The document summarizes the results of a survey conducted by the author for their A2 media coursework on creating a trailer for a slasher film. The survey was intended to help the author make decisions around attracting an audience. Key results included finding that slasher films appeal to both male and female audiences, with most viewers being between ages 16-23. It also informed decisions around the film's rating, distribution platform, preferred viewing experience (groups over alone), scary weapons/locations to feature, and conventions to include to attract viewers. The survey provided useful guidance for the author's trailer design.
2. In my A2 media course work, I was given
the task to create my own trailer for
a slasher film. In preparation to doing
this, my group and I created a survey
on questionpro.com to find out what
exact decisions I could make in order
for my trailer attract an audience.
The results of my survey did as I
intended and showed me how the use
and twists of conventions enable me
to make my slasher trailer attractive
to a wide audience. The results also
widened my view of who I will aim to
attract also.

What Gender are you?Originally, when writing this
question in my survey, I had
suspected the majority of
people who watch slasher
films were male. Due to my
thinking of this, I had aimed
for my trailer to be in the
form of the male gaze so it
would attract a large male
audience. But now after
realising the majority of the
results in my survey was given
by females, I now know to
make sure my trailer attract
both genders, as I have learnt
that slasher films appeal to
both sex’s.
4. What age group do you
fall under?
10 to 15
16 to 23
24 to 30
31 onwards
I placed this question
within my survey to find
out which age range
would be most attracted
to my film. As the most
common age was
between sixteen to
twenty-three and the
second most common was
between ten to fifteen, it
is clear that I would be
most benefitted if rating
my film a fifteen, as I
would gain a bigger
audience allowing the
ages 15, 16 and 17 to see
my film apposed to only
18 and above.

How do you view Slasher

How do you
view
Slasher
Films?
I decided to enter this
question within my survey
is because this gave me an
advertisement opportunity.
I suspected that Download
would be the most common
way people view films. So
with these results I plan on
advertising my film on
Netflix for everyone to
watch. I would be able to
play this advert on a
magazine front cover which
I also have to make.

How would you prefer to
watch a slasher film?
The reason why I added this
question within my survey is
because I thought I could
advertise a competition on a
film magazine I also have to
make. This question then
gave me the answer if it
should be a group prize or
singular prize. I now know it
should be a group prize
because these results show
that majority of people like
watching slasher films in a
group, so if I were to place a
competition for a singular
prize, not many people
would be attracted to it.
7. Which weapon do you
find most scary in a
slasher film?"
Knife
Michete
Chainsaw
Axe
Garden
Shears
I added this question to my
survey to help me decide
on a very important
decision for my trailer. The
weapon in which the killer
uses. The most scariest
weapon that the
participants say is the
chainsaw, but
unfortunately I do not
think I am able to use a
chainsaw due to being
capable of using one in a
public area. But the second
most scariest choice is an
axe. This is a capable and
usable weapon and will be
the used as the main
weapon in my trailer.
8. Which location do you
find the most scary in a
slasher film"
Woods
School
Empty
multi-story
car park
A house at
night
A Hospital
I added this question to my
survey because I wanted to
know the best location to
shoot my trailer. Originally
my synopsis does set the
location within the woods,
but I added this question to
make sure that this was the
best choice. Now I have
received this information
back I know that setting my
trailer in the woods was a
correct choice, which will
eventually help make my
trailer attract as many
people as it can.
9. I added this question for ways of learning how to attract
as many people as I can. I thought that if I asked this
question I would get some effective ideas which I would
make sure I would use within my trailer. This was
successful as I was given many ideas which I think I will
defiantly use in my trailer. For instance one person said
“you never expect what is going to happen next”. This is
a very effective technique which I defiantly will use.
Another example is “constant tension rising” this is
another effective technique which I believe must occur
within a slasher trailer for it to be effective.
10. "A killer who kills teens"
"Lots of blood"
"Gory deaths"
"Everyone but one girl dies"
"The sexual girl dies first"
"A twists"
"Running in the woods"
"Set night with teenagers having a
party where someone is killed"
"Killer is connected with a teen in
some way"
"The killer being revealed at the end or
unmasked"
By asking what the participants think
will be in a slasher film, I have been
given very useful ideas which I could
then apply to my trailer. One states
that everyone but one girl dies; this is
conventional for slasher films as they
typically use character types from
Propp’s narrative functions, this is a
certain convention I do plan to use in
my film. They also mention that there
is often running in the woods; an
isolated location is again a certain
convention which is used in slasher
films, as they convey a sense of no
escape and anarchy. This is also
another convention I plan to use in my
film, as these sense’s of no escape are
needed in creating a successful
slasher.
