 Discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665.
 Discovered by examining a thin slice of cork.
 Cell was derived from the Latin word
‘cellula’ meaning ‘a little room’.
 Robert Hooke
Unicellular Organisms Multicellular Organisms
 Is represented by a
single cell.
 Activities are
performed by a
single cell.
 Life span of an
individual is short.
 Consists of large
number of cells.
 Work is divided
among various
cells
 Life span of an
individual is long.
 Plasma Membrane
 Cell Wall
 Nucleus
 Cytoplasm
 Cell organelles
 Endoplasmic reticulum
 Ribosome
 Golgi Apparatus
 Lysosomes
 Mitochondria
 Plastids
 Vacuoles
 It is the outer covering of the cell.
 It is also called a selective permeable
membrane.
 It permits the entry or exit of some materials
in and out of the cell.
 It is the other rigid covering that can be
found in plant cells.
 It protects the cell from:
 High wind speed
 Temperature variations
 Atmospheric moisture
 Nucleus is the central dense body in the cell.
 It is the control centre of the cell.
 It contains genes, which are functional
segments of the DNA.
 It is the jelly-like substance inside the cell.
 It contains the different cell organelles.
 Cytoplasm, which can also be referred to as
cytosol, means cell substance.
Endoplasmic Reticulum-It supports the
framework of the cell.
Ribosome- It helps in protein synthesis.
Golgi Apparatus- It helps in storage,
modification and packaging of
products.
Lysosomes- This serves as suicide bags
of the cell.
Mitochondria- It serves as the power
house of the cell.
Plastids
 Leucoplasts-helps in storage of food.
 Chromoplasts- provides colour the
organs.
 Chloroplasts- helps in photosynthesis.
Vacuole- It helps in maintaining
osmotic pressure in the cell.
