress.
(iv) It enables to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to
understand the concept of population education.
(v) It enables the learner to take a conscious and right decision about the prevailing
population situations
TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
NEED OR IMPORTANCE OF POPULATION EDUCATION.
Population explosion affects every aspect of man’s life-individual, national and
international. It affects health, wealth and happiness of individual and
families.
It also affects the prosperity and progress of nations, international security and
peace. In order to minimize the problems like food problem, economic
problem, younger generation problem, environmental problem and
educational problem, there is an urgent need of population education at all
levels.
TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
NEED OR IMPORTANCE OF POPULATION EDUCATION.
Hence, population education needs to be given top priority in the present
scenario. The younger generation needs to be informed about India’s
populations problems. They need to be properly educated with new ideas for
leading a better adult life.
The present situation needs population education because it is a new content
area and is highly relevant to the lives of the people. It also encourages
improvements in methods of teaching, in the structure of the system of
education, in the value of the students and the teachers and in so many other
areas.

PROBLEMS IN POPULATION EDUCATION
1. Confusion of the Concepts:
The concepts of population education does not have a satisfactory definition for which
it becomes very difficult on the part of the teachers, teacher educators and the
educationists to have a clear cut idea about its aims, curriculum, methods of teaching,
when to teach etc.
2. Lack of Variety of Languages:
Language plays a vital role for propagating the new ideas among the people. As India
is a multi-lingual country having 15 official languages and 1652 dialects, it is very
difficult to propagate and implement and new programme through different
languages.
TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
PROBLEMS IN POPULATION EDUCATION.
3. Inadequate Curriculum:
Though population education is a new concept, we have not so far developed suitable
curriculum and teaching materials for implementation of this programme in different
levels of education.
4. Lack of Proper Planning:
As population education is comparatively a new area in the field of education it needs
proper planning and co-ordination at each level. But lack of proper planning and co-
ordination this programme is too difficult to implement.
5. Lack of Communication:
The slow progress of population education in India is lack of transport and
communication facilities as the large portion of our country is covered with hills and
rivers.
TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS,
MADURAI.
PROBLEMS IN POPULATION EDUCATION.
6. Social and Religious Taboos:
Our traditional society and religion are responsible for the slow progress of population education for
which many people do not appreciate the population education programme.
7. Lack of Trained Teachers:
To impart instructions on population education some advanced knowledge, skill and training is
required for the teachers. It is very difficult on the part of untrained teachers to impart instructions on
population education.
8. Lack of Resources:
We lack both human and material resources for implementing the new programme of population
education.
9. Lack of Research:
Population education needs adequate research work for its progress what we lack in India

CONCLUSION:-
The Govt, of India last year appointed an expert group on National
Population Policy under the chairmanship of Dr. M.S Swaminathan which
submitted its report on 22nd may 1994. The report recommended for
complete elimination of marriage of girls below the age of 18, universal
immunisation of children etc. which must be achieved by 2010 A.D. So the
population policy should touch the life of common man and should have a
wider involvement of the people, the politicians, the bureaucrats, the media,
the specialists, the teachers and the public at large.
TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
CONCLUSION:-
One of the formidable problems which stare us in the faces, is our rapid
increasing population, which offsets every endeavour for development. A
need is being felt for imparting factual knowledge about population dynamic,
so that the younger generation may understand the nature and magnitude of
the burden imposed by rapid population growth.
Our population is increasing annually at a rapid rate of 2.5 percent India is
next to China, has little less then three times the population of U.S.A., twenty-
one times the population of Canada and more than six times the population
of Japan. With the present growth rate the country’s population may reach
the incredible figure of one-billion before the end of this century.

  • 8. PROBLEMS IN POPULATION EDUCATION 1. Confusion of the Concepts: The concepts of population education does not have a satisfactory definition for which it becomes very difficult on the part of the teachers, teacher educators and the educationists to have a clear cut idea about its aims, curriculum, methods of teaching, when to teach etc. 2. Lack of Variety of Languages: Language plays a vital role for propagating the new ideas among the people. As India is a multi-lingual country having 15 official languages and 1652 dialects, it is very difficult to propagate and implement and new programme through different languages. Lack of Proper Planning: As population education is comparatively a new area in the field of education it needs proper planning and co-ordination at each level. But lack of proper planning and co- ordination this programme is too difficult to implement. 5. Lack of Communication: The slow progress of population education in India is lack of transport and communication facilities as the large portion of our country is covered with hills and rivers. • 13. CONCLUSION:- The Govt, of India last year appointed an expert group on National Population Policy under the chairmanship of Dr. M.S Swaminathan which submitted its report on 22nd may 1994. The report recommended for complete elimination of marriage of girls below the age of 18, universal immunisation of children etc. which must be achieved by 2010 A.D. So the population policy should touch the life of common man and should have a wider involvement of the people, the politicians, the bureaucrats, the media, the specialists, the teachers and the public at large. • 14. CONCLUSION:- One of the formidable problems which stare us in the faces, is our rapid increasing population, which offsets every endeavour for development. A need is being felt for imparting factual knowledge about population dynamic, so that the younger generation may understand the nature and magnitude of the burden imposed by rapid population growth. Our population is increasing annually at a rapid rate of 2.5 percent India is next to China, has little less then three times the population of U.S.A., twenty- one times the population of Canada and more than six times the population of Japan. With the present growth rate the country’s population may reach the incredible figure of one-billion before the end of this century. TCP PRESENTO 2020, THIAGARAJAR COLLEGE OF PRECEPTORS, MADURAI.
