2. Question 1
My first question was ‘what is your
gender?’. By knowing this it enables me to
target my trailer to a specific audience.
The set of results show that the majority of
people who answered were female
(72.22%) whereas there were fewer male
(22.22%) and one ‘other’.This suggests
that I need to aim the trailer more towards
females.This could be achieved through
the use of characters by making the female
characters more relatable or by having a
strong female lead.
3. Question 2
The second question asked how old each
participant was; this again enables me to target
the trailer to a more specific age group.
The majority of people who answered were 17
years old (61.11%) whereas only 11.11% were
over 20 years old. This suggests I need to make
the trailer more suitable to teens and young
adults. Again this could be done through
characters by making them a similar age. Or by
making the plot about something that would be
happening in the participants lives, for example,
school/college and work.
4. Question 3
The third question asks ‘how often do you
watch horror films per week?’This will show if
the audience is likely to watch my trailer.
50% of my audience research said they never
watch horror films, however the other 50%
said they do.This shows that my trailer will
appeal to around 50% of the market, and
therefore will be popular amongst some of
the population.
An alternative to this is that I could make the
trailer less of a horror but still have some
conventions. By doing this it could mean it
would appeal to more people.
5. Question 4
‘What genre of horror film do you prefer’ is a very
suitable question for my research as it gives me insight
into which genre the audience is more likely to watch.
Within this question the most popular answer was
psychological (33.3%) and the next was paranormal
(22.22%).The least favourite was monster and gothic
which received no results; this tells me I should not
include this in my trailer as it is not favoured by my
particular audience.
Due to the majority picking psychological horror as their
preferred genre I will make my trailer more like these
types of films.
6. Question 5
I wanted to gain an understanding of what
horror films my audience favoured. I decided
to ask this as it would show me what genre of
film/storylines my audience likes.
All the responses were different with a few
saying they don’t watch horror films. This
reinforces my earlier point about making my
trailer less of horror. However other answers
suggested that paranormal/supernatural and
psychological films were the most popular
amongst the audience; again reinforcing
question 4.
Due to this I will try and target my trailer
more towards one of these genres.
7. Question 6
I asked the question ‘who are you more likely
to watch a horror film with’ because it lets
me know how the film will be received.
The majority of the audience said they are
most likely to watch a film with friends
(66.67%) this suggests that I will need to
make my trailer appeal to a wide group of
people. However, from this I also know not
to make it appeal towards a family unit as it
is less likely to be watched.
Additionally, as the basis of my trailer
revolves around a group of friends this could
make it even more scarier if it is being
watched by friends; therefore making it
more of a success.
8. Question 7
I also asked the question ‘what would persuade you
to watch a horror film’ as this would give me insight
into what features would make the audience more
likely to watch the trailer/ see the film.
The majority said that the quality of the trailer would
persuade them to watch the film (61.11%) this shows
that I will need to make the trailer as effective as
possible as this will influence them to watch the film.
Many people also said that actors would persuade
them to see a film (55.56%), however, I do not have
the budget to include well-known or professional
actors, so instead I will need to make sure that the
acting within the trailer is good and will entice the
audience to watch the film.
The least likely feature was marketing (22.22%)
which suggests this isn't something that I should be
too concerned with but should still keep it in mind.
9. Question 8
To give me an idea of the best way to market and
advertise my film I asked the question ‘would you
prefer to see a film advertised through film
posters/magazines or on social networks?’
The highest response was 61.11% withTV Adverts
(trailers). This reinforces the fact that the trailer will
be the main source for influencing people to watch
the film; therefore it will need to be enticing and
make the viewers want to know more. I can do this
through quick cuts and the use of music to build the
suspense, which in turn will make the audience want
to watch the film.
Social networks were also quite a popular (27.78%)
way the audience would like to see the film
advertised. This could be due to fast growing social
media platforms and the influence of it.
Traditionally, films were advertised through posters
and magazines, however this was the lowest
(11.11%).This could suggest this step is unnecessary
for a younger audience.
10. Question 9
The next question I asked was ‘where would you
prefer to watch a horror film’ this will indicate
where I should aim to advertise the movie for; this
could be cinema, at home or for educational
purposes (school/college).
My results show that the most common place for
people to watch a horror film is in fact at their house
(61.11%); this suggests that I should target my film
release to be on platforms such as streaming
services (Netflix, Amazon) ,TV or DVDs as more
people are likely to watch it.
22.22% said they would go to the cinema and watch
it; so there would still be a chance it could be
released in cinemas, however the opening night
would probably only be featured on a few screens.
The least likely was educational purposes (5.56%)
therefore I will not aim for it to be targeted towards
this group.
11. Question 10
My last question I asked was whether the participants
would want to watch my horror film. I gave them a
brief synopsis of what I think I would like to base my
horror around.
The results showed that the majority of people would
watch this film with only one saying ‘probably not as I
don’t really like scary films’.This however suggests that
this is still a large appetite for horror films, especially
across young adults. Meaning that my film will
probably appeal to many people across around this
age.
From this, I know I can successfully go ahead with my
plot to make a trailer including relevant features to
make it attract the specific audience; which I have been
able to gather from the survey.
