Rational emotive behavioral therapy
Rational emotive behavioral therapy
is a type of psychotherapy along the
same lines as cognitive behavioral
therapy
The therapy is developed by a
psychologist Albert Ellis in '1959'
Albert believe that human do not
merely get upset by unfortunate
adversities but also by how they
construct their views of reality
through language believe meaning
philosophy about world others and
themselves
Goals and purpose of REBT
 To reduce emotional distress and self defeating
behavioral that result in their ability to lead a
happier and more fulfilled life
 REBT therapist help client how they prevent
themselves from being happy by focusing on
their irrational beliefs that lead to emotional
and behavioral disturbance
 It has to encourage client to think more
rationally feel healthier at more efficiently to
achieve basic purpose and goals
REBT is based on a ABC model
Where,
A stands for adversity
B stands for belief
C stands for consequences
REBT
Where R stands for rational or rationality which is
commonly used as adjective in front of norms beliefs,
such belief can also be thought of as attitude in that
they describe a person's position towards something
Where B stands for behaviour which means a
consequence based on rationality and emotion
irrationality and emotional disturbances
Difference between Rational and Irrational
beliefs
 Rational belief is flexible where as irrational beliefs is
rigid
 Rational belief is non extreme where as irrational
beliefs extreme
 Rational beliefs true where is irrational beliefs False
 Rational belief sensible where is irrational believe is
non sensible
 Rational belief is largely constructive where is
irrational belief is largely unconstructive
Benefits and advantages of REBT
 You can learn to responsibility for how you feel react
and behave in response to situation and events
 You can apply what you have learned in REBT in all
areas of your life
 It is cost effective because of its short term nature
 It can be used with individuals group couples and
families
Disadvantages of REBT
 Not suitable for all patient does not always work or
not what they want
 Does not consider environment
 Another disadvantage is that the client need to be
willing to work on their problems

Goals and purpose of REBT  To reduce emotional distress and self defeating behavioral that result in their ability to lead a happier and more fulfilled life  REBT therapist help client how they prevent themselves from being happy by focusing on their irrational beliefs that lead to emotional and behavioral disturbance  It has to encourage client to think more rationally feel healthier at more efficiently to achieve basic purpose and goals
