Q. A four stroke engine develops 80 kW at full load having
mechanical efficiency of 80 %. Find the I.P, and F.P. If the
engine is run at constant speed so that friction losses may
be assumed to be constant , find the mechanical efficiency
at 75 %, 50 % and 25 % of the full load . Draw your
conclusion.
Q.2) a Four stroke diesel engine consumes 20 kg/hr . When
the engine develops an output of 80 KW, calculate the brake
and indicated specific fuel consumption if the mechanical
efficiency of the engine is 80 %. Also determine the brake and
indicated thermal efficiency if the calorific value of the fuel is
45000 kJ/kg.
Q.3) A 4 cylinder , 4 –stroke cycle engine having cylinder
diameter 100mm and stroke 120 mm was tested at 1600 r.p.m.
and following readings were obtained. Fuel consumption = 0.27
liters/ minutes
Specific gravity of fuel =0.74 BP = 31.4 kW, Mechanical
efficiency = 80 %, calorific value of fuel = 44000 kJ /kg.
Determine i) BSFC ii)IMEP iii) Brake thermal efficiency.
Q.4) A two stroke diesel engine develops 400 kW output with a
mechanical efficiency of 0.82 . The rate of fuel consumption is
2.4 kg/min and the air –fuel ratio used in the engine is 18:1. The
heating value of the fuel is 41500 kJ/kg. find i) IP ii)F.P ,iii) brake
thermal efficiency iv) indicated thermal efficiency v) fuel and air
consumption per hour.

Diesel power plant •Why? •Emergency •Stand by •2 to 50 MW •Can be used for small power plant like industries •Advantage: •Quick installed •Quick to start •No worm up period •Can take load quickly •Efficient up to small capacity like 100 MW •Low cooling water required •Less capital cost •Efficient at part load •Less manpower •Can be used different fuels

  • 47. Q. A four stroke engine develops 80 kW at full load having mechanical efficiency of 80 %. Find the I.P, and F.P. If the engine is run at constant speed so that friction losses may be assumed to be constant , find the mechanical efficiency at 75 %, 50 % and 25 % of the full load . Draw your conclusion.

When the engine develops an output of 80 KW, calculate the brake and indicated specific fuel consumption if the mechanical efficiency of the engine is 80 %. Also determine the brake and indicated thermal efficiency if the calorific value of the fuel is 45000 kJ/kg.

Fuel consumption = 0.27 liters/ minutes Specific gravity of fuel =0.74 BP = 31.4 kW, Mechanical efficiency = 80 %, calorific value of fuel = 44000 kJ /kg. Determine i) BSFC ii)IMEP iii) Brake thermal efficiency.
  • 50. Q.4) A two stroke diesel engine develops 400 kW output with a mechanical efficiency of 0.82 . The rate of fuel consumption is 2.4 kg/min and the air –fuel ratio used in the engine is 18:1. The heating value of the fuel is 41500 kJ/kg. find i) IP ii)F.P ,iii) brake thermal efficiency iv) indicated thermal efficiency v) fuel and air consumption per hour.
